- AllenS, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35Well, that would be the entire country as a whole.
- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30That description isn't really fair to California. Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina combined have only half the number of people but more than double the number of hate groups. I'd be more concerned about New Jersey with a quarter of the population and half the number of hate groups together with almost five times the population density and you're much more likely to run into trouble there than in California.
I don't mean to pick on New Jersey. South Jersey is consistently ranked among the best places to live in the USA. Just showing that simple numbers don't always tell the whole story. What isn't stated is how many people are in the hate groups, how active the groups are, and how violent they are. - Skizzot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Alaska has a Jewish defense league....why?
- archlich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Wait till you see the one published for the entire world =)

- StevethePirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Yeah. If they get any bigger they become religions.
- nstanosheck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It seems unlikely that 5 states are completely free of what they call hate-groups.
- insinuate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12most cults don't represent the majority, thats why they are cults.
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15polar bears hate jews.
- archlich, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12For the longest time I thought the reason Vermont was peaceful was because the population of cows was more than people... but I did my due research, and found myself mistaken( 608,827 people vs 153,000 cows) But still, I'd be more concerned about cows forming a hate group...
- tekmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That's the result of an extremely homogeneous population. (98% white!)
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I don't see "Church of Scientology" listed.
- unibomber999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Vermont has no hate groups because everyone is white and the state is the size of a large backyard. Unless you hate maple syrup, it's would be hard to get anyone riled up there.
- pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Done!
I did a really quick photoshop job with the 2004 elections as the base for the red/blue states...

Damn, I miss New Mexico. - pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Not be an ass...
But I think assman has a point - These are based on the 2004 election...

Admittedly, population isn't taken into consideration... - johndi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Neville Chamberlain learned the had way what ignoring hate groups can lead to. Ignoring bullies doesn't even work in preschool.

Hate is a normal part of being human. We really like some things and we really dislike other things. You may hate some of my views ... just as I may hate some of yours.
However there is "good hate" and "bad hate".
The SPLC doesn't just randomly pick groups they consider "hateful" only because they personally hate them. They chose them based on certain legal and moral principles that have a track record of causing social unrest and inciting violence.
Whats different between good hate and bad hate is how it metastasizes. The bad hate is the one that involves picking on individuals purely based on some negative stereotype of race, color, religion or advocating some sort of crime against others. Besides just being mean... this of course leads to civil unrest since no one likes to be treated anything less than human.
Of course a great deal of what we hate comes down to personal taste and some people don't follow the conventions I advocate. However it is notable to mention I didn't invent these rules They arrived to me via documents created by some of the finest minds humanity had to offer.
For example freedom of religion is engrained in Article2 UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights (which nearly every nation on earth signed after WW2) and Article 1 of the US Bill of Right (two of the greatest human rights documents in the world IMHO) Therefore it follows hating an individual purely for their religious beliefs or background is considered wrong.

Anyhow.. those are my personal thoughts on the issue. You are free to hate me personally for having them. :)
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5New Jersey's got issues. Last place to recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. day (by several years) and one of (if not the) last states to recognize manumission. It's not really that big a surprise.
- TheMrEman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Are you talking about Dog, the Bounty Hunter? If so, there is no way he's a hate group!
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@pbjorge12
Right. Total amount of groups. That's a great statistic to show. I have three cars, you have one. I may have paid a thousand a car, and you may have paid twenty thousand for your one, but hell, I have three!
I'm obviously superior, eh?
Edit: What I mean to say is this: That map you have is completely useless and slightly inflammatory. It shows and proves nothing but implies way too much. - Geener, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Whoa whoa whoa, wait a minute... Wyoming has 5 hate groups? Jeez, there are only like five people living there! That's a hate group per person.
- jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@4answer2:
To be fair, NH had instead "Civil Rights Day" which honored all those who fought for civil rights, as opposed to just one man. Despite that, they eventually bowed to pressure and renamed it MLK Jr. Day. - bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4cynic, shoutwire.com called. They wud gladly welcome u with open arms. I personally think u wud fit in really well there
- Geener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Heh, you ran 'em out huh? Pitchforks 'n torches? I guess that leaves the other four of you pretty lonely. I like my anthill, buddy!
P.S.: On a serious note, I'm glad you were able to get them out, if only we could do that with all of them everywhere. - MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I lol'd when I read "SS Enterprises" for California.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3just to let people on here know the nation of Islam does not represent all the black muslims in the US not even 30%
- Tamriel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Soooo... who isn't surprised by Vermont?
- caimlas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, there's that, and...
I'd like it explained to me as to why there are:
1) A large number of "white" and "jewish" hate groups and
2) Why there is a complete lack of the known Muslim (eg. Hezbollah), black (eg. Crips), and Hispanic hate groups (eg. MS13)
Because, last I checked, the groups in "1" commit many fewer rapes, murders, assaults, etc. than groups in "2".
Oh, right - it has something to do with them being 'minorities' and 'under priviledged', so they're just 'acting out'. - Derfus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4hawaii is full of racist asian gangs, this map isn't exactly accurate.
- Chesterfield, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Doesn't Utah have serious Mormon Fundamentalist fringe groups with dangerous ideologies?
This map needs some closer analysis. - 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wiki says:
N.H. becomes last state to honor King with a holiday. - unibomber999, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@Max
You live out in the sticks and have never heard of them? Finally, real proof that they don't exist. - sorrodos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Do you perhaps mean a "Fundamentalist Latter Day Saint" group, as is listed on the Utah page?
- Sp0rAdiC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Proud to live in one of the six states with no hate groups. Go Vermont!

- iamanalog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hahahahah i knew the dude who lived down the street from me when i was a kid was in a christian type hate group, weird dude indeed, gave out bibles for Halloween, and i enjoyed egging his house
- hiscity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't just think about the classroom, though there is plenty of institutionalized hate (for instance in marxist texts, ex. the proponency of "conflict theory" in sociology). Consider research projects, groups that meet in colleges, political activity, and the elitists attitudes of many. Obviously, agreeing with your point, there are plenty of religious colleges also.
I'd certainly agree with "many churches' even beyond the basic "hate the sin, love the sinner" attitude. By extension of course that means some mosques, covens, cults, and other places of assembly. There is a strong religious bent to KKK and Christian Identity groups. Curses such as found in VooDoo and hex spells are additional examples.
We can also add in some police departments, like in LA. Certainly also, plenty of organized crime groups.
Then there's Bill Maher, Michael Savage, and so many of that ilk.
Definitely Hollywood.
Many gay groups.
And certainly every anti-christian faction.
Have we filled up the map yet? Are you on it? - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's nice. You should try adjusting for population ratios too though and maybe consolidate some of the groups like the Nation of Islam and JDL into one organization tally.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I also live in South Jersey, that is just crap. Look at ANY list of top places to live or work in the US, and you will find Jersey towns in the top 10. NJ is the most diverse state out there. Hate groups live in areas of racial homogeny and that includes Cali, and many Southern states. You can't look at populations, you look a ethnic and racial diversity.
- sabotank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cool!!

*shudders* - abdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3hey, theres no islamic hate group. hmm, you'd think with all the "terrorism" they're known for, they'd have at least one group somewhere.
