- BlackVincent, on 05/15/2009, -0/+26That line can be a freakin' nightmare.
Another thing you can do: Hang out at the passenger drop-off and find an unscrupulous limo driver.
Couple interesting facts:
Las Vegas cabs are prohibited by law from stopping for a customer on the street ...even if the cab is empty! Taxis may only pick up at hotels and established pickup points.
Cab fares from the McCarran Airport to the Center Strip: $15
County law states that you can determine the course, or simply ask for the most direct way. Be sure to tell your driver NOT to take the tunnel on the way to the strip. It costs about $8 more this way and EVERY cabbie will attempt to do so. If he gives you attitude, start writing down his license number and he'll shut up. - johnsmith555, on 05/16/2009, -9/+28I hate twitter.
- nepidae, on 05/16/2009, -8/+22***** twitter
- inactive, on 05/16/2009, -1/+13It won't work as soon as enough people know about it.
- K4Lic0, on 05/16/2009, -1/+13I've been to Las Vegas twice and have never had a problem getting a cab. The wait at the airport and hotels were nonexistent, and the wait when I got out of a show was maybe 10 minutes. They always have an endless line of cabs waiting to pick people up.
- inactive, on 05/15/2009, -11/+19For people too lazy to call the cab company, tell them where you are, where you're going and they'll eta when they'll arrive (often in minutes). Dont know the number to Vegas Cabs? Freaking google it moron!
Seriously, not everything needs to be done on twitter. At some point in life, you actually have to speak with real people and saying things like 'lol' versus actually laughing out loud will get you cautious stares from people. Life isnt an episode of the Tom Green show. - jordanlgta, on 05/16/2009, -0/+6Cab? I took an airport shuttle for $6.50 from McCarran to the MGM Grand a month ago. It took 25 minutes from the time I stepped off the plane to the time I was at my hotel...for only $6.50...
- maz2331, on 05/16/2009, -3/+9The airport is pretty close to being a casino. It's the only one in the entire USA that I've seen with slot machines inside the concourses.
And it is very close to the casinos - stay at someplace like the MGM Grand and you could walk there, with your luggage, faster than a cab can pick you up.
If a driver ever asks "highway or local" - always say "local" if you are flying in and staying in the strip, for it is a trap question. Local is a mile maximum and highway makes the trip a driver's day. - gswarriors, on 05/16/2009, -3/+9you will eventually talk to people once the cab picks u up. why wouldn't you use this convenient service? its not about talking to people, its about a service a company is offering. its not about socializing with the person on the other line getting you a cab.
- ATL, on 06/20/2009, -0/+5WALK from MGM Grand to the McCarran Terminal? FASTER than a cab?
No, sorry, that's just not true at all.
No way I would attempt that walk with luggage on a summer day, either. - DirtyBinLV, on 05/16/2009, -0/+5Have you seen traffic on the Strip at peak times? The last thing we need is cabs stopping in the right lane to pick people up, or trying to cross 2 lanes of traffic to get to someone.
Also, the north exit to the airport is only a good route if you're staying relatively close to the airport. If you're going to north end of the strip, it's usually faster to take the tunnel and head up 15. - Hignaki, on 05/16/2009, -0/+5EVERY place in Vegas has slot machines. I go to the liquor store on the corner and IT has slot machines. You should be used to it after your first trip.
I have a good friend that lives in Las Vegas and I try to visit at least once a year. It's such a refreshing change. - d999w, on 05/16/2009, -0/+5***** everyone that replies to anyone who says ***** twitter.
- FunFactor100, on 05/16/2009, -0/+5The last two times I went to Vegas...I walked out of the terminal to see the huge line....some dude asked me if I wanted to skip the line...we went left as you go out the terminal....left around the corner....and there were taxis, limos, and shuttles. $7 for the shuttle got me to MGM in 10 mins. I've been to Vegas 3 times in the past 9 months...never waited in that crazy line.
Is the Vegas economy really improving? A concierge friend at the Venetian just got laid off last week and tells me things still bad. I think we have 2 years left before we see a bottom. Companies don't give 6-12 month severance packages to people they think they'll need to re-hire in the near future. - reed311, on 05/16/2009, -4/+9Buried as spam.
- nepidae, on 05/16/2009, -2/+6i swear to god twitter is using vc funding to get this ***** in the media.
- Tarkaan, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3Times I've been there, I walk up to a skycap with $5 and my bags and say "Is there any way I can...ya know, not wait in this line?" He takes the $5, loads my bags, and I'm off to the craps tables. I don't need to twitter jack *****.
- andehbrown, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3I'd rather wait an hour in a line for a cab if it would mean that twitter didn't exist.
- DirtyBinLV, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3The Reno airport has slot machines, too. Because you're a captive audience, I believe they set those machines as tight as they'll go.
- UncleCrapper, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3My experience was the same, and I've also been to Vegas twice. Once in 2001 and again just over a year ago. On both occasions it took longer to get my luggage into the taxi than it did to get a cab.
Likewise I never had a problem getting a taxi in Las Vegas proper during either trip, although I actually liked taking the bus. I made a point of using the Las Vegas CAT bus system to explore the rest of the city without chewing up endless dollars taking taxis. I found the bus system on the whole to be pretty well run, and I got to see a side of the city other than the major tourist areas. - Junkyarddawg, on 05/16/2009, -1/+4Inane twitterhype = autobury for lameness.
