- Surferess, on 10/22/2008, -3/+232Aren't employees wonderful? You can almost always count on them to do something that will make you liable.
- samyoungguitar, on 10/22/2008, -4/+212WTF?! They have a "generic code" for "Dumb N***er"??
- BigCalhoun, on 10/23/2008, -1/+200'Hoping to get answers about how the words got on the receipt, the Slaters returned to the store the next day. But they said they never got a full explanation, only that the employee entered a generic code.
"And it pulled up six or seven different choices, and the choice that she (the employee) chose was the very last choice," said Slater's father, Keith.'
1. Cheap Jew
2. Shady Towelhead
3. Shifty Chink
4. Dirty Mexican
5. Smelly Dothead
6. White Trash
7. Dumb *****
WTF!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? - hillkiwi, on 10/23/2008, -9/+201FTA: The receipt, which shows "Cust: Dumb" and then the n-word
The 'n-word'? Are we five years old?
I agree there's no place in modern society for racism, but if you're writing a story about someone being called a ***** it's okay to write out the word '*****'. - steelsmack, on 10/22/2008, -11/+164Everyone who plays the race card constantly, THIS IS ACTUAL RACISM...
- barrakuda, on 10/23/2008, -5/+141They fired the guy, why boycott the store?
- BaseballGuyCAA, on 10/22/2008, -3/+130So you're a numb digger?
- reyoo30309, on 10/22/2008, -0/+117"The Slaters also filed a complaint with mall security."
And the mall security did what, had them arrested? - Chairboy, on 10/23/2008, -1/+116Mall Security asked the store to "Move along, sir" and added "No skateboarding!" to emphasize it.
- ClarkNoHeart, on 10/23/2008, -1/+116I like how everyone keeps referring to the terminated employee as a male. Even though, if you read the article, it was a female.
What, girls can't be racist? - thebza451, on 10/23/2008, -24/+136i don't get it, how'd he get a receipt for the shoes if he stole them?
- KevekKerinth, on 10/22/2008, -11/+109Very interesting article, and sad.
It's sad they lost sleep over it, I think that's a bit much, but I'm definitely glad they pursued explanation which hopefully lead in the employee's termination - slopoke, on 10/22/2008, -2/+94The focus of the article is on what the employee selected to place on the receipt. I think the bigger question is, why was the choice on the store's list anyway?
Also, "Did you just say mind bottling?" - twp219, on 10/22/2008, -1/+90wtf...you have a south park avatar
- FritzKatz, on 10/22/2008, -2/+88Result of an idiot, now an unemployed idiot.

"On Tuesday, Genesco, which owns Journeys, released this statement:
"While we are continuing to investigate this incident, it now appears that an employee in one of our stores entered highly inappropriate statements in a form used to process a merchandise return. Needless to say, such an act was not authorized by Journeys, and will not be tolerated. This employee has been terminated. - bambooanime, on 10/23/2008, -2/+72I work for a different Journeys, and you have to manually enter in a customer's name & info when you do a return or an exchange. The computer won't let you otherwise. So what happened is that they had to have typed in "N*gger" for the last name and then add "Dumb" for their first name - manually. It's not in my customer database. I checked out of morbid curiosity.
- Vindicoth, on 10/22/2008, -2/+67"Yeah, mind-bottling. You know, when things are so crazy it gets your thoughts all trapped, like in a bottle?"
- floridiot2, on 10/22/2008, -5/+67Wait, so there's an actual choice on the computer for printing that on the receipt when ringing someone up? Mind bottling.
- scabbers, on 10/23/2008, -0/+60Terminated means killed, not unemployed. Never mess with Journeys.
- flidge, on 10/23/2008, -1/+57the story is amazing on 2 levels. one this stuff still happens and two, you cant even reproduce the word ***** when conveying the sorry situation.
- JDLade, on 10/23/2008, -3/+58they're organizing a store boycott? please...
its one idiot ***** employee who they fired already, whats the point? - inactive, on 10/23/2008, -11/+63Of course the activist at the end of the article is saying that the employee being fired and the official apology from the store "isn't enough." So tell me, Mr Black Rights boycott activist, what do you expect them to do? Arrest the employee and pay all black people 5 thousand dollars? Maybe set the employee on fire?
