- MarkBrent, on 06/07/2009, -0/+118It had to be done. Roger Federer is the best!
- brandita, on 06/07/2009, -1/+83I think this cements him as the greatest all time tennis player.
- opticwind, on 06/07/2009, -5/+52I still can't believe Nadal was knocked out, pre-finals. That's insane.
- Pradeek, on 06/07/2009, -0/+46I just wish Federer had beaten Nadal in the final. That would have really established Federer's dominance. Now he's got to get back the Wimbledon title. He will end it on the place where it started. I can't wait..... :D
- IFEice, on 06/07/2009, -2/+44Tennis is one of the most enjoyable sports to watch. It shows mental agility, skill, stamina, consistent rivalry, and sportsmanship. The only thing missing is teamwork, which is why I like watching soccer the most.
- EpicLeader, on 06/07/2009, -1/+38Greatest tennis player of all time, glad to see history in the making live today...
- painting, on 06/07/2009, -3/+37too bad you suck at English
- Warom, on 06/07/2009, -2/+30This probably made Federer happy.
- DreamVsPs2, on 06/07/2009, -3/+28Good Job Mr. Federererererer
- jwolcott, on 06/07/2009, -0/+21Federer probably has a penis.
- 333cale, on 06/07/2009, -0/+21ie. the GOAT.
fyi whorn76, the majority if the tennis world, including commentators, fellow players, and former all time greats like Agassi and Bjorg now consider him the greatest of all time. He is only the 6th to complete the career slam. Not only his style of play - the most elegant the game has ever seen - but his career stats are now the most complete, and he's only 27. It will become clearer soon and there will be no room for debate, especially if / when he beats Sampras' record. - jazh, on 06/07/2009, -0/+19Some people are just more emotional that others///
That said, Soderling didn't get the depth to play the shots like against Gonzo, Federer's returning was far superior, and movement too... - azneggrollz, on 06/07/2009, -0/+18Probably
- beck5, on 06/07/2009, -2/+20Most tennis players are gentlemen imo, Nadal is always sporting and polite.
- eviltrunkz, on 06/07/2009, -1/+16Federer is such a beast. It was bound to happen.
- TennisinneT, on 06/07/2009, -0/+15Not just one of the greatest tennis players of all time but also one of the greatest ambassadors to the sport of all time as well.
- TeflonFong, on 06/07/2009, -0/+13Federer is the best clay court player not named Nadal...Sampras never even came close to reaching the French Open Final.
The only other player who can contend with the Title as GOAT for Tennis is Rod Laver - iammzac, on 06/07/2009, -2/+14I bet he feels happy about making the Digg frontpage!!
- jazh, on 06/07/2009, -0/+12Just how you compare two different era's i'm not sure. Sampras simply sucked on clay! - This is why people respect Federer's achievement.
- watermelonnz, on 06/07/2009, -1/+12God people like you are idiots. Do you even understand the sport?
Federer didn't allow him to play like Gonzales did. He controlled the match from start to finish with a better range of shots and much better execution. Sure there was nerves, but there was nerves from both sides here. Federer isn't immune to this effect at all. Soderling admitted after the match he was completely out played, which he was.
As for the crying, oh wow emotion who gives a *****. As for smug, he isn't the most liked player on tour just for his skill, but also because he is humble and will take time out for anyone. There is no smugness. - majmera, on 06/07/2009, -0/+11Could you please name an example of what you consider a useful sport or even better, give us your definition of what an useful sport is?
- deskimo, on 06/07/2009, -0/+11lil bit
- majmera, on 06/07/2009, -0/+10Actually Federrer had to beat Sampras and Agassi in the early part of his career too. Becker, Edberg and McEnroe were pretty much towards the end of their careers when Sampras was at his peak too. So it is pretty much similar.
Plus as Jazh said, Sampras only made it to 1 French semi and was never a real threat while Federrer has made semis in the last 5 in French.
Also more than the record of 14 slams, I think the record of making 20 consecutive semi in grand slams is a real big deal. It shows how consistent and fit he has been and how versatile his game is. - diceau, on 06/07/2009, -1/+11Good on him, well deserved.
