Terrorists May Tap Same Web 2.0 Tools as Military
sciam.com — The Congressional Research Service (CSR) recently released a report warning that enemies may be using the same Web-based, collaborative technology to prepare for future strikes that the U.S. uses to train soldiers and gather intelligence.

- pentupentropy, on 04/22/2008, -2/+11i don't know what to say but... duh. Anyone in a terrorist organization (or helping to run one) would hav eto be more savvy than the average joe. They've been using the net for years. I bet more terrorists know what 128 bit RFC is than do regular people. It's just logic.
- TalkingBadger, on 04/22/2008, -5/+3Sounds like you know a little bit too much about this terrorism thing.
They will be watching you.- xtraa, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4Sounds like you know a little bit too much about someone who knows a little bit too much about this terrorism thing.
They will be watchin you.

- sporg, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Terrorism fears are highly inflated and I'm more than a little sick of hearing about it. You have a better chance of winning the lottery while simultaneously being struck by lightning than being killed in a terrorist attack if you live outside the middle east. Please come up with a better excuse for keeping the warfare state rolling this one is getting stale.
- TalkingBadger, on 04/22/2008, -5/+3Sounds like you know a little bit too much about this terrorism thing.
- ampm2, on 04/22/2008, -2/+13soon they will buy their ammo on eBay....
- insanebrain, on 04/22/2008, -3/+1you forgot to add : . . o . . wait.
- tatercakes, on 04/22/2008, -6/+23Terrorists are going to use whatever's out there. Why don't we focus on making them not want to kill us?
- vexingmodstwo, on 04/22/2008, -9/+6Ummm... While there may be some terrorists who want us to "leave them alone", etc. the vast majority of them. the most militant of them, won't stop wanting to kill us until we all convert to their religion.
No, thanks.- Jlaugh, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2"won't stop wanting to kill us until we all convert to their religion" What nonsense stop watching Faux News. It's against Islamic law to convert by the sword, they only except volunteers.
- vexingmodstwo, on 04/22/2008, -2/+11) I don't watch Faux news. 2) I'm pretty sure it's against Islamic Law to fly an airplane filled with innocent people into a building filled with innocent people, but that didn't stop the MILITANTS I was referring to. You should learn how to read.
- danarama, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1conversion in islam is barley an issue, ever see a Muslim missionary?

- Bots, on 04/22/2008, -5/+5what are you talking about they will always hate us. they HATE the freedom we have and what we stand for!!!! THEY CAN'T STAND IT!!!
/sarcasm - hoffey, on 04/22/2008, -3/+3That would involve electing a president with a humble foreign policy, something the majority of Americans have no intention doing. Clinton, Obama, and McCain go around threatening other countries saying 'anything is on the table' so the stupid voters think their candidate is "tough enough" to run the USA.
- yojiffyskippy, on 04/22/2008, -5/+6Actually they hate the fact that you aren't a Muslim and will kill you because of it. So why don't you just convert (if you aren't already) and then you'll be safe. No worries mate.
- gobbleplex, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Oh wait, muslim terrorists attack other muslims more often than non-muslims. Better to just stay as you are and let them kill each other.
- vexingmodstwo, on 04/22/2008, -9/+6Ummm... While there may be some terrorists who want us to "leave them alone", etc. the vast majority of them. the most militant of them, won't stop wanting to kill us until we all convert to their religion.

- jerger23, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Given the right technology, yes caves could have high speed access.
But the terrorists in the caves are not the ones training for attacks...
- econoar, on 04/22/2008, -4/+7Don't dig me down terrorists!
- Bayan44, on 04/22/2008, -7/+7Oh my god nooo, not terrorist 2.0! Of course the Congressional Research Service who works exclusively and is funded by the US govnt is going to start telling us that the web can be used by terrorist. Scare the pawns, then the topic of net neutrality will have less credibility.
