- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -6/+101From the comment section over at Reddit, where I assume msaleem got this submission (and submission title) from, ksa11 writes:
"I'm Saudi and i'd like to ask you guys if you've even looked into this? The bombing thing is *****, He beat a 19 year old syrian man to death in 2007.. and thats why he was sentenced to die. Muhammad is a SAUDI, not a canadian, but was born in canada, so he wanted to use that as an advantage. He deserves to die for beating the poor guy to death, but apparently, because of you guys, he wont die, no, that murderer will get another chance. http://www.cjad.com/news/565/951604%22 " - mikemehak, on 06/30/2009, -6/+96He killed someone in a drunken brawl and wants Canada to save him because he lived here briefly and managed to get citizenship. His family clearly has money but can't buy their way out of this, so they are trying political pull.
I don't believe in the death penalty, purely because
a) it's the easy way out for the person who committed a vicious crime
b) too many people are innocent or wrongfully accused but can't afford proper attorney. (like it or not, Public Defendants get the same amount win or lose)
But when I'm visiting or working in a country that has strict laws, I'm extra careful to not even jay walk.
This guy dug his own grave, and he wasn't even at gun point. - jcsoc, on 06/30/2009, -1/+67That article was written in an incredibly confusing way.
- platypusREX, on 06/30/2009, -11/+72Dont kill people and you wont have to die for it.
- volt1234, on 06/30/2009, -4/+55Why's he in Saudi Arabia?
- TobiasParker, on 06/30/2009, -4/+43To beat some guy to death. Duh.
- Afrochu, on 06/30/2009, -3/+39No. ***** him. A Canadian passport is not a get out of jail free card for a faux Canadian who chose to live in Saudi Arabia for almost a decade. He got involved in a drunken brawl and beat a guy to death. Self defense my ass, it's not that hard to walk away from drunken people, ESPECIALLY in a country where drinking is illegal. When you factor in that this guy was mostly likely involved with terrorist bombings, it paints a clear picture that this guy just LOOKS for trouble. What happens in Saudi Arabia stays in Saudi Arabia, don't waste my tax dollars on this piece of *****.
- cosworth99, on 06/30/2009, -3/+30As a Canadian who has lived overseas and seriously minded my Ps and Qs while away, I'm on the fence on this one. CDN passports are not get out of jail free cards. You were convicted of a crime. Unless you can demonstrably prove there has been injustice, you are literally on your own.
CDN citizenship is not to be taken lightly. - israfil334, on 06/30/2009, -0/+26What jak is saying is true. I've spent 19 years in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, pretty much grew up there.
My friends and I have been caught by the Mutawa's (Islamic Police) twice because we were outside a Pool place waiting for it to open (Everything closes for 5 mins during prayer times as to encourage ppl to pray or something), and the Mutawas practically raided the place and threw us in the back of their car. On the way to there station I saw them brutally beat the living crap out of innocent ppl (specifically only ppl from 3rd world countries whos governments wont ever defend them). I saw this one mutawa, ask a guy if he prayed and he said yes, he called him a liar and started beating him with his sandal. My friends and I obviously co-operated very very well :)
Anyways they dragged us 2 hours out of the city and we had to WALK back.
2nd time:
My friend and I were in his car, didnt realise that prayer time wasnt over and outta no-where the door opens and we're being taken into a car and forced to pray...
(which btw is not permitted in Islam)
As a muslim I have this to say: I have no idea what kind of Islam these guys are following. Islam means peace in arabic and theres nothing Islamic about the way these ppl are following the religion.
Not to mention the amount of racism you get to experience there if you're from a 3rd world country.
Honestly I've experienced racism both here in the US and in Saudi Arabia. Here I had to deal with 2 racist professors in school which shocked me. And by racist i mean comments like "oh what do they eat there? little christians and hindus".
But I don't belong here nor do I intend to live here so I ignored it. But when saudi's claim to be muslims, they should act like muslims not like the way they act now. I didn't expect to be treated like a piece of ***** by my own "brothers".
Don't get me wrong, there are a few saudi's who are the most amazing ppl ive met. very well educated, very open to critisim and have really big hearts. but they're a minority.
In conclusion I'm glad I got the ***** outta there :) - Rain12913, on 06/30/2009, -4/+25I was originally planning to come here and say "So what was he doing bombing ***** in Saudi Arabia?", but after reading the other comments it seems "So what was he doing killing people in Saudi Arabia?" would be more appropriate. I'm against the death penalty regardless of how it is physically carried out, but it doesn't look like this man is innocent. The article (and submission title) make it seem like he's some kind of innocent political prisoner who's going to be murdered, but that doesn't appear to be the case. If he is indeed guilty, than he's just one of the many people in the world who will be put to death for their crimes, including many in the USA.
