U2's Famous Joshua Tree has fallen Down [PICS]
henrywagner.org — The pictures that follow are of the famous tree featured on the sleeve of U2's Joshua Tree album. I first visited the Tree in May 1999, and returned several times once I moved to California. It was reported in the U2 fan community that the Tree had fallen down. I took a trip into the desert soon afterward, and sadly the Tree has indeed fallen.

- robbob, on 02/21/2008, -0/+11Yes, its a shame the OP edited out "In October 2000 it was reported..." to make this appear more relevant. Shameful it is.
- hurt911gen, on 02/21/2008, -4/+2I'ts a TREE. Get a life you people. Buried as lame.
- lharrod, on 02/22/2008, -3/+1It's a tree millions of people grew up familiar with, due to the success of the U2 album. When something, anything, that you've known your whole life just falls over and dies, it hurts a little.
- floorman56, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4And the Bee Girl is grown up!!!

- HairyFotr, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2Did any of these trees make a sound when they fell down?
- capiCrimm, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3perhaps if you tried something not being silent you might solve the problem?

- LovelyNeko, on 02/21/2008, -7/+1LoL... trees... who needs them anyway. They're like women, all they do is look pretty and you take the fruit when you're hungry and that's that. - haleym, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7And breaking news at that! (Zaibatsu cleverly edited this sentence from the article in his summary: 'In October 2000, it was reported in the U2 fan community that the Tree had fallen down.')

- zubin75, on 02/21/2008, -11/+25U2 is one of the best rock bands of all time. The group has shown that celebrities can use their popularity for the benefit of mankind, and they had an actual message in their music. Remember that? Music as an art? Not a money making scheme? Oh. You probably take whatever music studios decide to shove down your throat as you fork over your 20 for regurgitated, *****. - Ah. I love to rant.
- x0epyon0x, on 02/21/2008, -1/+11Bono indicts America for being hypocritical with these lines:
"Would you deny for others
What you demand for yourself?"
Bono could not be reached for comment as he was stepping off his private jet and into his limousine. - Maddox - zephyr42, on 02/21/2008, -3/+8*greatest rock bands of all time*.... Hardly I can name 100+ bands more deserving of that title.
- lharrod, on 02/22/2008, -2/+2You're crazy. How many bands have as many hits as U2? How many bands have been around as long as they have and still make hit albums? How many bands continue to play what they like, and not sell out in their later years? My guess is you're part of the My Chemical Romance crowd, and that you still watch MTV and listen to whatever they tell you is cool. U2 will outlast any popular band today, and will be selling out arenas when your one-hit wonder bands flash back to obscurity.
- Smaulz, on 02/21/2008, -5/+4I think we've all had enough of celebrities using their popularity "for the benefit of mankind". Shut up and act or sing, whatever the hell we're paying your dumb ass for and keep your freakin' politics to yourself!
- HairyFotr, on 02/22/2008, -1/+2A neutral band can get more fans because there is no actual content to disagree with, so they are only disliked if they really suck or if they don't get enough(any) advertising from the people who run the popular music industry... but it's also harder to get the fans they want - and being an idol to people you might despise on the inside, but you're not supposed to say anything because it brings you loads of cash is not the best of feelings... but stupid fans + papparazzi is called the cost of fame these days. Also, being famous is becoming way too analogous with selling yourself out.
On the other hand... with bands that do have strong lyrics, it's a shame that sometimes the music, and even the tone of the singing are awesome... but then the lyrics are so against what I stand for that I can't really enjoy those songs.
But I'd rather hear strong songs that I don't agree with, than some gibberish or another love song that wasn't really written for anyone. Popular music has taken a wrong turn... it has no real energy, it doesn't bring out any emotions, and sometimes the lyrics just don't make any sense. (and no, emotion in music does not equal emo music).- Smaulz, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1I'm not talking about the music, I'm talking about the extracurricular activities. Political music has always been, and always will be, a mainstay of popular culture. What makes me want to puke is when they start preaching to the TV cameras with their sickening "holier-than-thou" attitudes, (i.e. Bono).

