- RightHand, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3"At the latest Doha Debate held at the prestigious Oxford Union in the United Kingdom on May 1st, two-thirds of the student audience ... all » approved a motion claiming that Israel's supporters are stifling Western debate about Israel's actions. The event at the world famous debating society of Oxford University marked the first time the Doha Debates have been held outside Qatar. The Debate took place amid mounting controversy over the role of the pro-Israel lobby in the United States and accusations that it has suppressed criticism of Israel - a charge that the lobby vigorously denies.
Norman Finkelstein, an American academic and a leading critic of Israeli policies, argued in favour of the motion claiming that the pro-Israel lobby sows confusion to avoid being held to account. The journalist and writer Andrew Cockburn also supported this view, claiming there are "red lines" in discussing Israel that no politician or journalist in the US would dare cross for fear of being deionised or driven out of public life.
Dr Martin Indyk, former US Ambassador to Israel and Director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy, argued strongly against the motion, saying that the recent 'firestorms' around President Carter's book and the Walt and Mearsheimer report are proof of a lively debate on the subject. His fellow panellist David Aaronovitch, the British journalist and broadcaster, dismissed accusations of conspiracy around the lobby and said that there simply isn't a lobby in the UK in the same way that there is in the United States. - synaesthete, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2not surprising, you could tell from the applause at the beginning of the debate that the audience had made up its mind about a shadowy jewish conspiracy before the debate started. With half the audience from quatar, and the other Half from England, it's not a surprising result.

"Lets take the example of the UN Human Rights Council. They have in their existence only condemned one country for human rights abuses, Israel. They did this 9 times."
So, the lesson for you is to point your finger at someone else and query, why not them? Are you serious? That is the only lesson that you have learnt after 9 condemnation? Is it only Zionists that have a blind spot like this?
One very likely lesson is that before you were issued with public warnings, there were numerous private warnings in advance. I suspect that there were at least 3, likely 6, private warnings BEFORE the 9 public condemnations. So really you are on either 12 or more likely 15 condemnations in Israel!!!
Mindful of your blind spot, I have no problem spelling my point out to you, if you have not understood my point. I have no wish to treat you as a slow wayward pupil, but anyone who would write down an 'argument' like yours, is in serious need of help. - Kitrus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It seems that YOU have already made up your mind, synaesthete.

- CJWright, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I love that this comes out at: http://www.thedohadebates.com/:
"The Doha Debates are an initiative of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development" BUT see See http://www.menewsline.com/stories/2005/may/05_30_3.html. for this direct quote: 'Qatar has provided millions of dollars to support the Palestinian war against Israel.'
And while the civilized world has pledged to withhold aid from the newly formed Palestinian government headed by the terrorist organization Hamas, Qatar has joined the terrorist state of Iran in pledging millions of dollars to the government.
Also Qatar Foundation, an arm of the Qatar government, has made major gifts to Carnegie Mellon, Virginia Commonwealth and Cornell universities. According to the Wall Street Journal, the amounts range from $10 million to $50 million. You can bet that we won't see many critical studies of Militant Islamism and terrorism coming out of these centers[Sure AIPAC - not billions in oil money- is surpressing debate - HA!]
Also Qatari government may be giving, as some reports suggest, millions of dollars to al-Qaeda in order to thwart an attack on the country - this money, mind you, could very well be used by al-Qaeda to attack America.
"The audience is made up of people living in or visiting Qatar. University and senior high school students, from a wide range of different countries in the Arab world and beyond, comprise half of the audience." (- - My, what a shock that THEY would vote that way!!)
Okay - let's get real. On the all powerful Jewish lobby supressing discussion (which is why this is not happening - HA!)

@righthand (who usually writes the word "crap" 50 times when he disagrees with people):
Anyone quoting well-known discredited extremists like Norman Finkelstein is seriously in trouble. Finkelstein, assistant professor at DePaul University (as 53-year-old untenured assistant professor of political science at DePaul University is no doubt one of the oldest assistant professors in America - Before coming to DePaul in 2003, he had been fired by several schools in the New York area for being a pseudo-scholar and for his hatemongering activities.) is best known for his cheerleading the Hizbollah and his endless smearing of Holocaust survivors, has a completely empty record of academic publication. He has never produced a single paper published in a refereed scholarly journal. Instead, he turns out one anti-Semitic book after another, as well as hate screeds for propaganda magazines and web sites. His "books" are published by firms making editorial decisions based on commercial considerations rather than the quality of their scholarship. Finkelstein's long history of Jew-baiting is by now well known, as is his history of vulgarity and juvenile smear mongering. Finkelstein has proclaimed Holocaust denier David Irving (who insists there were no gas chambers at Auschwitz) a great historian. Finkelstein's personal web site is a collection of bigotries, including death threats and pornographic cartoons, as well as countless smug smears against all Holocaust survivors. Finkelstein's "books" have been dismissed as pseudo-scholarship by nearly every serious historian to review them. He has used his position at DePaul University in Chicago to promote his open celebration of Middle East terrorism. He maintains the most intimate ties with Holocaust Deniers .
(Next I'm sure you'll be getting your facts on Israel and the Israeli Lobby from Chomsky, Farrakahn and why not Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? . . .)

"The son of Jewish Holocaust survivors, Finkelstein is known for his writings critical of Israel's role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and for his contention that the Holocaust is being exploited both for pro-Israel political ends, and for the personal financial gain of institutional actors at the expense of actual survivors.
Finkelstein has written of his parents' experiences during World War II. His mother, Maryla Husyt Finkelstein, grew up in Warsaw, Poland, and survived the Warsaw Ghetto and the Majdanek concentration camp, as well as two slave labor camps. His father, Zacharias Finkelstein, was a survivor of both the Warsaw Ghetto and the Auschwitz concentration camp."

Which version do you believe??? A Jew, who is an anti-Semite! What next? One line equals a page of his CRAP. Those sources show the desperation. Oh god, CAMERA. Man the bilge pumps. CRAP. CRAP. CRAP. Shame, shame, shame. I've never heard of most of the rest!
Comments on the HOLOCAUST INDUSTRY...
"When I read Finkelstein's book, The Holocaust Industry, at the time of its appearance, I was in the middle of my own investigations of these matters, and I came to the conclusion that he was on the right track. I refer now to the part of the book that deals with the claims against the Swiss banks, and the other claims pertaining to forced labor. I would now say in retrospect that he was actually conservative, moderate and that his conclusions are trustworthy."--Raul Hilberg