- adorkable81, on 06/30/2009, -1/+22What? I read the article twice and still don't know who is who. I feel so dumb
- rheaume, on 06/30/2009, -5/+24He spent a quarter of his life in Canada, hes not Canadian enough for me to care what he does in some ***** country, he should have known better, even I would.
- Aroundtown27, on 06/30/2009, -1/+19This guy doesn't quite know what he is talking about. First, his name isn't Muhammad, it's Mohamed and he was born in Saudi Arabia, not Canada. His family moved to Montreal for 6 years when he was younger and was granted citizenship. He then returned to Saudi Arabia and got into a brawl and was accused of murdering someone.
Amnesty International (http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/MDE23/037/ ... has raised issues with the case for several reasons, namely that Muhammad was beaten in an attempt to make him confess. Furthermore, there were some highly suspicious issues with the trial.
Do a little research Reddit guy (and plimpton for that matter) - DeusGear, on 06/30/2009, -1/+19There are not enough details for me to come to any conclusions about the case. Terribly written article.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+17See, that's why you shouldn't go to *****-up countries and do stupid *****. It's like idiots who try to smuggle drugs back to the US from crazy countries in South America. They get busted at the airport and all of a sudden the world is supposed to care about their case. ***** 'em. Don't Go To *****-Up Countries And Do Stupid *****. Saudis have a hard-on for lopping off peoples' heads. So don't go there. And if you absolutely Have to go there, then don't act like an idiot. Unfortunately for this guy, in order to learn his lesson, he will have to have his head separated from his body. But I bet he will never do stupid ***** there, or anywhere, again. Lesson learned, albeit, the hard way.
- cerejota, on 06/30/2009, -1/+17I disagree with the entire basis of the legal system in Saudi Arabia, including the death penalty. However, this is a cry baby *****, who did the crime, and now doesnt want to do the time. While one might disagree with a legal system, one most remember that one's individual consent is not required.
So if he was tried under Saudi law, found guilty, then let him face his sentence. The only way I would change opinion is if he was framed or being made a patsy. Otherwise, he should have thought twice. - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -26/+41Capital punishment is sick no matter what the circumstance.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -4/+17It's too bad he didn't do a little research into Saudi Arabia before he visited. If he had, he'd be too scared to pee standing up, let alone become involved in an altercation.
- jak2600, on 06/30/2009, -2/+14I don't know for sure if this guy killed a man or not. But the writter of this comment points out a perfect example of the double (triple...) standard in Saudi Arabian judicial system. For practical purposes they determine nationality not by passaport you hold but where you were born, religion etc. They are much harder on Muslims and the people of the Arab world. Having been employed in KSA for ten years and managing over 100 foreign workers I am well qualified to make this statement.
- Aroundtown27, on 06/30/2009, -0/+12Look at the Amnesty report on this and see if you feel the same way.
http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/MDE23/037/ ... - vault, on 06/30/2009, -0/+11The Saudi government didn't even allow the lawyer to dispute the evidence. And ksa11 is also wrong because he wasn't born in Canada, despite being a Canadian citizen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamed_Kohail
- nostraboris, on 06/30/2009, -4/+15you beat a guy to death, and you get beheaded, pretty cool!
- Shawkab, on 06/30/2009, -1/+12He killed someone..
It takes a lot to beat the ***** out of someone to death, he knew what he was doing. If he was in Canada he would get Jail for life. - gantz9x, on 06/30/2009, -0/+10No offense but , why the hell would you go there and get into a drunken brawl? I don't see how hes gonna pull out of this one.
- nostraboris, on 06/30/2009, -0/+10can't we behead spammer scum like this?
- studdenfadden, on 06/30/2009, -4/+14@bobbknight,
capital punish is a very effective deterrent, that's why America has a much lower murder rate than Canada, Australia, or any country in Europe!
/s - dman24752, on 06/30/2009, -0/+10Beheading is as humane as any modern method of execution if carried out correctly and a single blow is sufficient to decapitate the prisoner. Consciousness is probably lost within 2-3 seconds, due to a rapid fall of the “intracranial perfusion of blood" (blood supply to the brain). The person dies from shock and anoxia due to haemorrhage and loss of blood pressure within less than 60 seconds. However, because the muscles and vertebrae of the neck are tough, decapitation may require more than one blow. Death occurs due to separation of the brain and spinal cord, after the transection (cutting through) of the surrounding tissues, together with massive haemorrhage.
It has often been reported that the eyes and mouths of the decapitated have shown signs of movement. It has been calculated that the human brain has enough oxygen stored for metabolism to persist for about 7 seconds after the head is cut off.
Source: http://www.capitalpunishmentuk.org/behead.html - hpodity, on 06/30/2009, -9/+18agreed, it doesn't work and it's barbaric, we've progressed beyond that as a society.
