kotaku.com — The Xbox 360 won 2007. The console might not have sold the most units or captured the attention of the mass media, but as a platform, it's provided the most complete experience of the year while executing titles with the most successful track record.

- raisinbrainMMM, on 12/31/2007, -160/+36Sadly this great performance doesn't help as much as it could to boost the 360's reputation versus its competitors. The majority of the people who own a 360 have had to send it in for repairs.
- username9000, on 12/31/2007, -37/+98false.
- username9000, on 12/31/2007, -17/+35I see Sony fanboys are digging down facts again. There is no possible way that the "majority" of 360's need to be repaired. Silly Sony fanboy exaggeration as usual. RROD is a problem that has been addressed in several ways, and obviously people in the US still prefer the 360 over the PS3 (when looking at sales figures), yet it is an easy target for those who can't think of any other negatives when it comes to the console. So digg me down again Sony people. The more you worry about spreading FUD on the 360 the more people buy it for the games.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/31/2007, -37/+12No, the majority of 360's do need to be repaired. Think about it, aftre a year it was reported 33% of them are faulty. This wasn't just a few ***** up shipments, it was a flaw in design of hardware...which they seem to be correcting at the moment. If after a year its at 33% you dont think that number will jump by the second year? If you bought a 360 before summer of 2007, it's pretty safe to say that it WILL break.
- logicalnoise, on 12/31/2007, -11/+2333% was never confirmed or correlated by any actual evidence it was a number some asshat at gamestop pulled out of his namesake. With that said many older units will need repairs eventually. My launch unit just succubed to the RROD this past weekend. However MS quickly processed my RMA and I shipped my 360 out today. My only regret is that I will be without my unit for more than a week when I have so much great gaming left on many titles as well as on rock band.
- NSMike, on 12/31/2007, -2/+15Math, people. 33% is not the majority, even if that number were correct.
- Tilon, on 12/31/2007, -10/+6Logic, tards. If 33% of a product fails it's a systemic design flaw that could damn well manifest in the rest of the same design.
- Ajajadude, on 01/01/2008, -2/+6By industry standards, 33% failure is massive. Even if it were lower, it's still too high.
And, yes, even Microsoft has admitted their was "issues" with the hardware. When a company is willing to drop all that money down the toilet to lengthen a warranty for a hardware problem, there's a design flaw.
- Microdot, on 01/01/2008, -5/+4i dont know if the majority part is true or not... they wont give realistic specs, so its all just speculation. i know the only person i give a rats ass about, myself, had it fail 4 times in 2007 (and once in 06). i gave up. i chose not to put up with their ***** anymore. i actually spent more time sitting and waiting on shipping, than actually playing the damn thing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_pr ...
On July 9, 2007, CRN Australia (Haymarket Group) published an article claiming that Microsoft admitted a design flaw in Xbox 360 which could cause a failure of all Xbox 360 consoles produced so far. Microsoft claims that the manufacturing problems have been fixed, although they did not elaborate as to what the problems were. Microsoft executives discussed some of the manufacturing problems with their shareholders in their July 5, 2007 conference call.- Nickbc87, on 01/01/2008, -7/+4Yeah, they might all fail EVENTUALLY, so will every other electronics device ever made. Most people (I say most, not all) will not even end up owning one for more than 10 years. It isn't exactly a collectors item, like a NES or SNES.
- Microdot, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3id like to say you are right, but you arent. my nes still works great. so does my sega master system and genesis. maybe in the next 10 years, they will all fail, but given the rate of failure in the 360, you dont have a fraction of that kind of time.
- Nickbc87, on 01/01/2008, -7/+4Yeah, they might all fail EVENTUALLY, so will every other electronics device ever made. Most people (I say most, not all) will not even end up owning one for more than 10 years. It isn't exactly a collectors item, like a NES or SNES.

- mark_in_bc, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2I don't think you can read, the quote reads "...which COULD cause a failure of all Xbox 360 consoles produced so far". Could means that some might fail and others might not. How can you read that and then say that EVERY Xbox made is going to fail?
- buryyourhead, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1black bear.