- azneggrollz, on 06/07/2009, -0/+10It wasn't a fluke loss from Rafa, Soderling was playing lights out tennis and the matchup suits his game well. Roger has always liked playing big hitters where he can neutralize or use their pace. Versus Rafa, it's a different story since the ball kicks up above his shoulders where he can't generate any pace. Not only that, he has to deal with the energizer bunny on the other side of the court who can get to every ball and play would-be winners, offensively.
- shawn1122, on 06/07/2009, -0/+9Uh, he still cried...
- raklos, on 06/07/2009, -0/+8Think it was Jimmy Connors who said:
you're either a clay court specialist, a grass court specialist or a hard court specialist... or you're Roger Federer - beck5, on 06/07/2009, -2/+10Le god
- bradrmattison, on 06/07/2009, -0/+8I actually read your comment?
- flamesrule, on 06/07/2009, -0/+8I find those kind of questions to be pointless, I mean Federer did his part and got to the final, Nadal didn't. Who is to say that Nadal, if his knee is as seriously injured as his coach claims, could have won the match? There will always be questions like this, just sit back and enjoy the show.
- eraserhead85, on 06/07/2009, -1/+9Well done Roger, you really deserve it. And now get back your #1 position in Atp.
- freezo1994, on 06/08/2009, -0/+8probably
- IFEice, on 06/07/2009, -1/+8back injury, no coach, much older now, nadal is physically more fit.
- MrWolf, on 06/07/2009, -1/+7Switzerland ftw!
- dehlz, on 06/07/2009, -0/+6Indeed, but if I were Roger I would have used my racket to slap that guy to center court when he tried to put the hat on his head.
- shayan2703, on 06/07/2009, -0/+6No surprises there, i'm just glad its official now, he honestly is a God on the court.
- flamesrule, on 06/07/2009, -0/+6Well believe it, and he may not be able to defend his title at Wimbledon. It will be interesting to see what this loss does to his state of mind, can he shake it off or will he falter during the summer and probably lose his top ranking? Can his body hold up for much longer? That's the one often overlooked thing about Roger, he has been so good for so long and has rarely been injured aside from mono last year and back problems at the start of this year.
- gumballer, on 06/07/2009, -2/+8Best part: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o63O0U7wjrw
- ElectricSpeed, on 06/07/2009, -0/+5Congratulations Roger!
- tcptennis, on 06/07/2009, -4/+9too bad your mother is a whore.
logged in just to bury you by the way...
kisses and hugs! - stubadub, on 06/07/2009, -2/+6He did beat Nadal a few weeks back on clay, so putting those two pieces of info together make it more legitimate, not that it wasn't already legit.
- bradrmattison, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4Did you really call Roger Federer a Swede? I'm embarrassed to be an American.
- sobe4u8k, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4Yes.
- aussiejan, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4Well done Roger! I have been thinking all year that it would be so fitting that you should win the French to tie Pete's record with the only grand slam he never won. The GOAT? Absolutely!
- sandipc, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4calling all grammar nazis
- belyle, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4Roger Federer == Swiss.
- compulsive1, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4He is only second to complete career slam at 4 different surfaces! And he doubled the count of grand slam titles achieved by the great Agassi.
Yes, Laver won all slams and had a calendar slam, but three out of four slams were played on grass back then and majority of Americans and many Europeans didn't bother to even participate in Australia.
Federer is the best player to ever pick up the racket. Period.
Contested 20 consecutive semi finals at grand slams and 15 out of last 16 finals. That stat will not be touched for long time if ever. His closest rival in this statistic has 10 consecutive semis.
All of this, combined with film evidence of his incredible skill is enough to declare him the Greatest of All Time. - versatilier, on 06/07/2009, -1/+5soderling was so funny when he accepted runner up trophy - go fed!!!!!!!!!11
- kenhatesemos, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3the man deserves it. hope he wins wimbledon against nadal in the finals to cement his legacy.
