- lofi4life, on 04/01/2009, -3/+73Slightly over the top with the HDR?
- Llanowar, on 04/02/2009, -2/+42I bet those photos would look tons better if they weren't in HDR.
- wonkavsn, on 04/02/2009, -0/+33The worst part about going to hell is that everything is excessively tonemapped.
- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -2/+29HDR is so 2008.
- Ersh777, on 04/01/2009, -0/+24Some of those are really cool and look like something out of a creepy zombie video game, others are just bad HDR.
- Battlecry, on 04/02/2009, -2/+25Opened 1903. Closed 1994. Shot in HDR to be creative and edgy just like everyone else 2009.
- Dumbledorito, on 04/02/2009, -0/+18So someone has invented a kind of photography that looks like overdone CGI? Not exactly a step forward...
- daqq, on 04/02/2009, -3/+20Alternate Title: More Overdone HDR Images on Flickr
Interesting subject matter, but the HDR just kills it. - baskin, on 04/02/2009, -2/+19i hope the photographer would consider taking some pictures without the HDR effects and posting those. These are cool images, but I don't like to look at pictures that resemble pre-rendered video game backgrounds.
- Tyrghast, on 04/02/2009, -0/+14Oh god HDR overload, some of those pics just look bad...
- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -2/+15The majority of those look so fake. No HDR would have looked a lot better.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 04/02/2009, -0/+11Yeah, it actually ruined the set.
It took potentially creepy/cool/interesting images and made them look like a cartoon.
Future reference, if you're going for creepy, cartoons probably aren't it. - ericz25, on 04/02/2009, -1/+10Time to load up the shotgun.
- ivansusanin, on 04/02/2009, -0/+9looks like a bad shroom trip
- bbear, on 04/02/2009, -0/+8This photo set makes HDR look like *****. Horrible looking pictures.
- MScrip, on 04/02/2009, -0/+6I'd love to see the raw, untouched photos.
Oh, here's some:
http://www.abandoned-britain.com/PP/hellingly/1.ht ... - Bulwer, on 04/02/2009, -0/+6As someone who worked in a building in the grounds for 5 years and who still lives a mile away, I can confirm that the pictures portray a gross injustice of the way it was. I suppose it wasn't a picnic when it opened (or at any stage I suppose) but it had its own cinema and tennis courts and playing field. The buildings were used to shoot hospital scenes for films and TV until it fell into disrepair with everyone waiting on what will be done with the land. There have been rumours of a massive housing estate for years but nothing has ever come of it - partly because there is still one active building - a secure site for low category dangerous patients..
Oh - and the railway station now sits on the Cuckoo Walk - a cycle path that follows the route of the old railway line. - f54280, on 04/02/2009, -3/+9Anyone have non-sucky images of this ? Those HDR looks so photoshopped, it is not even funny.
- SilverBack101, on 04/02/2009, -1/+7I have to say I enjoy HDR every now and then, however, I do believe the pictures would have been a whole lot scarier if they weren't in the HDR format.
- TheNepenthe, on 04/02/2009, -0/+5Wow, I'd so love to go there and pretend I'm in a scary video game.
- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -0/+5Why doesn't anyone take the stuff with them when they abandon these things?? I saw at least 2 good wheelchairs and a ton of chairs/desks.
- MawnLower, on 04/02/2009, -0/+5Well *****! I don't see how staying in there would help anyone get LESS crazy.
- romanywg, on 04/02/2009, -0/+5Thankyou for all your comments. Everyone seems to have an opinion on HDR and how it should be used and no two opinions are ever the same. We are all experts all of a sudden.
Anyway, as requested I have now uploaded the originals and placed them next to the HDR shots so you can now make up your mind which works best for you. I know which works best for me and in Hellingly I think you can get away with being OTT. But then again that's just my opinion.
Thanks for looking.
Romanywg - exscape, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4Actually, HDR imaging doesn't HAVE to ruin images. It's just that people "kind of" overuse it, badly. It can produce images that are impossible without it, and without them looking like CGI.
