Man Sues Doctors For Amputating Penis
consumerist.com — What part of "circumcision" was unclear? That's basically what a Kentucky man and his wife are asking of two doctors who cut off the man's penis while he was under the knife.

- Asshate, on 09/25/2008, -5/+25I woke up this morning with a bad hangover
And my penis was missing again.
This happens all the time.
It's detachable.
This comes in handy a lot of the time.
I can leave it home, when I think
it's gonna get me in trouble,
or I can rent it out, when I don't need it.
But now and then I go to a party, get drunk,
and the next morning I can't for the life of me
remember what I did with it.
First I looked around my apartment, and I couldn't find it.
So I called up the place where the party was,
they hadn't seen it either.
I asked them to check the medicine cabinet
'cause for some reason I leave it there sometimes
But not this time.
So I told them if it pops up to let me know.
I called a few people who were at the party,
but they were no help either.
I was starting to get desperate.
I really don't like being without my penis for too long.
It makes me feel like less of a man,
and I really hate having to sit down
every time I take a leak.
After a few hours of searching the house,
and calling everyone I could think of,
I was starting to get very depressed,
so I went to the Kiev, and ate breakfast.
Then, as I walked down Second Avenue
towards St. Mark's Place,
where all those people sell used books
and other junk on the street,
I saw my penis lying on a blanket
next to a broken toaster oven.
Some guy was selling it.
I had to buy it off him.
He wanted twenty-two bucks, but I
talked him down to seventeen.
I took it home, washed it off,
and put it back on. I was happy again. Complete.
People sometimes tell me I should get
it permanently attached,
but I don't know.
Even though sometimes it's a pain in the ass,
I like having a detachable penis.- Mujokan, on 09/25/2008, -1/+0I haven't heard that song since about 1993.

- snackdrag, on 09/25/2008, -1/+1Depending on the type of cancer, if the doctor had already cut into him for the circumcision, he risked spreading the cancer cells through the blood stream and healing process if he did not remove the whole area.
if that's what the doctor truly saw, that would explain his actions. if he had" Sewed the man back up and asked for consent" the cancer would have spread as if it had matastisized. just FYI.

- cheeseplease, on 09/25/2008, -2/+33I like how the news is not "Docter amputates penis instead of circumcision" but "Man sues doctors for amputating penis". Like the sueing part is the most important part of the story.
- catxors, on 09/25/2008, -1/+3Uh, journalists try to report facts. The lawsuit is a fact; the penis amputation is only an allegation.
- troye, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3@catxors: Well somehow he doesn't have a penis anymore, so I would say his penis is amputated, but who is responsible, or something like that.
- DickyT83, on 09/25/2008, -7/+2Funny, first thing that came to mind when you said support was an athletic supporter. Poor guy.
- adrenalmedulla9, on 09/25/2008, -10/+5Agreed. This is just redickulous.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 09/25/2008, -1/+3Yeah don't put me on that jury.
- DrDigg, on 09/25/2008, -0/+7There is only two situations I could see this being justified. Many cancers bleed quite significantly when biopsied. If there was a large amount of bleeding and the only way to stop it was to remove the cancer. Otherwise wake the guy up tell him he has cancer and schedule the surgery the next day. The other is if the cancer was in the the original reason for the circumcision and the guy was trying to get clean margins. If so the consent would have included removing all of the cancer.
Bizarre.- dougmc, on 09/25/2008, -0/+5I suspect you're probably on to something.
Most doctors are probably very aware of how important our penises are to us, and are aware of how quickly we'd sue them if our penis was amputated without our consent. The doctor probably thought he had consent (and it wouldn't surprise me if the consent form DID give him consent, even if the patient didn't understand what we was signing.)
Also, an adult getting a circumcision is rather rare. Usually it's a religious thing, but sometimes it's done due to cancer. I guess a few cases are for asthetic reasons, though those can't be very common at all.
Sure, the doctor may have found cancer on the penis. But cancer is usually slow -- he could have stitched the guy up, woken him up, gotten his consent, and then cut that bad boy off all in the same day.
Perhaps the doctor was confused about what the surgery was really about? That seems unlikely -- when I've seen doctors do surgeries, they are VERY specific about what they're doing, and they even ask you to verify it, with witnesses, right before they put you under. They ask YOU to write on the limb to be worked on.
I don't think we have the whole story ... - musicbear, on 09/25/2008, -1/+7dougmc wrote: "I don't think we have the whole story ..."
Uh... this is the consumerist, it goes without saying. Anything you read on the consumerist usually leaves out the other half of the story that logically explains the ZOMG!!! story you're currently reading.

