- mikeruiz7, on 07/16/2009, -1/+42Maybe we should catch on and start airing Top Gear in the US. For the love of Christ.
- potamkin, on 07/16/2009, -0/+36You think we make good villains because of the Revolutionary War! Seriously though, i am an actor myself (not too successful as of yet!), and i put it down to the difference in training in London vs New York and LA.
UK actors generally have far more 'stage' orientated training, as opposed to US actors who are immediately pushed towards film and tv. I've been to LA and briefly studied acting there, and there is an overwhelming sense that the actor has to be a commercial success, rather than a 'good' actor.
I'm not saying that's wrong, there are so many amazing US actors, its just a different approach. I think this puts British actors at an advantage for some of the quirkier more challenging roles. - doctechnical, on 07/16/2009, -2/+37European heaven: French cooking, German engineering, British humor.
European hell: British cooking, French engineering, German humor.
/as told to me by a German friend. - poidh, on 07/16/2009, -2/+34Brit actors generally make good villains or psychopaths.
- mickstephenson, on 07/16/2009, -4/+34The food in Britain is second to none, people say that British food is bland but infact the truth is British food is entirely to do with importing and growing accustomed to other cuisine from the wider world, instead of the protectionism you find in France and Italy. Just compare a British supermarket to a European one, the vast variety of foods shows you everything you need to know.
People knock British cuisine because they associate the Sunday Roast and Fish and Chips, but the truth is British cuisine fell out of existence during the empire as we adopted tastes from the wider empire into British cuisine.
The most laughable thing is Americans knocking British cuisine, I can't think of anything of value to associate with American cuisine. - Rotzooi, on 07/16/2009, -0/+27The show isn't even really about cars as much as it is about three guys monkeying around with them.
And on top, it's not like the European viewers are rushing out to buy Veyrons and Gallardo's because they were featured on Top Gear...
It's quality entertainment, just air it in the US ffs.
Well, not that I care - it 'airs' on the internet 20 minutes after the broadcast has ended in the UK. ftw - buddamus, on 07/16/2009, -1/+26Americans have a hard time coping British comedy, remember the massive fail that was the US version of Red Dwarf
- HeDiggMe, on 07/16/2009, -0/+25Ok just take Cruise
- Evari, on 07/16/2009, -4/+28A word to the Yanks, eating salad, especially without dressing is good for losing weight. Unfortunately it can't do anything about the lack of education and what ever that war in Iraq was all about, but the disgusting obesity it might just get 'sorted'. Stereotypes ftw.
- potamkin, on 07/16/2009, -3/+27What an idiotic comment
- dfross, on 07/16/2009, -0/+23Heaven is a place where the police are English; the chefs are Italian; the car mechanics are German; the lovers are French and it's all organized by the Swiss.
Hell is a place where the police are German; the chefs are English; the car mechanics are French; the lovers are Swiss and it's all organized by the Italians. - borez, on 07/16/2009, -2/+24That's because we're like that in real life.
- Myonosken, on 07/16/2009, -0/+22A lot of the cars are imports anyway.
Plus, who watches Top Gear and thinks "I'm getting that half a million beast" - Whatasillyhat, on 07/16/2009, -0/+17No dice!
- borez, on 07/16/2009, -0/+16Trouble is though the bosses just see it as pointless because 90% of the featured cars can't be bought in the US.
/this however is not my opinion. - 4AntiStupid, on 07/16/2009, -0/+16You must not watch BBC much. The stuff that gets exported is the cream of the crop. There's a whole lot of sediment under that.
- avaris15, on 07/16/2009, -1/+16Yeah, but The Office has been a huge success.
- raptordrew, on 07/16/2009, -1/+16Come on! No mention of Doctor Who or Torchwood?! Shame.
- kbcool, on 07/16/2009, -1/+15British actors are usually better trained. Including Shakespearean acting.
The American attitude tends to be: "If they're good looking, they got the job" - roostersheep, on 07/16/2009, -2/+15Also, stop living in castles.
- Myonosken, on 07/16/2009, -4/+17American denral hygiene as in whitening and cosmetic surgery? When I visited rural US I can safely say dental care was almost entirely awful- where as Britain has discounted dentalcare under the NHS.
Also, you are aware chewing gum constantly:
a) is ***** disgusting
b) can damage your stomach - lofi4life, on 07/16/2009, -0/+13I think its a reference to American soldiers stationed in the UK during WW2. They would give chewing gum to little kids, I don't think gum was very popular in the UK before then.
- HeDiggMe, on 07/16/2009, -6/+18How about a transatlantic trade? We'll give you guys Tom Cruise in exchange for Sacha Baron Cohen, Idris Elba, and a bankable 2010 A-lister.
