WHAT?! NINE THOUSAND! - adrian67, on 02/17/2008, -2/+75It amazes me how they build stuff like that. You have been sentenced to community service, here's ya broom lad, just sweep this bridge. lol
- benpattersonca, on 02/17/2008, -3/+73The poor kids on family trips.... no pit stops for HOURS! "Just hold it Timmy - I don't CARE if your bladder explodes, don't you DARE pee on the seats!'
- anderzole, on 02/17/2008, -3/+41what amazing feats of engineering..
- dcbebop, on 02/17/2008, -0/+36Driving over the Chesapeake Bay bridge is kinda crazy because they have a lane on one of the bridges that switches depending on traffic. So during DC outbound traffic (evening) you've got 2 lanes of oncoming traffic with no divider on your left, and a small wall on your right separating you from a couple hundred foot plummet into the chesapeake.
Quite an interesting experience, those who have done it I'm sure will agree. - teddyrux, on 02/17/2008, -1/+36This reminds me of my time playing the original Sim City trying to bring power across the water so I wouldn't have to create a new power plant.
- nerd64, on 02/17/2008, -1/+33The longest bridge was only 23 miles. I'm sure Timmy can hold it in for 20 minutes.
- cygnus2112, on 02/17/2008, -3/+27I will laugh at all of your silly bridges once I've completed the construction of my hover car.
- hugeposuer, on 02/17/2008, -1/+21The Causeway in Louisiana takes FOREVER.
- sdellboy, on 02/17/2008, -1/+20"A bridge is a structure built to span a gorge, valley, road, railroad track, river, body of water, or any other physical obstacle. Designs of bridges will vary depending on the function of the bridge and the nature of the terrain where the bridge is to be constructed."
They look like bridges, they smell like bridges....they're f**king bridges. - Sundress, on 02/17/2008, -4/+22I've only been on the Florida Keys bridge. I just kept thinking, it would really suck if it collapsed when you were driving on it.
- rfilsinger, on 02/17/2008, -0/+17I drive over the Confederation Bridge about once a month. It takes about 15 minutes, and costs $40.
- otakushark, on 02/17/2008, -0/+16Lake Pontchartrain is so long that when you're in the middle, you can't see land at either end.
- ryan83189, on 02/17/2008, -1/+17no, he just has very small man-balls.
- PabloMac, on 02/17/2008, -2/+15I wonder why some of those bridges incorporate such sweeping curves, when we all know what the shortest distance between two points is.
- sdcarter, on 02/17/2008, -0/+12Yep, I do it at least a few times each summer. That bridge is one of the biggest traffic pains during the summer. It's almost like the boat show and state government are taking place at the same time... Friday from 2:30p till Sunday 5:30p. Still, it's pretty sweet, it's pretty photogenic, sitting underneath the bridge in a boat and hearing all the traffic above you is definitely an experience, and the fishing around the support pillars is pretty good.
- rgremill, on 02/17/2008, -0/+12Shouldn't the Atchafalya Bridge in Louisiana be included in this list? According to Wikipedia it is 18.1 miles long: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atchafalaya_Basin
- wondertwins, on 02/17/2008, -2/+13he could just pee to the side cuz theres a huge body of water they are crossing
- g2g079, on 02/17/2008, -2/+13The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is the only bridge I have ever been able to spark a J at the begginning of the bridge and without any traffic delays was done smoking it with enough time for a cigarette before getting off the bridge.
- inactive, on 02/17/2008, -1/+11ITS OVER NINE THOUSAND PILINGS!
- nailbunny, on 02/17/2008, -0/+10I love that, driving on the bay bridge, in that one lane that is sometimes open to opposing traffic. It scares the christ out of everyone else, which makes it even more fun because I get to tailgate the hell out of them and feed on their fear as I drink in the glorious view. Everyone in the area should drive over the bridge at daybreak, for one time in your lives. It is beauty. Also that picture looks like total ***** and only shows one of the two bridges, so it's a very old picture.
