- ZeNiTH456, on 10/24/2008, -5/+208He never mentioned actually seeing the aircraft.. Maybe it really was "a secret U.S. project to create phantom aircraft on radar screens to test Soviet air defenses".
That sounds cool, but why wouldn't we use it more often? - boardthis, on 10/24/2008, -5/+193lol this was on thursday night weekend update... "Another narrow escape for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."

So if you were running the military and your radar picked up some kind of massive UFO, you'd tell your pilots to not bother firing rockets because the UFO probably has shields and phaser beams? Remind me to never make you my Secretary of Defense should I ever become president.

- chownrus, on 10/25/2008, -2/+46So we've finally seen McCain's October surprise.
McCain: My friends, I know how to deal with aliens. "That guy" doesn't know the first thing about aliens. As a fighter pilot in the War of the Worlds, I dealt with the tripods first hand. - PhillyMJS, on 10/25/2008, -0/+40"That sounds cool, but why wouldn't we use it more often?"
The surprise factor.
In 1986, when the US did the air strike on Libya to get Khaddafi, they were going to use F-117s. At the last moment they changed it to conventional aircraft, which actually ended up saving Khaddafi's life because he got enough advance notice from radar detection to get outta dodge.
IIRC, according to the book "Skunk Works," the Secretary of Defense himself scrapped the idea of using the stealth fighter for the strike because they wanted to keep its existence a secret from the Soviets "until we hit them with it." - xavyre, on 10/25/2008, -0/+34Who says we don't already have flying aircraft carriers?
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -2/+36Sorry, got so flustered by the inherent humorlessness of these responses that I posted this as a main reply. Anyhow:
HOLY ***** how can you people be so humorless? Why in the world would you think that a reply signed "Thx, Bill Pullman" -- who played an alien-fighting jet fighter pilot President in a movie -- should be taken seriously?
Many apologies that my joke came off as "arrogant." It truly wasn't my intention. No apologies for calling you humorless though, no matter how arrogant it makes me sound.
p.s. ADHD, Do you know how ***** idiotic you sound when you can't spell "***** arrogant?" Haw haw. - lead2thehead, on 10/25/2008, -1/+35So am I correct in assuming that he never actually saw the object? He only describes its radar signature. It seems much more likely that somebody was experimenting with radar scattering technology.
- strangewill, on 10/25/2008, -2/+34I also suggest Green Eggs and Ham.
- edebolt, on 10/25/2008, -1/+32but I thought the US govt was in partnership deal with the Gray's Alien pact of 1956 made at Edwards AFB which was the predecessor to Area 51. Why would the USAF want to shoot down their buddies?
- cosmosprince, on 10/25/2008, -1/+30haha that guy thought your name is Bill Pullman
- neodorian, on 10/25/2008, -11/+39UFO =/= alien spaceship.
This guy probably had a radar *****, got orders to fire off some missiles, and then when the glitch went away, the military didn't exactly want it known that we came close to firing off a bunch of missiles into the air at nothing.
Move along people.
Nothing to see here
/Barbrady - WhiskeyWrites, on 10/24/2008, -2/+27I'm going to say a little of both.

More evidence of alien mind rays. - dieboldcracy, on 10/25/2008, -7/+31so EVERYONE's radar was malfunctioning? the radar on the ground that sent him scrambling to open fire AND his F-86's radar. all glitching in the same way? that doesn't sound likely
- WhiteMike87, on 10/25/2008, -3/+27Project Blue Book is an interesting read. They declassified it so you can probably find it at your library.

Sounds like he met one the aliens he was chasing..... - DestroyingAngel, on 10/25/2008, -1/+22UFO = unidentified flying object. It doesn't have to do anything with alien or extraterrestrials. Anything that is not identified on the radar is a UFO
- dn11, on 10/25/2008, -0/+20I blame the hardcore sex in Mass Effect
- GenghisTom, on 10/25/2008, -2/+22Unless there was some kind of atmospheric anomaly going on. Might have been a freak electrical storm that was giving off weird radar signatures, or maybe it was caused by the aurora borealis. There are tons of unexplained phenomena in the atmosphere. However, without looking into this further (which the article seems to suggest they didn't do), this event should be firmly in the "Huh, that's weird" category.
- tdave365, on 10/25/2008, -3/+23I don't know why everyone gets so excited about "UFOs". A UFO is strictly an "unidentified flying object". Because of that, most people have seen one at one point in their life, and, most people, when polled, believe in them. The trick most media agents cast is pretending that the UFO meaning has something to do with aliens or creatures from outer space.
In a militarily sensitive situation, any UFO would naturally be alarming and suspect. So this situation, save for the trick I just pointed out, is unremarkable and not newsworthy. - Tr33fiddy, on 10/25/2008, -0/+20I say scary;
Yes, shoot down a UFO. A UFO capable of interstellar and probably faster-than-light travel with technology far beyond our own that appears to merely be visiting our planet, rather than invading us.
Shoot it down because 1. you CAN shoot down something vastly more advanced than anything we have with a F-86 D Sabre and 2. I'm sure the vastly more advanced alien race won't mind one bit. - Raian, on 10/25/2008, -0/+18They were probably more interested in seeing the UFO shoot back.
- xavyre, on 10/25/2008, -1/+19Dear, Jackass,

- necromancer, on 10/25/2008, -3/+17Wait, you mean 1957 radar technology might have had a flaw in it? No way, because the computers in 1957 were awesome, and barely took up an entire room! I mean, UNIVAC had enough memory to store 1000 words! You just can't fool that type of super-computer technology.
- eigenweasel, on 10/25/2008, -0/+14That is verifiably true. It says so on several websites.

The one thing that occurred to me while reading your post was that you assumed any aliens in existence would just be more advanced versions of the human race. I don't think it is likely that humans are following in some other civilization's footsteps. What if they have never had a need for stealth technology wherever they come from? What if their planet has an atmospheric makeup that would make the gases around them shine brightly as they passed through it? If they developed some sort of stealth technology, it might not even be effective against radar. Radar is just something that happens to work well on our planet. - inactive, on 10/25/2008, -5/+17When it comes to people spotting UFO's, I always look at it like this. If aliens are traveling thousands of light years to visit us, you would assume they have our level of technology and much more. As we speak, our military is working on visual stealth, aka invisibility cloak. It's not that difficult, you just need to cover the surface of the object you wish to hide with millions of cells that act as both camera and monitor, constantly showing the viewer a view of what is directly behind it in real-time. If we are doing this in labs and prototypes, I would imagine the aliens would be able. Now, if the aliens want to be seen, they would make themselves known, but if they want to remain hidden, wouldn't they use their cloaks? We developed stealth technology 40 years ago, and have been improving on it. Wouldn't the aliens have even more advanced stealth that allows them total radar invisibility? Just like a modern F-35 would be able to fly right through radar in 1945. an alien craft should be able to do the same to our current state of technology. People that think aliens are flying around earth, always assume the aliens have invented the tech to fly over light speed, and fly without using the lift from the air in our atmosphere, like our airplanes and helicopters. Why is it their tech is so advanced, yet when they get to earth, their technology becomes about the same level as our experimental aircraft? Why aren't they cloaked? Why do they allow themselves to be picked up by our primitive radar?
