The people who criticize "hyper-sensitivity," and who take the approach that their lives are not affected can only do so because they don't see their lives as being affected. The SoCal suburbs where you live are not a hotbed of racial violence. You are not in a situation where your wife can be beaten to death for dating a white guy. Alot of people seem to be under this misconception, free speech has limits. Libel is illegal, as is screaming fire in a crowded building. Try going on an airplane and saying you have a bomb.
Free speech is a great thing, it's very nice that we can criticize our government as much as we want, but there are many things that we never have been able to, nor never will be able to say.

You're right that context and consequences is exactly the issue here. That's actually the point I was trying to make with my sloppy comment. "Free Speech" does not extend to every time and place nor to individual reactions to your speech. In fact all it says is the government shouldn't censor unpopular beliefs. If someone stands outside my house shouting racial slurs, I am not only justified in taking legal action, I am also pretty well covered by "fighting words" provisions if I come out and beat their head in with a pipe.
Many people seem to think the First Amendment lets a person say anything to anyone at any time, without consequences, and with the blessing of the constitution. This is absolutely not true.

Those stereotypes (agree with them or not) remind me a lot more of the Nazi regime during WWII than the Nazi propaganda that tended to claim Jews were: to blame for the loss of WWI, rich and powerful businessmen that kept ordinary germans poor, corrupt and completely profit orientated.