- pak314, on 02/17/2008, -0/+10I've been on the san-mateo bridge many time. Hard to believe it is a long bridge.
- smacksaw, on 02/17/2008, -1/+9As if the hovertrain cares about that.
- kbaz, on 02/17/2008, -0/+8"...there are no borders and everything is reachable"
Don't forget the rest of the universe. I'm pretty sure we won't be leaving the Milky Way anytime soon - JusChiln425, on 02/17/2008, -0/+7You're right on... I've been on it many times! Louisiana may not have the best education system, political system, or job outlook -- but dang it, we've got the best food and bridges!
- adamb10, on 02/17/2008, -1/+7I went on the lake Pontchartrain bridge a few years ago. A half hour went by and I was like "We're STILL on this bridge on this lake?"
- superdog87, on 02/17/2008, -0/+6The causeway in New Orleans also has its own site. http://www.thecauseway.com
It has info on all the continuous work being done to keep it in working order. - spineaches, on 02/17/2008, -0/+6a lot of them don't even say how long they are.
- delgotit99, on 02/17/2008, -1/+7I had to take a piss about 5 miles in to the LA bridge. :-/
- JoaoPe, on 02/17/2008, -0/+6Maybe because of the bottom of the river
- Ipwnyou, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5Who knew there are still people who don't know about Adblock Plus?
- ixicoolaixi, on 02/17/2008, -5/+10Compensating for something there Louisiana?
- native, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5Too low? Both spans survived Katrina without much damage, as they were drivable quickly after the storm. The other bridge, the "Twin Spans" over the eastern part of Lake Pontchartrain was the one that was severely damaged, probably because it was much closer to the storm surge than the long bridge.
- skycriesx, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5Although if it did, that bridge isn't that high off the water so at least you'd have a chance versus most bridges that are 50+ up!
- bwilliams80, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5perhaps it was because you were going 15 mph?
- nailbunny, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5you're thinking of the bay bridge tunnel, connecting virginia to virginia. the william preston bay bridge connects maryland to maryland.
- davidestroy, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5PEI is a trap. Free to come over here on the bridge, but you've gotta pay to leave.
And for anyone thinking "at least there's a view", there's not. At least on the Confederation Bridge, all you can really see is the concrete barriers. But i remember the year they opened the bridge there was a "bridge walk". I swear the whole province showed up and half of Nova Scotia (that's not that many people actually). There was definitely a view then. - liah, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4Maybe to compensate for the flow of the water? Not that I know how that would affect it; it's just the only thing I can think of...
- stabbingkittens, on 02/17/2008, -2/+6Can you picture the engineers staring into the water screaming as a rouge iceberg tears towards the bridge at 3m a year?
- Servebot, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4its not that bad... been across that bridge multiple times in a day. lots of people commute to new orleans from across the causeway everyday.
- turnesol, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4Pontchartrain was a doozie.
- crossmr, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4you now if you're going to make a list of longest x..maybe include how long they all are..
9, 7, and 3 have no lengths, and I assume the name of 10 is accurate description of its length.. - phreak22, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4The Confederation Bridge has a bend and a hump (navigation span), the reason (well other than for navigation for the hump) I've been told by Strait Crossing (private owners/lessees) is that they built it like that so that it is not perceived by drivers as being so long, helps for people scared of heights/bridges. Same reason they have the large barriers so you can't see anything but the road. Nice view from a tractor trailer or a bus though.
- SubaruPowah, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3Oh yeah?! Well I'll invent the hover bridge for pointless use with your hover car!
- wondertwins, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3dictionary.com
define bridge there - twinklyJesus, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3I think they would be more angry if chartreuse or pink ice bergs were coming.
- LloydBentsen, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3Last trip through Louisiana over the holidays, I was delighted to see that y'all upgraded your public rest stops, too. They seem like overkill now. I'd almost feel comfortable sleeping there.
