- m1th, on 10/12/2007, -2/+56It should be the other way around shouldn't it? We, the common people should be the ones telling our governments how to behave. WE should be setting up CCTV cameras in THEIR offices.
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -5/+58Will they be able to hear me telling them to :
"***** off you nosy bastards." right before i smash said scamera? - toran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Or, you know, you could go straight to the sources from which it gained inspiration, such as 1984.
- sonaro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29You guys need to protest this by getting a few hundred people with loud speakers to follow around officials whenever they're out in public and just nit pick every damn thing they do.
- greywolfexcel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27We don't need the government to tell us how to behave correctly. I can correct my own actions, thank you very much.
- keppj0nes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23"you cant loiter here"
"you cant protest here"
"you cant play guitar here"
"you cant ask for change here" - Tarnum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21"‘Smith!’ screamed the shrewish voice from the telescreen. ‘6079 Smith W.! Yes, you! Bend lower, please! You can do better than that. You're not trying. Lower, please! That's better, comrade. Now stand at ease, the whole squad, and watch me.’
A sudden hot sweat had broken out all over Winston's body. His face remained completely inscrutable. Never show dismay! Never show resentment! A single flicker of the eyes could give you away. He stood watching while the instructress raised her arms above her head and — one could not say gracefully, but with remarkable neatness and efficiency — bent over and tucked the first joint of her fingers under her toes."
"1984" - hollowex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19If it has to be reposted a million times to get people to really begin to think about what is happening in "free" societies I say "let it be".
- ShadySpace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19FTA: "Competitions would also be held at schools in many of the areas for children to become the voice of the cameras, Mr Reid said."
That is ***** terrifying. It's actively involving the young in an attempt to make such things seem "normal" to them. - kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I'm honestly scared by developments like these. Like all other intrusions into personal privacy, it will be abused by the government.
I wish the Labour leadership and cabinet didn't have such an authoritarian streak. - ScoobyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Yes, America, where the government has the good sense of keeping its citizen surveillance programs secret. Yay America.
- SandorClegane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Further evidence that the government of the UK is completely batsh** insane with paranoia and power-hunger. You would think that people would do something about it but they, like we here in the US have a rather bad case of notmyproblemitis,
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Wow! I understand why the rest of the world hates the US right now; invading and occupying countries is never really looked upon favorably... but why is it that citizens of the UK don't seem to be as unhappy with their government as we are with our own right now? Their freedoms are being taken away at a rate much faster than our own, and initiatives are being put in place there that new elections may never be able to undo. It's starting to get very scary over there...
- pizpot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"You! Yes, you! Stand still laddy!"
- Revo75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@george it's all in your choice of words by putting "talking" in quotes it gave him the digger's advantage
- Ulisses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Or maybe it's because geekchic (right...) has hundreds of friends, read digg-traders.
- dlroo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@Toran
That book was amazing and very disturbing. Who of us would have the balls of Winston Smith, the protagonist, to defy the party? - jclarke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What worries me is the bit at the end saying about "talking back will end you up in more truble".
I was hoping to make some friends :( - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18http://digg.com/gadgets/UK_Governments_talking_CCTV_cameras

2 stories submitted by me.
How does this make it to front page instead of mine.
I both gave a video of one in action (Thought i submitted it as a video???), and the story. - bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Please take back what you just said about Tony Blair.... and put that can in the trash"
- SirRudy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9An underlying premise in the architecture of Bentham's panopticon was that the public would have access to the control room to see that everything was on the up and up. In today's example, the public is the prisoner under examination and has no such access.
- DeskFlyer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Chancellor Sutler approves.
- JohnP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9crimsonblur - Im not going to resort to calling you a 'stupid american', but where the heck are you getting your news?
Can you please give me examples of what you are saying?.. Our government is left wing and peace loving (you are allowed to laugh at that right now). We condemn mistreatment of innocent civilians and prisoners - who runs guatanamo bay?? - the world over. We have an extremely generous social system which ensures that everyone gets a fair chance in life. I cant think of a single law thats been passed which infringes our rights.
