- dashdingo, on 05/09/2009, -8/+169Nothing replaces Firefly, damnit.
Also, I liked Heart of Gold. - Alias1431, on 05/09/2009, -4/+72Did I fall asleep?
Only for a little while.
Shall I go?
If you like. - MikeOxbigg, on 05/09/2009, -5/+57On paper; it's great. The concept, darkness, moral issues, it'd make for a kickass series of books to be adapted into a blockbuster.
on the screen....Eh.
The episodes have been getting A LOT better each week but those first 4 weeks with BS like investigator to a pop singer (It's a plot from the Josie & the Pussycat Dolls cartoon) killed a lot of the depth of the show. Fox interference was a VERY bad move here. Then again, it always is. - jwag57, on 05/08/2009, -17/+61I love Dollhouse also.
- sdcarter, on 05/09/2009, -4/+40What shall I do?
Watch Firefly. I hear it's great. - roflmaololstorm, on 05/09/2009, -3/+39I whole-heartedly agree. While the complexities of Dollhouse are amazing and set up endless potential I think people forget how much was in store for us with Firefly. We can take that for granted as fans because so many questions were answered in Serenity but if we had the chance even get 3 season who knows how awesome Firefly was going to get... Remember as a show where we were left, Inara was leaving, Shepard was on the verge as well, we had never seen a true Reaver and didn't know why River had her brain messed with, these are just a few things that Joss would have no doubt surfaced over the course of a few season given the chance.
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -6/+42LOL, if you need an article on "why it's REALLY his greatest work", then chances are it's ... not.
- Protonz, on 05/09/2009, -11/+40Dollhouse summary:
"Tell me where the Dollhouse is!"
"Tell me WHERE the DOLLHOUSE is!"
"TELL ME WHERE THE DOLLHOUSE IS!" - gcnaddict, on 05/09/2009, -4/+30"Back before Dollhouse first aired, we argued it would be the best thing Joss Whedon had ever done. Now its first season is ending, and we were proved right."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_Bias - kingUssop, on 05/09/2009, -8/+33Uh... what if you can't tolerate Eliza Dusku, and therefore can't stand to watch even 10 minutes of Dollhouse? /raises hand
Sorry, but if it's so great, boot her F level acting from the show (impossible I know she's producing) and then I'll watch. - 12Iceman, on 05/09/2009, -4/+21>>Buffy - One GREAT character (you know who)
Spike? - Thumper13, on 05/09/2009, -5/+22Oh, well, since YOU said so.
- lived666, on 05/09/2009, -1/+18Why do you think firefly sucked?
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -8/+24Whenever I see it, the acting is pretty horrible. The idea could have been awesome, but the acting just wasn't there.
- Snoz, on 05/09/2009, -6/+22Clearly, Joss is a writing genius. All of his previous mainstream work (Buffy, Angel, Firefly) was well-written and produced. Dollhouse has that potential. Imagine season 1 of Buffy and comparing that to the rest of the series :)
- AladinSane, on 05/09/2009, -3/+18Willow?
- PabloIV, on 05/09/2009, -2/+16This show has grown on me, it started out super slow and the episode with the Black Britney was horribly acted.
But slowly it has reeled me in specially with bringing Wash in for the Villain role. Seriously it's gotten much better. - Shogi, on 05/09/2009, -0/+13No no, it's "gorram it"
- belebih, on 05/09/2009, -1/+14Honestly, I like most characters on Buffy.
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -0/+13You're spot on. The supporting cast is actually really good and fairly versatile relatively speaking.
- seattlegirluw, on 05/08/2009, -12/+24Awesome piece. I really loved the in-depth analysis. I added a comment on the site, about some additional murky moral ground that Dollhouse represents.
I think the article made me appreciate Dollhouse even more! (And I was already a fan.) - smoothmann, on 05/09/2009, -13/+25Dollhouse is awesome
- Schmapdi, on 05/09/2009, -9/+20Dollhouse is amazing - I'm betting all the people digging down haven't even seen it, or only watched the first episode (it improved a lot throughout the season).
