Google Maps Disease Outbreaks
abcnews.go.com — A new website, HealthMap, addresses that challenge by siphoning up text from Google News, the World Health Organization and online discussion groups, then filtering it and boiling it down into mapped data that researchers -- and the public -- can use to track new disease outbreaks, region by region.

- The2ndAct, on 07/09/2008, -1/+26I saw the word outbreak and expected something to do with Zombies. I'm a bit disappointed.
oh, and here's a link to the actual webpage that this ABCNews article is talking about: http://healthmap.org- SuperTonic, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2I'm not, zombies scare the effing crap outta me. I'd be fine with smallpox or leprosy.
- yamikaze, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1The zombie tracking part is probably still in beta. Google just has to win the bid against Yahoo! Inc. for the acquisition of Umbrella Corporation so they can do real-time testing.
- metroidragon, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Holy crap, the was the only reason I click on that, hoping to see a Zombie outbreak.
well, not exactly hoping, but it would still be cool... right? :(
- systempunk, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2interesting...
- ajmunson, on 07/10/2008, -1/+9Did anybody else read that and think there was something called the "Google Maps" Disease that is just starting to spread?
- trekie1701, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Quick the news media is lying to us a Google Map Disease has broken out and caused people to walk aimlessly and ask if you want something something, the somethings they suggest always have to do with the person they ask almost if they we powered by adsense. This news report is brought to you be those who believe Ron Paul had a living chance in hell of becoming President.
- loopyloopy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1yes i had visions of a virus that was slowly eating up the maps
- Sererena, on 07/10/2008, -1/+8Reading the headline made me think that there was an outbreak of Google Maps Disease!

- mikeophile, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3What's with major news outlets like ABC who post articles about a site, but never link to them in the article?
- Enigmocracy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1They do... healthmap.org
- lololwut, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Useful in the event of a Solanum outbreak, provided the google employees are still alive.
- yamikaze, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2They'll probably survive thanks to the armored shelters Google provided as part of their employee benefits. They had to cut down on daycare funding so they would have enough budget just for this.
- wildfire, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4Success! I've finally put myself on the map!
- Garganturat, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Sweet, no disease in Quebec :D
- sys9five, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2Dont you love how there are stories on major news sites talking about some website, yet they dont actually link to the website? Good job.
- oslointhesummer, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I can't imagine this system accurately predicting the severity of an outbreak if it's based off of news coverage. A staph outbreak at a local high school will get more coverage than the next (or possibly ongoing) epidemics of cholera in some third world country.
- ut2k4king, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1What, Google gives you a Disease Outbreak map and there are only TWO comments with zombies in them? At least ask them to put random flags in Eastern Europe and Africa in homage to Resident Evil.
- hinmanj, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Track the tomatoes!
- spaceman84, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Google is ready for the coming Zombie Apocalypse. Are you?

- jorgio, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0I was actually on may way to make a zombie comment just to find it had been already done, let the zombie preparations begin!
- yuutokun, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Funny, there's a huge crabs epidemic near my old university.
- kjcdude, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Dupe, this was posted yesterday....
- tapeworm77, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2This is great. If everyone starts freezing, walking backwards and killing themselves we can find a safe area thanks to Google.
