- renanrrinaldi, on 06/07/2009, -5/+89The trial version avionics expired during the flight.
The error messages sent were just a failed attempt to activate the product. - nova912, on 06/06/2009, -1/+67Hmm... I wonder how many error messages, on average, were sent on all planes over the course of a year of travel.
- Polycarp87, on 06/07/2009, -1/+49Although, this does not sound good ==> "Speaking at a press conference in Paris, the director of France's air accident investigation agency, Paul-Louis Arslanian, said a total of 24 error messages were received in the final moments of Air France 447, as its systems shut down one by one. "
I can't stop imagining what it would be like to be sitting on a plane over the middle of the Atlantic and seeing the air vents stop putting out air, the lights switch off, the engines go silent, and then feeling the plane decelerate silently and begin to slowly tilt forward towards the ocean and glide/fall in silence for several minutes. - JasonHilton, on 06/07/2009, -2/+48That all depends if Jack Bauer is aboard.
- Polycarp87, on 06/07/2009, -0/+44Without a mention of average error message rates for normal flights, this really doesn't mean anything.
- samard2002, on 06/07/2009, -2/+41Why are people digging you down? The Bermuda Triangle is a well documented phenomenon where things disappear without warning. I'm posting from the Bermuda Triangle right now and I can te
- valleyman86, on 06/07/2009, -2/+37I feel bad about laughing about that comment but that's pretty funny...
- charlietuna, on 06/07/2009, -5/+37Abort, retry, fail?
- ThetaDot, on 06/06/2009, -2/+32I don't know... 24 error messages 'minutes before it crashed' seems like some sort of catastrophic event occurred (or a domino effect.. which I would doubt given the testing the software on the aircraft likely underwent). I hope the real cause is somehow uncovered..

- maus56, on 06/07/2009, -6/+25Switch to Lufthansa. You know the Germans always make good stuff.
- valleyman86, on 06/07/2009, -6/+24I find it funny that people are dissing on windows/PCs(whatever your definition of this may be) with this article. In such a serious "real time" situation, a Mac Linux or Windows computer would not be sufficient. It's not that these operating systems are not well designed, its because in most areas of avionics on an aircraft they would need a real time OS. Most of this should be proprietary (unless there's a damn good general RT OS out). In this case, I would think the error messages are hardware failures and less of a software issue. 24 messages (granted we have nothing to compare that too) could mean one thing went to ***** and 23 other things followed because of dependency.
- d686, on 06/07/2009, -0/+17A bunch of airline pilots and maintenance engineers discuss a leaked list of the error messages and what could have caused them:

- Chairboy, on 06/07/2009, -2/+18"On their own"? ATC cannot crawl through the radio connection to help you with a disintegrating aircraft.

"Plane"
[ENTER] - byrdboy, on 06/07/2009, -1/+17Like the electrical systems, for instance.
Also, I do believe they have their own software, just like heart monitoring machines run their own code and not WinXP Pro w/ Heart Monitoring Plus! installed. - bal00, on 06/07/2009, -3/+18You got one thing right, you are biased.

- falafelkiosken, on 06/07/2009, -1/+11500: Internal plane error
- sparkplug890, on 06/07/2009, -0/+9I guess they needed some pirates onboard but they were all on ships instead.
- commulction, on 06/07/2009, -0/+9Nope.
- dagamer34, on 06/07/2009, -1/+10Let's not crazily believe that switching air carriers makes you "more safe". Heck, you're far more likely to get in a car wreck than to be in a plane wreck. Does this mean you will stop driving?
Or the fact that the regular seasonal flu kills FAR more people than swine flu ever will this year?
People need to stop taking things out of perspective. That's how misinformation spreads. - Hedison, on 06/07/2009, -0/+8I don't really know what to make of this. How many error messages do you get during a flight usually
What were the error messages? - d686, on 06/07/2009, -0/+8Even one error message of that severity per flight is very unusual. The messages described major failures of the flight computers, airspeed sensors, etc. Average airline pilot might experience major flight computer failure a couple of times a career.
- cjw10, on 06/07/2009, -1/+8Because the people on the ground are going to hold your hand? There only job is traffic seperation and answering distress calls. The pilots of AF447 didn't make any distress calls nor activated any ELTs. Whatever happened, happened quickly as pilots are drilled since day 1, 121.5 for emergency. Planes going across oceans monitor 121.5 so they can relay to ATC if they pick anything up.
- goalieguy314, on 06/07/2009, -0/+7Stop digging this guy down. Most people have no idea that during oceanic travel aircraft are for the most part out of contact. There is no atc once you get beyond a certain point and certainly no radar coverage. The aircraft is pretty much on its own. However, limited text communication is still available through digital HF (limited range) and satcomm (expensive).
- Wheelingdude86, on 06/07/2009, -1/+8Giant Shark?
- copypastry, on 06/07/2009, -4/+11UAC Warning: The plane is to crash. Crashing the plane may cause system instability. Are you sure you want to do this?

- bal00, on 06/07/2009, -10/+16It's amusing to see how some Americans instantly lose 30 IQ points when they hear the name Airbus.
- diggification, on 06/07/2009, -7/+13Flying out over the open ocean is now going to make me more nervous. I didn't realize that planes are pretty much out of contact and on their own once they are significantly offshore.
- cjw10, on 06/07/2009, -7/+13Its funny how Europeans think they gain 50 IQ points when they mention Americans.
Oh, and Boeing > Airbus > Any Russian Made Plane (will be interesting to see if the Sukhoi Superjet can expand out of Russian carriers). - linagee, on 06/07/2009, -1/+7PCs? As in an intel/amd x86 cpu architecture? Who says they aren't?
- KMartSheriff, on 06/07/2009, -3/+9What's horrible is that 5 people have so far dugg you down, meaning they disagree with you. I'd love to see their response if they got left in the middle of the atlantic ocean.
- relaxx, on 06/07/2009, -2/+8Just because people digg a comment down, doesn't mean they're disagreeing with it.
I think it's just that it's overtly obvious that this is horrible, it did not need to be expressed in comment form. - DeathRay2K, on 06/07/2009, -2/+7I'm pretty sure it was a monster attack.
- NtHammer, on 06/07/2009, -0/+5It's not the fact that it is probably a quick death, more that you have 6 seconds to fully accept imminent death. 6 seconds might not seem long but i guarantee thats the longest 6 seconds of your soon-to-end life.
