Microsoft already abandoned one console before its time was up so that they could get the jump on Sony for this gen. Once was forgivable but if they do it again it is going to engender a lot of ill will. The thing about console gaming is that each generation has had a fairly significant lifespan - look at PS2, eight years in and it is still selling well (1.3mil December, US). It takes a long time for mass market consumers to get caught up and they don't want a system to become obsolete as soon as they buy it. Rapid hardware turnover is why the PC gaming market is relatively small in comparison, appealing mostly to tech junkies and hardcore gamers, If MS starts bringing out a new console every three years, it is going to fatigue the market. These systems need shelf-life if mass market console gaming is going to continue to grow in the mainstream.