- mangiafico, on 02/21/2008, -8/+2There's no shame in being a former fan.
- paperclipsNsoup, on 02/21/2008, -1/+4yes there is
- fluxion, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1no, that was a classic album. it doesnt matter how much they suck now.
- solid12345, on 02/21/2008, -10/+4U2 is alot like Radiohead, both overrated elevator and k-mart music.
- zephyr42, on 02/21/2008, -4/+5except... radiohead is good and I don't know anyone who would describe them as overrated.
- borez, on 02/21/2008, -5/+6U2 is nothing ***** like Radiohead, please do not even mention them in the same sentence??
Radiohead>>>>U2- soupnrc, on 02/21/2008, -4/+2U2 > Radiohead
Oh wait, that's my opinion...
However, I do REALLY REALLY like Radiohead. But U2 is my all time favorite. That's all.
- soupnrc, on 02/21/2008, -4/+2U2 > Radiohead
- replikhant, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1you know, Radiohead covers Sunday Bloody Sunday at their live shows.
- borez, on 02/21/2008, -5/+6U2 is nothing ***** like Radiohead, please do not even mention them in the same sentence??

- soupnrc, on 02/21/2008, -6/+5Anyone that thinks U2 is not a good band does not truly know anything about music. U2 is arguably one of the greatest bands of all time and not to mention my all time favorite.
And in response to solid12345's comment "U2 is alot like Radiohead, both overrated elevator and k-mart music."
It is much, MUCH more than elevator music. If you don't like it, that's your opinion, but U2 and Radiohead are both amazing, influential bands that have done wonderful things for the world of music. Oh, and "a lot" is two words, not one... haha- Lemethe, on 02/22/2008, -2/+2lol U2 sucks
- jcm267, on 02/21/2008, -41/+37I like U2. Who do you listen to?

- noahhoward, on 02/21/2008, -5/+4Is it? I hadn't heard.
- sarixe, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3i thought it was hip to be like bono, and we were rebelling because bono was hip... oh well. i guess i'll start liking bono now.

That's $42 million more dollars than you have raised you CLOWN!- OwdenBowden, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1That's Bonos Amx bill for a weekend. Wake UP.
- JamesMatt, on 02/21/2008, -1/+5Bono's charity event raises $42 million
- OwdenBowden, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1I Never trust a person that has two first names for their full name and for there online name - SO with that in mind James Matt - Go suck Bonos dick because he cares and he is ONE.
He is a ***** BS artist hypocrite. Just because you are riding the Bono U2 Peace Train after the fact (because you think its "Cool") doesn't give you liberty to make fun of CLOWNS. Clowns have feelings too and until you see it your Clown predigest just goes to hurt all the clowns in the world. The fact is that Clowns are funny creatures and you are just sad. Sad for believing in a pied piper and then having someone come and tell you the truth causes you hurt so you then take it out on the Clowns of the world. Well I say SHAME ON YOU. SHAME. SHAME. SHAME.
PS - Get a life.
- usrlocalbin, on 02/21/2008, -20/+31He is still a tool.
- jerrycan, on 02/21/2008, -9/+6Is he an axe?
- sully213, on 02/21/2008, -4/+21You're all so confused here. Maynard James Keenan is a Tool. Bono is U2. And we're all just Village People.
I'm sorry....that was soooo bad. I'm retiring now.- SkippyDoorknob, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2I though we are the world?
- DrywallThief, on 02/21/2008, -3/+1Would you like to glide on
Slide a mile six inches at a time on Maynard's diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick
- AdamMPkins, on 02/21/2008, -2/+4yeah...I saw that episode of South Park too!
- uberchaoslord, on 02/21/2008, -2/+9Triumph the insult comedy dog has an interesting take on Bono. His charity work seems to peak whenever he has a new album to sell.
- boombye, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3Well in his own autobiography he claims that one of his nick names growing up was the "Anti-Christ" by friends and relatives while he was still a teen, so maybe he's just an evil bastard that uses charity for attention. Ah who knows..
- zephyr42, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!!!!!
- ObeseSnake, on 02/21/2008, -2/+5A tool that changes the world perhaps, even if in the slightest way is, I'm sure, much more than what you did for the world today.
- suzywang3000, on 02/22/2008, -1/+0he made the world worse tho'. I just got on with my life.
- JoeDiggsIt, on 02/21/2008, -3/+2Bono hasn't done *****. Anyone can walk up to a podium and say "Let's help the Africans.... Let's try to bet genocide. Yaaay."
- desmondregan, on 02/21/2008, -3/+1hes made of ***** literally
- kaplanfx, on 02/22/2008, -1/+1yeah like 80 courics.
- sljepi, on 02/21/2008, -4/+2Why is he a tool? Because he donates money and actually cares for other people? You're watching too much South Park...
- jmg703, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Is it because he gives a minuscule % of his money just to make him look "worldly" and "caring"even though if someone else made the same relative % of donation from their net worth they would be just another random person?
- Grindelwald, on 02/21/2008, -28/+17At least he contributes his time and money, in helping people in Africa during the G8.
- insideblackcar, on 02/21/2008, -35/+43Great Album :)
- DeadSkinMask, on 02/21/2008, -15/+5Negative.
- Daniel591992, on 02/21/2008, -16/+107Just wondering, why do so many people (on digg) hate U2?
- MacEnvy, on 02/21/2008, -19/+49I've listened to a lot of their music, and I can't find one redeeming quality to their entire body of work. It just doesn't do anything for me - listening to U2 is genuinely an unpleasant experience for me.
But I can't speak for others. I'm sure there are a few neocon trolls on here who don't like the fact that Bono cares about the world outside of himself (see suzywang3000 above).- jcm267, on 02/21/2008, -12/+22To each his own, but I love Bono's voice and I like their style and most of their songs.
- pnunn, on 02/21/2008, -5/+5I would be more down with the hipness of bono bashing if I thought anyone who did it is half as involved with politics and activism as he is... Honestly, I think the fashionability of hipsters and such hating him has far exceeded anything he actually might have done "wrong."
- MacEnvy, on 02/21/2008, -2/+6It isn't that hard to be an activist when you have hundreds of millions of dollars, no actual job, and a built-in following of millions of people. But yeah, it's nice that he does it. I just don't think he's some sort of superhero for doing so.
- replikhant, on 02/22/2008, -1/+2I guess we do not understand how they have been around for almost 30 years, and people still care enough to hate them or love them. Which of Today´s bands will be remembered in 5 years? Must be envy.
- jcm267, on 02/21/2008, -12/+22To each his own, but I love Bono's voice and I like their style and most of their songs.
- mywhitenoise, on 02/21/2008, -31/+46I hate them because Bono is an arrogant prick who thinks he's the best front man since Ian Curtis. Bono's a joke.
- Oysterville, on 02/21/2008, -6/+19A lot of folks took his over-the-top character in the mid-90's as that being him. Being a longtime fan who has followed them peripherally I can say that the real Bono is not like that.
- borez, on 02/21/2008, -15/+9No he's worse. " hey man, look at me, I'll phone the president mid gig!!!" Tosser
- borez, on 02/21/2008, -5/+2Ha, this comment has gone from +10 to -2 diggs in 20mins. I guess those on the ball dislike U2 while those catching up actually like them.
ROFL - MacEnvy, on 02/21/2008, -2/+4@borez
Digg is indeed an incredible tool for observing social dynamics. - borez, on 02/21/2008, -3/+1Yes..yes it is.
- borez, on 02/21/2008, -5/+2Ha, this comment has gone from +10 to -2 diggs in 20mins. I guess those on the ball dislike U2 while those catching up actually like them.

