- DanielShinall, on 10/22/2008, -4/+37The Tower of David with the books is sweet.
- zombiecarlin, on 10/23/2008, -1/+18Boston.com could post a gallery of gutter pics and still they would not only be diggable cause of their excellent 1 page big pic format but probably beautiful to boot.
- jetboyterp, on 10/23/2008, -3/+17Dear gawd....Number 10:
"Mexican students with bandaged eyes take part in a "night walk" (caminata nocturna in Spanish) at the ecopark Alberto, in El Alberto, state of Hidalgo, Mexico on October 4, 2008. The night walk, advertised as an extreme sport, simulates a U.S. border crossing attempt at a park run by a community with a long-lasting history of carrying out real border journeys into the United States"
You gotta be friggin' kidding...Yeah, go and celebrate large groups of people intent on leaving your country...
Not to mention..."border journeys"? How about breaking the law! Yeah...call it a "border journey"... - zadadka, on 10/22/2008, -2/+12Very impressive...I liked the Kaaba shot (and like DanielShinall) the Tower Of David.
- mstubz, on 10/22/2008, -0/+10I wonder what the bathroom situation is like at Mecca. The footnote said there were hundreds of thousands pictured. That's like ten times the number of people at a sporting event.
- Czechxican, on 10/23/2008, -1/+8You're neglecting a crucial aspect and function of these buildings.
Cathedrals were likely the biggest buildings ever encountered by people living in the middle ages. They were meant to inspire a presence of God within the viewer and also serve as a place of worship. In addition the presence of a cathedral was also a huge economic boon for the people living around it due to the influx of visitors which would come and worship. I do agree that to a certain extent the oppulence of some cathedrals is a bit over the top but you also must remember that the monks, nuns, and abbots who ran places like this did very much contribute to helping to the poor and sick. Cathedrals were a place of protection. - DeskFlyer, on 10/23/2008, -0/+6Awesome. I love night photography.
- jehan60188, on 10/23/2008, -1/+6is that plumber's butt in number 7?
- liljay2k, on 10/23/2008, -0/+4Dugg for the first picture alone.
- albyliontk, on 10/23/2008, -0/+4Stunning series of picture..... I loved the one in Petra dedicated to Luciano Pavarotti is just fantastic!
QFA: "An ancient temple is lit up with candles at a Gala Dinner to celebrate the life of the opera singer Luciano Pavarotti as part of the Salute Petra event on October 11, 2008 in Petra, Jordan. Salute Petra is a three day event that takes place on the anniversary of Pavarotti's birthday, the 12th October. Due to hiss friendship with the Jordanian Royal Family, HRH Princess Haya of Jordan and the Government of Jordan have allowed the weekend to take place at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra and will include a gala dinner and concert in the ancient city. - persianpeace, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2Great shots. Nice to see something from Iran there. People really need to learn more about Iran.
- kevyn, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2I love this site and the way it shows photos and stories, but why no Eiffel tower?
- maledei, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2as always, boston.com won't display any pictures for me. "can't find cache.boston.com" Is it beause I'm on a mac? Is it that I don't have an IE? Or that i'm not in the US? What the ***** is the damn problem. It works when I enable tor...
On a sidenote: There's a light festival in Berlin? Wow, I didn't notice. I should get out more... - mmx2000, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2Dugg for the White House looking like the cathedral in Tristram.
Well, that and the beautiful pics and elegant format boston.com always serves up. - smartsalman, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2nice pictures!! Also if anyone has seen the CN Tower in Toronto at night time, then they'd agree it would be a nice addition on that page...
- smartsalman, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2ur an ignorant bastard... arent you?

- digifuzz, on 10/23/2008, -1/+3#10 Border Crossing Training Camp FTW!
- thescimitar, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2I like that most of the images celebrated cultural and historical events... and that America's contribution was "Sex in the City"
haha!
(yes, i know there was the breast cancer one too, Sex in the City just stood out as particularly culturally retarded). - JackpotCity, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2Those pictures of Berlin are really cool.
I had a little snigger at number 11 though: The White House is illuminated in pink for breast cancer awareness.
I thought that it may be because there's a boob in office. - DanH, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2Did you just lift that comment wholesale from Religulous?
I'm an agnostic but it seems like you're just repeating something. - thcobbs, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2I thought Goliath was a black tractor-trailer rig...
- gearhead364, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2Simply beautiful.
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1Night photography rules
- inactive, on 10/23/2008, -2/+3So they simulate crossing the border to prepare for the real thing?
- Xanticom, on 10/23/2008, -1/+2And, where is Walt Disney World?
- darkvont, on 10/24/2008, -0/+1You would be surprised how clean the bathrooms is there, during the holy months additional units are specially positioned to maintain general sanitary at a proper level.
One of the more interesting things during Ramadan, when this picture was taken, hundred of thousands break their fast within the holy mosque walls, and each day for 30 days it's these units job to serve dates and Arabian coffee during sunset and within 10 minutes clean up for mughrub prayer. - below413, on 10/23/2008, -1/+2Except all the things you mentioned are businesses trying to explicitly make a profit. I go to the store and buy a TV because I want a TV. The TV store buys TVs from the maker in order to sell them for profit to make money. The TV maker buys the materials... etc... Religion is making a profit selling *****, not a goddamn TV. These people preach about helping others and living in harmony and then go and spend all their money on a giant building.
- codx999, on 10/23/2008, -1/+1Lights, camera, action!
- Frankli, on 10/23/2008, -2/+2#10 so Mexico has now turned illegal border crossing into an "extreme sport" and basically trains their students? Seems like they can put their teaching resources to better use and teach their residents how to fix their own country instead of teaching them to come to ours illegally and cause more problems while we try to fix ours.
- inactive, on 10/23/2008, -2/+2100 B-52's should carpet bomb picture #8, and #18
***** Religion its a plague on this world.
The Atheist Revolution is coming I will enjoy the day when bibles, korans, and torahs are burning in the street. - fantasticjon, on 10/23/2008, -3/+3You could say that about anything. You could say the people should not buy video games, or a television, or a jet ski or anything but necessities, but should give all their disposable income to charity. Economics is not a zero-sum game. If you build a building, you are creating jobs. That money doe not disappear, it get cycled back into the economy.
It pisses me off when self-righteous people judge other peoples expenditures. I don't judge you for the things you "waste" your disposable income on. Just because you don't agree with religious dogmas, does not make their building a bad thing.
BTW, I am an agnostic - ShoeSh1ne, on 10/23/2008, -3/+2Not to mention that many of these are hundreds of years old which would of course mean that not nearly as much was spent as you suggest.
- improllyatwork, on 10/23/2008, -3/+1siiick
- below413, on 10/23/2008, -10/+8I know I'm gonna get flamed for bringing this up but the pictures of massive religious buildings make me really mad. Do people seriously think God (if he existed) or Jesus would want us to spend buttloads of money building giant shrines to them instead of caring about one another and helping people in need? Organized religion is such a scam...
