- Falldog, on 12/03/2007, -0/+30If downloading TV shows equates to supporting writers, I've been their biggest fan for a long time.
- slashbot, on 12/03/2007, -6/+23"Ethically, I can steal..."
How is stealing ethical? - TACV, on 12/03/2007, -5/+15Support the writers!!
- Anliz, on 12/03/2007, -5/+13Such delusional logic. This isnt anywhere close to a sound ethical argument supporting theft.
- soloride, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7Stage6 is awesome!
- nnagflar, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7Ethics are subjective.
- drlha, on 12/03/2007, -0/+6I was wondering this. Surely the options are "Watch" or "Don't Watch". If you want to support the writers, stealing what is their work isn't the way to do it and certainly isn't "ethical".
- CrankyHippo, on 12/03/2007, -1/+6haven't you heard of robin hood? =P
- Webbster, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4It used to be. Not any more.
A couple of months back there was loads of movies and TV shows on there. But the big companies sent in their lawyers and nearly everything is gone.. - pbasch, on 12/03/2007, -1/+5Thanks, everyone. Just added Blip.TV today. Hey, is it ethical to digg your own article? I guess so... if you're running for office, you can vote for yourself, after all.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5Dugg.
- Shawn4168, on 12/03/2007, -2/+5And they also put thousands of non-union workers out of work due to their selfishness. Funny how everybody seems to forget that while hailing the writers as heroes for wanting to squeeze a few more pennies into their already enormous paychecks.
- kfstark, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3You must be kidding.
Legal: Watch television shows as distributed
Legal and Ethical: Don't watch. - insllvn, on 12/03/2007, -1/+4Ugh yeah, I am totally pirating this stuff to show solidarity with the writers... That's it ... Solidarity!
- NotAChickenHawk, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Two observations:
a) the networks treat the writers worse than the RIAA treats its artists. The artists have a lot of sympathy from the general public (which is the leveraged into sympathy by the RIAA for themselves, but that's another story...), so why should the writers not enjoy a similar or greater amount of sympathy?
b) This whole strike is an argument between one group of people who mostly have 6 figure incomes with another group of people who mostly have 7 figure incomes. The rest of us, with the 5 figure incomes, are the ones loosing out. In the end, I have no sympathy for either of them, but I want my shows back on the air, dammit! - gotamd, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2It's sad that people don't seem to realize that this is an option. I think it says something about our culture that people are primarily thinking of ways to hurt the production companies without giving up anything themselves.

- SmilingJess, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2I have to side with the writers on this whole strike deal, they are the shining stars behind the TV shows we love. Support the writers by watching all of your tv online -- don't let the major corporations think they can continue to count on you sitting through their programming and sponsored ads. If viewers drop, their ad revenues will as well -- hit them where it hurts.
As a side note, I came across this article just a few moments ago. It is another great place to get free video, this one is more geared towards mobile phone viewers though.
http://www.bbgeeks.com/blackberry-reviews/geek-rev ... - pdsoul, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2Got totally addicted to that recently!
- Shaman760, on 12/03/2007, -4/+6Good for the writers. They have brought an entire industry to it's knees. Next stop- the RIAA.
- SaladFork, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2He shoots down stage 6 because one video was of "lousy quality"? That site probably has the highest quality streaming video I've seen anywhere on the internet, not to mention near-instant buffering. Plus, he says Joost is "like Second Life" because they're both applications?
WTF? - AmusedToDeath, on 12/03/2007, -1/+3So because they're making money off of their product it makes it ok to steal it?
Also, you guys clearly don't get that there is a big difference between manufacturing cost and PRODUCTION cost when it comes to media. - formergthing, on 12/03/2007, -2/+4Stealing is ethical? That's news to me!
- Shawn4168, on 12/03/2007, -1/+3People should not be forced to join unions just to avoid getting screwed over by strikes. This is why I hate unions...they are nothing but selfish corporations that look out for their own interests, without regard for the interests of those not in the union.

