This is true more than, for example, in Europe where you are born into certain ethnicity and everyone else is kind of a guest. This is actually true in USA but to a much smaller degree. Sometimes white protestants act as if they are landlords in USA and everyone else has to adapt to be more like them.
But in story of immigrants has not been the one of coming across the "welcome" mat and receiving warm greeting. Immigrants then, and immigrants now have to fight for survival. Immigrants are not really integrated right away, but they form subcultures in USA which persist sometimes for generations. There are stereotypes and mistrust among different ethnicities for many years. What keeps us from killing each other is strong tradition of individual rights and responsibilities, strict adherence to the letter of the law, and good economy.