- je12u, on 09/25/2008, -4/+2Same here. This is crazy!! That doc had some balls to just go ahead and do such a thing...I mean c'mon doc, use some brain! My neck went limp when I read this and all I could do was shake my head. I think we should all donate to erect a monument for this brave man while he goes through this hard time. Seriously...anyone who's an organ donor is okay in my book.
- zombies187, on 09/25/2008, -2/+2This kind of thing is exactly why we need the ability to sue doctors for malpractice. Does it make rates go up? Yes. The important thing is my penis goes up. The courts are the ONLY line of defense in a deregulated society. In fact, there are only two kinds of legal systems: regulated and litigious. Having neither leaves a state of anarchy. I'll accept either one. But not neither.
- worldchanger, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2I fully agree.

- coreyb, on 09/25/2008, -14/+21As per the article, he had dick cancer, but only consented to have his foreskin removed. RTFA before you comment...
- VerticalEvent, on 09/25/2008, -4/+12I think you need to read before commenting - he's asking why he was getting a circumcision done at his age, not why his penis was removed.
- SammyJr, on 09/25/2008, -1/+9That still doesn't explain the circumcision. Was the cancer on his foreskin? Unless the cancer is on his foreskin, circumcision would not remove the cancer and therefore was an inappropriate treatment.
- ganjamonsta, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1the guy did not know he had cancer. he just wanted a ***** circumcision. it was his choice, whether it be for cosmetic reasons or otherwise.
i don't understand why you are all having such a big problem with this.
- nomadxx7, on 09/25/2008, -1/+9@coreyb
You might want to re-read the article. It said that they guy went in to have a circumcision and upon looking the doctor noticed the man had penile cancer. He (the Dr.) decided to remove the penis even though he only had consent to do remove the foreskin (circumcision).
Sornos point is very valid. Why would this guy go in for a circumcision at that age?- dougmc, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6The usual reason is religious -- that the person wants to join the Jewish faith, and Jews are circumcised. (And they're not the only faith that does it.)
Could also be that his wife/girlfriend/whatever doesn't like uncut men. Or he didn't like being teased as a kid. Or doesn't like having to do a little extra cleaning. Or perhaps the foreskin was infected, perhaps it had cancer?
There's lots of possible reasons.
- dougmc, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6The usual reason is religious -- that the person wants to join the Jewish faith, and Jews are circumcised. (And they're not the only faith that does it.)
- TurboTex, on 09/25/2008, -8/+2The foreskin can actually grow back together leaving it unable to pull over the head. Urine can then get trapped in between the foreskin and head. After extended periods of time the urine can eat away at the head and cause extreme pain and the only real solution is getting rid of his helmet.
- BuLong, on 09/25/2008, -1/+2Also masturbation can turn you blind and is a known medical cause for hairy palms...
- GiggleStick, on 09/25/2008, -1/+2I can barely see what you wrote, BuLong. And it's hard to type with these fur pads all over my hands.

A guy loses his penis. That is it for him. That's it; down for the count he is.
- collution, on 09/25/2008, -1/+19He can't anymore :/.
- shadowman99, on 09/25/2008, -33/+25In this case it's important to RTFA. The man had cancer on his penis. The doctors did what they had to to save the his life.
As difficult as it might be to imagine life without sex, there are dying people who wish they could trade problems.- Shadoblak, on 09/25/2008, -5/+121Show me a medical journal chronicling an explosive penis cancer that requires immediate removal of the entire organ without patient consent. Maybe it would have been his choice to let it go untreated, maybe he has personal views, maybe HE LIKED HIS PENIS. The doctor didn't have the authority.
- sTiKyt, on 09/25/2008, -2/+6Lol, explosive penis cancer XD
- Angostura, on 09/25/2008, -4/+6It's just possible that during surgery the surgeons realised that the tumour was about to metastasise. In that situation, you don't want individual tumour cells getting into the blood-stream and invading the rest of the body with secondary growths.
- cozmoz365, on 09/25/2008, -2/+4@Agostura: I would rather take the risk, he could have always undergone chemotherapy after the operation to catch the individual cells in his blood stream.
- nomadxx7, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6Sometimes the problem with something malignant is that it may spread. By cutting into the foreskin the doctor could have presented an opportunistic infection for the cancer to spread. Not saying the doctor could should have done it but he may have done it so the guy didnt have the cancer spread to the surrounding muscle tissue and whatnot
- Asshate, on 09/25/2008, -4/+38A life without penis is a life not worth living!

