- ShempRider, on 04/16/2008, -4/+76OK, that thumbnail of him isn't helping his cause.
- sagat, on 04/16/2008, -11/+79It's a very difficult time to become pope with the majority of the clergy past their sell by date, massive scandals, young people not interested in faith anymore but they picked a good choice, the guy is very down to Earth he drinks beer and likes to be amongst the people rather than sitting on a throne. Most of you don't see it but the Catholic church does a lot of very important work from Education to missions in the poorest parts of the world. It's hugely important to have a leader with common sense who will in time modernise thinking as it relates to contraception and other big issues.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -5/+70I already liked him when I found out he looks like Emperor Palpatine.
- coyoteblue, on 04/16/2008, -1/+55Holy ***** did anybody read the second page? The friggin pope just endorsed separation of church and state.
- makkaveli19, on 04/16/2008, -13/+62for some weird reason i'm starting to like this guy more and more. first the bush thing, and now this.
- negativenancy, on 04/16/2008, -8/+43Pedobear is sad :(
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -2/+36He finds your lack of faith disturbing.
- twertyto, on 04/16/2008, -1/+25Why does that endorsement come as a surprise? Look at the history of the Church. The combination of the two is just as bad for the Church as it is for the state. The Church was in a bad place during the Middle Ages when it was essential run by the French monarchy.
- ShempRider, on 04/16/2008, -2/+25My apologies, Lord Vader. I didn't recognize you with your new hat.
- IIAmusedII, on 04/16/2008, -1/+20Trying to tell us something about your personal life? We don't want to know.
- DanCMH, on 04/16/2008, -33/+49Funny how he wasnt suffering when he wrote a memo a few years back outlining how the church could hide pedophile priests to save money.
...and he hasnt personally suffered ***** until he's been forcibly sodomized by a man he trusted four or five times his size. - greenblob, on 04/16/2008, -1/+16"But he said the United States was interesting because it 'started with positive idea of secularism.' 'This new people was made of communities that had escaped official state purges and wanted a lay state, a secular state that opened the possibility for all confessions and all form of religious exercise,' he added. 'Therefore it was a state that was intentionally secular. It was the exact opposite of state religion, but it was secular out of love for religion and for an authenticity that can only be lived freely.'”
Dugg - sagat, on 04/16/2008, -3/+17Like any path with access to children - social worker, teachers etc, it tends to be abused by paedophiles.
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -3/+14That wasn't him but his alter ego 'Darth Sidious' ... 'um I mean 'Joseph Ratsinger'.
- dafragsta, on 04/16/2008, -1/+11Something something something Dark Side! Something something something com-PLETE!
- pintomp3, on 04/16/2008, -3/+13much like what happened at abu gharib was blamed on a few bad soldiers, he is blaming it on a few bad priests. he is leaving out the bishops who tried to cover it up and moved them around instead of punishing them.
- twertyto, on 04/16/2008, -1/+10In addition to what sagat said above, this is not just a problem with the Catholic Church. Other faiths and organizations have similar issues but you don't hear about them must since most don't boast billions of members. Other Christian faiths without celibacy vows (like the Lutherian and Anglican denoms) experience the same issues with sexual abuse.
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -5/+14Next up, Mohamed says he's sorry he married that 9 year old.
- m0n0kr0m3, on 04/16/2008, -3/+11He's a lying douche! Not only was he in on the cover up, but as a Cardinal, he was the engineer of it.
- stfucupcake, on 04/16/2008, -6/+14The most inspiring priest I ever had was --scandal of scandals-- found to be secretly married with two children after 20 years of priesthood. The church made him choose between the his family and the priesthood. He chose his family. What a loss for the our parish and the Catholic Church in general.
The Roman Catholic Church needs to change and allow married men to become priests, as the Eastern branches of the Catholic Church do. No, it won't end all the problems but surely, surely it will have a seriously good impact on the church. - ziggy1283, on 04/16/2008, -2/+9I don't remember where I read it, but a child is nearly 100 times more likely to be molested by a relative or close neighbour than by a priest.
It's just a lot more heinous when it comes from someone who is supposed to be a "man of God." - LuciusVorenus77, on 04/16/2008, -2/+9Seems like this internet thing is a bit of a struggle for many of you. Go to a page called Google, and once there type in these words: pope benedict memo pedophile. And magically, the evidence will appear! WOW!
- krnldmp, on 04/16/2008, -5/+11I've expressed deep shame over priests before and nobody cared.
- rowlodge, on 04/16/2008, -1/+6okay then give everything away to the poor and start over.
- Myztry, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5The "God fearing Christian" mantra needs to be dropped as well. Fear is never a worthy way to gain support. I know the Church no longer converts people (as with Pagans) through there fear of Fire and the Cross, but the fear aspect need to be removed completely. Including things such as 'Judgement Day' and 'burning in hell'
- m0n0kr0m3, on 04/16/2008, -5/+9This guy led the charge to cover it up as a Cardinal, too bad you all are so gullible. This has been proven and is not news. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-2336914 ...
- luchid, on 04/16/2008, -5/+9"You can rationalize ANYTHING when you believe "GOD" is on your side"
Like the way you rationalize your biggoted hatred on gay people? - inactive, on 04/16/2008, -8/+12So if this happened to a _different_ TAX FREE corporation we would be ok with just an "I'm sorry"??
This *****, alone, should go to jail b/c of his letter to the bishops.
