- EatingPie, on 11/21/2008, -2/+24I saw the aftermath of the LA Riots a few months afterward, visiting my cousin who was attending dental school there. You'd drive down these perfect LA streets, then suddenly a building completely burned to nothing, like a bomb had gone off. There were random spots of this all over the place. I was awestruck, but after three months, my cousin just saw it as normal by that point.
The riots were also due to a large-scale hatred of the LA Police. The Rodney King verdict was just the spark. I was at a rock concert at the LA Collesium, a guy ran down to the field area seating from the stands. He passed two cops with his arms raised in excitement, and one cop pulled a billy club and nailed him in the stomach. He collapsed like a dead man. The cops both stood over him for a few seconds, then sauntered away as he lay there clutching his stomach. No help. No nothing.
The riots were not justified by any means. But I believe the horrible reputation the LAPD had around that time was well-deserved.

- maz2331, on 11/21/2008, -1/+21WOW - This one was REALLY a riot...
9. Tulsa Race Riot
In 1921, America witnessed the worst example of racial violence in history. When a white female elevator operator claimed that a black man has sexually assaulted her in the elevator, violence broke out. The man fled the scene and a manhunt begun for his capture. This precipitated a riot that claimed the lives of hundreds of people. The rioting got so bad that the opposing sides of blacks and whites, many of whom were WWI veterans, began forming battle lines and digging trenches, waging a makeshift war against each other. Overall, 35 city blocks were destroyed by fire, leaving 10,000 homeless and causing estimates of 1.8 million (this would amount to 21 million in today’s money). - maz2331, on 11/21/2008, -0/+18GIRLS ROCK YOUR BOYS!
- Portagine, on 11/21/2008, -0/+17In 1967 my dad was 19 years old and helping a guy restore homes in Detroit. The way he tells it, the day before the riots the local children stopped by the home he was working on and asked to help with the work he was doing. The next day, after the riots erupted, him and his boss had to collect their tools from the home, and the same children who had been so willing to help came by with chains wrapped around their fists and tried to kill my dad and his boss.
Two years later my dad was in Vietnam as a door gunner on a helicopter, fighting in the war, but when you hear him talk about the riots it's almost as though that was scarier for him.
I now live about a mile from where the riots began, and 41 years later the area still hasn't recovered. It's sad that the riots took such a toll on my city, but I have hope things will turn around some day. - MagMan68Classic, on 11/21/2008, -0/+16WE'LL GET WILD WILD WILD
- ianmack, on 11/20/2008, -2/+17That list was a riot.
- ElGubrush, on 11/21/2008, -1/+16Why does it always have to be about race?
Can't we just riot for the sake of beating the ***** out of people? - jlimon, on 11/21/2008, -0/+15I have no idea why you're being dugg down, the correct spelling of the song is "Cum on feel the noize" - heh..
- sprooj, on 11/21/2008, -2/+15No one ever mentions the 1999 Seattle WTO riots...
- oboshoe, on 11/21/2008, -3/+13I think we dodged a big one on November 4th.
When I saw a million people pouring onto Obama Island in Chicago, I really felt a sense of dread if it turned out he lost.
They would have burned Chicago to the ground if he lost. - thugzilla, on 11/21/2008, -1/+11There were aerial fire bombings during the Tulsa Race Riots. Those bombings, Pearl Harbor, and 9/11 are the only aerial attacks on U.S. soil. The Greenwood district was somewhat of a mecca for music at the time, comparable to New Orleans. It was all but destroyed. Now all we got is ***** cover bands.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8more like a war ..
seriously.. trenches?! - firewire7, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8Let's just hope we don't see any economic riots.
- Somnabot, on 11/21/2008, -1/+8Dugg for 2005 Civil Unrest in France.
Those were great times. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -2/+8Oh Racism.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5In this case the list isn't actually in any particular order. Some of the riots in the middle of the list were much more violent and devastating than at the beginning or end.
- LucasG2, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5Seattle never gets any love.
Yet.. I still love Seattle. - oldcrows40, on 11/21/2008, -2/+7*Sings* April 26th 1992, There was a riot on the streets. Tell me where were you?
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6 Take out racial tensions and this is a very short list.
- decker12, on 11/21/2008, -2/+6My wife said that the first time we made love, it was a laugh riot.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -10/+14Wow @ "Louisville riots of 1968". Way to completely do the opposite of what King would've done. GG black folk.
- jaromir68, on 11/21/2008, -1/+5ATTICA!!! ATTICA!!! ATTICA!!
- mmittimm, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4You can crush us
You can bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh, Guns of Brixton
Fantastic foreshadowing. - Hellman109, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4Most riots are sparked by built up tension.
IE, police abuse of people, police not acting, racial tensions, etc.
Nearly all of them spurn from built up hatred of authority or race or religion that are sparked by one incident. - Poweroft, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4good article and all but what about Tiananmen Square?
- soupnrc, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3How about...
Bang your head! Metal health will drive ya mad! - Mujokan, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Interesting, but I don't know if the decline of Detroit was just down to the riots.
- dext3r, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Forgive my ignorance, but what the hell is 'Obama Island' and at what point were a million people located there?
(Grant Park == Obama Island?, 250,000 == 1,000,000?) - yacks, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3I was sitting at home on the computer with a 9600 baud modem connection to Prodigy in Ohio...
- WARonTREES, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3which is interesting when you think about it:
you're mad and so you destroy your own town...
people who want to riot should all hop on a bus and riot somewhere else. - ployd, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4France is so ***** racist
- sprooj, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2The movie is a great big pile of ***** that was shot in Vancouver BC, not really Seattle.
- justinsreality, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3I grew up in Tulsa, and the race riot from there is completely glazed over within the education system. It's hush-hush.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3No Attica prison riot? C'mon!
- Portagine, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2No you're right there are a number of contributing factors, some past, some pending. This was just one of many in a long steady decline.
- wakananda, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2There was no "rioting" in Seattle. I was there. In the first phase, masked "anarchists" (with police radios) set some fires and smashed a Starbucks. The police left them completely alone - made NO attempt to arrest them. They went right past them to the quietly marching hippie moms and dads and kids, and fired gas and rubber bullets at them point blank, drove their motorcycles over fallen victims, etc. THE POLICE rioted, and they used agents provocateurs (and some adolescent dupes) to justify their rampage. In the evening, and days following, there were small, sporadic acts of vandalism: outrage over what had initially occured. Many of the *peaceful protesters* are now collecting damages from a class action lawsuit against the city for their unlawful detention (in a concentration camp set up in advance for that purpose). What occured in Seattle was a disgusting, anti-american abuse of police powers that only underscores the need for us to reclaim our Republic from the internationalist forces that have corrupted it from within.
- CTK14A, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Umm... Newark '67?

- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -2/+4Eh the 1968 Louisville Riots were not that bad as 1968 riots in America went. For a good Louisville riot, see Bloody Monday, where a bunch of good old boys defended American liberty by... rioting and killing 22 immigrants so they couldn't vote in an election.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Monday - spepin, on 11/21/2008, -3/+5Come on feel the noise

- amanilaenvelope, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1I mean there's a fricken movie about it, jeez.
- gusza, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Interesting Article. But they missed some big riots. Especially ones in Asia, Africa and South America.
- WARonTREES, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1i don't know if that's technically a riot