- StellarlyAstral, on 02/21/2008, -4/+2Ian Curtis is a joke.
- mywhitenoise, on 02/21/2008, -2/+5He led Joy Division who later became New Order. 2 bands who were 10x more influential and made 10x better music. No one can make music like New Order.
- fantasmacanino, on 02/21/2008, -2/+1So he's better than Bono because his band mates went on to make a good band after his suicide? Sorry, but Ian Curtis is very over rated by kids who know no better and who like to attack other people's music taste.
- boombye, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4Like the time he only did an episode of Conan if the whole time he was being interviewed, and that's what happened. A whole episode of Conan with Bono
- Oysterville, on 02/21/2008, -6/+19A lot of folks took his over-the-top character in the mid-90's as that being him. Being a longtime fan who has followed them peripherally I can say that the real Bono is not like that.
- Sirocco, on 02/21/2008, -11/+23It probably has something to do with their drift into mediocrity about midway through the 90s.
- grakker, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2I'd say it happened in the late 80's, but yeah... what Sirocco said.
- replikhant, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1I liked the 90s phase better.
- digitallysick, on 02/21/2008, -7/+7I really don't care for them at all,not sure why? i was all in the 90's
- borez, on 02/21/2008, -20/+25Because they've been using the same chord and song structure since 1982
- sarixe, on 02/21/2008, -5/+5no they haven't.
- borez, on 02/21/2008, -7/+4Yes they have. U2 Fanboy what an accolade
- replikhant, on 02/22/2008, -2/+2borez, why don´t you crawl under a rock and continue listening to your Backstreet boys cds.
- replikhant, on 02/22/2008, -1/+2borez, give us a break. Why the hell are you commenting when it is obvious youve never listened to them?
- sarixe, on 02/21/2008, -5/+5no they haven't.
- customer, on 02/21/2008, -27/+13Because they are no talent ass clowns.
- Daniel591992, on 02/21/2008, -3/+5Well, that sure helps...
- meruru, on 02/21/2008, -3/+67Because any band you mention on Digg will get the same response.
- ostracize, on 02/21/2008, -1/+8Nirvana...
- replikhant, on 02/22/2008, -2/+5Nirvana sucks because Kurt did not have the balls to accept that Pearl Jam´s VS kicked their In Utero ass so bad.
- KingGorilla, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2the beatles?
- ostracize, on 02/21/2008, -1/+8Nirvana...
- DrunkenSavior, on 02/21/2008, -3/+25Because as much as they don't want to admit it, the 'socal' internet scene is all about hero worship and its polar opposite, infamy. Most of them don't have an opinion on U2's music (based on actually listening to their catalog) but they hate Bono.
- tecunx, on 02/21/2008, -4/+3U2 has been hated ever since 1983. How they have manged to not give a ***** about the rest of the world´s opinions may be the secret of their success.
- jerrycan, on 02/21/2008, -9/+7I liked Boy, October and War. Most of that utter crap from that time was new wave *****. and U2 stood out one of the few bands I could listen to that wasn't metal or new wave. After that (unforget...fire and onward, I didn't care much for them...
- sarixe, on 02/21/2008, -2/+4don't like the joshua tree then... shame...
- caffiend, on 02/21/2008, -7/+18Because of that stupid iPod commercial we all heard about 987340891743507324 times.
- noahhoward, on 02/21/2008, -3/+8http://youtube.com/watch?v=8EDuK46ZqFM
- grakker, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1I had never heard of him before. Thanks for the link.
- JavertHolmes, on 02/21/2008, -6/+50There's a few reasons:
1) South Park made fun of him one episode, therefore it's "cool" to hate him.
2) Then there's music "elite" that follow the "music I like/music you like" venn diagram pictured here: http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/12219
3) There's people who don't like his "do-good" public image. He uses his fame to get at politicians, which seems like an intelligent way to use your fame as long as it's for a good purpose. While he's out there using his fame to get politician to do Good Things, others are using theirs to get into the hottest clubs, hottest restaurants, etc. What's more useful?
4) People on Digg and other sites see people hating on him and figure he must be worthy of being hated upon.- sarixe, on 02/21/2008, -5/+1that venn diagram doesn't even make sense... "music i like" encompasses "music i used to like". sounds like it tried to be an insult to your taste in music, but then miserably failed.

