Pictures That Changed The World
slorker.com — Slate magazine has a collection of Magnum photos which changed the world. Mostly doused in black and white gradients, these pictures feature significant historical incidents. Some of them, like the picture of the girl who grew up in a concentration camp are remarkably powerful reflections on our actions.

- cdigioia, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6Yeah, it sums up the amazing technological advancement, switches to democracy, increased education rates, rise of the US as the sole superpower, etc.../sarcasm
It's a great photo, and a powerful event, but let's not get carried away and say it summarizes the intricacies of the entire last century...I'm gonna get dug down for saying this though, oh well. - sadilak, on 02/19/2008, -0/+15I am surprised that they did not have the photo of Kim Phuc

- wukillabee, on 02/19/2008, -4/+0Kim Phuc? as in Kim *****?
- autitastic, on 02/19/2008, -2/+104Quite an overstated title really. Most of them aren't pictures that changed the world, but pictures of events that did. Also the commentary is absurd: The Sharpeville Massacre is talked about in terms of how they 'love the shot of the clouds'. Also, I was under the impression that the photo of the segregated water fountain the was that water is from the same source, but they seem to miss that too. Why don't you just link to the better original: http://todayspictures.slate.com/20070619/ ?
- diggB, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Agreed for the most part. The link to the original you gave is much, much better. However, some of the pictures DID change the world. The world's opinion of China was dramatically shaped by the photo of the lone man confronting the line of tanks in Tiananmen Square, for example. But, you're dugg, nevertheless.
- autitastic, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2I agree, hence 'most of them'. Tiananmen was the one I was particularly thinking of.

I think the official team uniform for the united states should feature a picture of tank-man.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Tiananmen_Square ...- wastelander, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4"Naming of incident
In the Chinese language, the incident is most commonly known as the June Fourth Movement (simplified Chinese: 六四运动; traditional Chinese: 六四運動), the June Fourth Incident (Chinese: 六四事件), or colloquially, simply Six-four (June 4th) (Chinese: 六四).[citation needed] The nomenclature of the former is consistent with the customary names of the other two great protest actions that occurred in Tiananmen Square: the May Fourth Movement of 1919, and the April Fifth Movement of 1976. In some contexts, "June Fourth Movement" refers more generally to all the student and civil unrest which occurred throughout China, in addition to the events in Beijing and specifically Tiananmen Square. The government of the People's Republic of China has referred to the event as the Political Turmoil between Spring and Summer of 1989 (Chinese: 春夏之交的政治風波)."

this last one is a pdf, but it contains hundred of pictures of the My Lai massacre and some of these pictures were published in Life Magazine and they rocked the country and sent the whole country into debate, similar to abu ghraid picutres (those should be on the list as well) - Vodka2389, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Absolutely. - mikinurbook, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Indeed. Although I typically see media outlets as biased, as the old cliche goes, pictures speak 1000 words...whether they're world changing events or not.
- Mazerunakiken, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3The segregated water fountains. The sourse of water is not segregated. Why?
- jawnboy, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Because it had nothing to do with reality and was all about perception.

- theskyisblue, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2"War never changes..."
- monkeyboyhero, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6Nice pictures, but the comments underneath are completely facile.
Example: "I would love to know the context of this slightly surrealistic picture. Is he sunbathing or protesting with his body? The placement of the body just in front of the demolishing tractor just makes it so ambiguous. Love the little kid in pink."
Yeah, I understand why the photo thanks. Photos like these don't need a superfluous explanation, they speak for themselves. Why the author felt the need to explain the picture showing a black man drinking from a segregated water fountain is beyond me.- Coffeedemon, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1Because not everyone knows the history. He didn't trivialize it. You (might) be shocked but there are a lot of people who would see that picture and not know what its all about.
- monkeyboyhero, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2The captions in italics under the photos very concisely explain what they are off. The author's comments are completely extraneous.

That's funny I don't recall enslaving little girls.- Coffeedemon, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1And because noone (obviously thats not true but I don't think many of us commenting right now are guilty in that same sense) has done these horrible things in todays society we should forget that they did happen or try to understand what brought us to the point where they could happen? There's a nice quote about what happens when you ignore history.
- birdly, on 02/19/2008, -2/+11Clearly, Tank Man was photoshopped in.
Love and kisses,

- janrose, on 02/22/2008, -0/+0I was very touched that you appreciated the photo of me at 17. I was and am a peace pilgrim. This was not just a photo op. Demonstrating was not enough, though. I spent over 10 years going into prisons and institutions, both juvenile and adult, to do support groups. In many ways I have tried to serve, and continue to do so. When the War in Iraq was looming, '03, I went to London and marched over 5 kilometers, even though I was on crutches. My voice comes directly from the heart.
I am worried about this country. I have a 16 year old daughter, and I wonder about the world the is inheriting. Bush has made such a f*fking mess......it is up; to ALL of us to do whatever we can.
I have a tough time knowing how to use the net to be heard better. I would appreciate any suggestions - help..
