- dnmacf, on 06/03/2009, -3/+46In my opinion Natal's success is down to the developers now.
- artissco, on 06/03/2009, -6/+37People don't realize that this technology is not just for gaming, You could integrate this for daily functions... I would love this for web browsing
- tault, on 06/03/2009, -5/+324 ways this can be awesome
1) Playing a FPS where they have a custom gun you use. Then you can reload it ect ect. It would be something like the arcades but with more fun to it. First of all you actually have to dodge bullets. Not the simple if it hits the screen you get hit. You actually can duck behind objects and more. If this is done right it could be awesome.
2) A true sword game. Wii made me want to play a sword game but the response sucked and it never seemed like i was there. Imaging playing against someone in a sword game online to which you both where jedis and had the fun of dodging, blocking, and so on to your online opponent (if lucas gets a jedi game for this then WOW!)
3) Sports games. Playing baseball, tennis, racing, and lets not forgot flying games.
4) A fighting game like street fighter where you actually use your moves on screen to attack.
I think all 3 of those can be fun, but the second one could be something every guy has wanted to do since they first had the nerf swords. Be an awesome sword fighter. - ArcadeJunkies, on 06/03/2009, -3/+28Because the EyeToy only sees a few major points and in 2D.
Natal on the other hand sees every minute detail in 3D space.
That is a big difference, but obviously inspired by EyeToy.
Here is an article with more info comparing them: http://arcade-junkies.com/2009/06/e3-09-microsofts ... - prateeko, on 06/03/2009, -6/+31The technology is really impressive. Their demos were meh, but I look forward to seeing what can be done, especially when this is used in conjunction with the current 360 controller/physical objects (driving without anything in your hands would be too weird, but having the controller there providing force feedback? awesome).
- Sornos, on 06/03/2009, -0/+19I'd love to see some Minority Report style interfaces. If developed properly, a mouse would not be needed.
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -1/+16No.
Natal works with the current control scheme in any games. Want to add looking around corner to a FPS that doesn't have it? Use Natal and do it naturally. Want to add a foot pedal to a racing game? Done! Want to release a Rock Band that people without the special controllers can enjoy? Done!
If you check the article, they have hacked Burnout to do exactly that, they didn't need to recode the whole game with those controls in mind.
I don't think that the initial interest in Natal will be a full replacement of the controllers, but more of a complement to it. And as such, it will push millions of units. - se7envii, on 06/03/2009, -0/+15It'd be sweet with this Natal device to have an option that will automatically create an avatar for you based on your actual physical appearance.
- Squirgle, on 06/03/2009, -0/+11You don't shoot in an RTS, you order units to do various things.
Think EndWar, but better, because it has voice recognition rather than phrase recognition. - inactive, on 06/03/2009, -1/+12A console RTS that is playable? Hell would freeze over
- thelastcivilian, on 06/03/2009, -4/+15So... when it comes to games like Street Fighter...
- whateverHeSaid, on 06/03/2009, -2/+12Yeah, gotta love those force feedback dinner plates. Moron.
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -2/+12Natal can do everything the Sony controller could, but I don't think that the opposite is true. Sony will just play "catch the leader" and fail like they did with the sixaxis.
Plus, that the Sony setup need a wii like "wand" will play against it *big* time. - hoju7887, on 06/03/2009, -5/+15Imagine playing an RTS using this. Moving through the map, selecting units, voice commands for actions, manipulating the viewing angle in 3D...
- TBobes, on 06/03/2009, -3/+13@Gutterpunk
All your ideas were good except the first one. If you turn your head to simulate looking around the corner, how are you supposed to even see what is around that corner since once you turn your head you are looking away from the tv? - JoeHague, on 06/03/2009, -0/+9It be even sweeter if you import yourself into first and third person shooters- Instead of unlocking camo- you could just wear it
- suntzusputnik, on 06/03/2009, -1/+10mark my words, this type of tech will be implemented into consumer computers and become a standard as part of the ui. in other words, the ui is no longer only gui
- waver01, on 06/03/2009, -0/+8No you're not a fanboy, just do your research next time ;)
- Mr_Lyle, on 06/03/2009, -1/+9You're forgetting the genre that could potentially benefit the most out of this new technology. Adventure games and cop/private investigator games.
After seeing the interaction with Milo, the possibilities in those kinds of games are endless. Looking for clues at a crime scene or sketching a picture of a suspect that got away, and passing them off to other charachters for analysis. Interrogating suspects, asking the right questions and looking at their facial expressions to try and tell if they're lying, trying to trick and outsmart suspects with the right words. Even the occasional fight while trying to arrest a suspect.
That's the kind of application I'm mostly looking forward too. I just hope a good developer can find a way to create something like that and pull it off well. - inactive, on 06/04/2009, -0/+7If you are using a pad you are doing it wrong.
- zombiecarlin, on 06/03/2009, -0/+6Only if there's a cheat mode that takes a few inches off my beer belly.