- captric, on 04/22/2008, -5/+5OH my God NOOO, its another Canadian Conspiracy Theorist! The big bad evil US government under the direction of Rogue government workers who do no answer to congress or the people have formed a massive conspiracy the likes of which the world has never seen and is out to conquer the world by enslaving their own people, initiating terrorist attacks against their own cities, faking moon landings from a Hollywood sound stage, and NOW acknowledging that wannabe terrorists may use our own technology against us. Sort of he way Canadians use our GPS system, freedom hard fought for, loose border enforcement to encourage trade, American built computers, American refined Gasoline, American extracted tar sands, American electricity distribution technology, American built large aircraft, American Avionics, American Space Shuttle for their space programs, American Satellite Communications, American Weather Satellites , American military technology, etc, etc, etc, etc.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 04/22/2008, -2/+1Yeah but we buy their lumber and Tim Horton's coffee, so I guess we're even eh?
- banderwocky, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2The vast majority of your verbal diarrhea you spouted there is technology bought from Japan or China. I think that's you major malfunction. Visions of grandeur that create a self imposed pedestal. While America, historically has contributed much to the world in all aspects, so has many other countries. Everything you mentioned has in part or entirely started or been supplied at some point technology, manpower, knowledge or funding from other countries. I will give you entire credit for the Iraq invasion debacle however. Vietnam too. That's all America.
- captric, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1That is entirely laughable, the Chinese are HERE stealing our technology not the other way around. The Chinese have not been known for technology since the invention of GUNPOWDER which h is now obsolete. You don't see Americans forcing Chinese aircraft to land, capturing their crews, and dismantling their aircraft to get the technology. Same is true of Japan. Is a well disciplined manufacturing country... the technology came from the US. The Japanese are experts at IMPROVING existing technology. Ever been to China or Japan? I have been to both. But more importantly I live in Canada who obtains ALL of their technology form the US and have marginally been able to manufacture some. Such as small airplanes, Air Canada Flies Boeing and Airbus aircraft. Canada fighter aircraft are FA-18's manufactured in St Louis Missouri. Canada's medical schools are the equivalent of Caribbean Medical Schools. Nurses come to the US for their training because of the exposure to medical technology rarely ween in Canada. Oil drilling technology comes from the US and you gasoline is refined here because you do not have the production capacity. The Iraq war is supported by 65 other countries but of course not Canada, who were originally settled by the cowards from America who fled the revolutionary war, Your freedom comes from America winning of the Revolutionary war and the War of 1812 when the Americans beat the British for the second time and drove them from the continent. It is no wonder Canadians are so illiterate when only two of your universities rank in the top 100 best schools in the world while almost half of the world class universities are in the US. You are DEPENDENT on the US for everything you have or will ever have. We politely laugh at your claim to be a sovereign nation and you do exactly what you are told to do usually with a few exceptions. We don't need Canadian help in Iraq - if you want to further tarnish your reputation by displaying your true colors (yellow ) to the rest of the world most of whom have warrior sub cultures and have had to pay the price for their freedom in blood. Canada is a Small meaningless country full of artist, cooks, waiters, homosexuals and druggies. You health care is second rate, your children have bad teeth and poor schools and your violent crime rate is increasing at the same time Americas in increasing. So go ahead and make a fool out of yourself and use your "right to free speech" borrowed from and payed for by Brave and Industrious Americans. Every once in a while we might actually allow one of your Astronauts to ride on our Space Shuttle. Then again, only once!! Why dont stop getting your news from the gay magazine Georgia Stright and Michael Moore Propoganda Films and read the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Barrons, and watch CNN, CNNHN, FOX, ABC, CBS and NBC. Oh and by the way - you actually wona hockey game - its time to trash Monteal and burn it to the ground in celebration!!! Congratulations CANADA!
- banderwocky, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1What IS laughable is your ridiculous suggestion that all technology from China stems from a single captured American fighter plane. Is that how we got the VCR or Sony, Toshiba or the hundreds of other tech companies you take forgranted? Maybe all Chinese cars are the result of that American fighter plane!
You once again fail to see past your own imaginary world to recognize contributions from other countries around the world. I would not be surprise if you threw in the invention of the wheel and fire as an American invention!
Due to geographic issues, Canada and the US have really little to no choice but to co-exist. Our multibillion dollar daily border on a daily basis helps both of our economies. We could say we both don't NEED it, but that goes against making economic sense doesn't it, as a lot of money is made.
