Until you do a bit of googling and you realize those are all public cams linked on a web site some places spexially for the purpose of people clicking and watching it, just like a blogs. You're not spying anything, the cam was put there for public viewing.

- diilbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I read about this a little while ago. It is rather old news actually ;)
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2nusblog: I've been looking at all the video stories you commented on, and in each one you posted a direct link to a fullscreen video. Did it not occur to you that flash player-based videos tend to be at a pretty low resolution, and watching them at a full 1280 washes out any discernable details into a mass of pixelated crap?
And that's why everyone diggs you down each time you post one of those goddamned links. Stop it. - CeeJayDK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@treelovinhippie : That's airport is Bornholms Lufthavn .. ( Bornholms Airport in english )

You can tell what building the webcam is located on by comparing the webcams feed and the aerial photo.
It could be fun to track down some other webcams.
If they don't say outright where they are located you can see if there a website on the same IP or look up the IP to see where in the world its located ( the last method however isn't that precise .. it's usually only good for locating the ISP that owns the IP - not the user ) - Archeologist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@treelovinhippie

Bad security and IP Network Administration can cause this stuff to be unintentionally wide open and even indexed by search bots.
- surfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Weird, I was only searching yesterday for some remotely controlled cameras on Google. There's other ways to search for them but like people have said the majority are there on purpose for tourism... they are very rarely security cameras. It's fun though and makes me want to buy one of those Axis systems just as a gadget.
That show was horribly sensationalist and amateurish though, I assume that some sort of local news programme?

moral of the story? set a password..- scottschiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I could swear this was pretty big in 2000-2001 when these AXIS cameras really started getting out there, though being quite expensive ($600?) .. the lack of security may be compared to leaving wireless routers with the web interface open, and default passwords set. I think things have improved at least somewhat since then.
This reminds me of something relatedly-nerdy I did in this area.
Mostly out of boredom (and nerdiness around that time, while I was still in school) I tried setting up a camera (capture card + camcorder) which was mounted on a "lazy susan" with a stepper motor in our living room (a house of mostly electronics engineers, go figure.) I'd wired some lights and a tornado vortex generator (heh) to a solid-state relay controlled via the parallel port on our web server, so viewers could look around our place and also turn things on and off via the web. It was interesting given the spread of tech used (hard/software) to get the job done, pretty fun.
I eventually had to take the thing down when one of my less-technical roommates freaked out, saying that a camera had followed him into the kitchen when he went to make a sandwich. ;)
/nerd rant

- Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone have a link to the program he was using to view and control them? It looked like half of a Sony logo on the screen.
- jprichard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The cams that you can control have a web interface. All you have to do is to access the page that has the cam and you have complete control of the cam. I can't remember exactly which cam has that same interface he was using but one of the cams that you can control off the top of my head would be the 2130R PTZ cam. Do a google search and you should find a few that you can control.
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, 2 questions:
1. What program was he using to control the cams
2. What are the steps to protect a home webcam- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What program was he using? IE. Or any other web browser.
How do you protect it? Put a password on it? Don't open it to the Internet at all?