someone on the internet is ... wrong!- calgone, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2It's digg's stupid bug where it appends characters that aren't part of a URL on to the URL. If you take off the period it works, but thanks for the other link!
- calgone, on 02/21/2008, -4/+10Actually he's counting in Gaelic in that song (native language of Ireland). He counts 1,2,3,4.
- pnunn, on 02/21/2008, -2/+13See JavertHolmes above and feel like a jerk. Cause the truth is, most people are just worried their "cool" friends might see them liking on U2. People who hate Bono need to think about what is wrong in their life that they are mad at a man who tries to help out. U2 have as much relevance as anyone can and an ipod commercial is the WEAKEST reason ever to dismiss the catalog of a band as long running as they are.
Then again, everyone here is doing it... maybe I should hate them too! - carlvjack, on 02/21/2008, -4/+10Because they are an older band who still have tons of fans but diggers are typically made up of the kids of those adult fans. Since their parents love them their kids have to hate them because liking something your parents like makes you uncool.

- tecunx, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4U2 has had its periods of love and hate. After Rattle and Hum they were abhorred. Achtung Baby was a shocking comeback. Pop was even more hated, but they managed to get up again with the All that you can leave behind.
- phildixon, on 02/21/2008, -3/+2I can't explain it. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Bono and it seems like they make good songs but there is something a little too simple and wholesome about them that I just can't get behind musically. I don't hear struggling, or pain or conflict in there music even if they are singing about struggling, conflict and pain. They don't write bad songs, they just don't maintain my interest very long. With that said, I have very similar unexplainable tendencies to dislike the Dave Mathews Band.
- solid12345, on 02/21/2008, -2/+4Because his glasses are famous.
- roebeet, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6Any rock band that is as famous, and long-lasting, as U2, is going to be hated - especially by kids whose MOM grew up with them. Sure, Bono's an egomaniac - but that kind of comes with the territory. When I was a kid in the 1980s, I loved to hate all the 50s and 60s bands my parents liked. And my kids are doing the same thing to me, now. In 20 years, U2 will be the new Rolling Stones.
- grakker, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Oh, I think the Rolling Stones will still be rolling.
- Spritti, on 02/22/2008, -0/+0why wont the rolling stone just ***** die already. I grew up listening to u2 as it was my mom's favorite band. I got really sick of it but lately i've been listening to alot of old u2 and i have new appreciation for it. Incredible band, period.
- bwtaha, on 02/21/2008, -6/+1i don't like U2 because i'm 20 and i listen to bands like Incubus, Sublime, The Beatles, Hendrix and other talented people
and u2 has never in my 20 years produced a song that i enjoyed listening to, or for that matter a song that didn't cause me to immediately change the station
"On this page, you see a little girl giggling at a hippopotamus, I wonder why?"- Spritti, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1lol your an idiot. Im 21 and Remember all kinds of solid U2 songs. Hell i can vividly remember the release of zooropa. So let me get this straight, your 20 but the beatles were producing hits in your lifetime? Wasnt Hendrix dead before you were even born lol.
- Lemethe, on 02/22/2008, -3/+3I hate U2 because i am a musician. You dont have to film yourself doing good things, just do them and stfu.
- MacEnvy, on 02/21/2008, -19/+49I've listened to a lot of their music, and I can't find one redeeming quality to their entire body of work. It just doesn't do anything for me - listening to U2 is genuinely an unpleasant experience for me.