Looks like Jean Chretien made the correct choice by not going on the war wagon with America and its coalition doesn’t it? But like you said, you don’t need us there. We are busy looking for Osama in Afghanistan right now, while America is fighting its occupation war. Sorry, but we are busy! I really don’t think it’s OUR reputation we have to worry about, especially when Americans dawn the Canadian flag on their luggage when they go abroad so that people are friendlier to them.
Our health care system is place above the American one according to the World Health Organization. Even though Canada scored a 30 (US scored 37), we definitely can do better, and probably will. Same with our education system according to the latest PISA study. Our system seems to be proving , consistently across the board, to better than most, worse than some, but better than our Southern neighbors.
Canada was not settled by Cowardly Americans fleeing the Revolutionary war. Jebus you need to read a damn book and stop watching FOX news. I suppose you don’t read much history.
Our national crime rate is FAR lower than that compared to our southern Friends according to the 2007 Crime & Safety report. So…I guess you’re just un-informed.
My right to free speech is guaranteed in Canadian laws, not American. Which by the way is “borrowed” from 399BC Socrates apparently.
Are you SERIOUSLY going to open up a can of worms on RIOTS?!?! How about LA? How about all the Race throughout Americas history! Don’t get all ***** cause Boston lost!
So over all, good job on making a whole bunch of crap up? - captric, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1Another illiterate rant form an uneducated and ill informed Canadian believing his own countries propoganda ina weak attempt to make themselves appear equal to Americans. You are not nor ever will be the equal of Americans. You live in a weak and ineffective country and you are nothing but jealous of America and Americans wealth, power, authority and respect in the world. If you think Americans need to put Canadian flags on their luggage in order to be treated better than you have NEVER traveled. Your country and your people are week and that is recognized worldwide. The only people who respect Canada and Canadians are hippies and pot smokers and gays.Jean Chretien made a terrible mistake not supporting the US in the war in Iraq and you will be paying for that for a very long time. Write me back when the terrorists you coddle in your country set off a nuke in downtown Toronto or Vancouver, then who are you going to call to punish the bad guys? The Canadian armed forces who are fewer than the NYC police Department????? I would suggest you stop reading your own selfish and ill informed propoganda and do some scientific research. I doubt you are capable.
- captric, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Here you go you ***** Cnucklehead! Read a reliable and world renound journalistic newspaper for a change! Jean Chretian is a French fag and an embarrasemebt to North America! http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120787343563306609 ...
- banderwocky, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Look at your elitist bigotted statements! Not equal to Americans. Are not all men created equal in the American constitution? It doesn't say, Only Americna Men are created equal. It's nice to see you don't even believe in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. Your patriotism is to what? Cowardness, fear and hate. Those are your allegiences.
Our economy is stronger as the American dollar slides, our healthcare system continue to improve, our education system is top notch what more could a person ask for? I don't think we want world power, or authority but we have earned respect. The several times I have travelled around the world, through Europe, the Middle East and Asia, there are DEFINETLY American tourists with Canadian Flags on their backpacks and lugage. I've partyed with them. I understand as they don't want to be targeted by the evil doers. You're just lying to yourself to say otherwise or are speaking from inexperience. Like I said, we have troops in Afghanistan looking for Osama for our Amerian friends. Someone has to do it I guess. But Chretien was right in his choice for Canada. It may not be what Americans want, but what they want is totally irrelevant as to our nations best interests. It is in OUR best interest. You know, what leaders are supposed to do.
Now you're just spouting hate and foolishiness. I kinda feel sorry for you. Sorta. Naaah not really! - captric, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1You know nothing of the American constitution you Canadian moron. You are self delusional, your health care system is a joke, Canadians come to the US in droves to get proper treatment for themselves and especially their children. Dental care is almost non- existent and there are otherwise beautiful young girls running around with terrible teeth. You economy is not stronger and that has nothing to do with the TEMPORARY comparison of the US dollar to the Loony.Your education system is a joke with only two of your universities and about 22 America universities are on the top 100 in the world list. Canadians who can afford it send their kids abroad for an education post high school. You partied with a bunch a druggies who are as ignorant as you when it comes to life experience and knowledge of geopolitics. Americans are respected world wide. Absolutely everyone in the world knows where NYC and LA are but try to get someone from Spain or Italy to or South America to name a city in Canada. In addition, just like Canadians, they LOVE our Internet services, GPS navigation, etc., etc. None of those gifts to the world come from Canada moron. Don't feel sorry for me you foolish little Canadian illiterati, I have more than you can hope for because I am an American living in the greatest and most productive country and economy on the face of the earth and you are a poor undereducated and under traveled Canadian living in a second world country with no hope of a future.