- skyfire1, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1I've been doing this before the writer's strike. Lets face it, there are no consequences to downloading a tv show.
- bethlagarrison, on 12/03/2007, -1/+2Am I the only one that sees the irony in the fact that this strike, caused by the studios' reluctance to treat online video as a serious medium, is causing so many people to switch over to the web?
- sadomatic, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Or, just turn off the ***** TV.
- pbasch, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Strikes are not necessarily about people in grinding poverty struggling for a living wage. There ARE strikes like that. But this is a Guild, not a Union. This strike is about skilled artisans negotiating the ownership and rewards of their work. There are still considerations of justice, even if these are not members of a suffering underclass.
- chinaman1472, on 12/03/2007, -2/+3On one hand, I believe the writer's have a fair demand.
On the other hand, if you don't like what you're doing, do something else. - matthewniverse, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2THANK YOU for this comment. Finally someone who is seeing it my way! This whole strike boils down to writers working with greedy people (studios) and whining that they want to be ridiculously overpaid and greedy too? Why are so many people behind these guys? I say pay cuts for EVERYONE!
REAL problem = solved. - sevenalive, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1eztv FTW! It kicks ass as for the previous comment about piratebay, its overrated, i rather have demonoid and torrentspy back
- Akaji, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1No kidding. Claiming that our options are to be legal or ethical is stupid. There's always the option to NOT WATCH TV. That's both ethical and legal.
- GeneralFailure0, on 12/03/2007, -1/+2When discussing media, the cost of the product is not simply the cost of the disc itself or the box it comes in. It costs a lot of money to produce a TV show or movie, and this cost is recouped by ad revenue and the price you pay for the media in the store. That being said, I agree that the companies in question are not exactly hurting and that it's wrong of them to not be sharing more profits from alternative methods of distribution with the writers.
- inactive, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1I'd say that the only "ethical" thing would be to not watch anything. Although, by that argument, I suppose it's unethical if I watch a show on TV and don't buy the advertised products, right?
- bullcutter, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1??? 40k? Yeah, if you work for a cheesy, going-nowhere, no-audience kinda show. Fire 'em all, rehire completely new people, TV will be changed for the better. It truly cannot get any worse.
- bullcutter, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Well, the writers weren't getting extra money before file-sharing was invented, so I don't see why they should now.
- nnagflar, on 12/03/2007, -1/+2It's called inductive reasoning. Take a logic class.
- JeffD, on 12/03/2007, -2/+3When it does harm to something more immoral that that the act of stealing is itself. And copyright infringement isn't stealing anyways, its copying. There is a pretty big difference.
- dgendreau, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Hey! No piratebay.org? :)
- mwrl, on 12/03/2007, -2/+2Hollywood writers are way over paid and don't deserve anything. Now if the quality coming out of Hollywood was better maybe but the last ten years it has been down right bad.
People of Hollywood should only make minimum wage. Nothing more. That is all they are really worth. - phogasmic, on 12/03/2007, -2/+2that is the most ethical file sharing argument I have ever heard. I don't think I will be watching anymore shows online, until the writers get paid for them.

- pbasch, on 12/04/2007, -0/+0First, thanks for all the comments, >0 and
- lolo2007, on 03/03/2008, -0/+0I agree with mwrl -- TV writers are a bunch of over-rated, over-paid whiners. If the state of TV wasn't so depressing, I might feel comfortable giving them more credit.
Aren't there literally thousands of people who moved to Hollywood from everywhere else on the planet specifically to become a writer??? Why don't the studios hire some of them, who knows, maybe TV would get better! It certainly can't get any worse!

http://game.paramegsoft.com/ - pbasch, on 12/04/2007, -0/+0They weren't getting DVD payments before the invention of DVDs either.

The writers make about 40K a year if they are lucky, some however (few) make more than that, but they are usually series creators.