Sadly - it's almost certainly canceled, so tonight's episode will be the last. There will be a bonus episode on the dvd at least, since Fox couldn't be assed to air them all. - rwac, on 05/09/2009, -4/+15It seems like every high school kid and their little sister can find a drug dealer.
Why is it that the cops can't find the dealers ? - oneoverzero, on 05/09/2009, -1/+12No way is it better than Objects In Space.
- superkendall, on 05/09/2009, -2/+13You're just saying that because this time Wash is not dead at the end.
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -2/+13i'll give it another shot - but the guy needs to write a show that doesn't take 6+ episodes to get interesting.
- silfiriel, on 05/09/2009, -1/+12I loved all 14 eps.
yet my favorite could be Out of Gas, if i had to choose. - aenima987, on 05/09/2009, -0/+10And those guys with the blue hands were going to become a major plotline.
- norman619, on 05/09/2009, -11/+20Oh come on. This show sucked. The only reason guys liked it was becasue it had a ***** load of hot girls. I tried to watch a few episodes but it was way too boring. Firefly was a MUCH better show.
- Sedarati, on 05/09/2009, -5/+14first episode was boring
- Wegg, on 05/09/2009, -2/+11Dollhouse has really won me over. The first 5 or 6 episodes were . . . very forgettable but after that it really kicked into high gear. Just watched the season ending episode and WOW. I really hope they continue on with another season.
- Firespray1138, on 05/09/2009, -0/+9I hope there's a second season, if anything I just want to see more insane Alan Tudyk.
- centran, on 05/09/2009, -4/+13Dollhouse was exactly like Whedon said... It would pick up half way through the season.
It did for me at least. I didn't like it at first but sure enough I stuck with it and around half way I started to get hooked.
However, that might have been too great of a risk he took. I am not sure it will get picked up for a second season. Whedons greatest mistake is the reason we love his shows. Excellent character development and multiple episode story arcs. Makes for a great story but hard for people to jump into and network execs hate it. - norman619, on 05/09/2009, -1/+9He's a troll. Do you ask a dog why it's such a dog?
- H3BR3W, on 05/09/2009, -3/+11Astonishing X-Men is his best work. I don't really like his television shows too much aside from Firefly, and I thought Dollhouse was pretty lame. *shrug*
- SniperZero, on 05/09/2009, -3/+11No its
"did i fall asleep"
"for a little while"
"shall i go now"
"if you like" - bloodsangre7, on 05/09/2009, -6/+14Fantastic episode tonight
- flossdaily, on 05/09/2009, -2/+10anyanka. hand's down.
- jammrk, on 05/09/2009, -2/+9I still watch Firefly, to me that was just one of the best series of TV shows ever. I never had a chance to check out dollhouse, I heard so many bad reviews, but now I am curious...
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -4/+11If you can get past Dushku, the guy who plays Victor is a great actor.
The show's got some good people in it, but I agree that she's the least talented person on the show. Wash should slice up her face a little. - Shogi, on 05/09/2009, -1/+8With a body like that, she can read me the goddamn phone book.
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -10/+17Given that this is almost certainly the last show, let me explain to the handful of fanatics why it failed. And no, it's not "Fox sucks". First of all, let me state that I've watched every episode. I'm a huge Whedon fan, and held on through some misguided sense of loyalty. Also, I wanted to see Helo back in action. That said:
1: There were absolutely NO likable characters.
Every member of the Dollhouse was basically a White Slaver. Say what you will about Topher or Amy Acker's character, the fact remains that both of them were willing participants to rape. (See Note 2.) As for Helo... uh, "Ballard": he's a complete douchebag. He treats November like dirt, then leaves her to rot, because Joss Movie Logic states that nobody could POSSIBLY love a size 4 while Eliza Dushku exists somewhere in the universe.
