- cpsteinmetz, on 04/05/2008, -0/+2Apparently you have never been a teacher. The idea - especially in an advanced class - is to state opinions contrary to the students' beliefs, and inspire them to present support for their beliefs. In this case, he obviously also wants students to learn about spurious interpretations, evidence, etc.
This was an "advanced" class, and the kid was an honor student - so the approach is legitimate. It seem as though the child was too immature and/or too far gone in his Christian indoctrination to think. - inactive, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2I bet he still likes his Christmas break.
- millerftw, on 04/03/2008, -2/+3it's not like he lied.
- cpsteinmetz, on 04/04/2008, -1/+2No kidding. Do you maybe suppose that was the teacher's purpose in his advanced placement class? Do you think his purpose was to get the students to come to that conclusion? Do ya?
- cpsteinmetz, on 04/04/2008, -2/+3The one extremely obvious fact here is that the student was not mature enough as a sophomore honors student to be taking Advanced Placement European History class. [Note how Fox News neglects to mention these things. What did you expect, but that?]
Why obvious? The student was "insulted" by the teacher's comments. In fact, “It was very hard for me because it’s like basically telling me all this stuff that I’ve believed my whole entire life — it’s just basically trying to throw it out the window,” said the student. Oh heavens, an advanced placement teacher trying to get a child to open his mind, examine other perspectives, not trust everything he has been taught. Surely this teacher should get everything coming to him - like an award. - middlemind, on 04/02/2008, -5/+6The guy is a teacher..he is supposed to inspire kids to think. This is not a country where anyone is obligated to be blindly obedient. So what if he challenegd the kids beliefs? If his beliefs are strong then they should bear a challenge. Fired? The teacher should be given an award.
- gmarie624, on 04/02/2008, -4/+5Okay, here's a simple test for those who are praising this teacher. Just substitute the word "gay" or "Muslim" or whatever word you want in place of "Jesus" (as in Jesus glasses and all the other idiotic comments he made) and then tell me he should be given an award.
- ncsumetalhead, on 04/02/2008, -3/+3yes, thank you. We tell our children what to believe...why not give options, EDUCATE them and let them choose. If he's teaching a higher level course, the kid should expect someone to challenge their views so that they must defend them.
This kid will have a lot of problems when he gets to college. - justshapes, on 04/03/2008, -3/+3Oct 12th 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger passed AB 394 & SB 777, I'm not surprised CA has any specific non-discrimination laws for religion and biased lessons about any subject. Seems like teachers are getting beat at both ends of the stick, with No Child Left Behind they have to make sure students pass tests, but to teach they get sued when they mention anything of their own opinion. I think we should just video tape what the Government thinks is okay to learn and what activists want mentioned on particular subjects, then stick it on uTube and get rid of schools altogether…oh wait, that would be brainwashing…go figure. No one will win this argument because of the 1st Amendment (And I’ve been watching HBO John Adams, so I know what I’m talking about).
- redeemed, on 04/03/2008, -3/+3Another Test:
“What part of the country has the highest murder rate? The South! What part of the country has the highest rape rate? The South! What part of the country has the highest black population? The South!
We would be justifiably screaming our head off. - ohpiddle, on 04/03/2008, -2/+2Teachers are to get the students to think for themselves they are not their to voice their opinions. Brain washing is not the way to teach.
- sploozo, on 04/03/2008, -2/+2I'm not sure the teacher should be fired, and the lawsuit is certainly ridiculous, but I agree his comments are offensive and the logic severely flawed.
Hi rape and murder in the south? Perhaps that is what drives people to the church.
Besides christians, there are lots of blacks, latinos, rednecks, and apparantly morons too. So yeah his logic is dumb but I don't think he should be sued / fired. - purag66, on 05/13/2009, -2/+2Buried for Fox News.
- markgl, on 04/03/2008, -2/+2inspire to think? think what, that religion is the cuase of all that? i don't thinks so my friend.
- cobbwobbles, on 04/03/2008, -3/+3buried because drama queen jesus freaks have ruled the western world for almost two millenia
- dan222555, on 04/03/2008, -3/+2The teacher's "argument" is a complete logical fallacy. It's post hoc, he's implying a cause and effect relationship when there is no evidence to suggest one exists. And he's doing so in order to denigrate Christianity.
- bigot, on 04/03/2008, -6/+5If this "teacher" had said the same thing about that pedophile Mohammad he would have been gone by that afternoon.
- martscan, on 04/03/2008, -4/+3gmarie624: Is "gay" a religion" Is "Muslim" the predominate religion in the Southern U.S.? Are the statistics cited by the teacher correct, or incorrect? Why don't you offer an explanation to the teacher's questions rather than posing stupid, 'simple' questions? Because YOU are simple.
- gmarie624, on 04/03/2008, -2/+1Why so bitter, martscan?
- inactive, on 04/02/2008, -9/+7He needs to be fired.
- darnedsocks, on 04/03/2008, -6/+4THIS A$$HOLE SHOULD BE FIRED! What he said it totally inappropriate for someone in a leadership position over children under 18.
- markgl, on 04/03/2008, -3/+1he hates christians, and he lets it be know to children.
- jimbowright, on 04/03/2008, -4/+1Sounds like the teacher may have to deal with hate crime charges. Thanks to recent Hate Crime Initiatives, if one of his students harm a Christian, this teacher can be charged with instigating the criminal act. He better hope nobody in his class harms this young Christian.
- obliviousfool, on 04/03/2008, -6/+3It sounds like someone's precious snowflake was harmed. I hope some paramedics were close by.
- martscan, on 04/03/2008, -9/+3The kid should be expelled and his stupid family should understand what 'academic freedom' means. Their kid will grow up being as narrow minded and biased as his stupid parents. Three cheers for a brilliant teacher that knows what he is doing.
