- mhuggins, on 10/12/2007, -3/+68Guys, stop publishing your HTML files. I told you it could only lead to trouble!!
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+56I seriously doubt anything like this would ever happen... "shutting off" the internet would cause the economy to crumble.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50But if the RIAA shut down the internet, who would they sue?
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+47Mussoluni once said Fascism should be called Corporatism.
- trenchMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -12/+49Canada is connected to the Internet?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36Just for the record: Corporatism is not capitalism.
- MercedRocks, on 10/12/2007, -14/+41Its not fascism it's called coporate greed run amok.
- kashi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30that's why the US should lose control over the internet.. so, courts don't have some stupid idea because they think they can or all the monopolists for that matter
- DoctaStooge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25I guess the crazy lawyer was right.
http://digg.com/tech_news/RIAA_think_they_ve_the_power_to_switch_off_the_Internet
Granted, this probably won't happen, but he was still sort of right. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26"Canada is connected to the Internet?"
yeah, but we gotta take our dogsleds to the Internet Cafe Igloo. The polar bear boot rug is always wet though, and when everyone farts it reeks of dead seal. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+31They have a dial-up connection up there which they all have to share.
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -2/+21...they could sue the goverment for the ruling. the ruling "unfairly forced them to close their doors"
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Big corps strike again.. :/
All I've got to say is all info should be free.. :P
Anyways the supreme court first ruled that sharing without paying was ok (vhs tapes)... Than the corps got into the pockets of the judges and ruin it for the rest of us...
Yes I do think you should buy the cd or movie or whatever... But they are being fatalists, just cause they made 10 mil instead of 15 mil... - Fhwqhgads, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20In other news:
the Hell City Council has recently approved the purchase of a fleet of snowplows and salt machines. - golhra, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20You can't just "stop" the internet, that's ridiculous.
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18no its not. they can't even do anything, do you have any idea who makes money from the internet? every OTHER big corporation. sure the RIAA is big... but i know some companies that are as big (or bigger) who could make the RIAA go back in their hole and never come back out if they felt they were a threat.
they control some of the money in the world... but not all. - Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16It is definitely corporate greed...they make the money, the artist live out of cardboard boxes...
- trenchMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16This is almost a real story.... almost.
- jstevewhite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Obviously lots of people didn't read TFA. From TFA: "Deep sixing the entire Internet seems a highly unlikely move in that it would probably derail the world economy and put thousands of huge transnational corporations out of business." Second, the only quotes here are that making COPYRIGHTED works available on the internet should be considered infringement in and of itself. Without commenting on my opinion of that idiocy, I would suggest that this would not affect the VAST majority of internet content at all.
As to other claims - A little bit of quality time will turn up more than a few scary quotes from people in the Legislative branch - Congress[persons] specifically can say some very scary things. The basic upshot of the entire debacle is that lawyers are trying to pass laws affecting a medium they don't understand to protect outmoded buggy-whip manufacturers from having their various playgrounds torn down, and if anything, that fact may help in the long run as people who understand the implications come to the place where they are making the laws. - ThndrShk2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Don't worry, they'll lose ALL sales when they shut down the Internet.
They could never shut down the Internet, too many businesses use it and too many sites are located in the USA.
Even if they could, A LOT of people use the Internet, A LOT of people will know WHO shut down the Internet, A LOT of people will not buy stuff from who shut down the Internet, WHOEVER shut down the Internet will make no money, they will go bankrupt. They lose. Restricting the Internet to the point of machine overlord status only makes people angry at who did it.
Plus this just means that they would be holding the Internet hostage to get what they want. It seems threats about shutting down the Internet would induce... terror?
They've kidnapped the internet, are you a bad enough dude to save it? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -27/+38This is on the same sensationalist and paranoid website which has banners saying that the United States was behind 9/11. Bye bye, credibility. I don't think I'll be trusting their analysis of anything related to law, much less common sense.
- DrClaw, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16We actually have one of the highest adoption rates of high speed in the world and better than that of the US if I remember right.

that is fascism - MrCobaltBlue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Not the internet! That's where my porn lives!
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It's a lot more likely that the WORLD-WIDE WEB users will shut down the RIAA!
- TheZorch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Won't happen and I'll tell you why. Neither the RIAA nor the US Courts nor the US Government can shut down the Internet. The World's economy depends on the Internet for everything from ATM transactions, wire transfers, eCommerce, communications, and more. Shutting down the Internet would send the world into the Dark Ages. Nobody would be stupid enough to allow something like this to happen, ever.
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16@ trenchMonkey
Yep. The connection is run by two talking beavers with a penchant for jelly beans. Their names are Frank and Gordon. - RetroRufio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Dude, thanks for the comment. I was searching this page frantically for a voice of reason. I was afraid all these digg users thought there was a giant red lever connected to the internet.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Desolite
They won't "switch off" the internet, but make all file sharing illegal or require a license. If this case is won by the RIAA, they can have an extremely easy time going after YouTube and Google Video.
Imagine what the internet would be like if you needid an expensive license for everything you did.
Which is basically effectively taking it down. Full on no-net-neutrality nightmare. - rockyvirk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Seriously though, Do you guys really think this will ever happen? We are never going back to world without the "internets".
- LucianSolaris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Whelp, that'll be another law i will break regularly!
When brainwashing control freaks keep getting elected by the brainwashed idiots of America (self perpetuating problem) and the courts are bought off by corporate and IRS greed, the only thing left to do is defy to the death unreasonable laws. Defiance is a form of freedom.
In a tyranny death* is not something to be feared;
only by being defiant and unafraid of death* can one live free,
but only in death* can one truly be free.

