- hlegal, on 10/13/2007, -5/+4Was this comment supposed to be offensive? "IED's" are Improvised Explosive Devices". Please clarify.
- Quidam, on 10/13/2007, -1/+4No, IED was written because some people pronounce it that way. Instead of saying the word like "eeeeed" they say something that sounds like "ayeed". Doesn't have anything to do with actual IED's
- AscendoTuum, on 10/13/2007, -1/+2Not convincing enough, it was clearly meant as an insult. Anyone up for some retaliatory flag-burning?

- nixonrichard, on 10/20/2007, -24/+2They see a new moon and dine on sweet meats? . . . good thing they don't have this phenomenon in Iran.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/13/2007, -1/+20Come on mate, don't spoil it for us. Even though we're muslim most of us can't help but say "Merry Christmas" to Christian people at Christmas. You just get into that whole festive feel. It's not fair that we should have our Eid spoilt because of a few radical extremist who we also hate by the way.
- GawtMilk, on 10/13/2007, -1/+12I went to an Eid Mubarak party today, hosted by my Muslim friend. It's not like she doesn't come to my Christmas parties...
- hiPpymIck, on 10/13/2007, -2/+14is it the celebration at the end of a period of abstinence ..Ramadan..or am i just hopelessly confused
- Soofi, on 10/16/2007, -0/+8Hello, yes. Ramadan is the month in which muslims fast and abstain from food, drink and sexual activity from sunrise til sunset (daylight hours) - it is said that one who can control his hunger can control his other desires, and therefore it is a time of heightened spiritual awareness. In the Qur'an it also tells us that fasting was enjoined on muslims in order that we may learn self-restraint. This is widely understood to cover many things such as anger, bad thoughts, lying etc, and while it is expected of muslims to be avoiding these traits everyday, in Ramadan however it is one of those special times of year to try really hard to be good in unity with other people.
At the end of this holy month, we mark it with celebrations.. a prayer at the local mosque then we return home for big feasts and family get togethers.. and if you are young, you will be making some big bucks because instead of giving presents we tend to give straight hard cash!
Peace.

Is that like 3 days with ankles behind ears? God I hope so...- Pacificblue, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Nope.
- thepeacemaker, on 10/13/2007, -0/+7Even though the lunar month (and hence the Eid) is based on the new moon and one would think its up there for all to see, there are still disagreements as to when the Eid day occurs. There are three methods of moon sighting hence the different days of Eid celebrations.
Method 1: See the new moon with naked eye in the sky. Most people follow this method. If the sky is too cloudy then the month is considered as continuing till the maximum number of days in a lunar month ...can't be more than 30. One other issue is how widely does one sighting apply? Does a sighting in Houston mean people in Seattle or New York take the word for it?
Method 2: Follow the astronomical calculations (i.e. NASA website). This also depends on where we are located. Increasingly popular method but controversial among purists who want to do it the traditional way.
Method 3: There is a new moon cause Saudi govt says so. Amazingly enough a whole bunch of Middle Eastern countries go with this option.- barkingmoonbat, on 10/13/2007, -16/+1Seriously, who in their right mind would give a *****?
- Koldkompress, on 10/13/2007, -0/+10Umm. Muslims?
- barkingmoonbat, on 10/13/2007, -12/+0I said "right mind", not "brainless mind".

- Koldkompress, on 10/13/2007, -0/+10Umm. Muslims?
- smz414, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think local airports need to post it on their website along with weather reports or something since airplanes coming in can easily spot the moon, and also it is very stressful calling like a hundred people every year to finalize the date.
- barkingmoonbat, on 10/13/2007, -16/+1Seriously, who in their right mind would give a *****?
- barkingmoonbat, on 10/20/2007, -28/+5Now, if Muslims could only abandon their religion (cult) so that the world can live in peace without their backwards, 7th Century barbarian culture!
I mean, what kind of brainless morons would willingly follow a religion which reveres a man who, when he was in his 50s, raped a 9 year old girl?- lemac, on 10/20/2007, -1/+10I hope you will one day take your head out of your rear end and pick up a book and learn the truth about our religion and probably your own if you have one. Stop watching too much of the FOX channel.
- barkingmoonbat, on 10/13/2007, -12/+2Dude, I didn't learn about Islam from Fox News. I don't even have satellite TV. I know about Islam because I had the misfortune to be born into a Muslim family, a situation which was rectified by my parents leaving the religion then having to move to the other end of the country to escape the death threats from their former friends and even family members. So perhaps I know just a tad more about it that you, you brainless, brainwashed Islamic twerp.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/16/2007, -1/+6Interesting your comment history would show otherwise.

