- life38, on 05/14/2008, -0/+24This bill includes paying people not to grow food. It began decades ago in order to keep prices in check and protect the soil from run off. Now people all kinds of people get the subsidy include some who own malls the sit on the same land that was for farming. Here is a cartoon making fun of the whole thing. http://mynonprofitwebsite.com/blog/2008/01/18/emo/
- tkeeley, on 05/14/2008, -0/+9Good point. Could you share this with your friends as well? I'd hate for this to be an issue people simply have no exposure to.
- KingofGossip, on 05/14/2008, -1/+8Interesting indeed!
- Patrikc325, on 05/14/2008, -0/+19The subsidies for these corps should be stopped. Budweiser just announced massive price increases for all products. I expect other brewers to follow suit.
- shiddysmurf, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7There's actually a world-wide shortage on barley and hops. Homebrewers are feeling the pinch too.
- Heywoodj, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3The land for growing barley and hops is being used to grow corn for ethanol production.
Yet another fiasco.

- clonestar, on 05/14/2008, -0/+21Pay people to not grow food and they won't grow food. Pay people not to work and they won't work. More stupidity from the government, at the expense of the long-suffering taxpayer.
- TheEngineer2008, on 05/14/2008, -1/+19It's time to end socialized farming.
- AlwaysAwake, on 05/14/2008, -0/+24More taxpayer money for corporate farmers. Welfare for the poor, pales by comparison to tax payer supported Welfare for the rich.

- Tess101, on 05/14/2008, -0/+12We must stop this from going through. I cannot believe we put such idiots in office and the continue to grow our government, and take more of our taxpayers dollars - WTF!!!!!
- grostig, on 05/14/2008, -1/+13Ron Paul would veto this and certainly didn't vote for it. Restore the Republic!
Don't vote for candidates that get large contributions from corporate lobbies.- shiddysmurf, on 05/15/2008, -1/+7This is exactlly the type of government Ron Paul is against.
- jana67, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1Ron Paul must be elected! http://best.hopeforamerica.ever.com
- Picaroon, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3Ron Paul also puts his own pork into these things knowing they will pass. By the way, Bush has announced that because the caps on farm income are too high (near $3 million I believe) for subsidies and it's just too bloated and costly, he plans to veto it. Where is your god now?
- stienster, on 05/15/2008, -2/+1open your eyes! Did Bush do anything to help this country in these 8 years???

- debunkthelies, on 05/14/2008, -1/+11O.K. I'll do my rant again; if you have a window sill a patio, a back or front yard or both, grow as much veggies as you can, and learn canning. I know all of us can't raise a cow, pig, or chickens, but those of us who can should, and share with your neighbors and family. I have a half acre and raise chickens and geese, my chickens are free range and produce so many eggs, and I only have 9 hens and 1 rooster, I wind up giving away most to my family and friends, if I don't have enough money for feed my family helps out, so barter is another way to beat the social farms strangle hold. If you live in the city in an apartment try getting together with neighbors on window farming and sharing how to ideas. The main thing buy seeds and potting soil before they make all seed suicide seeds, then save the seed from your harvest. End of Rant.
- RuffRidr, on 05/14/2008, -1/+13Nothing surprises me with this Congress. They have been awful.
- AngusSteel, on 05/14/2008, -1/+8Lets burn our crops for ethanol and then eat the ashes

- flatbushokie, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5The stupidity of this congress never ceases to amaze me. Unfortunately, one of the congressmen I admire, also had a hand in this. To say the least it tarnishes his image. The fact is congress has been giving taxpayer money away for so long, and to so many people, that it has become easier to give in and hand out the money than bothering to check and see if it is truly needed. Face it, there are very few small family farms around today. Most have been taken over by large corporations, that don't need the money, but will damn sure take it if it is handed out. John Q sucker gets it in the pocket book every time.
- timbro1, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3we need farms like we need a hole in the head
- OzarkGuru, on 05/15/2008, -2/+4Blue Dogs sold out a clean military funding bill for Pork in the Farm bill. I poste the following a couple days ago: Blue Dog Berry - Not so Blue With Farm Subsidy http://arkansasgopwing.blogspot.com/2008/05/blue-d ...
- tkeeley, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2agreed.
- ScienceDoc, on 05/15/2008, -1/+7Corporate welfare at its finest.
- dan.stryker, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6Worst Congress ever, no leadership...
- sr71atomica, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3This is what you get when you let the media select politicians as they selected a president twice in the 1990s.
- arthurprichard, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4Where is the Republican leadership? Is Hannity the only voice? Sheesh...
- davidmesaaz, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5This is the reason why the Democrats in congress are polling at 18 percent.
- Qong, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5The Farm Bill is honestly disgusting. It is politics at its worst and just goes to show all of us what happens as we continue to give the government more and more control, more and more of a say in every single aspect of our lives. Get them out of our business! Stop voting for politicians like Nancy Pelosi, liars and thieves who only want to make decisions for us honest, hard working Americans.
We have to show them how we feel through our voting, this is the year. Don't vote for big government candidates, don't worry about political parties, this is an issue of right and wrong. Big government is cold and wasteful, these politicians care more about their own self interest than serving the public. - elleigh2, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1DITTO, Qong!
- JohnGalt72, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Save a farmer...abolish the Dept of Agriculture.
It's pretty simple logic, if you can see past the "emotional" reasons we're given for the subsidies. In reality, subsidies do nothing more than loot the public to pay off the well connected.
As for Congress...they're not "stupid". They know exactly what they're doing, don't let them fool you. They're paying back political favors. If you think they really have the public's interest at heart, or that they are just naive to the effects these subsidies have, think again.
Want to change it? Get involved at your local level...it happens there too.- LumpyRevolution, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1THANK YOU!
- nealgbrown, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Unfortunately they are saying that congress has passed this with a VETO proof majority. I was surely hoping that it would not pass it was written, but this is the price we are going to pay for having NON conservative Republican candidates and representatives in all branches of government and at all levels of government.
- Stevanoski, on 05/16/2008, -2/+2When I farmed we had a saying when it flooded rain or had damaging hail. "look at all those RV's and Skidoos coming down. We pay $.90 on the dollar for crop insurance. Talk about a scam.
- Lowell64, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1And this is a surprise why? Look at history remember as people starved that fascist FDR had crops destroyed? Also remember that its about power more than money, sure there may be nice jobs waiting when the pigs get out of office but its the rush of controlling people that stimulates the pols.
- smylinacha, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1This is total insanity
