- axisofphilippe, on 11/15/2007, -6/+67This strike is horrible. I work in the industry and it's putting everyone I know (including myself) out of work. The writers who are on strike still have residuals coming in, they still get paid for not working. Us crew on the other hand are screwed. This is going to ruin a lot of people.
- allaboutdatiki, on 11/13/2007, -1/+33Lets stick a big flamin fork in network TV and get ready for the next gold rush as all those advertising dollars head to the net ...
- twrife, on 11/13/2007, -8/+39The Office is a downer, but at least there are still quite a few House episodes left.
- blackmage439, on 11/14/2007, -2/+28No TV and no beer make Homer something, something...
- lordtyros, on 11/13/2007, -0/+22It's never lupus
- doctechnical, on 11/14/2007, -6/+26I can go without television for as long as there are books I haven't read yet.
- actorboy, on 11/15/2007, -1/+21" The writers who are on strike still have residuals coming in, they still get paid for not working."
You should see the cash that the company that fired you has coming in. - Otto, on 11/13/2007, -4/+23Oh noes! Bad things are happening, so anybody talking about anything else is clearly crazy!!!
Not everything has to be about what you find important. Cope. - ncairns, on 11/13/2007, -0/+16Yeah, only in this industry.
Err, or the oil industry. Or the pharmaceutical industry. Or the manufacturing industry. Or the telecom industry. Or the tech industry. Or... well, pretty much any industry. - lordtyros, on 11/13/2007, -1/+17Actually, lion prides do just that. Males first, then females, then the cubs can fight over the scraps.
- dartmanx, on 11/13/2007, -6/+22I saw a statement comparing the writers/actors/producers to a family. Only in this industry would the family sit down to dinner, then the head of the family says "I'm going to eat until I'm full, then we'll see what's left for the rest of you" (major paraphrase).
I'm usually only somewhat fond of unions, but I gotta go with the WGA on this one. - misfit815, on 11/14/2007, -6/+21The only show I follow anymore is Doctor Who. Suck it, Hollywood.
- Tserk, on 11/14/2007, -3/+17Call of Duty 4 multiplayer appears to be unaffected, so I don't give a *****.
- Calculon, on 11/13/2007, -0/+14And you read digg because... oh thats right, entertainment!
- MrBabyMan, on 11/13/2007, -1/+13I hear you. Once 30 Rock, Heroes, Lost & Pushing Daisies are done, I'm gonna be Netflix's best friend.
- andrewcsayer, on 11/13/2007, -2/+14How long before I take to my TV with a sledgehammer is more like it
- Radian, on 11/13/2007, -0/+11I live in Santa Monica. Yesterday I heard a forty-something guy with a black Mercedes and slicked-back hair in a coffee shop talking about sending all the writing over to India, since (in his words) they're cheap, they love our shows and they (Indians) are already writing lots of stuff for the New York Times, etc.... Not sure who he was & not sure how true the NYT etc.. stuff is, but that is a little insight into the mindset.... (P.S. -- I'm an engineer / small business owner, very aware of outsourcing, etc... so that's what got my attention in the first place.)
- aresef, on 11/13/2007, -1/+12Actually Steve Carell has been calling in sick since the strike started, citing "enlarged balls."
- michelspc, on 11/13/2007, -0/+10Colbert Report / Daily Show are not scripted months in advance.
- katermurr, on 11/13/2007, -0/+10Avoiding paying for work by displaying it in a different format= Extortion.
- Spoomeister, on 11/14/2007, -0/+10Watch it, sparky. When we get bored, we BOMB PEOPLE.
- GeorgeXIV, on 11/13/2007, -0/+10Oh and why are people being so high and mighty? There's nothing wrong with appreciating some of the good TV thats out there
- N00F, on 11/13/2007, -1/+10If it isn't Discovery channel, Military channel or something on the Speed channel, I don't watch it. I still download Top Gear and the new Doctor Who though :-)
I haven't seen any of the new popular television shows since Seinfeld left TV. - sodoh, on 11/13/2007, -0/+9Heroes Origins is gone as well and Heroes Season 2 will be gone if it continues further.
- dartmanx, on 11/13/2007, -1/+10They can always say the writers have Lupus.
- TheMachine1, on 11/13/2007, -2/+10Has anyone else noticed the scripts on porn stations have gotten pretty
lame since the writer strike? - ericeman, on 11/13/2007, -1/+8It'll be a whole lot longer than 15 minutes Borninda818 and sometimes it's alright to want a little entertainment. I mean, most non-reality prime-time programming these days has substance so why shouldn't we want to see how their stories continue?
- look4alec, on 11/14/2007, -6/+13Wow, they really need to work this thing out by the time Lost comes back on.
- Spoomeister, on 11/13/2007, -0/+7Great. Last thing I need is an episode of "House" or "Lost" to suddenly break into a 15-minute, 200-person Bollywood musical number in the 4th act.