- Navicerts, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3Well, it doesn't make it right. However, you can understand how the misunderstanding might have occurred(at least there was *some* reason to remove it). Pretty big error though.
- gritta, on 09/25/2008, -2/+18It's not quite as simple as "death or no penis". It's more like "a few years with penis vs a lot of years without a penis".
- locojones, on 09/25/2008, -3/+41Shadowman -
Perhaps you need to RTFA. Nowhere in the article did it mention that the cancer was life-threatening, or that it had to be excised without further consideration. What the article did say, and what you completely discount, is that doctors only had consent to remove foreskin, discovered cancer, and unilaterally decided (without even bothering to get input from the family, who are the only people that have the legal authority to give consent) to remove his penis. They didn't biopsy the cancer, they didn't test it to see if it was malignant or benign, they didn't do anything.
It was their duty to immediately sew him up, terminate the procedure, and notify the family and let them make the decision that only they can make to affect their health and well-being. If that was to wait and go elsewhere to get a second opinion, it's their decision to make. But that didn't happen. These doctors jumped the gun, ruined this man's life, ruined the life of his wife, and they deserve to pay.- skidme, on 09/25/2008, -14/+3LMAO!

- soomprimal, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2Wow I have no idea why people are digging you up but nobody has a right to make a medical decision for you unless it is expressly authorized or you are within moments of death (which neither here was the case.) Let the dude wake up, tell him he has cancer, and go about it the legal and moral way- you don't just lop something off as bonus surgery- WTF?
- Shadoblak, on 09/25/2008, -5/+121Show me a medical journal chronicling an explosive penis cancer that requires immediate removal of the entire organ without patient consent. - phanatical, on 09/25/2008, -15/+1I guess his foreskin was so long that they had to cut off his whole dick in order to circumsized it LMAO
- BitKid, on 09/25/2008, -3/+12Isn't a circumcision something you could have done with out being knocked out? Local anaesthetic seems like kind of thing that would be used in this situation.
- christophelyon, on 09/25/2008, -1/+18According to the video on the site, the lawsuit is also on the fact that the man did not consent to general anaesthesia...
- SammyJr, on 09/25/2008, -2/+5Usually no, because its extremely painful to have part of your dick whacked off.
People think its simple and easy because they don't use much of anything with babies... but babies can't fight back when they're strapped down and someone starts cutting on them.- Suricou, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6Of course it's painful. I've no doubt it's extremally painful for the babies, too. That's what the local is for. I've been under local anasthetic, for a cyst removal. Had a chunk cut out of my leg and sewn back up, and I didn't feel a thing.
- BuLong, on 09/25/2008, -1/+3Babies don't get local either, sucks to have sadistic parents.

- notalayperson, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1I saw in surgery an amputation of a penis. Basically, they remove the penis, make an opening at the urethral area (rather like a vagina), and the guy has to sit down to pee in future.
- thushan, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2Well as Larry David informed us, there are benefits to peeing sitting down... Though, he'd have to make sure the seat isnt up when he goes to pee... might take some getting used to.
http://www.5min.com/Video/Larry-David-on-Why-Men-S ...
- Its more comfortable
- You dont have to turn the light on in the middle of the night and wake up...
- AND YOU GET TO READ!!!
"hey buddy, when your peeing all over your shoes, I'm learning something."
Having said all that, I wouldn't want to be in his shoes, poor guy..
"Kevin George, the plaintiff's attorney, said [Dr.] Patterson amputated the organ after finding cancer, but he only had consent to remove the foreskin."
Malpractice indeed. - Suricou, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2An artifical penis would easy to make. Non-functional for sex, but psychologically useful. Nothing but a one-piece silicone structure and some attachments. But, I don't imagine this happens often enough that any company has reason to invest in the R&D cost and the required testing and legal matters for FDA approval.
- thushan, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2Well as Larry David informed us, there are benefits to peeing sitting down... Though, he'd have to make sure the seat isnt up when he goes to pee... might take some getting used to.
- IamNOTmrT, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6This would've been a classic "smile, you're on candid camera" moment
- xeyne, on 09/25/2008, -0/+4but now maybe he'll get a new penis, that was conveniently available from an unnamed/unknown donor and will become the main char in an over-used plot line o_O
- walshgopher, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1I wonder how his wife would feel about a donor...
- nemrel, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1Having sex with a donor penis. Is that technically cheating?

- error2k2, on 09/25/2008, -0/+7The fortune saved on tissues and condoms still doesn't make up for it...
- matt2m, on 09/25/2008, -6/+5Dude the ***** money could never make my life feel right after that. I read the article the should have just removed the foreskin and maybe a biopsy. Then ask him what to do when he woke up. This is beyond malpractice dear god I am going to have a hard time sleeping tonight. If i was him I would shoot the damn doctor maybe shoot his dick off and let him live, then shoot myself damn I can't contemplate this.
Who else "checked" them self when they read this.- amoirae, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1Hell... I checked three other guys to make sure it isn't contagious.
It isn't.
*whew*

- vwilsonuk, on 09/25/2008, -1/+2The two doctors involved here should be fortunate if they escape custodial sentences, let alone ever work in medicine again.
