- gbudavid, on 01/21/2008, -0/+32Yep Multiculturalism will do it to you every time. once when I was young there was none of this press one if you want mexican two if english and three for the language directory. This is America and we need to end The Hyphenated American and just be American
- KJeffV, on 01/21/2008, -1/+19I've been in the same sitch many times . . . Joisey, NC, MI, FL. (Strangely, although we own and travel extensively in OH, it hasn't occurred there yet, but give it time!) Every Span convo I've ever overheard was not even lighthearted office banter—but poking fun at customers or recounting some meaningless previous experience: what was on TV, what Billie said to Martha said to Joanie said to Bob, how someone dresses, & the like. I normally don't say word one unless I find myself trapped in Matt's position, but an early "¡No subtitulos!" usually gets the job done pronto.
- allisonrose870, on 01/21/2008, -1/+26Our lame leaders are too afraid to address the issue for what it is and make English the Official language rather than the National language. It infuriates me!!!!! I am sick and tired of Spanish being spoken everywhere all the time. Like the author of the WND article said, "keep Spanish in the privacy or your home or in certain community situations for heritage reasons." Growing in and around the NYC area I am no stranger to tongues. I've been around Spanish speaking peoples from all different countries my whole life, and I will tell you this: It used to be the vast norm of these Spanish speakers couldn't wait to learn English once they got here. Most of them either learned it from watching t.v. or from their children. They knew it was a key to success in this country - the sooner one learned to speak English and the more fluent one became, the more doors would open up for them and their families and children. And I absolutely agree with the author when he states Spanish is being spoke not for us but despite us. It is a flipping of the bird for sure. A relevant article to this story, Bill aims to protect English on the job By Audrey Hudson December 29, 2007 The Washington Post http://washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?A ... ... "a discrimination lawsuit was filed in March by the EEOC against a Salvation Army thrift store in Framingham, Mass., where two employees were given a year to learn English. They were fired after they refused."... Related Articles from Digg search: http://digg.com/search?s=salvation+army+english&se ...
- DesertDad, on 01/21/2008, -1/+25Mr. Sanchez has it right, and his words remind me of President Theodore Roosevelt's admonition that our history and the English language must be used to teach and acculturate immigrants into our society. Roosevelt warned against this tower of Babel, and was able to prevent it in his lifetime and for the subsequent couple of generations. We now have become soft and uncommitted in our own national identity, and will collapse from within if we do not take strides to turn that tide of complacency. My young children may live out their lives in relative peace and stability, but I have little hope for their children. Thankfully a few of the local businesses have English-only policies on the floor or at the counter, and I don't frequent the ones which allow or encourage the Babel approach. I have said, 'lo siento, no me entiendes,' and walked away on more than one occasion.
Immigrants who come here apparently want the benefits of our society, and should be willing to become full members in order to benefit themselves and society. To actively avoid or delay acculturation weakens this culture, with the expected result that our culture becomes overwhelmed by the culture(s) the immigrants bring with them. Which of those cultures are as politically and economically dynamic, open and attractive as ours? None of them - that is why they are immigrating here and we are not emigrating there.
If we allow them to come without acculturating to our society, then we are allowing a soft invasion which in a couple of generations will erase our society and replace it with the politics and economics of the immigrant nations. Not a Jeffersonian revolution, but a complete societal overthrow from within, as Jefferson, Franklin, and other Founding Fathers warned. Our language and law define us as Americans. Abandoning common language renders the law even more terribly ineffective than it has become in 232 years, and the dissolution from within will continue. - these3remain, on 01/21/2008, -1/+17My parents deliberately chose to NOT teach us their native language because they felt it would not benefit us. While it is somewhat regrettable (we learned a little; the rest had to be learned at university), I now understand the sentiment that motivated their choice. My dad knew no English when he started school , but swiftly learned it and skipped 2 grades to boot. Political correctness, multi-culturalism all play a part in this but let's not forget the administration and others in political positions' determination to eliminate our borders as well as our sovereignty.
- these3remain, on 01/21/2008, -1/+19I'd also like to add that their is nothing that makes one drop their ethnic prefix, i.e., "african/hispanic/asian, etc. american, faster than traveling abroad. As soon as you get there, you realize that you are an American. Period.
- wpi97, on 01/21/2008, -4/+13I see nothing wrong with a business adding a "Press 2 for Spanish" option to their customer service system. Those automated menus are annoying anyway, and if the company thinks that adding a Spanish option will make them less annoying and bring them more customers, it is their right to experiment. As long as alternative languages are not mandated by the government for private businesses, I am fine with it.
