- FalseProphecy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+32I don't know about you guys, but the thumbsticks at different heights on the controller throws me off a little.
- Wailord, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20The positioning of the analogs somewhat bothered me, but I found it fun. You can't go wrong with Katamari...
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23Don't get too excited about it... the demo is limited to 3 minutes of play at a time, on one fairly small level. You can redo the level as much as you want, but as far as demos go, it's pretty unexciting.
Also, I found that it was hard to control the katamari compared to the PS2 version. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+22The fact that this demo is North America only really, really riled me. Microsoft need to stop providing this limited service and start ENCOURAGING content owners to make things available globally.
We're people too! - djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15You have no soul.
- Azimuth1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Honestly I didn't even really feel a difference.
- sandymac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10It just doesn't feel right. Others have said it's the location of the thumb sticks on the 360 controller but I think it's the springs in the controller. But maybe I'm biased because I played the hell out of the previous Katamari versions.
- Retnuh730, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15yeah, Katamari isnt suited well to the Xbox controller. The PS2 ones were awesome to control because of the analog sticks being parallel, the different positions threw me off A LOT.
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Not anymore.
- lastrite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I think he means because the one is higher up than the other.
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7This demo was awesome. I never played Katarmari before but after playing this demo I'll have to buy this game at some point.
- hollismb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I kinda felt the same way. I found the controls a little confusing/odd though, like some poeple mentioned. Just because it kinda felt like dual analog FPS/Splinter Cell style, but also kinda...not. Hard to explain.
- mattcoady, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Just one more round and thats it.....
Just one more round and thats it.....
Just one more round and thats it..... - dtox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6IANAL - It is usually because of ownership rights (or distribution rights). I don't know specifics with Katamari but, for example, Namco could have sold the distribution rights for Europe (or Australia, or wherever) to XYZ Publisher. It would be breach of contract for Namco to release the demo where they have sold the rights. It is XYZ's job to do the demo elsewhere.
- Sornos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Just out of curiosity, what is the largest katamari you guys managed to roll up in the time limit? My record, so far, is 4m56cm.
- TheSaladMan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I've never understood the point in region coding something simple like a game demo. I can understand translation issues, but there's no reason not to release it to other English speaking countries.
- mattyice11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Blame the publisher - not Microsoft.
- Azimuth1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6If you're in the UK (as I am), you should have a spare American Live account for situations like this, so you can download stuff off their Marketplace. I have a Japanese one too, just in case.
- Torpov, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6The demo wasn't bad, and the analogs weren't too bad after about 10 seconds of getting used to, but the whole thing was unimpressive, partly because of the very constrained time limit, and partly because it just feels like the PS2 version. Not that it's bad, keeping with the aesthetic of the other games, but meh. Anyone who can't play it isn't missing much, if anything.
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I find the Xbox 360 controller the most comfortable controller out there except for the original Xbox controller. But the original Xbox controller won't fit through my front door ;)
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4DAMMIT! I KNEW I should have waited instead of buying that OXM issue for the demo >.<
However, was anyone else very disappointed with the demo?
I understand that developers/publishers sometimes worry about showing you too much or letting you play too much of the game with a demo, but this demo is so incredibly heavily limited its ridiculous.
This demo is like the equivalent of a Halo 3 demo that only allows you to play inside a small enclosed area, only lets you use the Pistol, no vehicles, and only gives you 8 minutes of playtime.
It's incredibly barren and limited. This is a pretty bad idea, because it makes people who have never played Katamari Damacy have a much lower view of what the real game is like.
I wasn't expecting an entire level (Although considering how many levels Katamari 1 and 2 had I don't see why an entire level would be a problem), but at least 5 minutes if not more and the ability to go to larger areas once you get big enough in the demo. I think the fact that you was always limited to a single small confined area in the demo is it's biggest flaw.
It dosent give a good representation of what the full Katamari games are like. - HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's what the creator does want. He's not associated with the games anymore.