- richmomz, on 12/31/2007, -20/+60I've owned my 360 for a year and a half and never had any problems. I also know a dozen other 360 owners and none of them have ever needed repairs. Talk about 360 tech problems are vastly overblown.
- Christbait, on 12/31/2007, -7/+25Right... the whole thing is just amplified. I've also had my 360 for over a year problem free, same for many of my friends with the exception of one, who did get the RROD just before Xmas. This very same sentence can easily be dittoed by many other 360 users.
- silverwolfe, on 12/31/2007, -3/+12Of course, then there are the horror stories. My co-worker's 360 crapped out a week before Halo 3 came out so he sent it in to be repaired. He gets it back and then it dies AGAIN as soon as he puts in the Halo 3 disc. Fun times for him, let me tell you.
- Tilon, on 12/31/2007, -4/+12And I work returns and I see 100x the 360s come back than I do PS3s or Wiis.
I have never. Ever. Returned a Wii.
360s? several a week. - jostheller, on 01/01/2008, -4/+3I just received a 360 for Christmas. I am not too worried about RROD anymore since it seems that the Falcon CPU has taken care of those issues. I was however floored by the incredible amount of sound/(noise pollution) that the 360 produces. It is easily 3 times louder then the PS3 if not more. I haven't done any measurements but based on my experience of building near silent PC, I would estimate that the PS3 puts out about 24 dB at a max, where I would estimate the 360 puts out close to 60 dB. Again these are not measured values, just my views on the system I received for Christmas.
- senatorpjt, on 01/01/2008, -1/+3Yeah, yours is just going to break right after the warranty expires.
- FoxOrian, on 12/31/2007, -6/+36Source your facts. raisinbrain. Give us a concrete study that shows at least 51% of all Xbox owners have had to send it out.
- ferrariman60, on 12/31/2007, -9/+20"The majority"- yeah right! You're a dumbass. That means that over 50% of xbox 360 owners have had to have theirs repaired- I know 5 people who own 360's, and none have had any issue, including mine. Statistically speaking, if what you say is true, 4 of us would have needed a repair. You're quite wrong.
- bbear, on 01/01/2008, -2/+13 out of 5 is a majority too. Although the number of xbox 360s needing repair is closer to 30% with 100% of units made before a certain date being vulnerable.
- chrisOrbit, on 12/31/2007, -28/+11I had a 360 for 30 min before i got the red ring of death.
- fli7e, on 12/31/2007, -3/+10That's unfortunate, but it does make you the minority. Had 51% or more of people had this issue, Microsoft would have issued a recall on the system, not simply extended the warranty.
- senatorpjt, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1No they wouldn't. In that case, they'd have to replace 100% of the systems, not 51%. Also, if this is an ongoing risk of failure, not all of those 51% will fail in the warranty period.
- Jorge777, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1I haven't really faced any hardware problems since the days of the NES. The only problems I've had were with peripherals, specifically the guitar controllers for Rockband and the new wireless GH3 guitar. (Using an Xplorer while I wait for the strat back)
And to comment on the article, I've loved the 360 but I've hate what it's done to my wallet and that it could be even worse. I've held back and not bought .skate, COD4, Crackdown and All Pro Football 2k8 because there's only so much money I can justifying throwing into gaming before it becomes a problem
- fli7e, on 12/31/2007, -3/+10That's unfortunate, but it does make you the minority. Had 51% or more of people had this issue, Microsoft would have issued a recall on the system, not simply extended the warranty.
- theuncommonman, on 12/31/2007, -7/+5While it's true the 360 hardware has its problems, I'll gladly take the risk of my system breaking down on me in order to play the wealth of great titles on 360 right now. It's unfortunate that the hardware is somewhat unreliable, but Microsoft has admitted their mistakes and is working to correct it, unlike some consoles companies have in the past (PS2, I'm looking at you). Aside from fixing my system and shipping it free (as they should), they offered me a free month of Xbox Live and a free game as well. Every system has it's advantages and disadvantages, but if I had to pick one, I'd rather have the system with more highly rated games, the best (or some of the best) graphics, the greatest variety in titles, and the most complete online service, as opposed to a system with more reliable hardware, but lacking these other qualities.
- smergs, on 12/31/2007, -2/+2I've had my 360 since 3 months after launch. I haven't had a problem yet. (Knocks on wood)
- khellendros1984, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2I've known a significant number of people with bad consoles (myself being one), but I don't really think it was over half...maybe 1/4 to 1/3 (and that's only the ones of rather early manufacture)
- dlcarter, on 12/31/2007, -1/+3Don't get me wrong, I love my 360. But I've had to send it in.. and this may just be incredibly bad luck, but everyone I know who has one (granted it's only a handful of people) all had to send it in as well. I was happy with Microsoft's response, though.
- DNABeast, on 01/01/2008, -2/+730% is not a majority.
It is however, still not the sort of numbers that you want to be looking at. - elcaminos, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1I've got one of the RRoD prone consoles, and I can't wait for it to crap out on me so I can head down to best buy and pick up an elite or halo 3 edition console. A few weeks later, I'll get my warranty refund in the mail.
- bbear, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1I got the red ring of death and had to send mine in for repair this year. The entire process took about a month. I bought a new 360 with the Falcon chip and sold the RRoD prone console when it returned.
- username9000, on 12/31/2007, -37/+98false.
- Tahiri, on 12/31/2007, -30/+47Agreed. (With Kotaku, not raisinbrain)
- MxM111, on 12/31/2007, -34/+31Disagreed!
It is very subjective to say that it has win because it has "The Most Games You Want To Play ". May be him and may be me, but not me. XBox360 not even ONE game interests me. All the games that could have been at some interest I can play, and prefer to play on PC.
The OBJECTIVE metric for console are SALE NUMBERS. And Wii owns here. Interestingly, there are quite a few games that I DO want to play on Wii, that I can not play on PC, or even if I could, for some of those games I still would prefer Wii because of control.- Cl1mh4224rd, on 12/31/2007, -5/+41> "The OBJECTIVE metric for console are SALE NUMBERS. And Wii owns here."
Err... but what about *games* for the Wii? How many of those millions merely bought the system just to play Wii Sports every once in a while? That's hardly a "complete experience", which is what Kotaku is basing their conclusion on...- MxM111, on 01/01/2008, -6/+1If the question was which console had more games, then the answer would be different. Plus again, which games are good is quite subjective. I do not want to play ANY game on XBox and I do want to play some games on Wii. But I do not claim that Wii is the winner because of that. Wii is the winner because of the SALES, which translates that more people liked Wii console overall more than XBox360 (that includes price of cause). It is that simple!
- expert01, on 01/01/2008, -6/+1Shouldn't everyone know by now not to reply to comments on their comments?
- poxonyou, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4"Wii is the winner because of the SALES, which translates that more people liked Wii console overall more than XBox360 (that includes price of cause). It is that simple!"
No, it's not. One console is significantly cheaper and faddish than the other. It wasn't as if the Wii started off with slow sales, people spread the word, "The Wii is so amazing, you must buy one!" then it started selling. It started off insanely popular, and the low supply continued to fuel the frenzy all year. I have a Wii and would gladly switch game libraries with the 360, which has far more games and original games on Live Arcade. I hate FPS, which are the biggest games on the 360, but it also has many more. - Cl1mh4224rd, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4> "Wii is the winner because of the SALES, which translates that more people liked Wii console overall more than XBox360 (that includes price of cause). Yeesh! Here, in big letters:
IT'S NOT ABOUT THE FRIGGIN' HARDWARE.
You're trying to compare your apples to the author's oranges, stating that you have more apples and, therefore, apples are better than oranges. Who the hell does that?!
I don't care if Nintendo sells a billion Wii systems. If the Wii has 2 games *you* want to play, while the XBOX 360 has 20 games that appeal to a wider variety of gamers, the XBOX 360 "wins". Period.
(I would also note that I do not own an XBOX 360, but I do own a Wii. Go figure...)
- staticneuron, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2"Err... but what about *games* for the Wii? How many of those millions merely bought the system just to play Wii Sports every once in a while? That's hardly a "complete experience", which is what Kotaku is basing their conclusion on..."
But your lost. If you see the 360 as having the best library then how can you really relate to a wii owner who is actually enjoying his system? Trust me, I consider the 360's lineup superior yet I talk to people all the time who spout off titles like second opinion and sonic and the secret rings, super paper mario and other such titles as the greatest thing on earth yet those games hardly kept my attention.
The point is if the 360's library is your thing its easy to call the 360 a winner because from your POV it has the most games you wan't to play. But then again that is just as valid as any wii owner or PS3 owner calling their system a succes because they love their library.
Thats why for generations we consider leading platforms by sales not games. I think the dreamcast was awesome and had one of the best line ups ever. Does that make it a winner?
- MxM111, on 01/01/2008, -6/+1If the question was which console had more games, then the answer would be different. Plus again, which games are good is quite subjective. The loudest most opinionated people on the web used to be PC owners.... now ther Xbox 360 owners. Why am I not surprised? Library.
The 360 library appeals mainly to american and PC gamers. I prefer other genre's. The truth is that if it is a shooter on the 360, whether it be fps or tps then it is decent. Most other games are mediocre at best. Of course this is all based on opinion but I think I am not alone and the talk about games and library will be an interesting subject to watch in 2008.

- HolyCrapYo, on 12/31/2007, -61/+20Though it "won" 2007, it is Microsoft who is losing dearly in that games division.
- username9000, on 12/31/2007, -23/+11again, false. bungie won't be making PS3 games, ever. MS still has RARE and with exclusives being published by them like Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2, Alan Wake and others they are doing just fine. I would like to see Links brought back. It was SOOOOOOOOO much better than Tiger Woods ever could hope to be.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/31/2007, -21/+10haha, Bungie? You can keep that crap to yourself.
- username9000, on 12/31/2007, -5/+4Yeah, calling Bungie a bad development studio makes alot of sense. I mean Halo 3 really didn't sell that well did it?
- JayD16, on 01/01/2008, -2/+10Selling and being good are totally different. Look at Mario Party 8...
- mywhitenoise, on 01/01/2008, -4/+8Britney Spears, Puddle Of Mudd, Creed, most Wii games.
- Zettabyte, on 01/01/2008, -2/+2And Pony Horse Adventures, I think that game sold a crap ton.
- Solis, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1I love the 360, but Bungie and the Halo series has got to be one of the most over hyped studios/games in the history of the industry. You couldn't pay me to play Halo.

- santasing, on 12/31/2007, -10/+28MS has already lost billions on its gaming division. The only profitable month in its 7 year history was when halo 3 released. MS has more billions to throw at this, but I doubt a lot of the stock holders are happy.
- WhereAmI, on 12/31/2007, -5/+15He's right people, and so his HolyCrapYo. Microsoft will do whatever it takes to get inside your living room. Including spending Billions of dollars.

