I'll miss you bro - illinest, on 05/26/2009, -2/+78When I served in Pearl Harbor I'd often seen that rusted out shell of a ship but I never knew the history until today. I'm real glad I got to see that and read about it.
- Shawn4168, on 05/26/2009, -3/+42I'm no fan of Obama, but can we please just observe one Memorial Day without bringing up politics or trying to push personal agendas?
- TheSeanFace, on 05/26/2009, -2/+37I have no idea why you are getting buried. Boston.com has to be one of the best sites that gets submitted to Digg, always amazing photos and informative tags on them.
I agree with 'bighair' above, #5 is a very touching photo, shows so much emotion. - martoq, on 05/26/2009, -0/+34Plato.
- suntzusputnik, on 05/26/2009, -1/+34there's no echo if it's silent
- cslawren, on 05/26/2009, -0/+31Photos were great. On a side note, I had no idea that you could actually see ship remains at Normandy. That will sure be interesting to see when I go there some day.
- RedHawk911, on 05/26/2009, -15/+42I love Boston.com Also, amazing pictures.
- mraymond80, on 05/26/2009, -6/+33As always, amazing & powerful photography from Boston.com
- UrbanVeniVici, on 05/26/2009, -0/+27And when he gets to heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell, one more Soldier reporting Sir, I've served my time in hell...
Very touching photo's well put together, hits close to home when you know so many men and women serving. Lets hope they come home safe! - tradderjohn, on 05/26/2009, -0/+26In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- CopyCat138, on 05/26/2009, -0/+16#10 - I flew with 1st LT Landaker in Iraq. In fact I was on an advance party heading home the day is CH-46 was shot down. There were 6 others on the Helo when it was shot down. All lost their lives. Their mission in Iraq was to fly casualty evacuations. Each and everyone of them were amazing people and I'm proud to have flown with each one of them.
In memory of the men and women of HMM-364: Theirs was an honorable duty, flying into harms way day in and day out, and paying the ultimate sacrifice.

- Nar1117, on 05/26/2009, -0/+15Every Memorial Day, I can't help but get a little emotional when I see pictures of those who have lost a loved one. These pictures are no different. Its hard not to cry when you see so much emotion in one set of pictures. Good job Boston.com.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+14It's an American memorial.
- jibajaba, on 05/26/2009, -1/+14Yeah, #5 stands out.
- btc08, on 05/26/2009, -0/+13It will always be "too soon."
- bmcnally, on 05/26/2009, -0/+12An LST explosion is not significant enough to be in a history course.
I highly doubt illinest was talking about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. - danjal, on 05/26/2009, -8/+20War, war never changes..
- illinest, on 05/26/2009, -0/+11Don't be ignorant matude. Navy ships are usually sunk to the bottom of the ocean when their service is over. There's no environmental concern once the fuel is gone, and from the looks of the explosion there probably wasn't any fuel left after that. All either burnt up or long since dissipated into the ocean. West Loch is where we did weapon loadouts before deployment. It's a very secure location and the public has no access to it. The only people who see that are people like me who volunteered to serve and thus appreciate the reminder. I don't appreciate your misguided sanctimonious crap.
- jmt612, on 05/26/2009, -2/+13Very saddening and heart felt pictures. Seriously, if you feel compassion for human beings and Americas alike, you will enjoy this slideshow.
- browwiw, on 05/26/2009, -0/+10Because it's a gravesite.
- wkeown, on 05/26/2009, -4/+14These pictures help put things in perspective.
- cslawren, on 05/26/2009, -0/+10No, not that one. Picture 19. It was taken at Utah Beach.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -1/+11Couple tear-jerkers in there. The wife lying next to the headstone was probably the most dramatic.
- Mjuboy, on 05/26/2009, -8/+17Beautiful collection of touching photographs...

I remember seeing that story on the front page of the Plain Dealer yesterday. Quite a touching and inspirational story. I wish that picture of him in the lawn chair had made this photo set. - MrInfallible, on 05/26/2009, -3/+11Yeah look how happy all these people seem in the pictures. Looks like a wild party!
- akaakc, on 05/26/2009, -1/+9wut
- sx66gns, on 05/26/2009, -4/+12/Agree w/ bighair.
- illinest, on 05/26/2009, -1/+8I want to clarify that I'm NOT talking about the attack on Pearl Harbor. I'm not a history expert but I DO know what happened that day. December 7th.
I was talking about the history of that specific rusted hull. - FromAShoe, on 05/26/2009, -0/+7It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the soldier,
who salutes the flag,
who serves under the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.

God bless America, and those who have fought for her. Our thoughts are prayers are with you and your families. - bpeacock22, on 05/26/2009, -1/+8Yes. #5 and #12 are both haunting and beautiful.
- NuclearDruid, on 05/26/2009, -0/+7Shut the ***** up RealHyper. Even I am semi-conservative, but radical ***** ups like you just piss me off... almost as much as the religious ones. You're not doing any good crying foul. Sit back and go for the ***** ride, because there is jack ***** you can do about it. Complaining on digg will get you nowhere instantly.
- Jashobeam5, on 05/26/2009, -2/+9Only if the question is, "What is France best at?"