- banderwocky, on 04/23/2008, -1/+1And you know NOTHING about the world you live in, or the country you live in. You might as well return to the rock you're hiding under with the othervenomous slim you circle jerk with. Your view global politics is myopic, pathetic and embarrasaing. You just show how hateful and weak minded you are over and over. You can scream till you're blue in the face, it will not change the situation the US is currently stewing in. Sad, and pathetic. :)
- captric, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1Typical Canadian coward - you can dish out the criticism but you cant take it can you. The country I live in is just fine, you are watching WAY too much television. The US just prevented the Chinese from off loading an arms shipment for terrorists in Zimbabwe, were was Canada? The US just stepped up their anti pirate patrols in Indonesia, where is the canadian navy? The French are there! The US is negotiating peace in the middle east and protecting Israel according to UN charter. Where is Canada? An ex US President Jimmy Carter is talking to Hamas to negotiate peace, where are the ex PM's from Canada. You have no idea, because of your lack of education, reading and travel, that your country is side show at best on the world scene. The Scots disrespect you, the Irish disrespect you and more importantly - Americans disrespect you. While America and Americans are changing the world to make it safer and more economically viable, canadians bury their collective heads in the sand and hope for the best! Whats a matter banderwockey? You having a little trouble debating well educated and insightful Canadian Americans who lives in BOTH countries??
- banderwocky, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1Considering I live in both countries as well, I do know where the Canadian Armed forces are residing! In part, with partnership to the UN, we are in Afghanistan for one. You already know what they are doing there. I also know what American soldiers are doing in Iraq. You're an amusing backwater educated sycophant to the American propaganda and Military Industrial complex which is becoming a very precarious position to take. The PM of Canada, while I don't agree with some of his policies, is busy looking our for our best interests. Of course, if you don't like it, why not get the hell out of my country? I'm pretty sure you won't be missed! Europe disrespects Canadians? What a glorious misguided imagination you have. Of all the traveling I do there, you would suggest they are incredibly cowardly and two faced to tell me that to my face, or they are just blatantly lying when conversations start off with "WTF are the Americans doing now? Bloody idiots...". In your imaginary world that is how it goes, eh? Your sad and pathetic "argument" , well it's not even that, more like made up blanket statements directed at anyone who disagrees with you is not even humors. It's flat out embarrassing. Keep on blowing steam blow hard! It's cute you are trying to "argue". :)

- Anonchrist, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1Americans do not conspire, we are just normally motivated by personal outside factors and group up with anyone to accomplish that goal. It is not that unreasonable to assume the entire war is based on the president rallying behind what would turn out to be bad information (without caring about its legitimacy) simply to do what he believed was in his best interest and the best interest of his vision of America.
Even so, this doesn't look like it has anything to do with net neutrality. He probably intends to "govern" the internet and use it to mold the world to his vision. Propaganda works better than war.- o0JoeCool0o, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2lol stop talking your ignorance is showing. - chicofaraby, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4Oh yeah, I forgot to be afraid of terrorists there for a minute. Thanks for the reminder that scary brown people hate my freedom.
yawn - neozeed, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2How is this a surprise, they get the same funding too. Oh what's that you didn't know the terrorists are the government.
- Anonchrist, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3If we give away our freedoms away at the asking, why would we die to protect them? If we are to fight a war against our liberties being taken and the innocent being tortured and slain then we must fight it with words against everyone with a weapon; Neocon and Jihadist alike.
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -Benjamin Franklin- neozeed, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3It makes you wonder if anyone is stupid enough to buy this pentagon spam. Or how is it possible that congress has a 11-20% approval rating, and all the MSM approved candidates are senators.......