- theuncommonman, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1did you really just allude to a game being "gay"? retard...
- ferrariman60, on 12/31/2007, -12/+3So is sony and nintendo. No one has made a profit on a console, except I've heard perhaps the Wii and the 360 more recently. But sony is losing something like $350-400 on every single PS3 they sell. THAT is harsh. You need to understand that the thing that makes a game division profitable is not the hardware (never a high margin business, anywhere, in the electronics/computer world), but the software. The licenses are what make the moolah.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 12/31/2007, -0/+12Nintendo does make profits of their console. But there is a huge difference in business models there. Microsoft and Sony are general technology developers while Nintendo is strictly video games. Microsoft and Sony are looking to expand their market and brand name and become a more competative brand to younger people. This turns into profits in other departments. Microsoft is mainly trying to keep Sony from developing a media center capable of competing with the PC. They are protecting their thrown. Sony is trying to expand their market into the PC and gaming world. Both are worth the loss of profits to them. Nintendo on the other hand requires those profits. So they will make cheaper systems in order to make a profit. It doesn't say anything good or bad about any of the companies because it's two completely different types of businesses.
- theuncommonman, on 12/31/2007, -1/+0very intelligent, unbiased way to put it right there. besides, I'm sure Microsoft and Sony are making plenty of profits in their other divisions

Earlier this year when I got the dreaded three red lights, and wanted to kill everyone at Microsoft support for being retarded didn't help much. But the number of awesome games that have come our t for it this yea makes up for it all.
I still cringe every time I power it up though.

- Paroparo, on 12/31/2007, -29/+9The 360 probably had the worst first year of the lot, but its second year was way better than the first year of the other two. The Wii probably wins in exclusives (especially if you don't count PC+360 as exclusive), but the sheer amount of multiplats puts MS in the lead, with the PS3 far behind the competition.
It will be very interesting to see how 2008 plays out with the PS3's first true heavy hitters, the Wii's third party support that we've heard so much about, and the 360's third year games arriving.- krd1979, on 12/31/2007, -4/+2I'm not sure why you're being dug down, I thought that was a rather insightful comment. Saying it was that worst year might be a little harsh, but I'd say 360 and PS3 are duking it out fairly evenly and will go back and forth throughout this generation, but the Wii clearly wins over all.
- senatorpjt, on 01/01/2008, -2/+2The 360 should have had the best first year hands down, because it was the only one on the market. Let's see how year 2 of the PS3 and Wii are before calling the 360 the winner of anything.
- Paroparo, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1Everything on the internet is read in the most negative light possible, and I suppose my comment can be read as negative towards all consoles, so the fans of all three consoles are digging me down. =P
Seriously though, if anyone has good reasons why I'm totally wrong, I'd love to hear them.
(and by worst first year I mean the 360 in 2006 having inferior games to either the PS3 or Wii in 2007, but the 360 in 2007 probably beating the other two in 2007)
- jimbojim, on 12/31/2007, -13/+69I love my 360. I know it's apparently not "cool" to like Halo 3 anymore, but I'm still playing even after getting UT3 and CoD4 for Christmas, and I'll probably still be playing it for awhile. Crackdown was another one of my favorites even without the Halo 3 beta included, and of course Bioshock and Mass Effect were great, too. Forza 2 was the best racing game I've played in awhile, too. Even Eternal Sonata was worth playing through a couple times, although the 360 still needs a great RPG game to compete with the likes of Final Fantasy.
- shinythingy, on 12/31/2007, -15/+5Was it ever cool to like Halo?
- shadowpr0ph3t, on 01/01/2008, -2/+4guess you never played it... so shut up!
- shinythingy, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Guess people with an opinion other than "0MG HALO!!!!!!!! IS THE PWNZ0R!!!!1!!!111" haven't played it?
- saisumimen, on 01/01/2008, -2/+2I played it... it's still not as good as Unreal Tournament 2004, even though they aped a lot of that game's features and got branded as "revolutionary!"
- shadowpr0ph3t, on 01/01/2008, -2/+4guess you never played it... so shut up!
- theuncommonman, on 12/31/2007, -2/+6I agree Halo 3 is great, I still play it as well (along with COD4). I think it got overshadowed a bit by the other great holiday releases, but it's still one of the best titles of 2007, and still has the best multiplayer IMO. You just can't beat all those features- forge, theater, excellent matchmaking, and they've already released new maps! And if you're looking for a great RPG to compete with Final Fantasy (which may eventually come to 360 anyway), check out Lost Odessey coming in February, it's made by the same people who made Blue Dragon and looks to be quite good
- Dignan666, on 12/31/2007, -8/+3You got UT3 for the 360 for christmas? Really?
- krd1979, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5I think he meant to say on the PC...
- jimbojim, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1I got it for the PS3. I have PS3, 360, and Wii (and a 5 year old computer).

- BenjaminWill, on 12/31/2007, -36/+14It won 2007? Right. So 90% shooters makes a platform does it?
- CrimsonBlur, on 12/31/2007, -3/+2090% first person shooters? Have you even taken a glance at the huge list of games out for the 360? Just because some high-profile FPS games came out this year does not mean that's all the 360 has. Not even 1/3 of the games are FPS, I'd say not even close. That's a far cry from 90%. Sports and racing games alone make that number impossible, not to mention XBLA games, of which none are FPS except a few old classics like Doom and Marathon.
- WhereAmI, on 01/01/2008, -3/+2Not to mention that they are also cross platform which you did not mention. Especially the sports games. Keep trying to think your 360 is better, and that nice 50$ a year goes very well in keeping that xbox live service up this week.
- CrimsonBlur, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3I find it funny how you are apparently accusing me of being a 360 fanboy and then say "keep trying to think your 360 is better", nice flame attempt. I own a 360 and I love it. I also want to get a Wii and PS3 eventually. I just love games, and I just took issue with the comment that it's all FPS games, because that's simply not true and is just a worthless flame bate comment. The fact that any game is cross-platform is irrelevant.
- WhereAmI, on 01/01/2008, -3/+2Not to mention that they are also cross platform which you did not mention. Especially the sports games. Keep trying to think your 360 is better, and that nice 50$ a year goes very well in keeping that xbox live service up this week.

- logicalnoise, on 12/31/2007, -8/+5halo 3 sold 3 million copies in it's first week. How many did UT3 sell for the PC so far?
- GonadHunter, on 12/31/2007, -3/+12Just because it is the most popular it doesn't always mean it is the best.
- logicalnoise, on 12/31/2007, -3/+8COD4 also sold way better and is easily better than UT3 in many aspects.
- staticneuron, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2Are you comparing cod4 to UT? CoD4 came out on the next gen systems and PC around the same time. The PC got UT then recently the PS3 got it and we will have to wait a few months for the 360 to get it. Comparing sales aren't even valid.
- GonadHunter, on 12/31/2007, -3/+12Just because it is the most popular it doesn't always mean it is the best.
- ferrariman60, on 12/31/2007, -1/+4Exactly. I maintain an up-to-date computer (not an affordable proposition, sadly) and have a 360. I love shooters on the PC, mouse>sticks, but the 360 has enough of its own stuff to more than validate the purchase price. My latest drugs? COD4 on PC (most addictive MP ever?), and Mass Effect on the 360, which is positively brain scrambling in its awesomeness. Forza 2 is also a good reason to have a 360.
- WhereAmI, on 01/01/2008, -2/+1The whole point of what I said is 360 sucks, they are on the PC too. I know Mass Effect is on 360 only and so is Forza 2. I haven't played Forza 2 yet and since it sells and I hear positive things from people like you I guess its good until my own opinion is formed. But as for Mass Effect, to me, its another FPS. Halo 3 = Halo 2, good job with making the exact same thing.

