- ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -36/+463No, no.. you can say whatever you want, you just have to have ***** music playing behind you.
Call a woman a ho on a rap album and win a grammy.
Do it on a radio show, and you get *****.
You NEED the ***** music in the background. It's a necessity. - NoStoppingUs, on 10/12/2007, -46/+368free speech is no longer free.
i cant stand don imus, but come on. this is complete *****, and everyone but al sharpton apparently agrees. congrats, sharpton. you've just given real racists a reason to be racist. looks like you dont have to quit your day job you *****. (youre all atheists, right? i can call a reverend a "*****", yeah?) - ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -30/+285What a load of *****.
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -32/+240***** this *****. A white guy loses his job for what black DJs and rappers make millions for daily. Al Sharpton is the biggest nappy haired, fat, racist ***** out there.
PS- I don't even like Imus. - awm4, on 10/12/2007, -20/+189I really wish that people would stop referring to these idiot loudmouthes as Rev.
They do more damage and create more hatred than any other public figure. - jeeteeare, on 10/12/2007, -13/+168nappy-headed hoes rejoice
- Cwo655321, on 10/12/2007, -21/+164why? cuz he's white?
jackson is so ***** racist!
I'm not trying to defend him for what he said but it seems a bit hypocritical when rappers make millions saying the same thing. - sjl127, on 10/12/2007, -45/+1741st amendment - gone.
Racist thugs sharpton and jackson won. - smithro1984, on 10/12/2007, -25/+136"particularly young women of colour trying to make their way in this society,"
Because they have it SOOO hard. im FED up of ***** like this, everything always has to be racial.
CBS should be ashamed of themselves. - holzp, on 10/12/2007, -14/+119This is not about free speech, Imus does not go to jail for what he said and his private employer is allowed to terminate him for it.
What it is however is a victory for that racial arsonist Al Sharpton. Imus lost his job the moment he legitimatized a person who finds economic success in exploitation of these situations. - combustion8, on 10/12/2007, -4/+86I demand AL Sharpton apologizes to the acused Duke lacrose players he called "Rapists".
- kingvar, on 10/12/2007, -7/+85F'd up..CBS didn't even have the balls to wait to see how the Rutgers team greets Imus later today..plus Imus was in the middle of a telethon to raise money for charity.
The guy apologized, wtf more do you want?
Shame, a 30-year, accomplished career has to end in turd. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -40/+116Who knew that three borderline-insulting words could be enough to destroy a man's career, public reputation, and private life.
And yet Bill O'Reilly is still on the air, and Ann Coulter still sells hundreds of thousands of books. Just goes to show you that controversy isn't really controversy as long as a couple of thousand people agree with your outlandish remarks. - kirb59y, on 10/12/2007, -7/+81I haven't seen such an overreaction since the day after Super Bowl XXXVIII.
- tim507, on 10/12/2007, -16/+72If you Hate Sharpton Digg me up!
- Sp4nk, on 10/12/2007, -8/+61Freedom of Speech is a United States constitutional protection guaranteeing that the government will not oppress your political speech, which has absolutely nothing to do with this situation. Yes, it's ***** and yes, Al Sharpton is a piece of ***** who has made a career out of exploiting his race to get ahead in life, but this is not a Freedom of Speech issue.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+58"1st amendment - gone. "
No.. the 1st Amendment is still there. It only says that the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT can't take your right to free speech away. Imus is still legally and constitutionally able to say what he wants.
On the other hand, he works (worked) for a private corporation. They DO have the right to fire him if they think he was out of line and it could damage the company.
Personally, I think CBS and MSNBC are a bunch of ***** pussies for what they did...they the fact remains that they had every right to do it. - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -29/+79he wasnt fired for what he said, he was fired cause he no longer has any sponsors.
- Hipple, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51Who the ***** is OK with Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson being the ***** moral police? I hadn't been too angry about this Imus business until I read that article and saw that CBS just caved to pressure from those two. Un-*****-believable! When is somebody (famous) with some goddamn common sense going to stand up and ask what the ***** we're doing listening to Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson?
- Billiam627, on 10/12/2007, -12/+56"Jesse Jackson is not the emperor of black people" - Token
Apparently he is. The next time some radio host makes a joke about short Irish guys, I deserve to meet with his boss to get him fired, because I am one. That makes sense right?
It's a sad day for free speech. A great day for retarded political correctness - Biggindude, on 10/12/2007, -16/+56The double standard on speech in this country is ridiculous. White people aren't allowed to say anything that remotely offends another race without being called a racist, but other races can make all sorts of prejudiced remarks without being called out on them. This applies not only to speech, but to other aspects of American culture as well. There's a black HBO channel, a black music channel (BET), and all-black schools. I thought we integrated a long time ago, but apparently I was wrong, as long as it's not a white person being prejudiced in any way, it's alright.
I'll probably be called a racist for saying this, reverse discrimination is appalling. - masterJDK, on 10/12/2007, -5/+45I would applaud the cancellation of MTV.
Greatly. :) - ht70, on 10/12/2007, -10/+48To blame in order of egregiousness:
1) Opportunists looking to get exposure (Sharpton/Jackson)
2) Spineless sponsors
3) Spineless CBS execs
20) Stupid radio host trying to be funny - Csma, on 10/12/2007, -9/+42Hes better off on XM or Sirius radio now. :(
- sfpfc, on 10/12/2007, -24/+55I love how Al sharpton pretends to be an angel
remember South Park Kiss it and APOLOGIZE......apologize - AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37Synthetic outrage prevails again!