- Synn, on 11/13/2007, -1/+7And the best part about your little speech is that you posted it on the internet...instead of you being out volunteering in your community...or taking a walk outside...or reading a book...or talking to your kids.
Idiot. - katermurr, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6Because you can't make a show without a script. It's not the production crew that's striking, it's the writers.
- chewties, on 11/14/2007, -4/+10*****!! You want a cookie with your indie coffee shop latte?
- ArmyOfFun, on 11/14/2007, -0/+5Argumentum ad convenientiam. This is a logical fallacy, one may care about the war (world events and politics) or entertainment but not both? Likewise, I can take a walk, do community work and read a book, but not watch TV? Look, I follow politics and world events but at the end of the day, it's frustrating because ultimately, in most cases, I'm powerless to affect change. If you have some specific suggestion about how to enact change on even a very local level, I'd love to hear it.
TV is a form of entertainment, it's something to do while you have down time. A way to recharge your batteries. I simply cannot be productive every minute of every day, I burn out and hate life. I'm guessing my experience in this respect is the norm, not the exception.
Rome didn't fall for one reason. I'd guess most Roman citizens that had leisure time used it to non-productive ends even during that empire's rise. Not to mention, this is the umpteenth time I've seen someone pointing out something they don't like about our society, link it to Rome and how that was THE reason for the Roman empire's fall. When in reality it Romes decline was far more complicated and cannot be reduced so simply.
Of course, people should absolutely care more about the Iraq war than Heroes. But one can care about both, even with the recognition that Heroes is ultimately meaningless while the other is literally about life and death. Even then, from a monetary and fiscal point of view, this strike IS significant. Even if you don't care about TV, and I won't fault anyone who doesn't, shouldn't you be paying attention to nationwide strike in a billion dollar industry? Isn't it at least possible that this strike will have ramifications on future employer-employee relations in other fields? - GeorgeXIV, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5"Stargate Atlantis should go largely unaffected by the strike, since it is a Canadian production based in Vancouver, B.C. and its staff members belong predominantly to Canadian unions. When asked on his blog what affect a strike would have on Stargate, executive producer Joseph Mallozzi replied with a terse "None."
Some speculate that a prolonged WGA strike in the United States could actually force networks to turn to Canada for more production."
via gateworld.net - bethlagarrison, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5People who say they hate Battlestar are just pretending to have seen Battlestar.
Sorry, it's true. - mpancha, on 11/13/2007, -1/+6Cavemen: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Five episodes have aired, so there are eight left.
damnit, they still have episodes left :( - inactive, on 11/13/2007, -6/+11BOOOOOOOORRRRRIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG!!!
-1 - mtekk, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4nah, let them all go broke (actors, directors, producers, CEOs, and writers).
- fantasticFlan, on 11/12/2007, -0/+4I have the ability to have varying levels of concern over multiple things at the same time. Been doing it since I was a kid so I just assumed everyone else could do it too.
- EvilJohn, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4If NBC is earning advertising revenue on the web content, then the writer should get a piece. It's not really anymore complicated than that.
- bdbr, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4If there aren't any new shows on TV, they won't be available to watch online or download either.
- G-RaZoR, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3Well there is always Caveman... 8 episodes left!!! w00t!
One can only imagine how much sarcasm can actually be put into a caveman related digg comment. - weizilla, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3at least we won't run out of beer anytime soon
- shultzy055, on 11/13/2007, -1/+4That's what she said.
- bdbr, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3Some of us have the capability to keep track of more than three things in our lives.
- liquisoft, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3I can deal without brand new television shows coming in. I just think the writers deserve to receive the pay they seek, and I encourage them to stick it out until they get what they want. However, the unfortunate reality is that thousands upon thousands of people are out of work because they aren't stars or writers. It takes a lot more to make a TV show than a room full of writers and some actors. There are people hired to do really small, but important jobs. There's a guy who rigs lighting, and he's got several lighting assistants. Those people are unemployed, at the moment, and their paychecks are meager to begin with. I guess the ideal solution would be for the studios to agree to fork over the amount of money that's fair and for everybody to get back to work ASAP, but these are the same studios that pulled their content from digital distribution models like iTunes because they weren't getting enough money. *sigh*
- zwaldowski, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3When were you born?
- cwilson, on 11/12/2007, -1/+4You are right about the country. However, if you focus too much on the bad stuff you'll just be miserable. Television is a nice way to take your mind off of things and relax a bit. But now, that little safety zone is quickly vanishing and one can't help but feel even worse. There are other alternatives, of course, but for those of us who enjoy television, this really sucks.
You are right. Americans should be concerned with what is happening to our country, but don't just assume that we are all single track minded, television watching zombies because we are upset about the writer's strike. Not EVERY conversation needs to get political. - Yareking, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Just hope stargate sg1 movies Wont be affected. its in canada i doubt...