Yes these cameras may seem a bit quirky, but how are they imposing on people? They are only taking away peoples freedom to drop littler or start fights. If a police officer was in the area you would be fined £50 for dropping litter and arrested for starting a fight. So which is it? Are all police officers evil, or is the government trying to cut down on the need to employ police officers to walk around telling people to stop dropping littler and generally ***** about in our city centers..??
I think a lot of you people should come to the UK, instead of watching children of men. - YourEvilness, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10NEWS REPORT: UK vandalism, all time high!
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Big Brother, 1984, Minority Report.... ring a bell?
I wonder if the government officials approving these plans have read or watched any of these? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Who takes a dump in front of a camera? What kind of city is Baltimore?!
- jhaven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7We had these in Baltimore, though with pre-recorded messages instead of live operators, to try and curb illegal dumping.
It was a failure. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No, this is up-to-date news - the story before was about a trial scheme in one town. Now 20 towns nationwide will be adopting the scheme.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6hollowex.. is there a large group of people out to silence you for your unique opinion?
I'm sure we can find get you treatment for that... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6With developments like these, is it any wonder that science fiction such as '1984', 'V for Vendetta' and 'Children of Men' are set in a clamped-down London of the future? It's all too plausible.
- JohnP, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yeah, silly UK! Dunno why they accept the patriot act, guantanamo bay and countless other governme..... Oh wait........
- hollowex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat? pretty deep
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8or just start shooting down the cameras. wait, most people can't get a gun in the UK. perhaps more tires being burned on them like they do with ticket cameras?
- roguepixel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Your V mask, never leave home without it. Would be kinda nifty to see a load of people wearing them as a regular item of clothing in response to this moronic idea.
- livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Of course they have. Where else do you think they come up with ideas?
They are watching such movies and rooting for the bad guy. - helinism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ahh well it will give the chavs someone to talk to and play with as the wretched things will surely attract more trouble then they deter!
- ScoobyG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I read the article then went back to the top, hoping to see a publish date of April 1st.
No such luck. This is ***** insane. - roodammy44, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes, god bless America, the land of legalised torture, Ignorance and Richest Man Succeeds.
To be honest, though, I'm from the UK and I'm sickened by this. I was actually barked at by a camera, and I wasn't even doing anything wrong!!
The western world is turning increasingly towards facism.
The choice is to move to countries that are a bit more liberal, like Scandinavian ones or get imprisoned for protesting.
Don't you know protesting without a permit is now a crime in central london. - Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You don't have to pay people as much to sit in an air conditioned room all day, and they also have many cameras up on a monitor. They only need to be talking on one at once. So one guy can still do the work that 5 people would be doing if they were actually on the street.
- pizpot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4maybe they are protesting and the news is just not getting out?
- SandorClegane, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The citizens of the UK are much more used to being "ruled" by a domineering unrestrained government than we are. They were ruled by kings for a 1500 years, and the romans before that. They're used to having their lives micromanaged. We've only had a government that wants to control our day-to-day lives for about a hundred years or so. Give us another fifty or so and we'll be right there with them at this rate though.
- JohnP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lol! Now thats irony! At least those $$billions were spent on a non lethal weapon instead of more nukes.
- pizpot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7You would think the UK teens would plan a time when everyone takes out as many cameras as they can.
"All in all it was just a brick in the wall."
...and they fought the nazis, why? Wait till they hook the heat/pain guns up to the cameras. Even if you get away, the RFID will rat you out and when you get home, your door will lock and the paddy wagon will come. - Revo75, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12I for one welcome our CCTV talking camera overlords...
- shuffle2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4this makes me want to go to the UK just to smash them.
- SirRudy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thinking of Foucault, actually...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I bet the first guy to vandalize a camera will be called a terrorist and put in jail.
How long will it take to get to America? I mean I saw red-light cameras in the back-woods of Texas put up without a fight. I hate the "end times." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@fs77
Because one is a video and one is a text article.
But for some reason even though I clicked submit a video it didn't go into the video section.
The video shows people the cameras actually talking. The article just talks about it. - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Trust me, they're needed in Middlesbrough.
I think it's absurd using them for stuff like littering mind. -