- insomniac8400, on 12/31/2007, -32/+18Have they heard of the Wii?
- logicalnoise, on 12/31/2007, -2/+16we sold a lot but their games didn't sell as equally. Most people were happy with wii sports and wii play.
- ferrariman60, on 12/31/2007, -3/+7They also explicitly say "The most complete experience," and let's be honest: There aren't many truly great games on the Wii, and fewer still properly use the wii controller setup. The 360 is a great thing- a media hub, a game console, and a move rental store. It's a great thing, and the wii just can't touch it in those areas. Also, the 360 has a much, MUCH more solid game library going for it. The wii is out in the cold. Fun? sure. Most complete? By no means. Sorry.
- Blackbow, on 12/31/2007, -13/+117360 by far had the best library of 2007. This is supported by software sales numbers. My Wii has collected an inch of dust over 2007 (with maybe 3 titles getting any of my time). The 360 has had a stellar year of games, and even Wii's hardware numbers can't mask that.
- kmcippant, on 12/31/2007, -15/+3If you are an 18-24 year old male, maybe. Not for the rest of us.
- Muncher, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2Neither of you count.
- NinjaBear, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2I'm a 25 year old gal who loves her 360. I played a Wii over at my friend's house, who incidentally is a guy, and there is no way I can see myself buying that system. Sure, the Wii is great to play at a party every so often but the Xbox is a complete system with Live and a far superior library of games aimed at not just kids but adults too.
- natastna2, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1Did you have sex?
- staticneuron, on 12/31/2007, -10/+7So this so called winner is arbitrarily decided by which aspect now? It used to be in terms of sales that people harped about ""winning" at the start of 2007 it was always the 360 has the most sales and talk about it being surpassed was scoffed at. Now that its sales are surpassed it is now a "winner" because of games? How convenient.
This generation has really lost focus on gaming. If it was universally accepted that the 360 had the "best" games the console would also have the best sales. it is obvious there are people who do not care about the 360's so called great library and there for opted to purchase other consoles. Fanboyism has always been in this industry but now that the industry has gotten bigger it has turned into a fevered pitch. This pathetic article is a prime example of fanboyism and how it has permeated gaming press.- theuncommonman, on 01/01/2008, -3/+1"If it was universally accepted that the 360 had the 'best' games the console would also have the best sales"
Right... so because Toyota Corollas sell more than any other car in the world, that makes them the best right? No, of course not. And if anything, Kotaku has shown to be somewhat against the 360 in the past; just look at their game of the year awards as opposed to other sites. Sure, there will always be some bias with these sort of things, but bias doesn't change the fact that 360 has a great library of titles, and probably more highly rated, AAA titles than PS3 and Wii put together. Check gamerankings.com if you don't believe me. - freehunter, on 01/01/2008, -2/+2I would say the 360 DID have the best sales, at least amongst gamers. The Wii was supported by people like my dad, or the girl who lives down the hall from me who likes to bowl and play tennis. Not to mention, most gamers who want a 360 have one, considering it's been out for two years now. When you get that far in the console's lifetime, software sales mean more.
- expert01, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1By your logic, the Atari getting flooded with games and almost killing off the game market was a good thing.
- staticneuron, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2I get dugg down and responded to by idiots. No surprise. I am not saying that it is a bad metric used to gauge a quality of a system but I am saying it is pure opinionated. Sales reflect what gamers think and what their tastes are. It explains the difference in sales between america and japan. Not to mention the fact that many of the 360 purchased in japan may not even be purchased from the japanese.
Flooding the market with games had nothing to do with my comment. I am just pointing out claims about who was winning last year was only about sales because at the time there weren't that many major hits on the 360 save for gears and dead rising. Now that they have had more hits yet been surpassed in sales the fanboys stop talking about market leader and try to push the argument about mindshare.
It is pathetic. Then again it blows away some arguements that poped up about last generation. The PS2 had the greatest amount of consoles and the best most rounded library out of all three consoles yet it was argued that it was because of market share. Now that we see the wii with the greatest market share and the 360 with a library that is considered great I wonder how that affects what arguements and hissy fits are to come.
- theuncommonman, on 01/01/2008, -3/+1"If it was universally accepted that the 360 had the 'best' games the console would also have the best sales"
- heystoopid, on 12/31/2007, -5/+1So how many games were sold to and/or pirated by PC owners then and what machine can emulate the others or the old retro game consoles too ?
- L4WL3RS34L, on 01/01/2008, -4/+3For consoles. PC has by far a better library of 2007 than 360. And you don't even have to buy them.
- shadowpr0ph3t, on 01/01/2008, -2/+3They still make PC games... but seriously PC gaming has been going downhill for some time now. Less and less games are heading it's direction with companys spending there money to make exclusives for the consoles. PC gamers lose.

- krd1979, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2Super Mario Galaxy (ftw). Yes, software matters, especially innovative, fun software. The Wii had a great year and although hardware sales gained the most attention, I've built quite a library of excellent games for the system (and none of them can be played on a PC).