- barkingmoonbat, on 10/20/2007, -16/+3Oooops, I'm getting dugg down for suggesting that raping 9 year old girls might just be a bad thing and certainly not befitting a "prophet". This place is really going down hill.
- revjustin2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You still dumb.
- barkingmoonbat, on 10/13/2007, -5/+2Well if you think it acceptable to rape 9 year old girls then I hope you get put in prison, and soon.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/13/2007, -2/+3There was a documentary on UK TV (Panorama) that showed that this sort of thing was quite common back then and not something exclusive to Muslims but also to Jewish and Christian people. This is why it's not a great issue as it was common place. In fact the UK Monarchy were also large culprits of this primarily to keep the Monarchy within the family.
The same documentary also remarked that Arranged Marriages in Indian communities and "Sex Before Marriage" will be sniggered upon after another century, but right now people are fine with those practices.
- revjustin2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You still dumb.
- kayid, on 10/13/2007, -2/+5apparently you know nothing about islam.

- Daiken, on 10/13/2007, -0/+5I use to have this problem, but I stopped eating as much this year after breaking fast. Lost a few founds luckily :D
- pintomp3, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3it's all the gorging at iftar. and usually iftar is a bunch of fried foods.

- 3ammo, on 10/13/2007, -0/+6You are right hiPpymIck this Eid is the one after Ramadan. There is another Eid which happens when the Muslims perform their Pilgrimage to Mekka.
Happy Eid... - AslamAli, on 10/13/2007, -0/+9Eid Mubarak, Happy Eid to All!
- Quidam, on 10/13/2007, -0/+7Eid Mubarak!!!!!
- pintomp3, on 10/20/2007, -0/+10ugh, so much bigotry in this thread. it's like having a hanukkah thread filled with anti-semitic rants. it's sad how accepted and widespread islamophobia has become. eid mubarak. enjoy the day with family and friends and don't let these idiots ruin the festivities.

- Peace - patience, on 10/13/2007, -11/+4Try saying Merry Christmas in Saudi Arabia! What about Happy Easter! Muslims are in denial: There is a seedy, radical fringe to your religion that you ignore. Until you convince these groups to be tolerant, you will always be in connflict with other groups. We accept you; many of you don't accept us. A nation with many Christians also has mosques. A nation with many muslims often has few or no churches. TOLERANCE is a 2 Way Street.
- bashpk, on 10/13/2007, -2/+5I recall seeing a good deal of TV coverage of Christmas in Pakistan and no one had any problem with that. Of course don't let me stop you from enforcing stereotypes.
- patience, on 10/13/2007, -4/+2Stereotypes? Try go opening a church in Saudi Arabia. See how that turns out.
Or much less, bring a suitcase of bibles to the airport.- bashpk, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2I was showing you one (among many that others have shown) exception to what you've said. There are MANY churches in MANY muslim countries and they have no problem with that. Yet you choose to use Saudi Arabia to prove your point.
- patience, on 10/13/2007, -4/+2Stereotypes? Try go opening a church in Saudi Arabia. See how that turns out.
- issawiah, on 10/13/2007, -1/+4I went to Egypt during Christmas and there we many celebrations...And Cairo has some of the largest and oldest Churches in the world. EID Mubarak to all!!!
- scamper22, on 10/15/2007, -1/+4With the exception of Saudi and a couple other crazy regimes, most muslims and even muslim countries have no problem with you saying merry christmas. We actually welcome it. I'd much rather a christian say merry christmas than happy holidays. You're darn sure, I'm wishing people 'eid mubarak'
To ponder your little rage against muslims, no muslim in the United States has ever asked for a ban on merry christmas or the lords prayer in schools.
I'm a muslim in Canada and see this all the time: Christians complaining about the destruction of Christianity in 'their' country. Sadly, the threat to Christianity is not from Muslims. It's your own 'white secularists' if I may generalize that do so.
Of course in Ontario, christians would rather ruin themselves than see anything help muslims.
As now, the catholic schools and several other christian schools are publically funded. Yet when muslims asked for the same right, suddenly the wolves came out and now in a few years, chances are christian schools will no longer be funded.
The same goes for religious arbitration. Something that both christians and jews enjoyed for many years in Ontario.
Muslims ask for the same right and of course, the government had to revoke the right to religious arbitration all together...denying it now to christians and jews.
No ones going to excuse Saudi. Even us muslims think that place is messed. But how about you focus on Christianity in the united states first. - mislam, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Most muslim countries do celebrate Christmas. We used to get 25th December off as national holiday in Bangladesh (85%+ muslims). I think you are stereotyping to extreme. If you step out of the US once in a while you will be surprised to see how big the world really is and how much is really there for you to learn. Don't watch FoxNews. :)
- bashpk, on 10/13/2007, -2/+5I recall seeing a good deal of TV coverage of Christmas in Pakistan and no one had any problem with that. Of course don't let me stop you from enforcing stereotypes.

Eid mubarak to everyone.
Peace!!!! - patience, on 10/16/2007, -9/+2What about Gays? Any mosques that accepts Gays out there? Many Christian churches and nations do. Gay in Iran, Saudi, Egypt = Whipping or Hanging.
Get into the 21st century, guys. Stop denying that your religion is in many ways incompatible with modern way of life.
Neo-cons are right:
Radical Muslims want to slit our throats into the 7th century.
We should act first and dynamite Islam into the 21st century. - EgyptianWarrior, on 10/13/2007, -3/+2Next time try and be a bit more descriptive in the title. I thought this was going to be an article about Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosni_Mubarak