HOW WOULD WE REACT IF THE HEAD OF THE BOY SCOUTS WAS CAUGHT KNOWING ABOUT MASSIVE, MASSIVE CHILD MOLESTATION AND HE WROTE A LETTER TELLING REGIONAL LEADERS TO KEEP QUIET????? - sexypeon, on 04/16/2008, -2/+6Yeah, both of those links don't work...
- schmitey, on 04/16/2008, -0/+4Just want to point out that there ARE priest in the Catholic Church who are married. Priest of the ancient Byzantine rite (just recently realigned with the Church after the years of work by Pope John Paul II) can marry as long as its before they are ordained. Priest in some areas of Africa are also allowed to marry due to extreme shortages in clergy. Married clergy is not the answer. Not the way it was intended and just from a practical standpoint married priest don't have as much time to deal with their priestly obligations (which takes place 24/7).
- schmitey, on 04/16/2008, -3/+7yup only bad things. you're right. they don't educate people, help out the poor, push for nonviolence, or anything else. pure evil.
- twertyto, on 04/16/2008, -6/+10and your evidence of this memo is?
- anonpost, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5God incarnate? Refuses to come clean? What are you smoking?
First off, no pope has never ever claimed to be God reincarnate but the top ambassador of God. St Peter was the first pope and all popes have tried to live as he did since that time. Find me one place in the letters of St. Peter where Peter claims superiority over others? In fact St Peters message was the exact opposite. Humility, tolerance, compassion for others. You do realize the pope is voted in by hundreds of cardinals and doesn't just take the position of pope because he is 'superior'
And yes he has renounced his nazi youth, find me any record of the pope where he states he supports nazism? Are you telling me if you were 10 years old and George W forced you to join his propoganda campaign and the military along with brainwashing that you wouldn't be subjected to it yourself? You are the only one sounding superior here. You at the age of 10 were more concerned with Gi-Joes, Super nintendos, and the good things in life, so stop acting like you were so wise at the age of 10. Your parents dictated your every move and you damn well know it. Do you not believe in forgiveness for repentance?
Women are allowed to be nuns, lectors, missionaries, alter servers, almost anything they wish in the church except priests. This is a fact, but it does not hold women down from following the message of Christ. Many great Saints are women and by their holyness were granted visions of Jesus, our mother Mary, and many other people that priests of their and our time only dreamed of seeing. If God is going to make his presence known to you, he is going to do it whether you are a priest or a common woman with faith. Women are encouraged to be celebate, not knocked up and pregnant unless you wish to start a family.
Dear atheist, what dictates your values? If you do not believe in God, why are you nice to others? Why might you do a good thing out of the kindness of your heart? This is God working inside you, no matter how much you wish to deny it. Humans hold a special place in the history of the world for a reason.
Please be more informed and provide some sources before you make these claims. - rickytan, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3So being a closeted homosexual is worse than being a member of the Hitler Youth? Nice.
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -1/+4Ratzinger was the guy responsible for that policy. The same guy.
- LittleFishChan, on 04/16/2008, -5/+8If you have a bit of free time, look up the history of the Roman Catholic church. They've done some horrible things in the past.
- yahoofrom, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3I think his face rocks. But Morgan Freeman as Pope would rock more.
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3I guess these priests repent after every one of their molestations. /S
- Kelgari, on 04/16/2008, -4/+7until the catholic church starts throwing it's pedophile priests in jail, it's all just talk.
- twertyto, on 04/16/2008, -2/+5?? I'm not hiding the fact that I am.
- opticwind, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3It's not slavery, people willingly join the church and always have the option to leave the priesthood. Just because some priests can't uphold their vows doesn't mean it's wrong to have celibacy.
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -4/+7Hypocrite?
- Seifey, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3I got "Did you mean: Reagan Devil 666".
Must be a bug. - waluum, on 04/16/2008, -6/+8Some of these comments make it evident that if you can't digg substance in this community then you might as well digg nonsense.
You probably have a very limited scope of the true and primary intentions of the church, otherwise you would not waste a click, or a thought, to support comments that denigrate the wisdom and compassion of the Pope. - inactive, on 04/16/2008, -6/+8And he still remains an enabler for such behavior. It makes me sick when leaders of nations acknowledge the pope and spend millions on security for him.
- xutopia, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2I'm Atheist and from what I remember the book doesn't say anything about priests having to be celibate. I'm pretty sure celibacy was a requirement that arrived much later.
- Amadeus2490, on 04/16/2008, -1/+3Devil's Advocate Says: Under Hitler's rule, if you didn't support your Fuhrer you were detained and killed. Millions supported him out of fear for their lives. Jews, Gypsies and many other races didn't even get that luxury. When you're a child under the rule of one of the most monstrous dictators in history, you don't really have a choice.
- TheAkolyte, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2I see. But, just like my gayness encourages homosexual pedophilia, your straightness encourages heterosexual pedophilia. You should be ashamed, you ***** hypocrite; ruining the lives of so many young women with your unadulterated heterosexuality. Pathetic.
- rpebble, on 04/16/2008, -1/+3I don't understand why people are digging you down...maybe they don't recognize the sarcasm? I mean, you didn't put [/sarcasm] at the end of your post, so that might be it. Sometimes that confuses people.
- Me1000, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2ok so?
This is why he came out and talked about it! Because he had to, but no matter what he said it was going to piss someone off... -
