- ZincSaucier, on 02/05/2009, -0/+131wait... $120 per single person you want to piss off? if someone did this to me i would feel like i won
- Harabeck, on 02/05/2009, -4/+76The very thought of this is infuriating even if I don't even own an Xbox 360, I know the type who would do this from other games. Microsoft needs to secure the multiplayer so that players can't sniff out each other's IP address.
- SetUpUsTheBmb, on 02/05/2009, -6/+52this ***** is why I dont play halo 3 live anymore, cause the players are colossal *****
- benologist, on 02/05/2009, -1/+44Maybe with a French accent or something?
- mxnate116, on 02/05/2009, -2/+33thank god this wasnt posted somewhere people frequent and can learn from...i hope this crap doesnt spread to much more.
- Abatrour, on 02/05/2009, -0/+28I would laugh, change my mac address on my router to change my IP.
Log back into the server and laugh my ass off some more. - itsJALbert, on 02/05/2009, -0/+23Xbox Live games are hosted by the host's console, not a central server. This keeps overhead costs from being ridiculous, and allows local players to play together without ridiculous latency.
- ejlewis, on 02/05/2009, -2/+25Meddling kids need to stay out of my internets.
- ChairShot83, on 02/05/2009, -5/+26My $50 a year subscription should not allow for this to happen. Stuff like this is why I stopped playing SOCOM on PS2 back in the day..
- AmazingSteve, on 02/05/2009, -0/+20It's ok. One of the little bastards will do it to the wrong guy one day and the smack will get laid down. Kids that use these type of things tend to be dumb as *****. I had some little ***** mail bomb my inbox once. ***** retard did it from his own email address. His ISP was NOT pleased when I called them. His folks probably even less so when the connection was no doubt pulled.
- SSUK, on 02/05/2009, -6/+25Exactly the reason I stopped. If you don't get teamed with some random douche who plays music down the headset, keeps shouting racial slurs down the headset at the top of their pre-pubescent lungs or teamed with idiots who just give up when losing, you play against morons playing on the world's laggiest connections.
Playing locally or on friends only playlists remove this, but just isn't as fun after the Xth time you played the same people. - m3arvk, on 02/05/2009, -0/+18Exactly.
- MRintheKeys, on 02/05/2009, -0/+17Yes, because my Halo record is my only lasting legacy.
/s - JonTheGoose, on 02/05/2009, -1/+18Zees eez reetahrdedeh!
- specter19, on 02/05/2009, -3/+18I agree, We are paying for the service.
- jotux, on 02/05/2009, -3/+18You need an excuse to have sex with your girlfriend? She must be some lady!
- tsotha, on 02/05/2009, -0/+15So it costs $2 per bot, and takes 40-60 bots to really screw someone good... some people have way, way too much money.
- SyKoTiX, on 02/05/2009, -0/+13There's not really anything you can do. They aren't attacking you themselves, they are commanding a bunch of bots or slave computers to do the attacking, much like a general commanding an army.
If you used Cain and Able to detect the IP of those attacking, you'd be wasting your time as often these bots are actually average computer user's computers that have been infected with a Trojan, and often they don't even know that they are attacking you.
If you're talking about getting the IP of the guy from the game, that'd be fine and dandy, but in order for anything to be done you'd have to prove he launched the attack on you. Which is difficult because often the bots don't keep record of who ordered the attack. The alternative would be launching a counter attack in the form of another DDoS, but then you would be lowering yourself to their level... - Snoods, on 02/05/2009, -2/+14OK someone help me out with this. I have had this happen to a few times and have had people threaten me with it. I have Cain & Able installed on my computer so I can sniff their IP, and the article said they could get a $500,000 fine. If they do it and I got their IP address, is their any action I (or someone else) could take to have it reported? How can we get these people caught?
- Commonwealth, on 02/05/2009, -2/+13After playing SOCOM back in the day, today's console glitching seems really tame. I've never seen another game where there would be running battles with every player outside of the map.
- jmill987, on 02/05/2009, -1/+12This is pathetic and disgusting, both the people who sell it and the people who buy it.
- fucknuggets, on 02/05/2009, -1/+12call the FBI. DDoS attacks are a crime.
- addysonclark, on 02/05/2009, -2/+13LOW ORBIT ION CANNON.
- Btcc222, on 02/05/2009, -1/+12Don't know why you're being Dugg down when you're right.
Xbox Live games are hosted by the players, not central servers. - Jelga, on 02/05/2009, -1/+11Haha oh wow. Some people actually take Halo this seriously? That's just a big ***** waste of money. Guess whatever makes those kids epeens feel better.
- versualize, on 02/05/2009, -1/+11I don't think you have a girlfriend, xbox live, halo 3, or an xbox. Enjoy your colecovision.
