- RonnieW, on 04/23/2009, -2/+33What a retarded system to use anyway...
Seriously, who thought it would be a good idea to use SMS for secure transactions. - rameznabel, on 04/23/2009, -4/+30i have Germany made one and the deal is 10k only and final , talking serious
- DimensionalPunk, on 04/23/2009, -2/+27It's made in Germany, you KNOW they always make good stuff.
- luke16, on 04/23/2009, -2/+27I'll take it!

Hello, Europe? I think I have something you may want, but it's gonna cost you....that's right--all the tea. - bencefeher, on 04/23/2009, -1/+20http://cgi.ebay.com/German-Manufactured-Nokia-1100 ...

Really... I hope people aren't taking this seriously - ImDumberThanU, on 04/23/2009, -2/+13I hate websites with word advertisements. Every time I scroll over a word, a massive ad gets in the way of the text. Buried for greedy website. You think PCMag.com would realize the annoying nature of those ads, and their ability to deter traffic. Short term thinking = long term loser.
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -2/+10Whoever wrote this article is a noob.
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 04/23/2009, -0/+7You're gonna love my strudel!
- draxenato, on 04/23/2009, -1/+7It's plausible. In the mid 90s I had an OKI 900 handset that I could put into "engineer mode". You entered a simple password (no mods required) and the handset would log onto the local cell in a diagnostic mode. You could scan every SMS that passed through that cell and monitor some, but not all, voice traffic. Usually people picking up their voicemail or speaking to their network provider. You could do other stuff as well, interrogate the cell for the number of phones currently connected to it, what other cells it was linked to, signal strength etc. ISTR some British journalists used one to get the goods on a (very) minor celeb / royal scandal at the time.
- himynameisedan, on 04/23/2009, -0/+5Send the seller this article, they're losing out on 25k here.
- DirtyVicar, on 04/23/2009, -1/+5I wonder why people can't hook up UHF radios to snag the SMS messages with some kind of demodulator and try to decrypt them with a PC or laptop. It can't possibly be that hard unless the encryption is ungodly. Using a jacked cell phone seems like stealing a Commodore 64 to play Impossible Mission instead of just running it on the VICE emulator.
- Supernova36, on 04/23/2009, -1/+5Those phones aren't that old, they're still sold in the UK, mainly to older people who aren't intersted in doing anything more than calling and texting.
I seriously doubt one sold for 25k. - Anand999, on 04/23/2009, -0/+4There are two problems with that approach:
1. You have to be relatively near to where the real owner of that number is in order to intercept the message.
2. You have to wait for the real owner to initiate a banking transaction to intercept the TAN and since these TANs are one time use anyway, it wouldn't help you much.
Using a phone to impersonate the real owner, however, lets you avoid both problems. You can initiate the TAN request whenever you want and actually use it for your own nefarious purpose, and you can do it from the comfort of home.
What I don't know is what would make this particular phone special... I'm guessing the author has some 1100's up on eBay and is trying to drum up some bids. - decker12, on 04/23/2009, -0/+4You never replied to Tony Carey? WTF, mate?!?
- HappyScrappy, on 04/23/2009, -1/+4The gangsters are getting ripped. SMS (like all of GSM) is encrypted, and the encryption is taken care of by the SIM. No phone is any better at grabbing messages not intended for it than any other.
It's incredibly unlikely that the rumored capabilities are true. - BoneheadFarker, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3Don't bother...the account was created today, includes random links in comments, and seems to be digging everything possible. I think we're looking at the next level of spammer...
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3You can tell the difference?
- xsecretfiles, on 04/23/2009, -4/+6I have one,
contact me......... - xmobuk, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2Doh!
This is the link:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.cellular.oki.90 ... - rnawky, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2In order to intercept wireless transmissions you need to spoof the SIM card and the IMEI of the phone if your service provider restricts your SIM to your device.
Extracting the Ki key from the SIM card is extremely difficult
"A realistic time for extracting the Ki from a SIM card is approximately 4-8 hours. There is 40% probability of damaging the card in the process. Additionally, the attacker must have pre-knowledge of the SIM card's PIN (CHV1)"
And if you don't know the PIN code, you get about 10 tries before the SIM cards security measures render the SIM permanently useless. - sbluetruck, on 04/24/2009, -0/+2they sell me things, why not complete the circle.
do you have anything against circles? - Ultrace, on 04/23/2009, -1/+3Dugg for the C64/VICE analogy, and picking an awesome game to do it with.
- xmobuk, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2Not really. That was back in the ETACS days. GSM is VERY different now.
Here is a usenet post I made way back in 1996 detailing using the 1130E (very similar to the 900) to monitor other phones.
(I feel all nostalgic) - enantiodromia, on 04/23/2009, -1/+3sounds like a hoax invented at a CuervoCon
- samespbn, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2NEWSFLASH: 4chan =/= digg
- Rikkochet, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1<sigh>
- egthareal, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2Ahhh remember when they used to "clone" cell-phones. That was funny.
- Unreal411, on 04/23/2009, -2/+3*****, i just recycled mine! thats what i get for recycling :(
- canchin, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1The guy at PC Mag needs to told that it is supposed to be on April 1, not April 21...or maybe he's just a tad dyslexic?
- e68895f, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1So mayby Nokia should reopen their germany-plant and start making serious money :-)
- benologist, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2Doesn't PayPal do something like that?
- heyuguuuuys, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1I remember when I had my old school 5110, it was easy to reprogram the phone to intercept messages, just put in a code and then the new phone number. For some reason I still remember the code to "hack" the phone.
*#639# - Walker2323, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Seller says he bought it in Bosnia, so who knows where it was made. Whatever. It's all ***** anyway.
- crashlock, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1SHHHNELLLLL!!!
- Anand999, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1The codes sent by SMS are only part of two factor authorization scheme. Bank of America has a similar system here in the US. Once I login to my account using my normal user ID and password, certain actions will require further authentication by sending me a code via SMS and requiring me to enter it in on the website. These are the ones I've run into:
1. Logging in from a computer without the right cookie
2. Adding new payees in bill pay
3. Add new transfer accounts
A thief would need to know my user ID and password and also be able to intercept my SMS messages to be able to do one of the above. - guitmusic11, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1Fake, but there is legitimacy in the illicit use of Nokia phones. I work in retail and for a long time we'd have problems with the sale of i believe it was the nokia 2126, granted the sales were from $5-15 not 25k euros.
- rnawky, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Oh haha, I didn't even look at the link let alone click it.
I just saw someone ignorant retard and wanted to correct him.
Thanks for pointing it out. - mooninite, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2This is another plug by F-Secure to get you to go buy their products. They make up fake stories all the time. Buried.
- deviantsteve, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Suddenly the market just got flooded.