I'm from the US and I regret that I only have one digg to give you. I would digg that comment a billion times if i could. - minorthreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6RIAA just found the Easy Button for the internet
- digga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Umm, that would be !=
- WindyT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Okay, Mr. RIAA, shut the internet down.
We'll just get Al Gore to invent us another one! - fegul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah right. They try to shut down the internet, you can guarantee Americans will fight hard. Hell even Congressmen would panic if even Google went down let alone the entire internet
There would probably be a revolution if that was to ever happen - JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Internet was originally designed to survive nuclear attacks over north america...
And there are too big interests in internet to see it destroyed. It's like China. Sure there are repression and wild totalitarism; and they should be free there; but... we cannot touch them! - bvinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4its very easy to shutdown the internets. all you need to do is break into 11 of the most secured buildings in the world (equinix if you didn't know) and start up plugging cables.
Here is a hint start with the orange ones made of glass. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The RIAA can go to hell. They will never rob me of my internet!
- rageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One word!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I've never seen such a stupid grandiose claim made in my life, you might as well just say the sun bothers you, I might go flick a switch and turn it off. - sonycam, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Noone can turn off the internet.
Not even some US based organisation which nobody likes. The internet is much bigger than the US and the world economies would crumble if the internet was no more. - jstevewhite, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@ilyag -
No, corporatism is distinct from capitalism in the same way the sapling differs from the tree. Free Market Capitalism inevitably leads to corporate fascism - look at history. Any "ism" in and of itself is destined for destruction; until we, collectively, realize that there are times to apply socialist philosophies, times to apply capitalist philosophies, times to apply communist philosophies... until that time, we'll continue to roll over 'single isms' and bury them. Until folks realize that business can happen because there are laws describing it, and those laws are made for the betterment of society and NOT corporations, we'll continue our headlong rush towards corporate-sponsored oligarchy. - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow. I bet the lawyer who originally made the OBVIOUSLY offhand comment about being able to "shut down the internet" is either laughing his ass off, or regretting he ever said it. In case any of you, STILL DON'T GET IT, here's the original quote:
"Now, there's a case called Electro vs. Barker which has become very important. This is a nursing student who was sued in her name. We made a motion to dismiss the complaint because doesn't specify any acts or dates or times of copyright infringement as the law normally requires. We've made several arguments like that before this motion and the RIAA put in an argument which basically fudged it. However, in this case they basically decided to go for the gold and they made a bold argument claiming that merely making files available on the internet is in and of itself a copyright infringement. It was a shocking argument because if it were accepted it would probably shut down the entire internet."

Now, don't worry, everybody. The tubes aren't gonna break any time soon.
(Goddamned people taking things out of context... marked as inaccurate.) - etatheta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No matter what the RIAA wants they will never be able to do it. Coming from a family of lawyers and about to enter into lawschool i looked into it a bit when i heard about this a couple days ago. First the internet is considered a public domain and the law says no public domains can be closed due to the actions by one individual. Also Since the world economy revolves around the internet at this point the gov't would definately put in a junction to stop this action cause the global economy would come to a standstill. Theres no way any gov't would allow that to happen. Also theres no way to "turn off" the internet. The most the US gov't could do is shutdown their servers and switches which yes would stop about 95% of all internet traffic. but there are still back pathways that can be used. the internet would be slow but it would never shut down. PLUS Cisco would have new servers and switches in the old ones place in a matter of hours that the gov't couldn't control. Especially since Cisco conrtols the servers and switsches in the first place the Gov't only ownes them. THEN this law suite would not include the "Internet 2" servers whiich alot of users are already on and may more users could easil;y be switched to.
So to sum it up. The internet could only be slowed down at most for maybe 2 days unitl Cisco would replace the Gov't servers and switches which would never happen cause so many businesses and gov't agencies would file junctions against the order to shut it down it will never happen. - Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9This is ludicrous and impossible.
The economy would completely collapse and hundreds of thousands of people would be without jobs if the internet was shut down.
Furthermore, no one country or organization has the authority or ability to perform such an act.
The sky is not falling. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those two pictures in the story are priceless...and would make great tee-shirts.
- MrSpock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Google would have every last one of the RIAA's testicles in a jar on their desk if they tried. No one messes with our Google overlords.
- unusualbob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5and the strongbad name reference
- Tainek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love how people think this would "Shut down the internet"
You mean america would be taken out of the circle, the rest of the world would adapt and agree on a new centre for the internet, and the american economy would collapse, rippling damage throughout the world
the internet in america=! the whole Internet
Still, not as if this will ever happen, no fool would yes this -
