- Retrodigg123, on 08/21/2008, -8/+377Why did you use a thumbnail of the Madrid Air Crash?
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -11/+169"In relation to foreigners holding demonstrations in Beijing in support of Tibet independence, competent authorities have the right to handle these things according to law," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a news conference on Wednesday.
"I'd also like to emphasize that in China, activities that support Tibet independence will be strongly condemned by the Chinese people and will not be welcomed."
I really want to have sympathy for them, but they went to a foreign country and broke that country's laws. Regardless of how you may feel about the laws, they are they laws and simply breaking them will normally land you a) in jail or b) in some form of holding cell awaiting deportation. Unfortunately for them, China does not appear to be the most forgiving country when it comes to lawbreakers. Maybe the US embassy will help them out, but they should really be prepared to spend a few weeks/months in jail until the Olympics is over and this is all sorted out..that kind of thing comes with the job (protester/freedom fighter). - seanwyx, on 08/21/2008, -8/+144If you can't find an appropriate thumbnail, don't use one at all.
- kmb1794, on 08/21/2008, -7/+136LOL I'm sorry, but "blogger-activists?"
- GregFD3S, on 08/21/2008, -0/+116BREAKING!
- HoratioHellpop, on 08/21/2008, -9/+110Idiots. When in Rome, obey Roman laws, else get ready for the lions.
- Tomboys, on 08/21/2008, -14/+100Man I was afraid of something like this.
- angusm, on 08/21/2008, -8/+94I like the lordly contempt of the mainstream media for "self-styled" citizen journalists expressed in the article.
If the mainstream media did their job, maybe citizen journalists wouldn't be needed to take up the slack. But the big boys are all too busy watching the fireworks and the medals and leering at the beach volleyball chicks in their skimpy outfits. So it's left to a few misfits with camcorders to try and report the important story that everything in China isn't lovely after all. As a reward, they get ten days detention in a Chinese jail and a handful of sneer quotes from Reuters. - themadhatter444, on 08/21/2008, -0/+78Don't worry, bloggers. Twitter will save you.
- njiska, on 08/21/2008, -10/+63Well protest in a country that doesn't allow protesting and you get detained. They knew the risk, they got what they had coming. That may seem cold, but that's just how it is. Just be glad they didn't bring in the tanks.
- EmitStop, on 08/21/2008, -11/+55Sorry about that, I think i just went with whatever thumbnail popped up first. Didn't know what it was from.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -2/+46"Unhand me! I'm an internet superstar, MY CAT HAS A ***** CHEESEBURGER DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND!?"
- centran, on 08/21/2008, -5/+44If they keep them in jail after the Olympics then I might start getting upset.
Like you said they broke the law. Besides that, what kind of moron goes to China to protest about China... they not realize who they where messing with? China is not America. You can't do that ***** there.
Plus, this is the Olympics. There is a time and place for everything but protesting and fighting should not be done during the Olympics. The Olympics is a time to put your differences aside. - jenel, on 08/21/2008, -6/+44We should send the troops there: http://stuff.orly.ch/img/blog/dont_worry_sir_i_m_f ...
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -2/+39Lawbreakers arrested for breaking the law. Film at 11.
- kingmanic, on 08/21/2008, -1/+37Likely future:
8 Americans get their stuff rummaged through, Manhandled Slightly, gets deported to their port of origin. Lifetime ban from China.
Slim odds worst case:
8 Americans have a bus accident on their way to a government interview. Government washes their hands of the ordeal saying they can't influence random events. Will not give up bodies for health reasons. - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -12/+48no bloggers?!?!?!?! how the ***** will we survive!!!!!!!!!!!! and the fact they actually got arrested is sad
- jonmlm, on 08/21/2008, -4/+37killed? uh. they're just going to get deported for being jackasses and going to CHINA to protest. stupid, yes.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -9/+43I hate bloggers. Detain them until they print news comes back.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -12/+43Seriously, what a bunch of tards. WHY would you go to CHINA of all places (maybe Soviet Russia!) and do something you know they're going to F* you over for. Makes no sense. I hope they spend some time in a Chinese prison, so they learn from their stupid ass lesson.
- Pinkertinkle, on 08/21/2008, -6/+34What did they think was gonna happen? Enjoy the whipping, bloggers.
- ibone, on 08/21/2008, -9/+36IMO they are getting what they deserve. Darwin in smiling on people like this.
You arent in Kansas anymore you ***** jackasses. - benologist, on 08/21/2008, -0/+27BREAKING NEWS FROM YESTERDAY!
- ligyron, on 08/21/2008, -4/+30Didn't this happen yesterday? How is this breaking?