For all I care, a private company can conduct all its business in whatever language they like. They will simply not have people, who do not speak that language as their customers. Let the market sort it out.
Having said that, I think it makes no sense to print ballots in anything other than English, since basic knowledge of English is required to get citizenship. - Ladyjojaye203, on 01/21/2008, -1/+11English should most definately be the "Official" language. It is the one constant that unifies us - a nation of immigrants. We are not united by anything any more - I can not believe the number of times clerks & customer service peole have spoken Spanish in front of me, sometimes with derogatory comments. My how the looks change when I explain it to them in letter perfect Spanish. And then get the manager involved. I should not be put thru this, nor should they. We need to have an official legal language - English, after all thats what has been used until the last 10 years.I learned English to go to school as we only spoke Hungarian at home. I learned Spanish for my mother in law. At 65 she began learning English , and we all get along fine. We need to get the politicos off the side lines and make English the Legal Official language - now!
- fuzybrat, on 01/21/2008, -1/+12Taking on the American identity starts with not referring to yourself as some sort of hyphenated American, e.g. Mexican American, African American, Irish American, etc. etc. etc. In most cases your heritage is obvious, and if not, so what! You are an American! Remembering your roots is great but embrace the American identity, heritage, culture, and language first or go home!
- egalicki, on 01/22/2008, -1/+9If you don't want to be an American why don't you go back where you came from? Or could it be that you wish to take part in the benefits of those whom you find so repulsive and distasteful? Those whom you refuse to respect are those who have created all the benefits you come here to suck up. You are nothing more than parasites if you don't integrate yourself into the language, customs and laws of the host body, America. I think if the term parasite were used more in this setting, the parasites would have to make the term have new meaning and social acceptance. Remember how homosexual and other terms were negative, now they are positive. Maybe these parasites on our society could do the same with the term parasite. I would prefer they become offended by having the term reference them and either stop being parasites or go find another host body.
- mattsanchez, on 01/22/2008, -1/+12I'm glad so many of you have enjoyed the article. Feel free to make a comment at Matt-Sanchez.com. This is a great debate our country needs to have.
- oceanrain, on 01/22/2008, -0/+7America just continues to splinter apart whilst our politicians care about nothing but their own hides. Why should I, a third generation American, have to press 1 for English?
- gbudavid, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Why should Any American Have to push a button
- FromTheTop, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8ALL of the candidates, especially Democrats, are soft on Immigration except Mitt Romney who was for a secure Border with more Border Agents and a Biometric ID Card even before the "McCAIN/KENNEDY AMNESTY BILL for ILLEGAL ALIENS to homestead here, but NEVER assimilate. The McCain/Kennedy Amnesty Bill was dumped by a grassroot effort from American citizens who let the professional, political parasites know we are against ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. The insane EEOC tells them they do NOT need to speak ENGLISH in order to keep their job. (RE: THE SALVATION ARMY is sued by the UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT!!!!!) Imbedded Bureaucrats have been in every department of governance, generation after generation, through nepotism and undermining ALL Republican Administrations with LEAKS and advancing their own ideologies.
Fred Thompson? His guidance will come from the same old tired rhetoric from professional, political parasites and imbedded bureaucrats! Fred did NOT vote for Ronald Reagan. Why does he claim to be a conservative in the mold of Ronald Reagan?
I cannot comprehend why Americans do NOT see that MITT ROMNEY knows how to run the STORE. Why do you continue to send the SAME OLD professional, political parasites back to Washington, D.C. to do the same old thing??? Washington, D.C. has been BROKEN far too long and MITT ROMNEY is the ONLY man who can FIX it. He listens to the American people! Professional, political parisites listen to LOBBYISTS! Have you forgotten the Lincoln Savings and Loan scandal? Keating, the comptroller, was convicted of over 70 criminal violations. McCain was one of the ringleaders of the"KEATING FIVE" that cost the American taxpayers $160 BILLION DOLLARS. What will he do as POTUS? Be afraid! Be very afraid!
The links below will give you THE REAL HUCKABEE while he Governor of Arkansas and why he should not even be a candidate for POTUS. He would be worse than HRC or Obama as POTUS!

http://michellemalkin.com/2007/12/11/minuteman-pro ... - mtg12345, on 01/24/2008, -0/+5This story illustrates the point exactly that the real immigration problem America faces (legal/illegal/whatever) is Assimilation - or the lack there of! Multi-Culturalism has replaced Melting Pot and that is what is fueling the fire of this debate. Check my post on this at http://www.rightmindedpeople.com/right_minded_peop ...