- cosworth99, on 06/30/2009, -1/+10"so what exactly is the threshold at which the government should take care of it's people?"
All bets are off once you kill someone. - shagg187, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9Misleading description is misleading.
- Aroundtown27, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9Did you miss the part where they held him for a month and half and tried to beat a confession out of him? He wasn't visiting there, he was living there.
And to readily admit that their legal system is flawed and then simply state that he shouldn't have been there and thus doesn't deserve any help is quite disturbing. - medfreak, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9If he was in Texas, he'd be electrocuted and called a Terrrrist in the process. No one would have flinched.
- idontlikeyou2, on 06/30/2009, -1/+9Beheading is no more cruel than other forms of capital punishment. There is no such thing as quick and painless execution methods, not even lethal injection.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+9FTA: "Both brothers have claimed their innocence." Oh, well, they claim INNOCENCE. Clearly, they would never lie about something like that. I'm not going to debate the Death Penalty, because nobody on either side of that particular debate is ever going to change their mind. I will say, however, that this case seems pretty cut and dried- he committed the crime, he had a trial, and now he's facing the legal penalty for his crime. Seems to me that if I lived in Saudi Arabia, I'd go out of my way to never commit a crime.
- LiLBiGD1Ck, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7He killed someone...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bali_Nine
These guys attempted to smuggle heroin out of indonesia and into Australia. Three of them will be executed and the rest will get 20+ years in prison. - twisterrust, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7same here man.. I am lost too
- ZombieSociety, on 06/30/2009, -1/+7Listen to Mr. College Words.
- Toshibi, on 06/30/2009, -3/+9bobbknight, but what about us, as a free people, with a government of the people, making a mistake? Do we all then deserve to die? We would never be able to kill again.
- dinuguan, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6Saudies are so easy to beat to death.
- ATL, on 06/30/2009, -5/+10***** that part of the world. Just don't go there.
- Desmundo108, on 06/30/2009, -7/+12I would digg if it were beheading by lightsaber.
- smacksaw, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5This reminds me of when Israel starting bombing the ***** out of Lebanon, and all of a sudden these "Canadians" were asking to be rescued.
My path to Canadian citizenship is almost over. And it's been a long one. I resent these people who have questionable ties to Canada trying to reap the benefits that their citizenship afford them without actually behaving positively AS a citizen of Canada.
Anyway, I think it's typical of Harper's gov't to drop the ball on this. The only thing worse than this guy abusing the system is the gov't failing to do their part in the system.
Why can't we make a deal where he renounces his Canadian citizenship if we bail him out? This guy is trouble. He's using Canada as a safety net. Maybe if he had to be bound by Saudi rules, he'd watch himself next time he's getting into trouble. - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5I have to agree with you even though I disagree with capital punishment. If we as Canadians go around trying to throw our weight around with every case just because they're Canadian (even when they are guilty), what happens when there is a case where we really should be intervening? We should reserve our international political capital for the important cases.
- sd12013, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5"...namely that Muhammad was beaten..."
Wait... I thought you said his name wasn't Muhammad. - sharkydog, on 06/30/2009, -7/+12Yeah, but you know who else always says they're innocent? The innocent. Don't get me wrong here, I'm no bleeding heart liberal... If this guy IS guilty, well then he should have thought twice before committing a crime in Saudi Arabia. BOOM... Headshot. But when I see such disparity between criminal sentences, especially when two defendants are involved in the same incident, I tend to think something's rotten in Denmark.
- compgeek, on 06/30/2009, -2/+7Buried as *****. So what he has a Canadian passport big whoopee. He wasn't born here and it shouldn't save him if he did something stupid. If he had simply beat the snot out of the guy and then it was a death sentence I'd be appauled as it's more force than the crime. For crying out loud he beat the guy to death so the death penalty much as I am opposed does seem fitting
- mercurysquad, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Are you guys ***** retarded? The bombing guy is DIFFERENT from the guy this article is about. This article's description was bad enough, and then you get people with the reading comprehension of a drunken raccoon thinking WILLIAM SAMPSON and MOHAMED KOHAIL are the same person, even when the article begins with:
"I am currently spending more time in jail than William Sampson although my case does not have any political implications," Kohail wrote. - smacksaw, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Just tell him to sit on his hand for 5 minutes.
Then...umm...listen to The Cure? - deslock, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Hello, I am related to a Nigerian Princess and I am falsely accused in Saudi Arabia for protecting her and will be executed.
I will send you the reward money for saving the Princess Nala in the sum of 200,000 to be sent directly to your bank account.
But first, I need only 10,000 to pay for a lawyer and free myself and the princess... - IronDuke83, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4also: BADLY
