- daeyeth, on 10/02/2008, -1/+23I really hope this isn't one of those "breaks" that turns into "accidental retirement". But maybe it's what he needed. He definitely hasn't been looking like his old self, he was making a lot of unusual mistakes in his Olympics loss vs Blake that he would usually never make.
- jayb1rd, on 10/03/2008, -0/+20Is this so that he can focus on the economy?
- Riggs, on 10/02/2008, -0/+14If you ask me, he deserves some rest. He's had a tough year. I'm glad he finally pulled out a win in the US Open.
- henhanson, on 10/03/2008, -0/+6He really is a legend in the game. I hope he comes back soon.
- huie, on 10/03/2008, -0/+6Federer is an amazing player and person and nothing will change that but he should have taken time off earlier. Tennis is a mental game as much as it is physical and going to tournament after tournament when you're not feeling well (recovering from mono) and losing will only hurt your confidence and make you play worst.
- akkibaba, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4Maybe he'll play soccer for a while, then tennis will find out and be pissed at him. Then he'll spend the next 8 years arguing about how "we were on a break!"
- josegutz, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4Don't stay gone TOO long....you'll end up like McEnroe and become delusional and ill in a funny and comical way...
- spartan777, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3word on the street is that Federer knows how to fix the US economy, and he's going to rush to Washington to let everyone know his secret, but not before an interview with couric.
- Vikaas, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Taking a break really has done wonders for many great tennis players. I'm sure for the greatest player of all time it'll be no different.
- WyldeJ, on 10/02/2008, -1/+4Game.
- Vikaas, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3He's still the greatest player of all time. I hope this break does him some good.
- frieddonuts, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Federer / Agassi '12?
- azneggrollz, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Not just in the Olympics, his footwork has been shoddy the whole year, particularly noticeable in the early few months. It's obviously something to do with him because players who he has beaten 11 times in a row (Roddick) don't just suddenly have him "figured out." Maybe it's thanks to the abysmally shortoff season in a sport that requires a lot of endurance. Let's just hope it was fatigue and the mono. I'd like to see him break the GS record before he retires.
- Gr1nch, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4this should be followed by a "Set. Match." Quip, but no.
Federer was good, but I will not sleep when Nadal is "on top".
Federer needs to come back, or someone else needs to rise. - 311DLMD, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3good. bout time!
- opticwind, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3He's a living legend and being number 1 was quite literally Federer's "thing".
- thisisparta, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3wow what a stat whore. "I want to remain at the top of the game for many more years to come and go after the number one ranking again."
- megagram, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Why? What's wrong with Nadal?
WIth the way he plays and his respect for the sport and his fellow players, he deserves to be at the top more than anybody. - uruururr, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3this is kind of a non story. the end of the year is in a couple months and theres no majors. so he is just gonna rest up for a couple and then back to business.
for all i knew, thats what most tennis players did after the u.s. open - ProteasHaet, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2As a tennis fan, I really hope he takes full profit from his enormous talent and potential, and continues on to play after the break.
- cyrix, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Set.
- Pinkshisno, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3Blouses.
- endustry, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2This is good new for Nadal as well. Beating Federer at Wimbeldon was a high point but getting the chance to do it again in a year when Federer is not sick or fatigued will go a lot further towards cementing his own legend.
- skylar77, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2This was a long time coming..... He looked tired most of the summer.
But this is definitely needed, and will absolutely benefit him. He'll come back stronger than ever and take back No. 1
Great move - davidlitts, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2it is cratering
- miggy82, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2I wonder what him and Tiger will do together with their time off. Nike must be pissed.
- coopaloop, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2He really isn't going to miss much. The tennis off season starts mid October and lasts through December anyways. the only things he'll miss are a few minor tournaments and the year end championships.
- Pradeek, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1Agree... Federer is an awesome player. But Nadal is beating him fair and square. Maybe a break will do him good
- windphoenix, on 10/03/2008, -1/+2I thought it was only a couple of weeks, but he has really nothing to play for if he can't get No. 1 back. Maybe he will take time to make some adjustments to his game. Who knows.
- rahulchowdhury, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1It would be great to see him back in action!
- dexedrine, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1Not as an affront to Federer, but I do like Nadal more. =/
- barbaragordon, on 10/03/2008, -2/+3Not surprising given his year. Nadal has worn him down mentally this year. It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't call it a day.
- subtle, on 10/03/2008, -1/+2What a wonderful position to be in: He has achieved everything there is to achieve and has all the money in the world. Just go and enjoy it. Then think about a comeback.
- IHaveCrayons, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1The man was the No.1 player in the world since 2003. That's 5 years of constant play without being injured or dropping to the No.2 seed until now. He has the longest record of holding the No.1 spot. I think he deserves a break, you can't expect him to play godly tennis for his entire life not even Sampras did. It took Sampras forever to get his 14th slam.
- mousky, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1But think about that. Despite struggling with mono, he managed to make it to the final of the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
When it comes to the mental game, no one is better than Federer. He was down two sets at Wimbledon and came back to force a fifth and final set. Anyone else would have crumbled. - mousky, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1I disagree. Sure, Nadal walked over Federer at the French Open - but that was expected. Despite having mono, Federer played one of the most amazing matches in tennis and Wimbledon history. It wasn't an easy win for Nadal. Then Federer came back to win the US Open.
Not bad for a guy suffering with mono. - woody168, on 10/03/2008, -2/+3I wish Roddick would go on a break...............forever.
- liz85, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1I hope he will come back soon and re-claim his No. 1 rank. He really deserves it.
- Johnnyjm, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1Expect to see him on Dancing with the Stars.
- partrow, on 10/03/2008, -1/+1This news is certainly going to affect my life today. Do you think he will fight one of the boxers that was mentioned in another story? That would really get them both the notoriety and money they seek.
- desertcoffin, on 10/03/2008, -0/+0He'll be back... I know he will.
- Frizbe72, on 10/03/2008, -0/+0I'd be gutted if he retired especially with him being so close to beating Sampras's grand slam record
- cyrix, on 10/03/2008, -4/+3My first thoughts: "*****....it's Lemieux/Armstrong/Favre all over again."
I can't see why he'd take a "break" at all. I admit that tennis is a sport where the elite as of the past 4 years have risen and fallen quicker than you can say onomatopoeia, but I've been hoping for some lasting contenders like Sampras and Agassi. This just kinda crushes my hopes. It's almost as if reigning dynasty players in any sport are a dime a dozen anymore.