- Junkyarddawg, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3The funniest part about the twitterhype here on digg is that it's so obviously paid-for viral marketing. Dude posts a retarded submission about twittering in the shower or something stupid like that, within minutes it's got a hundred diggs and a dozen "YAY THAT'S FANTASTIC" comments.
- Lazydriver, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2Don't make fun of them, damn you! We need their money!
*Our police, fire, civil, school and prison systems is going to hell because our governor doesn't want to spend new taxes to make up for the loss of income.* - DirtyBinLV, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2Virtually every slot machine has a minimum return % option in the 82%-86% range. What really determines what the slot director sets his machines to is the amount of competition the casino has. On the Vegas Strip, most of the machines pay out 94%-98%, because if you're not hitting anything, you'll probably walk next door. Casinos that have competition within a short drive usually pay out 90%-95%. The places with nothing inside an hours drive are usually 85%-88%.
- ladyarcher85, on 05/16/2009, -1/+3If you are a frequent twitter user do you call yourself a twit or a *****?
- Lazydriver, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2I've walked from the airport to as far as The Wynn. It's a long walk, and should NEVER be attempted in Summer. Take the city bus, WHICH GOES TO THE AIRPORT, or take a cab.
- Tarkaan, on 05/17/2009, -0/+2I hope you were the guy I handed forty bucks to coming out of Hilton saying "Tropicana...NOW!" I just barely got to see Folies a year before it went dark on a permanent basis. Nice work on those little-known side streets btw. I more than made up for the solid tip on your fare at the roulette (??!?!?!?) wheel that night.
If you don't remember, I was the really drunk guy mumbling something about Star Trek and a Warp Core Breech. - nogami, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2The problem is that the shuttles wait until they're full, then go to each hotel in sequence, both picking up and dropping off.
If you're near the end of the list, you can wait a LONG time. I had a co-worker that spent 2 hrs on the shuttle before getting to her hotel. She said "never again". - inactive, on 05/16/2009, -3/+5You lost me at "Life isnt an episode of the Tom Green show."
- Vegascabbie, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2I do freakin remember you...hahahaha well what can I say but a job well done...
Thanks. - inactive, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2Kevin Rose has said on Diggnation that the "twitter guy" is a friend of his. The hype on Digg shouldn't surprise anyone. It should open an eye or two, though.
- louiebaur, on 05/15/2009, -7/+8LOL.
I am in vegas right now. This sounds like a cool way to hail a cab. I actually rode my motorcycle here and have no use for one but will keep it in mind for next time;-) - asgardshill, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1Hilarious, isn't it. On my last trip to Vegas, one slot machine inside the smoking area paid for the entire gig (including the $1200 I lost at the tables during my stay). Three pulls, $2600.
And I've never had a problem getting a cab at McCarran. With the stinko economy, they're the ones who seem to be endlessly lined up. - TravelChannel, on 05/15/2009, -4/+5Vegas travelers check it out, great tip!!
- doug209, on 05/16/2009, -1/+2FTA: "As the economy begins to improve" LOL
- antoniuk, on 05/16/2009, -2/+3I just... oh wait I live here. Tourists...
- aristotle0dude, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1If you are spending quite a bit of money on a hotel, use the limo or even if a "free" one is not provided, arrange to have a limo pick you up. What will it cost you? 40-50 bucks? I know that limos are now available at the Vancouver airport to downtown for under 50 bucks Canadian which is cutting into the cab driver business.
- inactive, on 05/16/2009, -2/+3"I don't care who twatted who! I've been waiting here for two goddamn hours!"

Here's a fun fact: Nevada doesn't have a minimum payback percentage requirement, but most tribal jurisdictions have at least an 85% RTP requirement. - JasonHilton, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1Most hotels will send a free limo to pick you up at the airport if you book a suite.
- WhistlinTom, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1yeah.... I took the bus all week and never had to wait for a cab.
- ryrocker, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1***** in taxis!
- Vegascabbie, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1THE VEGASCABBIE HIMSELF here and imagine this if you will, in a few weeks it will be well over 110 here in my fine city, so even if you have to spend 10 mins walking the zigg zagg just to get to the no wait line dragging your luggage. If you do what I suggest (and that is not to twitter me all the time) use the tip, find a skycap and tip him a 5 and go to yellow #1 for gods sake. Well as most of you point out the OBVIOUS sure go spend 400 on a Suite and wait for your Limo dude for free that you have to tip 20 bucks...go ahead. And to find out other kool tips follow the link to thevegascabbie.com and enjoy the podcasts...there is some good ***** in there.
- monroej88, on 05/16/2009, -1/+1One day on Digg: "How to use Twitter to have a look at the plumbing"
- xino, on 05/16/2009, -1/+1Twitter is great, but no one should ever attempt to use twitter to bypass digg. Digg serves a number of purposes that twitter doesn't. The only purpose they have in common is they syndicate information, but they do it differently and digg's way is useful in a way that twitter isn't and vice versa.
- Nothlit, on 05/16/2009, -1/+1Did you come up with that one all by yourself?
- LargeStack, on 05/16/2009, -1/+1Well, now I can see myself using Twitter™.
I don‘t care to tell people about my mundane personal details but save me time and I‘m in.
I hate waiting in line to no end.
Save me time at an airport and I‘ll twitter my ass off. -