What a crock of *****. - libertao, on 10/12/2007, -24/+55@sjl127
What does this have to do with the 1st amendment? - AKBryant54, on 10/12/2007, -8/+39I don't see how this is a first amendment issue, more of a social issue. The first amendment basically gives us the right to say what we want, but it doesn't protect against you being fired from your job because of it, more of you not being arrested because of what you say.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+37Viacom owns CBS. CBS canceled Imus because of racist and sexist language...
Viacom also owns MTV. Time for MTV the whole channel to be canceled? After all, it makes it's living on "bitches and hos". - awm4, on 10/12/2007, -17/+47I find it interesting that the president of CBS radio met with Al Sharpton this morning and then fired Imus.
Thanks Al for helping destroy free speech. - trer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33None of you seem to understand the concept of Freedom of Speech.
The First Amendment only protects you from the government. The government cannot infringe on your right to speak. It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO with an employer firing an employee. If the government had arrested Imus, THAT'S a violation of the first amendment.
Advertisers have every right to pull their sponsorship from venues they feel uncomfortable with. And media stations have every right to fire an employee who is hurting the bottom line. That's not a violation of freedom of speech, that's just business.
The backbone of a media corporation is, guess what, IMAGE. You must protect your image at all times. Imagine if one of your employees was doing something that was causing you to lose money. You'd fire that employee in a second. - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Why didn't he say "Screw you, its a JOKE"
anything in comedy is fair game, once youre serious is the problem. apologizing only makes it seem serious. Howard Stern knows how to do it. He won't apologize over a joke. - williamhcosby, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33Sharpton is an egomaniacal hypocritical stubborn racist.
"Al Sharpton doesn't care about white people" - holzp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Imus joins the Stern channel on the Sirus/XM merged company. The world implodes shortly thereafter.
- sjl127, on 10/12/2007, -35/+59@libertao
After Obama called for his firing, he was fired 1 hour later from PMSNBC,
Think what Obama will do if in office (GOD, I hope not...) - itsscience, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Why does MSNBC keep interviewing really stupid random students at Rutgers?
- Tallon29, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28This is *****. He's being made to be a scapegoat and if anything this is hurting race relations more than helping it.
Read quotes from today's show http://www.drudgereport.com/flash3im.htm
6:12 AM: On Imus' radio program (no longer simulcast on MSNBC) this morning, Chris Carlin, who covers sports for the program, discussed yesterday's dismissal of charges against the Duke lacrosse players.
(rough transcript)
DON IMUS: When will Al Sharpton be apologizing to them?
(LAUGHTER)
CARLIN: I'm unaware of such a press conference.
IMUS: I'll be darned...
8:57AM: Tells his friends, "Don't call me telling me that the coverage is unfair...If I hadn't said it, there'd be no coverage...Shut up about it...I've been dishing it out for a long time, and now it's my turn...I'm not going to whine about it."
9:38: On meeting with the Rutgers basketball players: "I can't go through the rest of my life -- nor can they -- without us having this conversation and me telling them how I feel and, more importantly, them telling me how they feel."
He really is a good guy and I'm pissed off that he's been cancelled. Hopefully the uproar from this injustice will lead to a more lucrative deal for him on satellite radio or something. - appetite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I think someone should publish a manual every year that clearly defines what white people are allowed to say and what they aren't. It will save us a lot of media distractions.
Also, what is the definition of racism nowadays? Saying something racist? Being white and saying something racist? Being white and saying something racists and getting caught and not apologizing enough? Being white and saying something ambiguously racist and apologizing too soon, opening the door to Al Sharpton to come and exploit the situation?
Somebody pleeeease tell me the rules. I don't know the rules. I'm afraid I'll be accidentally racist one of these days. - JD52, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24The first amendment right does allow you to say anything you want however.... it does not shield you from the consequences.
(I think this whole situation is *****. Sharpton is a *****) - appetite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Attention everyone: 'Nappy' is suddenly a racist term.
In case you didn't know. I didn't.
Thanks for the memo, Mr. Sharpton.
http://www.imsorryalsharpton.com/ - jomunculus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I second that!
- quickjack, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27The radio and tv sponsors fired Don Imus.
- SGT.SHIZZO, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Better yet! I call on his resignation.
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Depends on the contract. However, I think there's legal exclusions whereas if you fire someone, you cant prevent them from working in their usual capacity/field/livelyhood.
- ucbmoose, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26Can't wait to hear him on XM next month
- luckytopher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21So does this mean we can legitimately get record labels to fire pretty much every rapper?
- combustion8, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22And yet black comedians will continue to make fun of white people... double standards are fun!!
- bang21, on 10/12/2007, -11/+27Jumping on "free speech" as an argument for why this firing is wrong has nothing to do with the situation. He was an employee of CBS. They can fire him for just about anything (except his race, religion, etc.). He can freely say anything he wants. No one is stopping him. CBS just doesn't want a racist working for them and saying things using their equipment and radio station. If Imus owned his own radio station, he could say more racist remarks freely (however he would still be subjected to the FCC regulations that drove Howard Stern to satellite).
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17White soldiers died to free black slaves. Want to try your stupid attempt at a superiority complex again?
Those same black who were held as slaves would be ashamed to see the resources blacks have today being wasted the way they so often are. - fucko, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Just a curiosity. He called the Tennessee Team "cuties" When only three on that team share his skin color. Does this mean he thinks black women are cute?
( sharpton is a profiteer just in it for the money ) -
