- smacksaw, on 07/13/2009, -2/+64Or as I would have titled it: "Random shots of varying quality over the last 10-20 years of people who happen to be Muslims"
- mrpunman, on 07/13/2009, -14/+49Being a Muslim, I'm glad I'm living in a peaceful country like Malaysia where there is no war and massive killing (but there is still porn!)
But I'm sad that because of some people, the world is seeing us all as extremists. Religion is not violent and oppressing. People and cultures are. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -11/+40I've yet to see a religion that is not oppressive in someway.
except perhaps to its founders.
As for Malaysia, your gov are currently threatening many of the secular laws of your country. - elijahyossie, on 07/13/2009, -7/+29Fantastic series of photos, very interesting indeed. There's such unexpected variety there.
- 3rdDay, on 07/13/2009, -1/+14Those Al-Mahdi Scouts gave me the *****. Between the fanaticism and that really suspicious salute they looked way, way too like Hitler Youth.
- bratterscain, on 07/13/2009, -6/+18This is our religion. If you are going to be in our church or group, you are going to believe ______ and ______ and if you are not _______, dress ______ way, and act _______, then you are not a true ______.
Tell me again religion is not oppressing. - n0t0kayipr0mis3, on 07/14/2009, -2/+13Timothy McVeigh represents Christianity like Osama Bin Laden represents Islam. As an American Muslim, I have yet to meet a single Muslim who is violent or oppressing. Every religion has their extremists.
- Quaterni0n, on 07/13/2009, -3/+13Kids playing foosbal. Women shopping. Oh yeah! Very sensationalist.
- anthropodeus, on 07/13/2009, -1/+11"who happen to be Muslim humans or dolls."*
- wefarrell, on 07/13/2009, -5/+13maybe porn is the reason why you have neither war nor massive killing.
- ChileanGoD, on 07/13/2009, -2/+8Who though this was about Microsoft?
- J3ff3ryD, on 07/13/2009, -4/+9Ideologies separate us. Dreams and anguish bring us together.
Eugene Ionesco - sdave88, on 07/13/2009, -7/+11You are a retarded person.
- cygnus2112, on 07/13/2009, -2/+6I used to believe that, as well, when I was young and naive. The truth is ... people are intrinsically selfish.
- ryancawdor, on 07/13/2009, -2/+6Staggeringly average. My friend showed me the photos he took during a trip to the Mid-East a couple of years ago and they easily trumped these.
- NorrisOBE, on 07/13/2009, -3/+7I've yet to see a religion that is not oppressive in someway.
Buddhism? Taoism? Baha'ism? Sufism(Part of Islam, but the least violent of them all). - Rassa, on 07/13/2009, -2/+6Some reason these photos didn't do much for me. Didn't find them moving or interesting for that matter.
- Propethic, on 07/13/2009, -5/+8Well the uniform sure is oppressing. Women can't show their bodies? Orthodox jews wearing the same thing whether is 40 degrees or 104? I don't see how they can look at themselves in the mirror and not shake their fist at their god for these cruel jokes
- nepidae, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4In general any religion attracts uneducated folk..
- CloseYetFar, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Yea photo 7 is almost like history repeating itself. Ironically if Hitler had his way, the Muslims would not even exist today.
- arcusxx, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4@oriondr
Please do not say anything if you lack the knowledge, it will only show your ignorance.
If you really know about Islam, there is no such thing as to rid the world of the infidels, killing all the Jews, Christians, etc. If this was true, Jews and Christians in Madinah during Prophet Muhammad's time will definitely be killed. But, this did not happen.
Every religion has their extremists, and it's all depend on the culture itself. - guruboyguru, on 07/13/2009, -3/+6So...does #7 remind anyone of anything?
- arcusxx, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3Then why do the nuns/sisters cover their body? It shows that even in Christianity, women should cover their body. Read the Bible. There are so much things in the Bible that contradicts to Christianity belief like drinking alcohol.
- thugcup, on 07/14/2009, -2/+4The UK is becoming Islamistan.
- p51d007, on 07/14/2009, -2/+4Picture #7 explains to me "how in the hell do you get people to blow themselves up?". Get em when they are young, fill their heads with a bunch of CRAP and they will believe anything you say.
- mostafagalal, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2"Photographer Alexandra Avakian compiles a personal narrative of her 20 years shooting Islam around the world."
