5 Incredible Works of Insane Architectural Genius [+PICS]
weburbanist.com — These five amazing buildings were each primarily the work of a single eccentric individual with a bizarre vision, loads of ambition and way too much time on their hands. In many cases the structures took decades (or even lifetimes) to complete. Pictures and videos included!

- suxmonkey, on 03/03/2008, -1/+26Now just imagine what all five of these guys could build if they worked together ... a wooden tower spaceship? A skyscraper cathedral made out of recycled yard waste? The sky is apparently not the limit.
- karenben, on 03/03/2008, -1/+5Imagine if all these were collected in one place
- jhatcher16, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1Why, they'd be slightly closer together!

- roadnottaken, on 03/03/2008, -2/+3Awesome!
- zouze, on 03/03/2008, -27/+1hi, I have dig you. can dig me too?
http://digg.com/design/Artificial_Life_in_Space_Ex ...- digitalpencil, on 03/03/2008, -1/+11Oh for the love of God! Seriously, where the ***** have all you people come from?! This is not myspace, digging comments and articles does nothing other than possibly inflate your digital ego. It's as simple as this: if you like something, digg it. if you dislike something, bury it.
- colonelbuckshot, on 03/03/2008, -1/+10I just buried it, along with the rest of your submissions
- DeeprBlue, on 03/03/2008, -0/+13Reading the title, I immediately thought of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona by Gaudi.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagrada_Fam%C3%ADlia
Gaudi was most certainly considered crazy when he began building it and it's taken over a hundred years to finish his creation (and still not finished!). But no doubt it is a work of insane architectural genius.- BurnTees, on 03/03/2008, -0/+4I was about to comment...how is Gaudi not on this list? A lot of these actually look like they were greatly influenced by Gaudi.
- steel66, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1Indeed, Gaudi should be number one on the list
- lp66, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1Exactly. Gaudi, Ralph Adams Cram, Henry Hobson Richardson, etc. Where are they?
- macwac, on 03/03/2008, -0/+4Need a building permit?
- flashingcurser, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1Exactly what I was thinking looking at the pictures. The International Building Code was not in force at any of these sites. I can bet windloads and seismic calcs were not done that rickety tower-barn.
- filolif, on 03/03/2008, -0/+4I've visited Dr. Evermore's place several times and it is some pretty amazing sculpture. I think the wooden skyscraper and the recycled cathedral in russia and spain are absolutely incredible though. I want to go there.
- sroop, on 03/03/2008, -0/+4"Avery began turning his talents to this bizarre architectural pursuit over two decades ago and (supposedly) believes a spaceship contained within will launch him eventually into supernatural world beyond our own and bring him into contact with the Divine."
lol? - patho, on 03/03/2008, -0/+3Most of these just have to do with insane amounts of ornamentation and less to do with architecture. Dugg for that wood house.
- Aerandir, on 03/03/2008, -0/+3That thing in Baraboo looks like The War of the Worlds robots but with lasers instead of teeth.
- TubbyMcGee, on 03/03/2008, -0/+3Interesting to me is how the words, "insane" and "Genius" often get over-used together.
- Covenant9, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1That last picture near the bottom kinda looks like Aughra's machine from The Dark Crystal.
- migalo, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1Is this architecture or ornamentation?
- thewhits, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1These are some amazing and imaginative structures. It's always great to see peoples minds run wild and create something from it.
- hockachu, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1Site was down for me. Mirror:

- christophelyon, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1I've visited the "Palais idéal du facteur Cheval" in Hauterives (France) a few years ago, it's not too far from where I live.
It's quite amazing, since it is secluded in a very small village, absolutely invisible from the outside, nobody would suspect there would be such a thing at that place. It's also surronded by high buildings and wall, since the village (which lives almost only through the revenue of the tourists who come to see it) has made sure it can't be seen without paying the entry fee...
It's much smaller in real that it can be imagined in pictures, but don't forget it was all build by a single man, by hand... - Lythium, on 03/03/2008, -0/+2Reminds me of the guy who came into our college library a few years ago looking for a book on how to build a log-cabin skyscraper. Yyyeah.
- donkeySays, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1This guy HAS to be a genius!
- joep0, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1the 2nd one looks like a Team Fortress 2 map. I think its dustbowl, or is it gravel pit?
- dmac23, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1this person has some of the best things i have ever seen .... much love
- Sryden42, on 03/03/2008, -2/+0Buried because the word genius doesn't apply.
- dizm, on 03/03/2008, -1/+1How can you call this genius? I can take a crap on a blueprint and tell someone to build it too!
- queenstarsha, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1thin line between these guys and junk yards, but here's another one that walks on the right side of the line, imho:
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/sights/sightstory.p ... - wastelander, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1Apparently the "Broken Angel" house is going to be turned into condos?
http://travel.nytimes.com/2007/01/11/arts/design/1 ... - LilBoyLuver, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1Adjective overload.
- ChinkInMyArmor, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1If you like that stuff, you should check out Burning Man. We burn art like that for breakfast. :)
- ilovethewacokid, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1You have to think of the technological advances and raw materials available to the creative minds at work. If you like these, take a look at Petra. Imagine the creativity and labor and technology used in creating this amazing archaeological splendor.
- protoopus, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1how about the 'coral castle' in florida?
- treehelper, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1Has anyone seen the mushroom house in Whistler, BC Canada? That's pretty crazy. This stuff's pretty amazing too, but maybe a little less architectural... If I get a picture of it, I'll post it for sure. It's cool, whether you like mushrooms or not.
- ptemondous, on 03/06/2008, -0/+0was that live-able???

More incredible architecture.... - CieloChic, on 03/18/2008, -0/+0Bookmarking this link is smart; I've read some pretty good articles, including one about the author canoeing to an old 1800s island fort in South Carolina. Weird, eerie, and exciting, given that the only way in requires you to jump out of the canoe unto a decaying deck and of course the island is abandoned!
