    The only good one was the dummy-through-the-awnings one, and although not surprising it was at least mildly interesting to see how sucky fingerprint locks are, the rest were just dumb.
    Aluminium paint can be applied to your body? Wow, what a shocker.
    Microwaved CD's fail when run with powertools at 25000 rpm? No sh!t sherlock.
    Killer quicksand is not? Has anyone ever thought so?

      The paint? wasnt to see if you could paint yourself, was to see if full body paint could lead to problems with breathing/metabolism type stuff. (hence the medics on hand)

      The cd, was tested in normal parameters because of stories/myths about cds failing in drives and shrapnel coming out and doing damage. there are 2 parts to every myth on the show, test the myth within its boundaries, then replicate the results of the myth by any means neccessary.

      And actually, the killer quicksand was part of the "movie myths" shows. Alot of movies have used the "killer quicksand" bit...so it fell right in line with the logic of the show.

      Grow a brain, figure out how to use it, then come back.
    • covertbadger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think his point was simply that Mythbusters has done much better stuff than this. I'm inclined to agree. Whilst these clips might be 'on-topic', they aren't exactly up there with trying to fuse a car between two giant trucks in a head-on collision.

      No it wasn't you idiot, that's the GOLDFINGER myth. The "myth" tested here was if it could lead to an _allergic reaction_, and as it turns out Kari isn't allergic to the paint (like the original Tin Man *was*, so the paint nearly killed him).
      But the whole point of the episode was to show Kari in a skimpy dress.

      Those three entires were really ***** lame mythbusting, more like a list of the WORST mythbusts than the top ones.

      It happened in the week Doom 3 came out, I just bought a super drive the day before I got D3, I put in disc 1 of D3 and about half way through the install my drive starting speeding up like a power drill. I didn't know wait to do so i pushed the button on the keyboard to open the drive and before i could KABOOM!! my D3 was all over the room. I was scared ***** less and sad at the same time, luckily Fry's was nice enough to replace my drive and D3 and to this day it hunts me to play D3.

      I wonder if the style of bikini was mandated by Kari's preferences, tv ratings, availability of silver bikinis that fit Kari or some other reason.

      She's a hottie though.

      Personally, I liked the contrast of her red hair with the silver before she sprayed it with the silver hair stuff.

  • Osmanthus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The flaw with mythbusters is that they often try one approach to something, get a negative result, and then declare the myth busted. The quicksand episode is an example. For some reason they conclude that quicksand will be fine sand and water. But this assumption is too large. Consider for example grain silos [http://www.cdc.gov/nasd/docs/d001601-d001700/d001693/d001693.pdf] where people often die by drowing in grain. There is no water and the the particles are large, not fine. So they need to try quicksand that isnt fine, that is dry, and also combinations of granulairy before they can say anything about the myth being busted.
    • scallon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't remember paying much attention to their quicksand argument, but i can recall many episodes that made me sit back and go "Well, why the hell didn't they try _______!" I'm also not a fan of how much they use their ballistics gel dummy as a replacement for real humans. Sure the physical structure may be the same but the reaction isn't going to be the same. As an example: Remember the one where they drop the dummy through the awnings? A real human would not just have their limbs flailing around like that. They would bring their limbs close in to their bodies and inside the perimeter of the awning, or at least try.

      And i know someone, one of the infinite number of people on Digg who consider themselves a genius, is going to bring up the fact that they did drop a human through the awnings. True, but they also cut the awnings and taped them back together beforehand.

      I'm not completely knocking the show, it is entertaining, but two former special effects guys are not really qualified to consider anything impossible.

  • hbox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I'd like to see the mythbuster guys do a segment on the WTC collapse. Build a to-scale model of the steel support structure and put a to-scale few tons of weight on top and try to melt the beams with jet fuel.

    You know, since the real engineers aren't working on the models in any official capacity.

    I'm not a conspiracy nutjob. The "pull it" comment is pretty odd though. And it's obvious neocon allies pulled off the job, and it's obvious who benefitted from it. I don't doubt planes hit the wtc of course, but i think it really had to be spectacular to get the PNAC guys into Iraq with no real reason. Just like they and their Saudi Buddies have wanted to do since 97..

  • kentobean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The only flaw in the CD shattering myth is that they tested the speed by velocity. CD speeds are actually rated by TRANSFER rate, 1x speed is 150 KB/second and you can do the math from there. I'm sure it could still happen, but 40x the transfer rate does not necessarily mean 40x the actual velocity.

    • jlbraun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Indeed. IIRC, a .50 cal BMG round (12,000 ft-lbs muzzle energy) penetrated water to a depth of... 20 inches, while a puny 9mm handgun penetrated over 6 feet!

      Basically, the rifle rounds disintegrated on contact with the water. Still I think they should have tried AP rounds to see the difference.