- Indy16, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4Looks more like Severalls Hostpital, Colchester, Essex, UK, to me.
http://www.abandoned-britain.com/PP/severalls/5.ht ... - LingNoi, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4It's made it look ugly.
- DarkoKun, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4Imagination FTW!
- TheSuperunknown, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4Nothing like ham-fisted HDR to ruin the tone of an image. I'll never understand how all the halos and clipped channels equate to increased dynamic range in these people's heads.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4/s?
- daqq, on 04/02/2009, -1/+5The reason most of us feel the way we do about HDR is due to the fact that its given so much praise, when all the photographer did was take multiple exposures of a scene, and then run them through a computer program to create an over-processed image. Many of us feel that the "HDR" incorporation takes away from the image when its done to the point most of these images are.
These images certainly have great subject matter, but the execution negates that. No different than over-saturated or over-exposed photographs. While these techniques can be used sparingly to enhance an image, too much will ruin it. - inactive, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4where is this place at and why was it abandoned?
- mheyk, on 04/02/2009, -1/+4because normal photos of a creepy place would be to... /\/ormal
- Greengoo, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q& ...
- BTF2, on 04/02/2009, -2/+5Agree totally with the sentiment but I think the Daguerreotypes' day was long gone by 1939: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daguerreotype
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 04/02/2009, -1/+4Thanks for the ad hominem flavored straw man, but I still think excessive HDR like this still makes images look cartoony and fake. Maybe that's appropriate in some situations, but here, for example, it is a little frustrating to see a full set of otherwise interesting subject matter rendered mundane by a gratuitous application of an increasingly cliched processing technique.
Though, as long as we're attacking eachother's character, I wonder what it says about you that you feel the need to admonish a group of like thinkers by expressing extreme disdain for their opinions as well as cynical explanations for them and then accuse them of trying to look cynical and detached from a group. - astrotrain, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Take a virtual walk around another old hospital and building:

Romanywg - 4rp4n3t, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2They're right there, on the Flickr page, though it's possible they have been uploaded since the photographer saw these comments!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/romanywg/3406039225/i ... - BuenoCabra, on 04/02/2009, -2/+4I'm still not /exactly/ sure what HDR is, even though I've read up on it. I just know that it makes the real world look like an Xbox 360 game. Which is less exciting than pictures that look like real things.
Oh, and you got film history PWND. - DarkoKun, on 04/02/2009, -3/+5Hey guys me too! Want to create a myspace group for people who saved this as a wallpaper?
- 3rdDay, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2They actually thought Hellingly was a good name for an asylum? Paging Doctor Death. And, yeah, great location but better pics, please.
- gustove, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Destroyed and worn down subjects always look better in HDR... These definitely an erie Gears of War feel.
Nice Work! - Nerfdude, on 04/02/2009, -2/+4i couldn't believe this wasn't box art for an 80's slasher.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3564/3371640904_025 ... - geauxtig3rs, on 04/02/2009, -1/+3AAARRRGGGHHH....THE HDR!!!! IT BURNS!!!!
Seriously....when are photoshop kiddies gonna realize that pictures that making a picture looks REAL is more important than making it look cool.
The originals were lovely by themselves... - RadiantSilver, on 04/02/2009, -1/+3I like the overdone HDR, and the originals equally. Thanks for posting, I think this is totally awesome and above criticism.
- TheSuperunknown, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2HDR is supposed to look real. Specifically, it's supposed to counteract the limited dynamic range of digital photosensors, so that you don't have clipped highlights or shadows. For all intents and purposes a proper HDR photo should not scream at you.
Instead, people use an extreme approach to HDR to deep fry their photos so they look like something out of a video game. - Bulwer, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2http://www.countyasylums.com/mentalasylums/helling ...
This is a good history and also shows Bowhill where I used to work! - kgceltsg2k, on 04/02/2009, -3/+5Well I just got a new desktop wallpaper.
- Tr33fiddy, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Must. Compress. Tone. More.
- 4rp4n3t, on 04/02/2009, -1/+3You *are* joking right?