2: Yes, it IS about rape.
Echo obviously didn't want to join the Dollhouse, and Sierra was kidnapped by them at the behest of the millionaire rapist who, (as he informs us) is getting "Frequent Buyer Points" for how often he sexually assaults her.
3: It's hard to care about a character with absolutely no personality.
Since Echo is, by definition, a blank slate every episode, there's no way to identify with her. The viewer (normal viewers, that is) is forced into an odd situation: we're outraged by the fact that Echo is basically being forced to be a whore, but at the same time we don't really care about her as a human being. In fact, Joss ENCOURAGES not to care about her as a human being, because if we did, we'd be forced to acknowledge that a character we like and empathize with is, in fact, being forced to be a whore.
4: While it pains me to say this about a Fantasy show, it was ridiculously unbelievable.
I'll suspend disbelief only so far. Brainwashing technology? Fine. A place who's entire business model seems to be based around "Billionaires who demand that their prostitutes to care about them as people"? No problem. Eliza Dushku going toe-to-toe with Tahmoh Penikett? Uh, sorry. No, I don't care how much Ninja Training they downloaded her with. When you're a 5'6" 105 lbs girl, you are NOT going to be judo-flipping Tahmoh Penikett. Not anywhere but in the fantasies of a bunch of sexually frustrated Buffy fans. I bought it in Buffy because she was the Slayer, but it's stupid and cheesy on Dollhouse. Joss has gone to the "all-powerful Waif" well once too often this time.
5: Speaking of the Dollhouse's business model: WTF?
Most people I know don't care if their hooker "really likes them" or is faking it for the money. I don't know what a night with Echo goes for, but according to CraigsList, I can order me up the girl of my choice for about $300 bucks. I'm pretty sure that if I through in an extra fifty, they'd not only tell me they love me, but that I'm a good kisser and have a 12-inch penis. I'm not sure it'd matter to me if they really believed it or not, because at the end of the day, I'M STILL PAYING FOR SEX. No matter how much the Dolls believe that they're screwing the guy of their own free will, the customer still knows that they shelled out money for Services Rendered. Of course, the Dolls aren't always whores... sometimes they're overly expensive, physically unqualified security guards. Or overly expensive, no-real-police-contacts Police Officers. Or overly expensive, ultimately useless members of religious cults. In nearly every case we've seen so far, there's no reason at all why the client wouldn't have just gone with a cheaper, non-doll option. Hell, in the "Most Dangerous Game" rip-off episode, the guy ends up dying specifically because he went with a Doll instead of a normal girl.
To sum up: it's a creepy show about unlikeable people doing reprehensible things for no apparent reason. While it was certain to be a hit with Internet Sub-Dwellers, it wasn't really that good of an idea for anyone else. - geost, on 05/09/2009, -3/+10Dollhouse is a good show. Sure the first couple episodes were lame and boring, but after that things started picking up. I must say these last few episodes have been one of the best so far..
- JEbel72, on 05/09/2009, -4/+10Dollhouse is undeniably great and has huge potential, but it will never take that special place in my heart reserved for Firefly.
- Protonz, on 05/09/2009, -2/+8That's BS about "you can't sign a contract into slavery", and "especially when we have a black president".
How is a voluntary contract anything like forcing someone into slavery against their will? - Nebarik, on 05/09/2009, -0/+6dont scold him for being correct
- flossdaily, on 05/09/2009, -2/+8rwac, have you not noticed that our prisons are overflowing with drug dealers?
- ShugNinx21, on 05/09/2009, -0/+6I'm starting to catch a few flashes of the brilliance and wit that Joss shows normally have but it's taken till the end of the season for that to start showing up in the scripts.
- logic11, on 05/09/2009, -2/+8His work on Roseanne was some of the sharpest writing on TV ever. Dollhouse isn't there yet, but I think it stands a good chance of reaching those heights.
Oh yeah, the dialogue in Titan AE was good, it's just the rest of it that failed. -
