Now they just need to add live GPS tracking of all sex offenders. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -15/+44"pervert surveillance is still surveillance. hello big brother."

Don't want to be tracked online? Don't ***** children. Doesn't seem that tough. - slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27"Don't want to be tracked online? Don't ***** children. Doesn't seem that tough."
Mooning, consensual sex, public urination (even in the woods), etc. can get one labeled as a sex offender. We should be worried about pedophiles, not most of the ***** that actually does get a person labeled a sex offender. - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29Finally, I can get off craigslist and find some real action!
- TGMD, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28They paid their debt to society.
You don't want sex offenders on your streets? Then increase the amount of time they spend in prison. But once their out they don't deserve to be treated this way. They were punished and no matter what they did in the past they still have a right to privacy.
(Although personally I think we should execute most sex offenders instead of giving them short prison terms) - AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20"Same here and there is an elementary school across the street!"
You do realize that "sex offender" does not equal "pedophile", right? People get all hysterical over sex offenders being around their kids, when there's probably a higher likelihood that he (statistically speaking, probably a "he") was the perpetrator of standard rape, and has no interest in children. Hell, it could be someone who had sex with their 16 year old girlfriend when they were 18 and got charged with statutory rape.
In other words, no need to get too paranoid here. Besides, there's no "violent assault" database or "murderer" database, so how many of your neighbors have been charged with violent crimes? You don't know, do you? Would having that information make you more safe? Doubtful.
So look at the database if you want, but try not to freak out about it. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"I'm a little sad i'm being dugg down on this one. Either digg is full of closet paedo's or the truth simply hurts too much..."
I guess a site like this would be OK if no one will use this map to attack the people that have served their penalties and been released as free men or women. Can you really guarantee this? Otherwise it seems it's just a risk of causing more trouble with the law than these offenders already did. Do you believe cops catching people attacking these would closet paedo's as well? I'm not sure, but your logic is a bit on the strange side. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17So, this is pretty much the definition of blogspam, no? Someone pimping their own blog?
Lord knows if I posted a link to merrebornweb.com/merreborn, I'd be buried as blogspam in no time... - ssego, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Just remember that not all sex offenders '***** a kid'. Some of them are statutory rape, and would not have been charged if they only checked ID before they boned. Lots of young girls run around ***** older guys to look cool to their prostitot friends, even if it means lying about their age. I can't count how many of my friends have found out a girl they shot with the meat rifle where under age. Then you've also got the 18 year olds with 16 year old girlfriends. All it takes is one pissed off parent and your on the registry.
- jamison18, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14In California, they actually do have to wear GPS trackers now :) thanks to prop 83
- Higgins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14• YOU ARE HERE

My 2nd comment was made as the original was being dugg down. The main point of the original post being:
"people forget that the person most likely to abuse a child is a member of their own family"
This is the case in every western country in the world. The vast (*VAST*) majority of child abuse cases are performed by a male member of the direct family. A sad and horrible truth, but a truth all the same.
You can (and will) digg me down all you like for it. I just wonder why. - realsurreal2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"Don't want to be tracked online? Don't ***** children. Doesn't seem that tough."
And don't get mistaken for one or be the victim of duff data. - SuitCase874, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Go ***** lynch him! huhuhuhuh! ***** pedos! huhuhuh
This is pathetic. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This makes me wonder just what exactly a "sex offender" is. In some states, urinating in public is considered indecent exposure, and if the judge decides to be an ***** that day, a person caught could get lumped in with the child molesting sickos.
Had sex with your g/f when she was 1 year below the legal age and you were 1 year above? Guess what, you're a sex offender! And a rapist! You're officially on the same level of John Wayne Gacy.
Accusing someone of a sex crime grants you a lot of power. It can ruin someone's life, permanently, even when they are falsely accused. I'm not supporting the real perverts in any way, I'm just saying that not everyone on this map is a dirty child molester. - Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You guys call these people "sick *****" etc... but do you not remember the CHILD that was going to be marked as a sex offender at the age of 6 or so because he put his face on his teacher's chest while giving her a hug?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This makes me feel bad for the guys who got caught for public urination and got registered as a sex offender.