- DeviantDragon, on 12/31/2007, -22/+59I'm gonna have to go with debuffplx but with explanation. While it's not technically a console, the PC this year has given us the chance to play Bioshock, Guitar Hero III, The Orange Box, and COD4 of the games mentioned. Add in the PC only titles like RTS games such as World in Conflict, other shooters like Crysis, and UTIII, an expansion to the popular World of Warcraft, the funny and episodic Sam and Max, factor in the easily accessible mods of tons of games on the market and I think the PC has offered us one of the best gaming experiences of the year. And, mouse and keyboard is better than the 360 controller for shooters anyways.
- Christbait, on 12/31/2007, -31/+3You don't get it. Just GTFO.
- logicalnoise, on 12/31/2007, -6/+24with an unbalanced fun:cost ratio if you don't already own a monster rig(Crysis = 1800 dollars right there).
- DeviantDragon, on 12/31/2007, -6/+8It's not as if you need to have the BEST gaming rig to enjoy these games at all. Graphics do not make a game.
- ArkAngel06, on 12/31/2007, -1/+11They make it the best it can be though, and who would want to play Crysis on low settings?
- F3nwick, on 12/31/2007, -4/+1who would want to play it at all, HORRIBLE game
- AlienHairball, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2It's true that you would have to pay more for a PC than a console - can't argue that, but no way do you need to fork over $1800 just to get a PC capable of playing Crysis with pretty graphics. I'm not even getting into whether or not I like Crysis, I'm just saying it's not *that* much money is all :)
- bbear, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2Ok $1300? My last PC cost $2000 to build and I was spending $400 a year in graphics card upgrades. I quit PC gaming because of the ridiculous costs, buggy games and system infiltrating DRM.
- freehunter, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2Graphics don't make the game, true, but they DO make it better, and could make it win out over a similar game. Plus, on a console, graphics mean nothing because the games run the same, hardly any slowdown no matter how hard they push it. On a PC, if your specs aren't up to snuff, you're suffering worse than console graphics with worse than console performance. You DO need a $1000-$1500 PC to make it worth buying the game.
- Muncher, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1Bollocks. I bought my rig for $1200 a year and a half ago and it plays Crysis fine.
- sh4rkb1t3, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1My $200 graphics card (8800GTS 320MB) plays Crysis at 720p on high settings with ease.
- logicalnoise, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3you forgot the 400 dollar CPU and another 150 for a decent amount of ram.
- DeviantDragon, on 12/31/2007, -6/+8It's not as if you need to have the BEST gaming rig to enjoy these games at all. Graphics do not make a game.
- FoxOrian, on 12/31/2007, -2/+18The PC most certainly had a better year in gaming, no denying that. But the point is that PC gaming is still a very different realm than console gaming. To play most of those games well, you'd have to spend a minimum of $800 on parts if you built a system yourself. Call us the "Console Tards," if you will, but console gaming is just more affordable and easier to jump into for the vast public [piracy on the PC not withstanding.]
- khellendros1984, on 12/31/2007, -5/+4But who doesn't already have a system they could just upgrade? Seriously, just about everyone has a PC sitting around anyhow. That lowers the cost significantly. I could take my computer to a much better speed with $500, which puts it in the realm of console costs.
- freehunter, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5I have a PC I could upgrade, but the parts that need upgraded to play games means I need to upgrade everything. I would need a new motherboard to support a Core 2 Duo, meaning I need to upgrade to DDR2. I need to upgrade my graphics card of course, and a new power supply to power it all. I already have a SATA hard drive, but a lot of people don't, so there is another upgrade, plus the cost of Vista for DX10 and Vista only games.
- sh4rkb1t3, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1$800 is only $400 more than the Xbox360 and PS3. But, you haven't considered that Xbox live costs $5 a month, and Xbox360 games & PS3 games cost $10 more than PC games. After a couple of years of gaming, you will have probably broke even already. And not only this, but the PC can play games at much higher resolutions with higher framerates than the Xbox360... considering that most games get upscaled even in HD mode on the Xbox360. Let me tell you, Gears of War at 1600x1200 looks amazing.
- khellendros1984, on 12/31/2007, -5/+4But who doesn't already have a system they could just upgrade? Seriously, just about everyone has a PC sitting around anyhow. - cannonstar, on 12/31/2007, -1/+7All you're really telling us is "Look, it's great on paper, why can't you just realize the fact that PC can do everything better than a console", but we're thinking of the cost, the upkeep, and all the work to play a game on PC. the consoles proves to be the better alternative in economical sense. Not many people have lots of money and time. I would say getting a console is a smart choice over the PC for the average gamer, but if you're really technical inclined and have a steady income, then go for the PC so you can stay on the cutting edge, but don't bitch when the rest of us thinks differently. Most of us don't even care on what we're missing out on the console counterpart. The main thing is, consoles provides a fun experience for less money. It's sad that the PC gaming industry has taken a backseat now cuz of the whole piracy issue, but at least the console gaming industry is keeping it alive. Digg me down if you like, but that's one gamer's opinion.
- kefler, on 01/01/2008, -1/+4I used to be a PC gamer, but then I moved out of a small appartment and into a real house. I own 3 PC's (main desktop, HTPC, and server).. but I'd much rather sit on the couch and play a game on the projector w/ a true home theater system.

- schoate09, on 12/31/2007, -10/+32Right, because we have:
MGS4 (Great game likely)
GT5 (Great, but only a certain audience)
KZII (I've said it before, and I will say it again, nothing more than a CGI trailer shown as a sequel to a ***** PS2 game)
LBP(Completely unproven and overhyped, and I've seen nothing from Sony that shows where the gameplay has any rhyme or reason).
Home(Yet again, I fail to see how this is revolutionary. I don't want this crap, I want to turn on the console, talk to my buddy, have an in game access to my messages when they respond, and get the game going.)
I see two titles, not convincing me enough that 2008 is the year of the PS3.- ferrariman60, on 12/31/2007, -3/+5I agree. It really seems like Sony is banking the existence and profitability of the PS3 on those 2 games. Will they be good? No doubt, this coming from a staunch 360 fan and Forza 2 fanatic. Will they be great enough to move consoles? Probably. Will there be enough other games to sell to these new owners to turn a profit? This remains to be seen. I think I'm missing the great games around for the PS3. Nothing yet, a year after release. At least, nothing that I can't play on my 360 or my PC too (COD 4 comes to mind, so does UT3).
- shinythingy, on 12/31/2007, -7/+2Tell me 2 games that will persuade me to buy a 360 or a wii next year and i'll agree with you
- username9000, on 12/31/2007, -4/+5Ninja Gaiden 2, Halo Wars, Fable 2, Alan Wake, and every other 3rd party game that will play better on the 360. 3rd parties make way more money on MS's platform. That will not change next year therefore the support will be better.
- schoate09, on 12/31/2007, -4/+5For 360.
Ninja Gaiden 2
Fable 2
Alan Wake
Gears 2
Halo Wars
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Wii
Mario Kart Wii

Metroid Prime 3
Zack and Wiki
Super Mario Galaxy- poxonyou, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2He said for 2008. Those are already out. I think Japanese 3rd parties are going to have to face reality soon and start seriously making some decent games for the Wii instead of treating it like the last place machine. The PS3 sales are still dismal, as it's out of most people's price range. American developers will continue to release 360 games of course.
- zapass, on 01/01/2008, -4/+1That looks very weak, I think he was asking for good titles, not the usual boring overhyped crap.
xbox360 is going to get pawned in 2008, that's gonna hurt.
- staticneuron, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2Calling out the same titles that the media has been lambasting doesn't make it the entire PS3 line up for 2008. Fans of the PS2 know whats comming don and pay more attention to title lik white night story, steambot chronicles 2, Yakuza 3, Star ocean, way of the samurai and many others. I don't remember them all but it is clear that if you aren't looking you will never know. Naming those titles just goes to show you aren't really looking. You name 4 titles as if those are the only titles that will drop for the PS3 in 2008. Man are some people in for a rude awakening in 2008.
- bmystry, on 12/31/2007, -1/+3I will say that MGS will be a good thing for the PS3
- thebusdriver, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1Your really going out on a limb there.
- F3nwick, on 12/31/2007, -11/+1agreed once the ps3 price drops some more, and they actually start making some decent games (i know there are good games for it, but only a few)

- Homest4r, on 12/31/2007, -18/+8Article isn't very well written on top of the fact the tone is clearly from a Microsoft/Xbox fanboy.
However, I will agree that the 360 arguably had the best titles of the year and is an excellent system overall, despite the hardware (red ring) problems and the rambunctious Xbox Live community.- username9000, on 12/31/2007, -5/+5I am getting tired of xbox live being singled out as full of rambunctious people. The only reason the PS3 doesn't have that association is simply because there are very few online games for one and very few people play them...therefore there are less idiots. Its a numbers game, not some problem with xbox live. if Sony ever gets their head out of their ass and actually puts some games out there worth playing online and a network that can support it then the same idiots will be playong on that service.
- Obsydian, on 12/31/2007, -1/+3he's right, you're gonna find assholes on the internet, not just localized to one system. you see sites get hacked by script kiddies once or twice a week, and lets not get into the screaming of "HAX!!!" when someone gets a 5 head shot spree in CS. It's everywhere; not only on Live.
- staticneuron, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2Username your full of it. UT3, warhawk, COD4 all of those rankings show that at any given time their are always more than half a million people playing online. And yes their are idiots everywhere but the stupidity is toned down far more on the PSN. I constantly play games on both system and the immaturity and the trash I hear on live makes me have to take a break. I am glad that live is around. Because if it is the pinnicle of online play then let all those obnoxious people flock to that system. While the more reserved gamers stay on the PSN.
- hardwickj, on 12/31/2007, -2/+3What a surprise. Someone actually writes some intelligent criticism of the article, and despite having a positive opinion of the console, the simple fact you criticized the article on valid merits and pointed out well documented hardware faults gets you multiple thumbs down from the digg community.
Yet more proof that the average digger is a ***** moron.