- tecunx, on 02/21/2008, -1/+4It is an incredibly long career though. How many bands can match that?
- bundwallah, on 02/21/2008, -4/+3Hmm... Let's see.
Rolling Stones 40+ years.
Judas Priest. 30+ yearsd
UFO 35+ years.
Scorpions 30+ years.
Black Sabbath 25+ years.
etc. etc.
Oh and each and every one of those bands are so much better and so less pretentious than U2. :)
Oh and...Bono's a tool!! Carbon tax my ass you chode.- replikhant, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1what a retarded answer. No one gives a ***** about any of those bands except of course the Stones. All of them can only manage to pull off reunion tours. By the way,Why didn´t you mention The Culture Club , Poison and Ratt? Yeah , they have been together for long, but would any of them get more than 10 DIGS????
- bundwallah, on 02/25/2008, -0/+0Oh really? I'll give you the Stones. Maybe no one gives a ***** about the rest of those bands in the US anymore. Overseas, those bands still sell out concerts. Each and every one of those bands are trailblazers and continue to be relevant. *****, even a non Ozzy version of Black Sabbath is selling out on tour (now called Heaven * Hell)
My response to tecux was simple. I revealed how many bands can match U2's longevity. And I name but a few and there are many more. So, take your head outta Bono's ass and get a clue that not all bands are in the lexicon like U2 is, but it doesn't mean they are less worthy or relevant. U2 in the old days was good and have made some damn good albums. Now they're so ***** pretentious its' sickening. Bono should stick to music and not going on a holier than ***** though world tours; save the earth, save the whales, save the etc....man...just save it for someone who cares!! It's hard to take the guys stance on the environment when he has his ***** hat flown overseas to a concert. His hat??!?! What ***** world does he live in? I think the South Park episode summed him up best. FULL OF *****. That's it! I'm done!! Goodnight!!

They still write some of the best music. So bite me... if you don't like it, keep your OPINION to yourself.- perral1, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Hrmmm.....
I have to say, that's kind of a pretentious comment. Everyone else has just as much right to share their opinions.
I like U2, new and old, and that's my opinion; others will have a different opinion. So what? We can discuss, etc...
That said, many of the generic insulting comments floating around seem uncalled for. If you don't like U2/Bono/etc, at least give a reason; calling them clowns etc. is useless.
- perral1, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Hrmmm.....

- magoblygoo, on 02/21/2008, -15/+7Just so you all know, Joshua trees are the epitomy of depressing. I was stationed in 29 Palms, CA. and every time i saw those stupid things two things happened: 1, someone tried to quote some passage in the bible stating that those trees will only grow in two places, the entrance to heaven and the gateway to hell. and 2, i wanted to go on a joshua tree kill spree. there i said it and now i feel better. oh yeah, I HATE U2. YOU SUCK BONO. ok, now i feel better
- PoserDad, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Huh.. I've never heard of those Bible passages....

- MindTrigger, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5Joshua trees are ***** awesome. I love driving through areas with them because they look so alien. What you meant to say was that YOU and YOUR LIFE were the epitome of depressing. I highly doubt the trees had anything to do with how bad your life sucked at the time.
- grakker, on 02/22/2008, -0/+129 Palms is a bit of a hell hole. Most jarheads are sent there to harden the ***** up before going someplace. Or most jarheads who go there. Whatever. I love driving through the area. Even camping every few years. But to have spend more than a week out there would drive me crazy.