- xaeon, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1290% of the cars can't be bought by anyone who doesn't look at their bank account to see how much they've made, not how much they have left.
- Brooks007, on 07/16/2009, -0/+10Your comment is laughable because every thing you said about British cuisine is true for American cuisine.
“importing and growing accustomed to other cuisine from the wider world” America is the melting pot.
Plus I’m from south Louisiana and if you don’t think Cajun food is valuable then you are a retard. - CrazyDave303, on 07/16/2009, -3/+13I'd be happy with the 4 BBC channels rather then 100+ crap we can get.
the box bz - CressCrowbits, on 07/16/2009, -0/+10Give us 2 Angelina Jolie's and we'll take Cruise.
- sv650touring, on 07/16/2009, -0/+10"I can't think of anything of value to associate with American cuisine" is just your ignorance, not an actual reflection of the quality of American cuisine. You are no foodie.
Tex-Mex, steak, Carolina BBQ, Chicago hot dogs and deep dish pizza, Philly cheesesteak, Jewish delicatessen, St. Louis ribs, southern fried chicken... and that's just off the top of my head.
There's plenty of wonderful food from America, just like most every country and culture. And because of the variety of people and wealth of this country, we also have a huge *variety* of wonderful food. - palehorse864, on 07/16/2009, -6/+15Umm gum chewing? I don't think we chew an inordinate amount of gum. Most of the people I know don't ever chew it.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+9That was totally unnecessary.
- groo68, on 07/16/2009, -0/+8I hope shia labeouf is your example of commercial success, not good acting.
- Myonosken, on 07/16/2009, -1/+9Or Coupling US. That still gives me nightmares.
- Cartman86, on 07/16/2009, -0/+8Wait what? I mean yeah you can get the best of television on the net, but that's not the topic. The topic is US Television Shows vs. British Televisions shows. Just because Comcast gives you a billion channels and you can't figure out how to tune in when the good stuff is on isn't US TV's fault. Get a DVR or like you said watch it online. Wouldn't say that BBC4 is greater than all US TV combined. Lost, The West Wing, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Twin Peaks, Friday Night Lights, Battlestar, Star Trek, X-Files, 24, Veronica Mars, Arrested Development, South Park, The Simpsons, Futurama I mean come on these are classics! I love me some British shows. I am Dr. Who and Torchwood fanatic, but I'd say the best stuff has and is coming out of the US.
- manicleek, on 07/16/2009, -3/+11Ooooh so we're using ***** stereotypes?
In that case going to school and not McDonalds will stop Americans from being dumb and fat - unpredictedM, on 07/16/2009, -3/+10"The most laughable thing is Americans knocking British cuisine, I can't think of anything of value to associate with American cuisine."
Couldn't digg you up enough for that statement - mickstephenson, on 07/16/2009, -0/+7I'd just like to add Mexican cuisine doesn't count. It is awesome though.
- Rotzooi, on 07/16/2009, -0/+7And there I was, expecting Digg to have some kind of protection against extreme commenting...
- bodger, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7Are you the new Sacha Baron character?
- devansega, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6It must be said we do love a good war.
- thinboyslim, on 07/16/2009, -2/+8Dominic West comes across as such a hypocritical *****!! You can't really complain if foreign actors are doing a good job, highlighting Johnny Depp's portrayals of British characters isn't the best route to take, especially when he's a million times better than you at acting.
- IamNOTmrT, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7From now on I plan to open all my comments with 'Sorry I have a bad speak English, but I still want to express my opinion'.
Gold! - yournightmare, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6Wait...you said BBC4 is better than all American TV stations combined, but then you list everything you've ever loved and they are all US programs. That was very confusing, please clarify.
- devansega, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7True. I am a psychopath and quite the villain dontcha know.
- CressCrowbits, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6Sunday roast is awesome.
- borez, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5Let's just hope that they NEVER try to reformat it for the US market, they did that in Australia and the resulting show was absolutely ***** terrible.
/worth the download if you can find a torrent, just for the comparison. - Jeremyz0r, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5example: shia labeouf
- noizeuk, on 07/16/2009, -6/+11We still make the best TV... Top Gear, Louis Theroux, dramas such a The Apostle, The Take and Spooks, Life on Mars. Comedies such as Only Fools and Horses, Shameless, Skins... Topical comedy such as Mock the Week, QI, Have I got news for you and i'll even chuck Newsnight because its got Jeremy Paxman who is quite undisputably a legend.
- gkiltz, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6Could it be because British TV still employs script writers?
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4My guess is Roguecop is an out of work American actor.
- CressCrowbits, on 07/16/2009, -2/+6Err, did you guys miss the obvious sarcasm? He even points it out in his last sentence.