You've got to see the irony in that. - rezilient, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2“O children of Adam, We have provided you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness. These are some of God's signs, that they may take heed.” (Al-A`raf 7:26)
- skipvt, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2I missed the one were it shows women getting whipped for wearing pants.
- blingbin, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3i think i speak for most of us when I say:
***** YOU - eyepennies, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1You did not say people are instinctually selfish; you said they are intrinsically selfish.
If you had said people are instinctually selfish, I would have had no choice but to agree with you and be on my way.
Because you said they were intrinsically selfish and then tried to pretend that that has ever been proven either rationally or empirically, I felt the need to point out what I did.
People are instinctually selfish: Realistic and an observation that is borne out empirically - although even this is debated and even Dawkins is beginning to rethink his thesis on selfishness and how it relates to genes vs. organisms vs. societies.
People are intrinsically selfish: No amount of evidence can ever get to this kind of ontological truth, so to take a stance on this is more of an emotional/psychological attachment that some call optimism/pessimism. I fall on the optimism side, in that I think that man can transcend his instincts through awareness and conscious action; moreover, I reject that the sole motivator of all apparently altruistic action is self-interest, enlightened or otherwise. You are free to believe that that is the case, but I suspect from your line, "Philanthropy is rare in percentage and is thought to be done for a variety of reasons..." that you also realize that that stance is on shaky empirical ground ("is thought to...").
Anyway, that is all to say that I wholeheartedly agree that the long, bloody, selfish history of life on Earth is indeed a sad, sad fact. But I wholeheartedly disagree that it HAS to be, as encoded by our genes and needs, and that it will forever be because of said genes and needs. - Fokuss, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2This collection of photos was called "Windows of the Soul". Nowhere does it say "Muslim" in the title of the collection. In some of the descriptions yes, but not in the collection. There are a few photos here that are about Muslims, but for the most part this is far from a representative cross section of the "Muslim Soul". Might need to bury as inaccurate and very surprised most people did not see the error.
- NorrisOBE, on 07/13/2009, -2/+3Dude, i'm a Muslim myself. Do i give ***** if a woman shows too much skin?
- nepidae, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2thanks for sharing
- Galgum, on 07/13/2009, -2/+3That Fizzly-Bubbly he's drinking with make you repaint your toilet later. (5 points if you get the reference.)
- azw202, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1zohan much?
- Aynoori, on 08/10/2009, -0/+1very interesting photos, although there are many other things to expose but these have covered some.
- grantmoore3d, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2"This town is renowned for the quality of its carpets" - Must be for the ones that can walk.
- beatbinky79, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1"who happen to appear Muslim."
- bohemianmomo, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1/s (i hope)
- kohltrain917, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1The description is pretty unnerving...
- Madsen, on 07/13/2009, -3/+4Hmmm...whatever rocks your boat but...I don't believe in Thor, Unicorns, Elfs, God, Allah or Zeus...I believe in treating other people like I myselffwould like to be treated...
- oriondr, on 07/14/2009, -3/+3Yes, but in the case of Christianity, it's the perversion of the religion which allows for violence, whereas in Islam, violence is encouraged through the doctrine.
In Christianity only the old testament (Jewish teachings) which really promote violence and bigotry.
So really, if you're a truly hardcore Christian that follows Jesus's teachings, you aren't violent, whereas if you're a truly hardcore Muslim, you will want to rid the world of the infidels. I'm not making this up, I don't know why people don't get this *****, especially people who claim to be Muslim. This isn't bigotry, this is just paying attention to what's actually written in the Koran.
Of course, all religions are exceedingly stupid, so I subscribe to none of such nonsense. - rosshershey, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1What, no explosions?
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1That's actually not an oppressive statement.
If you join a club follow the rules or leave. That right there is freedom of choice.
unfortunately religions don't often act like social clubs... - azw202, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0 Throughout history there were horrible acts done by the name of Christianity and Christ, remind me again didn't Bush say he invaded Iraq because, " God told him so". Most religions have their extremists except Christians are hypocrites to admit it. In fact there is more violence committed by people who are Christians more than any other religion COMBINED.
- azw202, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0it's obvious he is not a muslim, he just being a troll
- wondertwins, on 07/14/2009, -2/+2Pic 10 reminds me of the intro in CoD Modern Warfare.
- azw202, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0They have access to porn in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Iran, and pretty much any other country in that region.
- thugcup, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0who we can be like 'hmmm how cultural! lets convert!'
