Gears of War 2 to get linked achievements

xboxfocus.com — Stepping into any series halfway through can make for a confusing and disappointing experience. But Gears of War 2 is introducing a way to connect Gears and Gears 2; through "linked achievements".

This is worse than locking content on the disk and selling it as DLC. $60 for Gears 1 >>>> whatever DLC for locked content costs. When Gears 2 is released there should be no reason to play Gears 1.

      It is removing features from one game and only allowing you to get them if you buy another one of their games.
      Why stop at this, lets remove characters from the upcoming Street Fighter 4 and let you unlock them only if you buy the older Street Fighters, or how about taking away guns in Metal Gear Solid 4 and forcing you to go back and play MGS1 to get them, or lets get rid of a few cars in GTA4 and making it so you need all the other GTAs to get them.
      This a blatant money grab and by adding the word "achievement" and "gears of war" gets people cheering for what they should be booing about.
      • fanclerks, on 07/27/2008, -0/+8There was nothing in that article that said you wouldn't be able to unlock those special items in other ways. This sounds like just a "Thanks" from the developers for having also played the other game. Need For Speed Underground 2 had the same sorta thing where you'd get an upgraded car to start with if it detected a save game for NFS Underground 1. More than likely it'll just unlock some stuff easier if it sees that you've already put some time into the series.

        If you really have an issue with it, go rent it for a few days and you can get the benefits. It'll just check for the save games or achievements I'm sure.

        Listen broski the content that they unlocking with this, is stuff that doesn't affect the main story at all. It's just bonus content for people who own the first one. Like the 3 they talked about is just more skins for multiplayer.

        I'm glad they are doing this, it will make me finish more of my games. And sorry for Wall of Text.

I bought it to have fun, not to spend hours earning additional weapons so the playing field can remain level, as almost all the new weapons are more powerful than the standard issue ones. I also generally find winning fun, and playing to unlock achievements is often contrary to playing to win (hey heavy, when I uber you, instead of clearing out that sentry so we can make a move for the point, just run around punching people instead so I can move 1/12th of the way towards getting a better weapon). Not to mention that for at least a week or two after achievements are released the game is essentially unplayable (unless you like to play on a team of 12 with 10 of those players going medic, and playing like morons as they want new toys).

        Not rly. Like if you pay for a book your not going to skip chapters. Then why would skip parts of the game. They are giving you more content for just finishing the first game.

        The only part that could be a pain would be unlocking stuff by finding X-amount achievements. But most games that would do something like is. They won't be for just the casual gamers.

    Bit of a catch 22 I see going on with these comments, if your an achievement whore you'll want to play GoW1 anyway, and if your not an achievement whore, you won't care... playing GoW1 won't unlock any STORYLINE in GoW2, just some achievements.