- cptshamrock, on 10/22/2008, -4/+53South Park Reference
- floridiot2, on 10/23/2008, -3/+51You win
- Chairboy, on 10/23/2008, -5/+50The employee was fired, which is very appropriate. The store owner personally apologized to the customer, which is also good. What I'm confused about, however, is the assertion from the customer at the end of the article that this "wasn't enough" and that they would be boycotting the store.
What, ah, _would be enough? "The owner of Journeys then announced that they would be funding research into building a time machine to make it possible to travel back to the 1500s so that slave trading could be prevented before it was established in what became the United States." - Strongwings, on 10/23/2008, -10/+51Maybe if African Americans quit using it themselves, it would start to reflect more that it's hurtful to the rest? Just maybe?
- RcFromTwitter, on 10/10/2009, -3/+37He stole that too.
- N00F, on 10/23/2008, -1/+33African Americans? Were they from Africa? Here in Canada, we refer to them as people or black people. They are not African-Canadian. If they were, they would be called Immigrant. Stop using the African-anything. It perpetuates the race separation. They were Americans. Black-Americans, if you must.
I am not Inuit-Canadian, I am a Canadian. - lisaawesome, on 10/23/2008, -5/+37No white people only use it around other white people because we don't want to get our asses beaten.
- inactive, on 10/23/2008, -2/+33THE SHERIFF IS A NI- BONNGGGGGG!
He says the sheriff is near! - mmittimm, on 10/23/2008, -2/+33Of course this was completely despicable but boycotting the store? Really? They fired the guy, what more can management do?
- inactive, on 10/23/2008, -0/+30Hmm, I think that employee 's gonna have to kiss Jesse Jackson ass for this one
- john2kx, on 10/23/2008, -4/+33The generic codes are probably created by the employees.
- shutaro, on 10/22/2008, -2/+30The only solution is to eliminate them entirely!
- Neiby, on 10/23/2008, -2/+29If you think that's overreacting, wait until Jesse Jackson gets involved.
- ashfish, on 10/23/2008, -4/+31Yeah that's the little gem that blew my mind. I can see some ***** hick typing that into the section, but this was an actual OPTION set up in their system?!?! You cannot tell me that a cashier (assuming its just a cashier and not a manager since it wasn't specified) would have the authority to input a change like that into their system. If they do, well there's a BIG problem right there, and if not, I'd be figuring out who else in that store needs to be canned as well.
- shutaro, on 10/22/2008, -11/+36Meh... The race card has been played so often that, as a digger, I've become bit numb to it all.
- brianhood, on 10/23/2008, -7/+31god bless America...
- Markpdotcom, on 10/23/2008, -2/+25Thats right, I couldn't believe they were wasting the FBI's time with this!
Civil rights? C'mon! - fegul, on 10/23/2008, -2/+24What I would expect them to do is find out how such a code even got into their system to begin with.
- Chompy, on 10/23/2008, -1/+22Oh I think we all know right where things are going when someone says that an apology and employee firing "i$n't enough".
- theonlywizdum, on 10/23/2008, -5/+24it's only hurtful if white people use it.
- ryan899, on 10/22/2008, -21/+40This mall is in a heavily white area of the Kansas City metro (republican Kansas) so it doesn't surprise me at all.
- GhostSmith, on 04/26/2009, -2/+21Figures, one guy is blatantly racist and another guy tries to be blatantly not racist.
- twiztidsinz, on 10/23/2008, -1/+20Nothing?
- pradvan, on 10/23/2008, -3/+21very good question
- AmyVernon, on 10/22/2008, -5/+23Exactly! Why was that a choice? Amazing.
- twiztidsinz, on 10/23/2008, -9/+26A wise man once said, "This job would be great if it wasn't for the ***** customers."
- inactive, on 10/23/2008, -0/+17You said the n-word!
Begone foul demon! -