- pilobilus, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Cyberterrorist - n. A person who uses networked communications, especially tools provided by Internet technology, for political activism not funded or supported by major corporations. adv. - Electronic network or activities which enable or promote the spread of factual information that is deemed harmful to the financial or political interests of major corporations.
- Zarianne, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1How naive are those who expected terrorists to stick with outdated means of communication when 'we' were taking advantage of all the wondrous new ways (and speeds!) of communication? That's the backlash of technical advancement: our world has become too small to 'hide' those advancements from people we'd rather not want them to use. Besides, terrorists probably won't consider themselves the bad guys, just as 'we' don't.
(NOTE: with the danger of being too obvious, I do want to point out that NO, I do NOT consider terrorists the 'good guys'; it is just important to consider that 'good' and 'bad' are normative descriptions, which are never based on facts but on values behind, and perceptions of facts. In the end all the arguments for why we are the 'good' and they are the 'bad' guys boil down to "because we feel/believe we/they are". Because we follow the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights? Well, 'we' wrote it and we're not even living by it (our governments certainly aren't). So it's hardly surprising others don't consider that declaration very valuable.)
(NOTE2: You just can't be too careful, you know... YES I do consider human rights extremely important and I do think the world would be a better place if all had access to and protection of those rights, but that's the whole point: It's my opinion, my believe. Really, we're not even halfway to reaching consensus over even the most 'basic' of human rights.
I'm not pessimistic, you know: I study the stuff because it intrigues me and I believe many things can/will work it tried differently. You just have to understand the situation at hand before you'll ever be able to realize any progress) - xtraa, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4THERE IS NO TERRORISM.
Don't believe the hype. It's all in your mind.- solid12345, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1So who hijacked a school and killed 200 kids at Beslan, the boogie man?
- coolcut, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1How can one write such garbage and put their name on it? No wonder the US is losing their war OF terror. With focus on stupid stuff like this, it's no wonder the war of terror is failing so poorly. What is next? Terrorists drink same water as US marines? Terrorists found to be breathing the same air as regular citizens. Garbage!!! If this is what lawmakers are doing with their time, it's no wonder the US justice system is the laughing stock of the planet......and to actually report this...nice way to remove any dignity from your writing credentials.
- neozeed, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1lol it's funny someone dugg you down, probably the pentagon shill that wrote the peice...!
- danarama, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1more like military using web 2.0 tools to pretend to be terrorists
- unfairunbalance, on 04/22/2008, -1/+3Meanwhile a Palestinian Activist was found bound and gagged in an Austin Texas lake. Local police declared suicide. I think it was the Feds CIA and Israeli Mosad with police who murdered Riadh Hamad.

U.S. trained Osama Bin Laden aka CIA Operative Tim Osman. G.W.Bush's business partner Salem Bin Laden's brother. 9-11 orchestrated by criminal elements within our Government. The White House and the Pentagon is Al-Qaida. - solid12345, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2America is becoming pathetic, if this were Russia we'd be sending in the Spetsnaz and cutting off the genitals of Jihadist rebels and mailing them back to their wives rather than cowering in Congress thinking of absurd and over the top ways of how they are going to take us out first.
- sean74, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1In other news, terrorists have now figured out how to schedule Tivo recordings online.
- jprdd, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1I feel bad for anyone trying to actually accomplish anything other than wasting time or consuming products with anything web 2.0... It's just information overload, nicely organized.
- HairyPoter, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1Let see if I got it right. The guys they call "terrorists", that guys with towels in their heads who wipe their asses with the left hand and clean the hand in sand boxes are, in fact ultra geek guys, the towels, camels and sand boxes are just a disguise. In fact, that blade-runner-guys are from a society much more advanced than ours and they are operating in 23rd century installations underground on mars – and that's why nobody can find Bin Laden on Earth – and from there they are planning and executing sophisticated cyber attacks to stop all torrents and porn traffic in the internet, specially in the USA. Beware guys, we will lose the porn soon. I don't know who is the most idiot. The delusional guys planting and inventing those ***** stories or those who publish and listen to them.
