- adh3isive, on 02/24/2008, -15/+95Bring on the Bluray drive.
- RCcola159, on 02/24/2008, -3/+70Yeah, after all the other 100 nails.
- Dynamo418, on 02/24/2008, -10/+71I for one am glad. Hopefully HD-DVD's will be slashed in price, so if anything my HD-DVD player was a good purchase! Right...right guys? Oh god i'm a fool..
- scairborn, on 02/24/2008, -30/+81So Microsoft, when can I pick up my blu-ray drive so I don't have to buy a PS3?
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -1/+46Never forget!
- NyteStarNyne, on 02/24/2008, -9/+49For all you early adopters, here's what you can do with your new found doorstop:
http://editorials.teamxbox.com/xbox/2166/Ways-to-E ... - hollywoodphony, on 02/24/2008, -1/+41Well that's fine, but what about my Sega 32x?
- emeralddragon, on 02/24/2008, -4/+41but they bought them knowing full well they could become paperweights. Caveat Emptor
- NightVortez, on 02/24/2008, -16/+52Blu-Ray has been outselling HD-DVD movies 2/1 before Warner Bros even switched, hell in December standalone Blu-Ray players (400+) outsold the standalone HD-DVD players ($100+). Even if Sony did pay them off, which still seems like a huge conspiracy theory to me, Blu-Ray's victory was imminent.
- Ajajadude, on 02/24/2008, -1/+35And the cremation?
- Mrdudeperson, on 02/24/2008, -3/+33Beta max also has had a few setbacks, but im confident it will prevail!
- SemiSarcastic, on 02/24/2008, -6/+36Micheal Bay called it.
- Rijnzael, on 02/24/2008, -3/+30No, he was expressing the obviousness of the article.
- WhereAmI, on 02/24/2008, -1/+27And Sony doesn't control the Blu-Ray drive no matter how much idiots like to tell you.
- diggerman32, on 02/24/2008, -4/+29I saw some HD-DVDs yesterday that where cheaper than regular dvds O.o
- Dgen_X, on 02/24/2008, -2/+25You can pick up an internal PC blu-ray drive for under $200, right now.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
And that's a Sony branded drive, which is the same item/price on Newegg as the retail store I work in, wacky.
edit:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
$129...oem - emeralddragon, on 02/24/2008, -8/+31So? Microsoft could have given then 10 times more than that if they wanted to. Warner Bros wasn't the only nail in that coffin. Microsoft should have shipped every 360 with a HD-DVD player. They didn't and lost.
- SemiSarcastic, on 02/24/2008, -0/+21Christ, the last thing we need is more of these pictures in the comments.
- rolfeman02, on 02/24/2008, -2/+23Alright seriously...I can find this on almost every submission now
- spiralspirit, on 02/24/2008, -4/+21I wonder why it's even an issue that they were paid off? Does it matter? Corporations are not politicians - they are not being "bribed" because they exist to take money. In this case the money they took was from Sony. What does being paid to drop go with blu-ray change any part of this?
- Varz, on 02/24/2008, -30/+46As expected.
Some interesting details are coming out after the format war but:
http://slashdot.org/articles/08/02/23/139228.shtml - About Toshiba possibly being paid off to drop HD-DVD
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/02/22/193920 ... - About Warner Bros being paid up to $400 000 000 to go with Blu-Ray - theaceoffire, on 02/24/2008, -13/+29Yeah, I mean outselling HD-DVD in all markets and only having one hardware manufacturer had nothing to do with it.
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -5/+20Modding down? WTF?
- knobidy, on 02/24/2008, -0/+15Why not? Money is money.
- Varz, on 02/24/2008, -1/+14Microsoft said before that they didn't want to ship with either format because they didn't know who would win, they were being cautious. I think the main reason they backed HD-DVD was simply because it was a competitor to Blu-Ray. Imagine what would have happened to the PS3 if Blu-Ray lost the war, they wouldn't be getting the sales they are now thats for sure. Either way it doesn't matter too much to MS who won because they can just release another add-on player.
- Microdot, on 02/24/2008, -2/+15if its any consolation.... sony hates you more.
- cyberdork, on 02/24/2008, -3/+16I wouldn't call early adaptor 'victims'. They were very aware of a format war going on and that there was a 50/50 chance of picking the wrong format. It's their own fault.
- Appleologist, on 02/24/2008, -2/+15YAPLY?
- hexydes, on 02/24/2008, -5/+18I think it's funny that so many of you equate HD-DVD ending to Microsoft "losing".
Microsoft got exactly what it wanted, and I think it's hilarious that they did so under the guise of "losing". - Rijnzael, on 02/24/2008, -0/+12And I'm sure that if you ran a corporation, you'd continue supporting something the original manufacturer doesn't support anymore...
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -2/+14Don't forget the funeral and burial.
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -2/+14It's still good, it's still good!
- Microdot, on 02/24/2008, -7/+19i wouldnt really call it 50/50. most of us knew a LONG time ago which format was going to win... it was just a matter of 1) paying attention, 2) dropping the fanboy *****.
- shaka999, on 02/24/2008, -1/+13So somehow MS are being dicks if they don't cover the cost of your mistake?
- ECas123, on 02/24/2008, -1/+12All YOUR mom told me was not to stop...
- ElJefeGrande, on 02/24/2008, -4/+15Anybody have a link to the official press release?
- Bootes, on 02/24/2008, -1/+12It never looked like either could make it, unless you only hang around Digg and various similar sites.
- harrypl0tter, on 02/24/2008, -6/+17Why? They can still watch any movie that comes out. They just can't use certain features like PIP (who the ***** wants a little picture in the corner of the director saying stupid ***** while you are watching the movie?), and bd live(why? Are you seriously going to buy ***** after you finish watching a movie?).
- WhereAmI, on 02/24/2008, -2/+13Blu-Ray had higher studio support. And yes the consumer showed the way, Blu Ray has been outselling HD DVD on multiplatform titles for awhile now. Just because you and all your anti Sony friends think Blu ray sucks doesn't mean you are a ***** consumer spokesman.
See this site for the proof that the consumer chose Blu Ray over HD DVD
http://charts.highdefdigest.com/
Tired of you ***** idiots *****. HD DVD was inferior in so many ways, you're an idiot. - a1532b, on 02/24/2008, -3/+14Really? That's the first thing that comes to mind?
- Pritchard, on 02/24/2008, -2/+13i no rite?????
- Ne007, on 02/24/2008, -3/+13Oh yeh? Well I downloaded my HD movies straight to my computer for free.
HAHAHAHA! There's absolutely no reason to have either player LOL! NOOB! - chrismartens26, on 02/24/2008, -2/+12$400,000,000 ≠ $4,000,000,000
- theaceoffire, on 02/24/2008, -8/+18Blu-Ray parts have dropped drastically in cost and size and speed of production.
But a PS3 would probably be more future resistant. -