- Squirgle, on 06/03/2009, -0/+5@TBobes
I think he meant more along the lines of leaning around a corner rather than fully looking 90 degrees left or right. Think along the lines of the Wiimote head tracking that some particularly brainy chaps have been working on. - uknowwhoibe, on 06/03/2009, -0/+5Mice have served their purpose, imo. It's time for the next way to control our computer-experiences.
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -2/+7Even if it's just a force-feedback replica of Indiana Jones's ***** so you too can be Spielberg for a day?
- beesaretasty, on 06/03/2009, -0/+5How about fist to open hand? Seems better than sending a controller hurtling towards the screen because you accidentally let go of it when you were releasing the ball...
They are showcasing the system. Of course they aren't going to use additional controllers while doing it so that you will focus on what they want you to focus on. Do you really not think they will come up with other peripherals if they make the experience better for certain games? - Nosyn, on 06/03/2009, -2/+6"it makes no sense for your brain..." lol totally agree.
- suntzusputnik, on 06/03/2009, -0/+4crouch, lean forward, punch
- Sornos, on 06/03/2009, -0/+4If you check out some of the 3dv Zcam demos (which Natal is based off) you can see games other than Burnout being retrofitted. Microsoft Flight Simulator for one. Halo CE is another I saw.
- vondrak, on 06/04/2009, -0/+4Finally all the time I spent mastering the hurricane kick will bear fruit.
- SoulGrub, on 06/04/2009, -0/+4You'd definitely need some buttons to push at some points and I doubt it is accurate enough to track your finger movements. They can easily solve this with various wireless devices in combination with natal.
- CoD4, on 06/03/2009, -0/+3a hot dinner plate would give enough feedback
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -1/+4It's a given that it will. Maybe not a "killer" one, but a good starter set, like the Wii.
- blankoboy, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3And then they could charge users to make them appear slimmer and better looking. Profit!
The Xbox Natal Handsome Pack! - superkendall, on 06/03/2009, -1/+4Looking at the E3 demo video, it looks like the motions are a bit rough still - like that painting thing. Sure it may be able to capture 3D movement but I'm not sure it's more precise for gaming than either the Nintendo or Sony solution, and it's hard to replace a handfull of buttons for controls... like an article I read said, in a bowling game how would you choose release the ball? Wave your other hand? Yell "Bada Bing Baby? I'm sure they'll figure it out but it does limit you dropping all controls even though it's easier on the people.
- Redge, on 06/03/2009, -0/+3"Hands on"... what? There's no controller! Hehehe!
- woofers07, on 06/03/2009, -1/+4Serious question,
Using some sort of gyroscope, would it be possible to provide effective force feedback in a wireless controller? - SirVenro, on 06/03/2009, -0/+3Kotaku had a hands on thing where they were able to play Burnout Paradise with the Natal. No video though.
http://kotaku.com/5276789/from-stick-figure-to-min ... - mywhitenoise, on 06/03/2009, -1/+4Every time someone mentions a motion controlled sword game, I imagine that fat Star Wars kid.
- orca94, on 06/03/2009, -0/+3In addition to ArcadeJunkies post, EyeToy isn't the first time camera based games were done either. Back in the day lots of web cams came with them.
- merdiesel, on 06/04/2009, -1/+4There is nothing worse than a guy who wears his sun glasses inside.
- thirdeyeopen, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3Thanks for not pointing the camera at the game they were playing even once. Wtf.
- ronintetsuro, on 06/03/2009, -0/+2You've never personally used an Eyetoy, have you?
- smspence, on 06/03/2009, -2/+4From the article: "Kudo insinuated that it would be easy for developers to incorporate this tech into pre-existing games..."
Maybe I'm reading too far into this, but does this mean we could see developers release downloadable patches through Xbox Live that will allow games that are already on the market to utilize Project Natal controls? - AmazingSteve, on 06/04/2009, -1/+3Umm that'd be the PS fanboys. Why the ***** do you think the Wii60 console combo is so prevalent?
- blankoboy, on 06/04/2009, -0/+2We already have the webcams. It is simply a matter of the software. Frankly both Windows and OSX should have native support for this type of gesture interface.
- whatever2011, on 06/03/2009, -0/+2I think this would work really well with a Spiderman game with all the hand to hand combat and the web shooting.
- JoeHague, on 06/03/2009, -1/+3You know how you can import your face to Rainbow Six:Vegas- It would be hella cool if you could import your entire body into an FPS/
- zombiecarlin, on 06/03/2009, -0/+2You drive a Minivan don't you?
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -0/+2Make it an interactive Tachikoma and we're in business. How cool would it be to have a Tachikoma help you with your homework? Or search/browse the web with? or who know what else.
Tell these developers to watch shows like GITS and Cowboy Bebop, that should give them plenty of ideas as to the potential of this project. - waver01, on 06/03/2009, -0/+2well FTA