- metateck, on 02/05/2009, -0/+10I don't have xbox, so maybe this is stupid, but can't you just report the player you were playing against when this happens? I'm guessing these prepubescent badasses brag about it over the chat, so what's the problem?
- deweyhewson, on 02/05/2009, -6/+15If the consoles are connected to a central server then only that server needs to see the individual IPs.
- SeanRockCity, on 02/05/2009, -0/+9ZING!
- gameboyhippo, on 02/05/2009, -0/+9This sucks. I thought the article was going to be about something cool, like the botnet had awesome AI that played the game like a pro or something like that.
- tobster85, on 02/05/2009, -0/+8Nope. Well, unless you have some IDS that's set to look for DDoS.
Firewall would block access to your network, but it's not going to stop the zombie machines from pinging you or attempting to connect.
That's the point of a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) to saturate the target's network with external requests, such that it cannot respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly as to be rendered effectively unavailable.
Edit (wiki explains it better :p ): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_att ... - gameboyhippo, on 02/05/2009, -0/+8That's because most diggers are 12 year old morons ("Must be the eeproms!")
- Andrwmorph, on 02/05/2009, -1/+9Left 4 Dead uses dedicated servers!
- StrikerF35, on 02/05/2009, -10/+17Are you high? If one Xbox is going to be communicating with other Xboxes, it's going to need to know all their IPs. There's no way that you can disguise the destination or source when you're sending game data like that.
- tsotha, on 02/05/2009, -0/+7Right... that's why there's a dash between the 40 and the 60.
- doug89, on 02/05/2009, -1/+8The script kiddies use a packet sniffer to ascertain the IP address of the target. The only potential way to prevent this (that is would likely to be eventually broken) is to use a client-server model for online gaming. Xbox Live uses a client-client architecture, and thus is vulnerable.
I can't say what the PS3 uses, since I have never owned one, but from what I have been told by friends you can host matches, therefore the PS3's online service is also susceptible. - cloudberries, on 02/05/2009, -0/+7Well, if I'm the one who has to put down my 360 controller for an hour or two, you're the whiny ***** with limited emotional response who's $100 down.
- Larssonk22, on 02/05/2009, -4/+11these kiddies shouldnt even be allowed to play the game! I miss the arcade days, were if you behaved like a punk you got a real life beat down!
Game Over - specter19, on 02/05/2009, -1/+7Talk to MS about it.
- XxpokemasterxX, on 02/05/2009, -4/+9This is retarded. I don't know how else to say it.
- FuZi0nDET, on 02/05/2009, -0/+5Stupid question, but couldn't a decent fire wall take care of one of these attacks?
- ngmcs8203, on 02/05/2009, -1/+6Gears of War was pretty much like that.
- cloudberries, on 02/05/2009, -0/+5'Fraid not. All you'll get is the IP address(es) of some poor souls with infected computers splurging out the attacks.
You could always get the IPs, track down the infected and lecture them on good PC security though. That'd be doing your little bit to make the world a better place. - inactive, on 02/05/2009, -2/+7get a job, kiddies.
- foomojive, on 02/05/2009, -0/+5you know, if someone threatened me with this, i would say, "go for it, i look forward to costing you a lot of money so i can just change my IP address in time for the next game." and then leave them negative feedback and report them.
- Andrwmorph, on 02/05/2009, -0/+5It reminds me of the good ol' days when people would use the standby button on their modems to cheat in Halo 2. What is the point of cheating in an online video game anyway? Whats the point of having a good rank if you get raped by everybody you don't cheat against?
- dig1x, on 02/05/2009, -1/+6I stopped coming to digg because people like you fail to see the irony in saying "the players are colossal *****".
I do however play Halo 3 frequently, and rarely encounter anyone that isnt anything more than mildly annoying. That's what the mute button is for.
However, have you played on PSN? Without the community rating system, PSN has vastly worse. - deweyhewson, on 02/05/2009, -2/+7I am aware Xbox Live uses the console as the host, what I'm saying is that there should be central servers.
Could that be expensive for Microsoft? Yes. But you are paying for it! It's not like you are just piggybacking on a system.
Valve provides servers for their games' online components, and you aren't even paying for Steam. - jgtg32a, on 02/05/2009, -0/+51. Hook a Linux box up directly to your modem.
2. Hook Xbox up to Linux box
3. Enable masquerading for your xbox, I don't know the port number
4. Tarpit all unsolicited connections to your IP with IPtables.
5. Laugh at their feeble attempts to DDOS you - kinseyincanada, on 02/05/2009, -0/+5what loser would do this to someone. Plus i highly doubt this is mainstream in the Halo community.