- koushi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9http://www.mapsexoffenders.com/images/family1b.jpg That's the scariest ***** picture ever.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Waits for all the witch hunts as idiots try to take the law into their own hands despite the legal system having done it's job...
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Sexually violating our children is one of them."
You mean like the 17 year old black male who was found guilty of receiving oral sex from a 15 year old white female and received 10 years in prison and lifetime sex offender status?
How dare he!
I agree this is probably the exception and not the rule but I continually see the definitions of "sexual predator" and "terrorist" being constantly changed to be more broad in the last 10 years.
Also a lot of job applications not only ask if you have been committed of a felony, but now tell you that you have to pass a drug test. And a background check. And an alcohol test. And some jobs places even check your credit before hiring you. And of course you are required to give them your social security number.
And if you rebel against any of this you are branded "unamerican" with the simple "if you're not with us, you're against us" mentality.
I love America. I just wish it was the way it should be. - Electric_Sheep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8" Any person who uses information contained in or accessed through this Website to threaten, intimidate, or harass any individual, including registrants or family members, or who otherwise misuses this information, may be subject to criminal prosecution or civil liability under federal and/or state law."
Nice to see they're covering their asses. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Sadly, in the UK, pediatricians would probably end up on a map like this...
- radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow the map of NYC is downright disturbing. Just do searches for Bronx, NY and Brooklyn, NY. eek!
- Lixie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm totally dumb and ignorant, so I have to ask, Why isn't there a Murderer's registry?
Or is there already one I don't know about?
Oh, and I had to bury the article because it was posting to a blog rather than actual source. Says something in the TOS about that being spam used to increase blog traffic. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"How do you want to find out your son's friend's dad is a sex offender?"
There you go, this is a classic example: you are assuming they are regular or current sex offenders. You are acting as though this is a map of people who are actively comitting sexual crimes and it's not. - shodanx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15parents are dumb, irrational
they're the stuff linch mobs are made of
they'd sacrifice 10 strangers to save one of their kids
they can't be trusted - doubledowndan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Buried as innacurate, i cant find myself anywhere on there.
- realsurreal2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Equally, your next door neighbour could be a druggy, pimp, murderer, wife-beater etc who hasn't been caught yet - they won't show up on any map either.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Apparently, education isn't a big thing there...
- ggarenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ Pic0
well how do you think? i think i'd much rather know from a website. the problem is that not EVERYBODY on there is a "stereotypical sex offender". that's why it seems ***** up to me. try this: you're 18, you're girlfriend is 16. you get caught *****. her parents don't like you, so they file charges. you will most likely be convicted, and then congrats, you're a rapist and now on the registry. if this story represents even ONE of those red markers, that means this system is being unjust. but again, i can't say much because i don't have the solution.
when i was 18, i did have a girlfriend that was 16. we did get caught *****. luckily, her parents liked me a lot, so there was no reason for anyone to press charges. all that happened was we had a couple awkward dinners :). but you know, what if - Sanitarium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Dude, thats just lame. I wish there was a way to digg a user himself down. Buried.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why don't we brand murderers and thieves as well for the rest of their lives? Surely we must protect society from them as well.
Would that be cruel and unusual punishment you say? Let them serve their time and leave them alone? Where is the line drawn? - rgodfrey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't suppose I'll make many friends by saying this, but how are these guys expected to rebuild their lives after hard time? It's got to be hard enough for an ex-felon without mandatory registration and websites like this. If we accept the notion that prison is meant to rehabilitate the prisoner, shouldn't we consider the debt paid when they get out? And if prison is not reformatory, shouldn't we either work to change that, or just leave everyone in there forever?
- milomilomilo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6this is a good thing.
The only problem with the sex offender registry is that it also includes things such as public urination and similarly ridiculous things.
Glad we can keep our kids safe, but be careful with broad sweeping stuff like "sex offender".