- jermm, on 01/01/2008, -1/+6PS3 vs 360 is a painful choice, at least for me
PS3 has blu-ray, 360 has movie rentals
PS3 is quiet, 360 is cheaper
PS3 has wifi, 360 has good online system
and that isn't even about games (which is less painful for the consumer, cross-platform games FTW)- ninjakoala, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1The good thing about the 360 is you have options. If you want wifi (adapter or bridge) you can add it. If you want HD-DVD (which so far is the slightly more mature format) you can add it. If you don't really care about those options you can just save the money.
With the 5 free HD-DVDs offer you basically get the drive for free anyway (if you are interested in the free movies on offer).

- sillyjoobs, on 12/31/2007, -22/+8Let's look at quantative measurements:
-didn't outsell the wii
-1/3 of them had to be returned, losing microsoft at least a billion dollars
-Halo 3 is trash- ferrariman60, on 12/31/2007, -5/+41/3, huh? Then 2 of my friends would have had to have their 360's fixed. Not the case! Sorry, I don't know anyone who's had a bad 360. Nice try though. Think next time.
- tnoy, on 12/31/2007, -1/+7super tip: when someone says 1 out of 3, that does not mean 1 out of 3 of the people you know.
- D3koy, on 12/31/2007, -1/+3I don't think "-Halo 3 is trash" is a quantitative measurement....though I may agree.

- samfishercell, on 12/31/2007, -10/+3So his argument is that it didn't sell the most, you can play games available elsewhere, and you can play online with foulmouthed 12 year olds and backwoods yokles who just discovered the internet [read: XBL] And the 360...WON? 0_o
All joking aside, the 360 had some great times this year, then again 2007 was a killer year for videogames to begin with. I've actually been pretty impressed with what Microsoft has done with the XBox line. I'll definitely be picking one up soon to rock Alan Wake [because Lord knows I won't go near Vista], Fable 2, and BG&E 2 (when it eventually comes out). - epj3, on 12/31/2007, -11/+5Too bad xbox live no longer works. I actually have time off from work and classes to play, and it doesn't work. I'm going back to PC gaming, so next Christmas I can actually relax and enjoy what I have purcahsed with my hard-earned cash.
- mlock2k, on 12/31/2007, -13/+16PS3 haters are in denile. clearly the ps3 was a huge disappointment and unless they buy into some game developers thats not going to change anytime soon. For me having all three next gen systems xbox360 is the one to play games on. PS3 is a great hd player and the wii is great for the kids. Nuff said.
- frieddonuts, on 12/31/2007, -1/+9XBox fanboys are all in Egypt? *denial
- dabears1218, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1Definitely have to agree. I own all 3, and while the 360 gets by far the most play time, that doesn't mean the Wii and PS3 aren't great consoles. I have a few fun games on the PS3, but more importantly I got a blu-ray player for $300 cheaper than anything at the time. And although I don't play it much alone, the Wii is absolutely perfect for parties.
- poxonyou, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1Plus, the PS3 plays the assloads of awesome PS2 games, which are still being released.
- ninjakoala, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1Not the PS3s you can buy today...

and xbox fanboys are the new brown shirts. - mark_in_bc, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2We also have all three and added a second 360 this year to keep everyone in the house happy. Wii has become a novelty since my 13 year old has decided he's outgrown it and the PS3 gets no love as the boys only play multi player games on Xbox live.
- Lukesed, on 12/31/2007, -11/+3What a complete gaming experience! UT3, sci-fi schooter! Halo 3, sci-fi shooter! Bioshock, sci-fi shooter! Mass Effect, sci-fi schooter! The Orange Box, si-fi shooter! CoD4 - now get this - modern day shooter!
Sure 360 is the best console out now but come on, lets not go crazy here. For the first time ever, I have found some new games to run WORSE on a console than they did on my computer.- zephyr42, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1why are you hating on some of the best games of 2007...

- aydoubleyou, on 12/31/2007, -6/+11Honestly... I agree. I dont own a 360, but several of my friends do, and all they do now is play CoD, Madden, TF2, etc...
I personally prefer the PC for my gaming though... it easily has the best multiplayer experience, the best graphics, and the least *****. Besides, I only play FPS games anyway now days, so I need a mouse and a keyboard.- MeatyVitamin, on 01/01/2008, -8/+2The PC didn't win...
Apple computers won because they played the only game worth playing in 2007: RON PAUL 2008!!!- Dongvid, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4???
- deadbaby, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1If Microsoft would simply allow you to use a keyboard & mouse on the 360 (as you can do on the PS3) it would be a much better platform.
- ninjakoala, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1I got a gaming rig recently. The online experience is definitely not as good as on Xbox 360. Steam is getting pretty nice though. Keyboard and mouse are way uncomfortable on a couch too btw.
- MeatyVitamin, on 01/01/2008, -8/+2The PC didn't win...
- Piglatin02, on 12/31/2007, -3/+18Crackdown! Super Fun!! Two exclamation points worth!!
- Brendan371, on 12/31/2007, -11/+5I love playing the 360, but IMHO it's not dominant. I don't think there is a clear winner. The hardware issues Microsoft let slip are too serious to overlook, gaming experience aside.
- F3nwick, on 12/31/2007, -2/+4Doesn't that just make it even clearer which console was dominant? the Wii and Ps3 both have little to no hardware issues and yet the 360 is still ahead with its horrible hardware (ive gone through three 360's myself).
- zapass, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1That's right, the market has spoken: people enjoy getting screwed, as long as it's popular.
- BurntToast, on 12/31/2007, -3/+17Wii fanboys, attack! :P

- BlueSkyfish, on 01/01/2008, -1/+5Because they want you to be in the center of the gaming experience, or something like that. Also, they didn't want to have an Xbox 2 on the shelf next to a Playstation 3 because normal people would think "Well 3 is better than 2 so..."
- Betrayer, on 01/01/2008, -3/+2that and xbox 3 60 sounds like xbox 3 so they just skipped the xbox 2 all together

A: Because when you see it, you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away.- MaTT2011, on 12/31/2007, -1/+15I'm pretty sure that doesn't make any sense.
I guess if it was called XboX180.....than yah, it would make sense.- salmonmoose, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4Maybe you walk away backwards? Although, I think the spin is a little superfluous in that case :S

