- nTensify, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Oh, so they're not really abolishing FEMA after all.
Wonder if they'll call it Federal Agency for the Management of Emergencies (FAME). - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15The problem wasnt FEMA
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9reppy: as a libertarian, i don't think part of my check should have to go towards your bbq mishaps. now lemme get back to paving my own road.
- zakarria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Nope, close though. They're calling it the Emergency Management Authority. See, they wanted to drop off the "Federal" part so people will stop thinking they're like, responsible for it, or something...
- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It will probably be something with the appropriately meaningless doublespeak, in the vein of Homeland Security. Basically something designed to evoke a positive emotional response in those willing to follow authoritarian leaders.

- flipcritic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If the people who are running the place are incompetent, regardless whether they're Republican or Democrat (I'm a foreigner so be gentle), then it doesn't matter what organization you put up to handle emergencies.
- chetanw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Old wine in a new bottle
- ignition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hey, I bet they can set it up faster if they get the guys who are in charge of FEMA to train the people who will be in charge of the new EMA.
- adodaro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How about the "Federal Aid Mismanaged, Irresponsible, Negligent and Enraged" or FAMINE for short?
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No it will be F.E.A.R. (too lazy to finish the backronym)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Its just a re-banding of the same agency, that's all. "SAME CRAPPY SERVE BUT WITH A NEW NAME!"
- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Exactly. The problem is a total lack of competency(sic) at the local and state level.
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7the problem was FEMA, but it wasn't FEMA's fault. FEMA was placed under homeland security and stripped bare. this is just to show "we did something". yeah, you switched two letters around, way to earn your keep. election years bring about some good overdue legislation, but also a lot of fluff ones.
- pplante, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4FEMA wouldn't pay my medical bills, nor my property damage. Maybe this new agency will :(
- aptmunich, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yeah, becuase spending money on social programs is what's really hurting the taxpayer...
Never mind the billion dollars halliburton just "lost" or the positively retarded amounts of money spent on useless military projects... - strangerzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sure the Senate will do a wonderful job ... of rewarding their campaign contributors with lucrative contracts.
- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Oh, so you're saying the utterly useless Mayor did a good job of preparing the city and the people?
You're saying the governor did everything in her power to make sure the citizens were safe?
And you're saying that the state properly managed funds when it came to maintaining and upgrading the levies? A simple floodgate system could have prevented the flooding (after all the levies didn't actually break, it was the drainage canals) but for some reason the city/state didn't want to spend the money on that? Hrmmmm, wonder why that is?
You have the same lack of foresight as the majority of leftists. The problem of Katrina was caused LONG before the storm reached shore. - voidchild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3here's a little rebranding that reflects the organization: F**k Everyone in Mississippi and Alabama
- transfire, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Exactly. The problem is a total lack of competency(sic) at the local and state level.
Did you happen to notice where Louisiana's National Guard where? They weren't home eating crawdads buddy. The size and nature of the disaster put responsibility squarely on Federal authorities --which was botched. If you want to go back to a Confederacy than by all means lets do it. But until then, it's a Federal responsibility b/c the Feds have usurped the power. - Smoove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The problem is a mythical belief in the godlike powers of government to save our asses. Walmart was giving actual water to actual victims, while FEMA was sending semis full of ice on wild goose chases. Abolish all federal agencies, and people will stop waiting for Godot.
- chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah, I'm sure they will... If its an insurance agency. Lack of proper planning on your part does not make an emergency on my part.
On the flip side, Good to know that you made it out alive. Some other people didn't. - deanlowe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Aren't you already sort of in a socialist system? It's a bit backwards, I know, but still...
Let's see, you collect taxes from everyone and hand out cash to the rich, with a few poorly funded social programs thrown in for good PR. - Smoove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"The next time your house is on fire, put it out yourself."
Red herring. Are you claiming that only the government can put out fires? There are plenty of private fire departments out there that say you're wrong. - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1NOPD - not our problem dude
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Uttles, you need to get your facts straight before you spout.
You are incorrect on so many points. - jerbaker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3What a bunch of morons we have running this place. I can't wait until the next disaster and the replacement is even worse. The problem wasn't FEMA ... it was the assinine reorganization creating DHS.
- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3where in the world did you learn "hand out cash to the rich?"
have you been studying at Berkeley or something? - jlrolin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well, one down, Department of Homeland Security next! I love how a government agency makes a list of events susceptible to terrorist attack, and one is a corn festival 2 miles away from me full of country farmers. FEMA gone, GOOD, Department of Homeland Security next for screwing state funding for security with a ridiculous list favoring Indiana!
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1...
digg sometimes puts my replies in the wrong place - uttles, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Oh Yes!!!!! More government programs!!! Woooohoooo, one more step towards socialism!!!!
- reppy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3The next time your house is on fire, put it out yourself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Wait, that doesn't count!