Dugg - ArntorFTL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Personally, I would feel far more secure knowing if my neighbor or others on my street are convicted burglars or car thieves rather than peter flashers or 16 year old girl fetishists.
If these people are so dangerous to society that they need to be monitored 24/7, have their whereabouts tracked, homes mapped and identities/addresses plastered on the internets for the world to see, then, by all means, PLEASE leave them in jail. - crysys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Because if you do that your kid will fall in love with the slutty girl from next door and when she moves away he will break out and travel cross country meeting all kinds of crazy, strange and scary characters in his highly cinematic wacky and entertaining adventure. But don't worry, in the end everything works itself out, he gets the girl and you learn an important lesson; you can't protect your kids from the real world forever and trying to do so will only leave them unprepared to deal with it when they ultimately do have to.
Yea, that was a funny movie. - crysys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5One problem with this is we are led to believe sex offenders tend to be repeat offenders. If the prison system does nothing to rehabilitate these people then can they really be trusted around your children? Do we need to change the way we deal with sex offenders?
True, your supposed to be done when your time has been served but in the real world this is hardly the case. Felons ARE denied jobs despite laws to protect them. How bad is it for a sex offender to who truly has changed their ways to integrate back into society? - Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8A survey popped up asking "What do you use our maps for?"
Second option is "Locate my own home"
WTF? - kurfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is unconstitutional (see "cruel and unusual punishment").
If someone has served their time, then they deserve to be left alone.
If they are still a danger to society, keep them in prison. - shodanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ssego
stop it with your party-killing "facts" and let the rest of the digg parents community go about their lynching will ya ? - fjvwing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thing is, there are discrepancies between that set of maps and the one in the article. So how reliable is all this information?
- zeno60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That picture on the front of mapsexoffenders.com scares the livin crap outta me...
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"once you ***** a kid, you lost your right to a normal life.."
Why do you assume it's just about kids? It's not, if you searched some people listed on this site. And how do we know who're listed? How severe does the crime need to be? I know *I* would be a sex offender if I while being drunk grabbed a girl on her boobs and got reported according to some standards. So many seem to be listed that I believe the requirement is pretty low, and that makes things even worse. - quaff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5ok.. so a law is a law right? so in nazi germany when it was a law to put jews into concentration camps, you'd follow that law? cause its a LAW? don't be stupid. use your head, think for yourself. Laws are made by humans, humans are not perfect, therefore the law is not perfect. If you don't believe in the law, don't follow it, think about it.
- Yashar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Aw *****. One of them is about 5 houses away from me.
- ggarenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this kind of thing is so hard to comment on...there are SO many reasons why this kind of registry should not exist, but at the same time, you bet your ass i checked my neighborhood and also my family's neighborhood where my little brother lives. if we were all completely unbiased, we'd say that having a registry like this is wrong and COMPLETELY unconstitutional.
I mean, what is the point of sending offenders to prison, or a "correctional facility"? To "correct" them, right? And also, why aren't there registries for every type of serious crime? Only seems fair.
I definitely think that the justice system is far from perfect, but i guess it's something. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6First they listed the sex offenders, but I said nothing since I wasn't a sex offender.
Then they listed the felons, but I said nothing because breaking the law is bad.
Next they started monitoring anyone who had been convicted of crime, but I said nothing because I don't break the law.
Then i remembered I had a speeding ticket.............doh! - darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Public urination!? *****! anyway does this map have those innocent kids that were labeled as sex offenders on it? I would like to pay them a visit to see how they are doing (not good I bet). Honestly, anyone think a map of convicted murderers would be a lot more helpful, sex offender is an umbrella term. If you are going to take this seriously then you must remember that statistically, you, or any other close relation, are more likely to molest or rape your kids than any stranger. This map will just prevent you from sending your kids into a neighborhood where some guy has pissed in an alley (probably me)
- kablammo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Next time link to the actual site - not your blog which will *then* link us to the site. Before you know it, every story on here will be a two step process of going to the submitters homepage before we can read what we're actually interested in.
Sorry dude. Pet peeve. -