- psbpv3o, on 12/31/2007, -16/+10Calling it!: ps3 will be the winner of 2008. Most of the best games coming out in 2008 are exclusive ps3 titles, everything else belongs to nintendo or is multi console (shared both by 360 and ps3). - INTERNETMASTER, on 12/31/2007, -19/+9"The Xbox 360 Won 2007"
buried for inaccuracy. Wii won 2007, xbox2 achieved second place just like xbox1 did, and they are gradually falling into third place due to the PS3. meanwhile, every one of these turds sold is a broken timebomb just waiting to RROD due to inferior microsoft trash engineering. the only thing microsoft "won" is the tilte for the worst console ever made.- F3nwick, on 12/31/2007, -6/+2Wii won nothing, its a horrible machine. If you really find swinging your arms in front of a TV an amazing experience, then your a ***** monkey. The controls are horrible, graphics look their from ***** 1997, and 99% of the games are garbage. Only game worth playing on it was Zelda, and i bought that for my gamecube. The Wii is a trend, nothing more.
- INTERNETMASTER, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2xbox2 must really suck if it can't even outsell a 1997 system where 99% of the games are garbage. that's pretty shameful.
- khellendros1984, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2The Wii has some interesting possibilities to it, notably the best FPS controls I've ever used on a console (Metroid Prime 3). As to graphics, "1997" is hyperbole. I'd say more like....2004. For the best-looking of the games. Then again, we're past the point in graphics where the graphics limit the gameplay; the only further benefit is in the immersiveness of the game, which is ruined by shoddy storytelling most of the time anyhow.
- ninjakoala, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2There's one thing that's somewhat overlooked with that argument though: Physics and AI. Both require a lot of power and can add tremendously to the fun factor in games.
- mark_in_bc, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1Did you ever read the article? It had nothing to do with sales it was about the gaming experience

- archer75, on 12/31/2007, -2/+6I agree. It does provide the most complete experience of any console, no doubt about that. I do own a Wii though and everyone I know who owns one, including myself, is bored to death with it. Just no good games yet. I've been renting games like mad as I have a ton of free rentals at blockbuster and I have yet to find one worth buying.

I guess that's complete- tacklebox, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2You know they fix the RRoD for free right? And extended the warranty to 3 years. And when you get a free month of xbox live if it goes in for warranty. - graemee, on 12/31/2007, -10/+13The 360 did not match the PS3 in Divx support. It exceeds it. Sony did what I actually believed Microsoft would do with they added divx, screw it up. The PS3 can not play xvid, and they are much more restrictive on the file support. Had they done this on release IU would not have waited so long to get one.
- Tomson74, on 12/31/2007, -3/+6Wow really? interesting I can play ANY divx files on the ps3 with no problems.
Maybe you can't because of user error- username9000, on 01/01/2008, -6/+4Try streaming it jackass. The PS3 won't stream xvid. I know I have tried.
360 on the other hand, no problem streaming divx and xvid.- WhereAmI, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1"The PS3 won't stream xvid. I know I have tried."
No you haven't. You don't have access. You know it doesn't work from the internets. - zod000, on 01/02/2008, -0/+0I haven't run into a single xvid file I could not stream. - jostheller, on 12/31/2007, -26/+22I received an Xbox 360 elite for Christmas, so now I finally have all three "next gen" consoles... My first impressions and thoughts were
1. Man this thing is really super freaking LOUD! and I have a falcon CPU!
2. Why the hell is the power brick bigger then my wii?!?!
3. My PS3/wii have wifi built in (i knew this before I received it)
4. The controllers don't come with a rechargeable lithium ion battery? really?
5. I freaking wish this had HD-DVD built in... im not buying that add on.
6. At least I will be able to play some exclusives like halo3 and bioshock.
IMHO, the sound of the unit is really unacceptable. Comparing it to the PS3 is like comparing a toyota car to a 16 wheller semi. If I had to pick one unit to have, teh PS3 would be my choice without a second thought. However lately I seem to be playing with my wii most of all... as soon as I get all those fricken stars in mario though, it'll start collecting dust once again.- gwolf, on 12/31/2007, -9/+6Please return it, better than listening to you whine about it.
- jostheller, on 01/01/2008, -3/+3perhaps you missed my point #6... ill repeat "At least I will be able to play some exclusives like halo3 and bioshock.". for that reason alone ill keep my 360. However if the exclusive ***** stopped, and I could buy mario galaxy, halo3, bioshock, etc for the PS3, id gladly store my other systems in the closet never to be played again.
- username9000, on 01/01/2008, -4/+2If I could put one of those cd thingees in any drive and play stuff I'd be happy!!! you are an idiot.
- jostheller, on 01/01/2008, -2/+3What the hell is your problem? The Processing power of the PS3 is enough to play any game released for the 360 or wii. It is as simple as compiling the game with the software compiler that was built for that system. Obviously you are going to have to do minor tweeks to compensate for system differences (like controllers for example). However 90% of every game for the 360 would play flawlessly on the PS3. 10% rework isn't that big of a deal...
how you logically come to your conclusion is completely illogical. It makes you sound like a 12 year old....

- archer75, on 12/31/2007, -2/+2I bought a wii and I had to buy an ethernet adapter for it. Then a classic controller and gamecube controllers so I could play all virtual console and gamecube games. It gets quite spendy.
- FriedTurkey, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5Dude it is cheaper to upgrade your router. Why did you buy the ethernet adapter? You don't need both the classic controller and the gamecube controller. Maybe you should be wiser on what you spend money on.
- poxonyou, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1You do if you want to play VC and NGC games. However, I think the classic controller is a waste of money as it ONLY plays VC and some Wii games, but no NGC games. But, I hate the NGC controller, so I just bought a cheap Dualshock 2 and a PS2->NGC adapter, TC was about the same as a NGC controller by itself.

- Flare, on 12/31/2007, -20/+14Well ***** YOU Kotaku. The 360 didn't win exactly because it didn't sell the most unit and because it didn't capture the attention of the mass media like the Wii, the true winner this year.
- F3nwick, on 12/31/2007, -8/+2pretty sure the 360 did sell more, for one. Secondly the Wii sold alot of units yes, but games, no. And all the games suck my balls.
- Dignan666, on 12/31/2007, -0/+8No, the Wii sold a hell of a lot more units. In fact, the Wii came out a year after the 360 and has passed the 360 in total sales. Yeah, game sales are another matter, but lets respect the facts.
- AndrewDS, on 12/31/2007, -5/+0In my city (and maybe others), the Best Buy, Gamestop, Target, etc. are alway out of Wiis and when they get more in there's only 3 or 4 on hand. How is Ninetendo selling more then the 360 if stores keep running out because their suppy is low?
- Dignan666, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1I can see this argument easily going in circles...

- Sornos, on 12/31/2007, -0/+6Look at the attach rate. People buy the 360 for games, and you can see it in the high attach rate. People buy the Wii for Wii sports, as it has a very low attach rate.

- jostheller, on 01/01/2008, -1/+5compare apples to apples. I own all 3 and the 360 is the most expensive unit to own.
(xbox360 + rechargeable controller adaptor + wifi adaptor + HD-DVD add on + greater then 20 GB HD) is greater in price then (PS3 80GB unit + 4 dollar HDMI from monoprice)
and on top of being more expensive the unit is the loudest gaming system I have ever owned (and I have owned all major consoles).... seriously the thing is really loud. Maybe you dont notice if you have your surround system turned up to a good level to get you immersed in the game, but those of us with sleeping kids next room over need to keep teh game sound at a level 1. which means you cant hear *****. - theuncommonman, on 01/01/2008, -0/+0please don't do that

- dgreichert, on 12/31/2007, -1/+8The 360 is the first console I've had that I have any games I play more than 1 or 2 weeks and then let it collect dust until a new game comes out. Theres always a hit title out there that never gets old and I can be addicted to for hours on end. The Live community is large enough to keep all the titles alive for a while. The 360 is so well designed that it has evolved drastically since its release. Definitely agree with all of Kotaku's points!!

