- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I was modding an old digital camera (to add an external shutter release) and the shock I got was quite intense. And it was not an instantaneous spark like the video. It kept on shocking as if the cap was charging then shocking me then charging then shocking me.
  
  It was worth it. I now have a camera that I can place anywhere and will take time lapse photos at an interval I set. Quite cool.

I must have been in 7th grade. Its not enough to stop someone like a real taser would, but its enough to freak someone out.

ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27This is NOT the same as a taser. This is incredibly short in duration and much less in power. If you try this on a rapist or something, it's gonna have about as much effect as if you skipped building this and just pinched his nipple.

- beotch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Real tasers are not expensive for any real reason. They work differently though, and make a high-voltage T shaped wave. This camera-flash stuff just discharges a capacitor into you, which doesn't affect your nervous system the same way. A flash capacitor can stop your heart btw, a taser is designed to use lower currents but have more effect. A real taser isn't "safe" either. The police have been using them to kill and torture people beyond the required use of force.

Although 99% of the time a shock from this is a short term minor sting, if shocked in the wrong spot some people (even more likely if they have a pacemaker or heart problems) could go into fibrillation and potentially die (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_shock). Although it may seem like a harmless prank, this should not be used as such. Please kids, don't try this at home. Adults, please be careful if you plan on trying this ;).

Sounded amusing, so I take the shell off, and get ready to hit the button to blind my friend when he walks in the door. Instead I hit something on the circuit board and zapped me. That plan backfired...
Using this as a taser would be less than effective though, you'd probably do more damage by throwing the camera at someone.

Anyway, as a n00b at the factory you'd always shock yourself a few times. Sometimes the cameras would go nuts though flashing and charging over and over. Those were fun times.
BobTGoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This isn't a taser, it's just an electric shock. I was screwing around with a Kodak disposable camera for a class once and managed to discharge a fully charged flash battery into my hand. It hurt like hell but I imagine a taser is many times more powerful.

ceralor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you go by, like, Walgreens or CVS, you can actually request dead disposable camera bodies for free. Just tell them you're not reusing it for photographic purposes and tell them how many you need. I got about 20 that way.

Then what you do is you take the capacitors and set them up in in a parallel...get 14 of those babies soldered together, a plastic case, and you've got a REAL taser then.

The best part is when I was in high school, we would attach these to sticks and make cattle prods.

Neochrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Radio shack has much bigger capacitors (at list it used too), and if you know what are you doing you can form a ladder simmilar to the ones used to ionize air. Actually, to form simplest "taser" all you need is a diode, a resistor (100 kohm will do) and a capacitor, link them in series and charge capacitor in an outlet. It should hold a charge for a quite some time... (make sure that capacitor has proper voltage rating)

jwigum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A "Tazer" is a brand name of a device that fires prongs into someone. Those prongs trail thin wires back to the launcher, which then runs electric current through them.
It's not a tazer unless it fires the prongs away from the device, with trailing wires.

The term he's looking for is stun gun.

The fact is that it is unnecessary to create a higher potential for a flash (current is more important) and the electrolytic photo capacitors used are normally rated at ~330V (a breakdown voltage MUCH less than 7kV). The high voltage is used to ionize the gas in the flash tube (hence the need for the "third contact").

But yeah, it's definitely not 7000v, only about 350v depending on the manufacturer. I also wanted to mod one of these to put a larger capacitor, maybe at least a 1000w one, but I get lazy and I definitely had enough scars on my arm for a long time. I'm sure people could say, "How the crap are you getting scars"? With the frayed wires, the shock will cause the copper to get hot and then your skin will be cauterized. The small scars lasted almost a year... I was shocked a total of seven times, with two small scars each.

I actually accidently shocked myself once. My friend dropped the camera out of a 2 story window and I was picking up the remains and, lucky me, I picked up the part that shocks you! Wasn't too cool, but, an experience nonetheless.

canonman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The best way to do this is to mount the stripped wires along the side of the camera in parallel, that way you can barely even tell they're rigged.

I remember when I was like 14, on the last day of camp like 10 kids made these. I only got shocked a couple times but it sure does leave a mark.

kaptainchump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I made one of these, but i hooked a wire to each pole of the capacitor and made the leads come out where the camera trigger was. I could ask someone take a picture and they'd get the sheeyot zapped out of them.

My principal heard my friends and I zapping metal things with the camera ( it makes a loud pop) and he came up and snatched it out of my hands saying, "what is going on here ZAP!" He shocked the crap out of himself in front of all my friends and his eyes were wide open in disbelief. He said, "I haven't felt a shock like that since i worked as a 10th grade science teacher....WOW." About 2 months later, i found out he wrote me a referral for that little incident.
