Judge: 1st Amendment allows posting SSNs of state officials
arstechnica.com — A federal judge has ruled that the First Amendment protects the right of Virginia privacy activist Betty Ostergren to publish the Social Security numbers of public officials on her website. She posted the numbers to protest the Virginia government's policy of posting public real estate records online that included people's Social Security numbers.

- Mcwop, on 08/29/2008, -0/+7Word up! Politicians need to eat their own cooking!
- foresmac, on 08/29/2008, -0/+9"It also mandated that clerks redact Social Security numbers within three years, but only if the legislature provided the funds required to do so—then failed to come up with the necessary funds. Instead, the legislature changed the law to prohibit private parties from distributing individuals' Social Security numbers even if they are simply reposting the very same records available from the government's own website."
Classic "Do as I say, not as I do." Just ***** redact the SSNs already! - Morac, on 08/29/2008, -0/+8As usual, unless a politician is affected by something (or given money by someone affected by something), they don't care about it.

why can't "we the people" do the same ! - jeffiek, on 08/29/2008, -0/+5Do you get it now? The government is NOT your friend.
Thank God* for people like her with the nerve to stand up to them, and a special thank you to her. By the way, one of the government's promises when SS first started was that the number would never be used for identification. Nonsense like this is what makes the Libertarians want to handcuff the government.
And they call us crazy. Go figure.

- sliksta, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1This lady is an American Hero. She is fighting for your rights people. Against a crooked government(they all are). Sad that even the crooked legislature passed a law to trample this lady's rights.