My Xbox 360 experienced the red rings of death while playing Halo 3 shortly after release. Since in my spare time I was working on a XNA project as a developer this was especially disappointing. So I canceled my XNA developer access while I waited for it to be repaired, and sent the Xbox in. Amazingly fast service in returning it! A couple weeks later a replacement arrived.
This was to be the last positive experience. As I quickly discovered, all of my content was no longer linked to the Xbox. I called Xbox support, and the foriegn support person [I mention this because later he claimed knowledge of US Federal law] informed me that the reason my wife for example could not access the content we had purchased was because her Gold access had expired 9 months ago.
When I pointed out that she could access it as little as 2 months ago, he said he would investigate some more. Then he said that because my box had been replaced I had lost all the content, and would have to re-purchase all of it. I asked him to repeat that and he did. When I expressed my surprise and notified him that I could be recording the call. At this point he informed me that I was violating Federal law by doing so, and he could no longer speak with me. I asked for his supervisor.
22 minutes later I get the supervisor, who apologizes for the prior attempt to claim that Federal law prevented the discussion, and that the prior support person tried to convince me to re-purchase all of my content. After about 30 minutes of deleting content, re-downloading it, etc I am told that its something that they will have to escalate, and that someone will be in touch with me within the next week.
The next day, Frank at Microsoft contacts me via e-mail and phone. He says that sometimes when replaced the DRM authorizations do not get moved over, and they will have a fix for it, but it will take up to 30 days. I am amazed its going to take 30 days, but hey-its Microsoft what can you do?
30 days pass....
The DRM is still preventing other family members from seeing all of the content, and me from seeing some of it. So I e-mail Frank at Microsoft. And theres no response. A couple days later I call, and leave a message. Then a couple days later again I e-mail them again. Its obvious at this point that I am being ignored. So for the first time in my life I file a better business bureau complaint. In that complaint I cover all of this, and state that microsoft stated this would take up to 30 days.
2 days later frank e-mails me stating that he said that it would take a MINIMUM of 30 days, that he did not have my phone number, and that my emails were not received because my issue was closed, and the e-mail no longer monitored.
Unfortunately for Frank calling me a liar upset me, especially given that in this day and age e-mails are often kept. Emails which show the promise to resolve it within 30 days. So I send that back, point out that he has called me before, and ask to speak with a supervisor, since I have issues dealing with people that call me a liar.
Frank informs me that I cannot speak with a supervisor, and that he is as high as I can reach. I ask for a supervisor to contact me, OR have someone other then frank handle my case. I specifically state that I do not wish Frank to contact me anymore.
Frank calls me. Frank is in a room with about 200 people talking in the background making it hard for me to even comprehend what he is saying. He apologizes for calling me a liar, states that was not his intention. He informs me that it is taking longer then expected to move DRM permissions over, and that it will take 30 more days to re-authorize my purchases. He gives me a new case number at this point, and asks me if he can close the case. I tell him no and that his response is unacceptable. I again ask to speak with a supervisor. I am again told that I will not be talking to anyone else but him. That was last week. As of last night the DRM restricts my access. Its been 1 month, 17 days since I first contacted Microsoft about this issue.
I am in awe of how inept all of this appears. Customer service telling me lies, accusing me of violating Federal laws, then they fail to deliver on their 30 day promise, call me a liar, and refusing to transfer my case to someone else who hasn't called me a liar, or allow me to speak with a supervisor. And after 61 days as of today they will not refund my purchases, or allow me access to them.- Sornos, on 12/31/2007, -10/+1You had a bad encounter, but how does bad customer service affect the games lineup?

- deadbaby, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2The Xbox support group is super shady. I think they must have a quota to meet on denying service repair or something because you talk to 2 people and get 2 totally different stories. I can't imagine the reps are just sitting there ***** with people for fun so it must come from above. Here's my story:
My sister bought a 360 December 18th 2006. Has an invoice to prove it. The 360's optical drive died on December 10th. It wouldn't read audio CDs, DVDs or games. She called Xbox support and was told no, you bought your 360 on December 2nd so, sorry, your warranty is up. She told them she had an invoice that stated the purchase date was December 18th and they told her again that their records show it was purchased on the 2nd. She apparently didn't ask how in the world they would have invoices from amazon.com on file. Anyway... she filed a compliant with the better business borough. I called a few days later and quoted, word-by-word, from the warranty agreement that I can submit proof of my purchase date in the form of an invoice. The rep kindly told me that yes, I was right... send it in! We'll fix it for free! I asked her why the last rep lied and she said she would bring it to the attention of a supervisor. Suuuure you will. - bbear, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2You should have told the support person that you were recording the call for quality assurance. Microsoft even plays a message before connecting you to a support person that gives permission for you to do this that states: "Calls may be recorded for quality assurance". By the way I have the same problem. My Xbox 360 got the ring of death and now that I have a new one the only way I can access my paid content is by logging into xbox live. None of my family members can access the content. This is why I hate DRM.
- Choberiba, on 01/01/2008, -0/+0You people are starting to worry me.... my ring-o-death 360 is in for repairs as I type this and I have loads of paid content, such as Shivering Isles for Oblivion. My SO and kid are both using that content for their characters.
Since I just don't have the kind of luck where it will come back without the same problems you've had, I'll be sure and say hi to Frank from you all.

- 9Digits, on 12/31/2007, -1/+4Uhhh.... I guess if you qualify "winning" as being RMA-friendly. LOL Kotaku's got to be the biggest group of retards out there.
- BillyTIdaho, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5I think most tangible metrics would suggest that the Wii won 2007. Although I'm also a fan and owner of the 360, I would tend to disagree that it really outperformed the Wii in 2007. At the same time, I don't think that the 360 disappointed either; it was definitely a good year for the system. But overall, the surprising success that the Wii had throughout 2007 was a dominant story.
- hixxy, on 12/31/2007, -4/+8PS3 - November 17, 2006.
Wii - September 13, 2006.
360 - November 22, 2005.
The only reason the 360 "won" or whatever you want to call it is merely because they have had 2 years on the market. They've been able to really get the feel, and make games that work. Despite having 2 years, they can't even solve hardware issues, let alone make a real name for themselves. (Relying on Bungie to pull them out a shallow grave.)
The Wii and PS3 have only had 1 year to really make a name for themselves. The Wii sold tremendous amounts of units, surpassing that of 360 and quadrupling PS3.
The PS3 has hit some hard times with it's blatant faults in price range, lack of decent gaming, and small community. Although things will gain momentum in 08' with several "hit" titles coming out, I expect sales to increase if they finally get a grip and sell a system, not the sought after media center that the 360 is supposed to be.
The Wii has seen a phenomenal year with a few games doing very well on the market: Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime III, Resident Evil 4 (Although a re-release, was MUCH better on Wii.), and Mario Party 8.
Next year has so much in store for the Wii. Including: Mario Kart and the most hyped game of next year, Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
All in all, I feel that if anyone has won, it would be the Wii or a stalemate to tell you the truth. The 360 stayed in the normal position it has for the past 2 years. Fetal.- rejectpenguin, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1Your launch dates are all wrong..