- inio, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Talk about it. 400MB for ... 3 minutes of gameplay in 1 level? WTF are they doing to take up THAT much room? The PS2 only had 32MB of memory, and each map (or, well, map LoD level) fit into that. Somehow I don't see the slight poly-count and texture res increase blowing that up by a factor of 10. This reeks of laziness on the part of the developer - not stripping out all the resources the demo didn't need.
- timpkmn89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It could also be a marketing problem. If the game won't be coming out in Europe until mid-2008 (which I don't know if it will or not), it'd make more sense to wait until Spring to hype it up instead of now.
- MartyMcSly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2OK, so it turns out it is US, Canada and Mexico only! Rather than bitch about it here I did some research and found a workaround. Simply create a new hotmail account, specifying US Address, e.g. State: New York, City: New York City Address: Whatever. Create a new xbox 360 profile and link up this newly created live account (hotmail account) to your xbox account. At one point in the process you will need to enter a telephone number. Just use this one: 1-866-530-1234. Follow the rest of the steps and enjoy Beautiful Katamari.
- Alphateam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Is this the same demo that came with the Official Xbox Magazine?
- Zero2aHero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I was pleased at how smoothly this game played, I think I shall be picking it up.
- javabeta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2塊?
- cryonix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And what? you go around collecting coins, rings, artifacts... Then what? Or perhaps shoot every living thing thats around... Then what? Or even go on raids and Level Up... Then what? Seriously most games are pretty lame, games like this at least add some diversity to a market that is lacking ideas. Don't get me wrong I enjoy most games. Just not as much as when I was younger.
- samadam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I understand that its a little bit different.
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3But unlike Blue Dragon, this game doesn't suck ass. I downloaded the Blue Dragon demo and couldn't stand playing it for more than 3 minutes.
- Patogrande, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I think it's very unfortunate that the demo tunes out after only three minutes. A lot of the demos I've played recently can go on for hours - even Blue Dragon had a sixty minute timer.
- SamboGT, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Guess I need a 360, now...
- christoscamaro, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5personally, i'm more of a fan of the ps2 controller over the 360's. Yes, I do own both systems.
Thanks for the heads up on the release! - GeneralGore, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It was fun, but I was disappointed that it only lasted 3 minutes. They should have at least given us 1 full level.
- CReyes4182, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1wowy wow wow
- samadam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I don't usually play Japanese games (by habit, not principle), and I have never owned a playstation, so I have always wondered about this game. I do wish I could play for longer so I could pick up bigger things. It is very fun the first time, but I don't know if the pattern would get old.
- CReyes4182, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1wow
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -9/+10Haha, are people really THAT thrown off by the thumbsticks?
It's all relative. It doesn't matter if one hand is in front of your body and the other is behind it - if you don't have the coordination to move your thumbs in parallel motion then I dunno what's wrong with ya. Seriously - try it. Stretch your arms out to the side then move your thumbs to the 9 PM position, then 3, then 12, then 6, etc. It's not rocket science.
It's not *that* awkward - and if there is any, it's gone within the first minute of playing. - Fentekreel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1or they could just allow universal content....
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have the OXM demo and played this downloadable demo. Felt exactly the same to me.
- magixx2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Only 3 meter and a bit
- ha1f, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I'm so pissed they dropped the ps3 version... The SIXAXIS + Katamari could have been epic...
- lokoluis15, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1魂?
- sleemo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They don't really explain it well in the demo -- Your father (the floating head in the beginning that talks about Rainbows) is the King of the Cosmos and has destroyed all the stars. Your task is to roll things into a ball shape that will be lifted into the sky to form a star/constallation/satellite/etc.
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2That's the same for most games, especially Geometry Wars. There is something a little off, most people get used to it eventually though.
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7You'll get used to it.
- louiedog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Everyone suggesting that is getting dugg down. I'm not sure why. By the end of the 3 minutes I was totally used to it being different.
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A little over 4m.
- MJG2007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1To each his own. I can certainly understand how some people just don't find the same kind of enjoyment in this remarkably unique and challenging game. I find it incredibly addictive and the cut scenes are usually so cheesy that you can't help but laugh and wonder what kind of demented mind wrote the backstory (The King of the Universe got really drunk and put out all the stars and now is abusing his child by making him fix it).