- dafragsta, on 08/21/2008, -0/+25The MSM hates internet journalism because it ***** up their propaganda end game. Mainstream journalists have been feeding us what we want to hear, whether it was true or not, for quite a long time now and I don't think they expected the internet to turn into a much better 24 hour news service than what they offer.
Depending on how open you are to the notion that the media only serves corporate interests now, you could say that the 24 hour news phenomenon was/is a great way for them to make minor shifts away from covering the real news. After all, the real news isn't going on 24 hours a day and when you have a 24-hour network, it's easy to excuse a few fluff pieces here and there, right? Right? Exactly.
They've desensitized the public at large to fluff SO ***** MUCH, that it's now permissible for a news juggernaut like CNN and FOX to completely gloss over real stories in the name of fluff and over-the-top punditry and editorials, and that's the way people on both sides of the aisle want it, that's a great way to polarize the nation, and the more polarized we are, the more time we'll spend at each other's throats as opposed to pointing out the divisive and treasonous journalism.
Take a look at the Iraq war and show me where the naysayers were in 2002. They were virtually non-existent because the War on Terror was big ratings and they'd already cut deals for embedded journalists to get even bigger ratings. There was very little counterpoint to the invasion then. - SkippyDoorknob, on 08/21/2008, -0/+24CONFIRMED!
- Pinkertinkle, on 08/21/2008, -8/+32Let's go to Russia and demonstrate for Chechnyan independence!
- VinnieDaMac, on 08/21/2008, -11/+32Didn't realize it was so hard to stay out of other countries affairs.
- Butros, on 08/21/2008, -4/+24oversimplifying a complicated issues FTW!
- MavRevMatt, on 08/21/2008, -1/+21Welcome to Digg.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -3/+23hey bloggers in jail use the law of attraction to get yourself out of jail. Use the secret.
- donkeydrop, on 08/21/2008, -12/+31Inaccurate - replace Bloggers with Trouble-makers in the title
- Blind0825, on 08/21/2008, -4/+23Really? Over a thumbnail?
- Agger, on 08/21/2008, -5/+23Did they think that wasn't gonna happen?
- BESTenemy, on 08/21/2008, -4/+22"Blogger-activist" is an oxymoron.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -13/+33Here's to hoping it was Arianna Huffington and a couple more writers from the Huffington Post!
- WhitE_RaVeN, on 08/21/2008, -3/+21Everyone was told that if you blog against the China-Tibet incident that they would be imprisoned. They knew what they were getting into.
- ctlr, on 08/21/2008, -1/+18"re-education through labor" ..... that's messed up.
- TheOther1, on 08/21/2008, -1/+18Don't forget sensationalism!
- MCA2142, on 08/21/2008, -3/+20ask Iraqis and Afghans. It seems it's pretty damn hard.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+16FIXED!
- ZeeZee2k, on 08/21/2008, -0/+16It's very kind of the Chinese government to give those bloggers something to blog about.
- cathpah, on 08/21/2008, -1/+16keep in mind that many protesters--bloggers or not--actually WANT to be jailed, even if it means being jailed in china....so that their situation will bring china's human rights violations and their control over their media to the forefront of international news coverage.
- thomble, on 08/21/2008, -3/+18This was submitted almost a day ago, and occurred even earlier. This is only "BREAKING" news on Digg. This place is an embarrassment.
- sk33lz, on 08/22/2008, -0/+14Actually...Reuters hosts their images weird and the actual image for the story normally cannot be used as a thumbnail for a Digg submission...I have submitted a few of their stories and had the same problem.
- scabbers, on 08/21/2008, -0/+14They know they're not going to get the electro-baton up the ass, but they do know they'll get lots of "blog hits" and sell interviews when they get home.
- Spire3660, on 08/21/2008, -1/+15SAme thing. Just becasue you have american sensibilities of liberty and freedom, does not mean that you get a pass when acting like a jackass in someone else's playground. Break the law, go to jail, it doesnt matter if the law is moral or not.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -2/+16hopefully perez hilton was one of them
- borez, on 08/21/2008, -1/+15Well, to be honest, If you jump into the red fire you're gonna get burned. The Chinese government have no tolerance for protesters, it's goes against everything their communist doctrine stands for and being from another country does not give you any immunity from their protocol... unless, of course, you're a diplomat. You knew this when you got on the plane and you'll know it better when you get off the plane they're about to put you on. Think yourself lucky that you'll actually be getting on a plane.
/not that that makes any of this OK of course. - Spire3660, on 08/21/2008, -0/+13Why would you be upset if they are held after the olympics? I see no correlation between the olympic games, breaking the law and length of sentence. They broke the law, and will be judged and sentenced, the olympics has nothing to do with it.
